Editor's Letter
King James Mangoba
At the beginning of this school year, we have seen a
tremendous change within our program. This change has affected how KVIKS TV runs, but we have adapted to the changes and this allows us to demonstrate our growth. One major change was our rebrand.
On October 21st, 2021, KVIKS TV was officially rebranded into KVIKS Media. We rebranded as our services have expanded beyond just the morning bulletin and making videos, we have expanded to broadcasting, creative media, interactive media and audio/video. The positive values of KVIKS TV remain and will not be changed. Growing from KVIKS TV to KVIKS Media is only fitting as we continue to define ourselves as a club and provide more unique services to our school and to the community.
Moving towards the end of the year, we are starting a new chapter for KVIKS Media. Introducing to you, KVIKS Spotlight, a digital magazine that will serve to share the previous and upcoming events and activities within KVIKS Media. We hope to use this magazine as a way to stay connected with KVIKS Media members, parents, and KVIKS alumni.
Each issue of KVIKS Spotlight will be published on the 15th of every school month and the issue will spotlight the previous month’s events. With this system, it allows us to showcase the amazing work our KVIKS Media members do, and see how you can help!
We are hopeful that with KVIKS Spotlight, we will be able to connect our past, our present and our future.
Together, we will continue to grow and expand. KING JAMES MANGOBA TOGETHE

he KVIKS spirit is alive and well after a full semester of inperson learning. After an abrupt end at the end of the 2020 School Year, and a full semester of inactivity before the grand return of KVIKS in February 2021, KVIKS has expanded and grown to over 50 members strong. Hi! My name is Luke Eclipse-Ujano, a graduate of Hilo High School from the Class of 2011. I am Hilo High School’s Technology Coordinator and Head Advisor of KVIKS Media. I was a part of the original KVIKS organization when I was in school. In 2017, the K-V-I-K-S Morning Bulletin was placed under my care. From there, we have expanded to include Live Broadcasting, Web Publishing, Social Media, App Publishing, Banner Printing, News Reporting and more! As you have read in the Letter from the Editor, from a student’s perspective, the growth of KVIKS TV to the point of rebranding to KVIKS Media is incredibly exciting. Parents and Guardians, thank you very much for allowing your child to be a part of our journey. KVIKS Media is not like any other club or program at this school. We are highly integrated at the highest level of communication and we provide a crucial service to our school. KVIKS Media without the students would just be the Hilo High School Communications Department, which consists of myself, the school SASA, other members of the Technology Department and the Principal. Clearly, we cannot communicate as effectively on our own, so we are eternally grateful for your child’s support. Please allow them to participate regularly after school and at special events. Please encourage them to communicate and work with us to set an agreeable schedule so that they can balance school work, extracurricular activities, and personal life with our program. Students, even though KVIKS Media has grown substantially, you are very valuable in our eyes. This publication would not have been possible without the ideas and support of creative minded individuals, many of whom were only in KVIKS for less than a calendar year. We truly believe we are a community, so make friends! KVIKS includes students from all walks of life, and our skillset collectively is widely expansive. Many students participate in activities because they have made lifelong friends with the people in our program. I believe that once you get a taste of the true KVIKS experience, you will enjoy it and wholeheartedly participate in our activities. Congratulations to the KVIKS Spotlight team on a successful first publication, here’s to many more!

November Recap
W
by Erin Wagner
ith such an empty year behind us, November of 2021 proved to be full of fun, new, and returning activities! With broadcasting making a grand return, new rallies and more, November has been especially interesting for KVIKS Media.
With the first in-person homecoming and football game, they marked the long awaited return of live broadcasting. The success of the homecoming broadcasts inspired many students to take further interest in broadcasting and led them to participate in the Football and Volleyball live streams that followed.
Camrenn Cabalar, a Junior stated: “I was ecstatic hearing about the return of sports broadcasts because great memories are always created in live streams.”
“I’m glad to have streams now as fun and enjoyable as they were my freshman year and I’m looking forward to future KVIKS things.” - Chris Babas, a returning KVIKS Member.
Needless to say, the joy and excitement surrounding broadcasting are unlikely to fade any time soon, and the interest in participating is sure to last.

November Recap
November was full of rallies and special events such as Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. A/V, Photography and Promotion was provided by KVIKS Media. Clara Steele, a Freshman photographer at some of these events said: “Being a photographer at rallies is really fun, it's really rewarding to find a good shot and be able to attend fun events like that up close... In general, KVIKS is just so amazing. I cannot put into words how much I love this club and the people in it. It's just people helping our school out and gaining knowledge you didn't even think you wanted to know while doing it. You can make so many great friends here and it's such a great learning opportunity for anyone even remotely interested in digital media.” Clara Steele as Bob Ross
The week leading up to Halloween was another fun event at KVIKS! “Spooky Week” allowed the Anchors on the KVIKS News Bulletin to dress up and show their spooky spirit! Kalani Keliipaakaua, a Sophomore and first year anchor on October 26, 2021 said:
“It was fun cosplaying as Lisa (Genshin Impact), and my classmates also loved it, as I was greeted by them saying swag bags.”

November Recap

Holiday themed events are always entertaining, and we hope to see more in the future, perhaps with even more members involved! As a club, KVIKS Media continues to grow, and we hope people will continue to get involved. With the influx of new members, the KVIKS Media rebrand has greatly aided in organizing everyone into various roles. However, seeing that with the change of name, previous KVIKS TV merch no longer conforms; brand new KVIKS Media merch is on the horizon. Hats, shirts, sweaters, and more are all underway. Soon enough, they can be worn to events like broadcasts and rallies, or simply to show your KVIKS spirit in the upcoming months. With all the excitement in the last month, we look forward to the journey that lies ahead. The interesting events we’ll partake in, the friendships we’ll form, and the memories we’ll make and share through KVIKS.

Bright Spot by Clara Steele
Sports Broadcasting was brought back in October 2021 at a very special remote game at Konawaena High School. During the shutdown, athletics were severely missed by not only athletes and spectators, but also by KVIKS members. Pressley Domingo, a current junior and newly elected President of KVIKS Media said that:
"To me, it was really disappointing when broadcasting was canceled because that was what got me [invested] into the club. It was fun doing broadcasts, especially getting to do it with friends.”
Jasmine, a.k.a. Jazz, Gardner, a senior and KVIKS Broadcasting Chairperson, also said:
“When broadcasting got canceled, I was pretty sad because broadcasting is a big passion of mine, and I think anyone can agree that when you're told you won’t be able to do something for a long time that you really love to do, it really discourages you."
"I missed the feelings that I would get at live streams, it's almost like a runner's high of complete euphoria. I missed the seriousness of it all but still being able to get a lot of laughs and great memories in. I especially missed the broadcasting community that had been built as well, the people are what really made each live stream special."
"Broadcasts were always the highlights of my day.”

But now, broadcasting is back in business! Both Jazz and Pressley said that the transition back into doing live streams wasn’t too bad, it was almost like they never stopped at all; everyone got right back into the swing of things.
Towards the beginning, there were a lot of mistakes, and a lot of frustration at the lack of skilled operators, but after the first few games, KVIKS Broadcasting got more organized, and encouraged many new members to join and be trained.
Many new members have said that Broadcasting was an exciting new experience for them to learn.
Reana Lagronio, a Sophomore and new member of KVIKS Media said that:
“After I had my first broadcast, my love for broadcasting really grew… I saw broadcasting as a new learning opportunity and found it really interesting… I personally enjoy broadcasting because of just how fun it is in general. Yeah, you’re under a ton of pressure, and yeah you most likely will be confused with everything at first, but it really is fun. From setting up, to going live, to even breaking down and crying.”
12
Erin Wagner, another sophomore who joined last year during the virtual school-year also began broadcasting this year said:
“I enjoy broadcasting mostly for the excuse of hanging out with everyone, getting to know people and such.” She says, “It’s also an interesting, if not a touch stressful, job. I’m usually the operator of the Alpha Wide Camera, and I love that role. There’s something about getting a great shot that feels rewarding. All the feedback we get from parents and teachers as well, that they like what we do… it’s a rewarding thing to be a part of.”

Even though many members love broadcasting now, that wasn’t always the case. Pressley, for example, said that when he first joined, he didn’t want to do live streams and would only go if no one else could. Then he tried being a camera operator at a broadcast, and the rest is history. Reana and Erin agree, saying initially they didn’t want to broadcast as they were pretty nervous, and now, they go to almost every live stream we produce. It’s safe to say that if you’re a member who is unsure about attending a live stream, you were not alone! The best thing you can do is just try it out; you won’t regret it!
NATHAN RAGASA "If you’re thinking about wanting BROADCASTING ASSISTANT CHAIR to help in broadcasting, but you’re unsure, then I’d say to just go for it cause it’s really just a learning process. It usually just pulls from the training that should have been done in the beginning of the year, and if you want to help, then either confirm an open shift on WhenIWork, or ask me or Jazz and we can get you to help in one way or another, I know that for me personally broadcasting is really enjoyable because it allows or me to be more active and it’s simply just fun to participate in.”

Jazz says that “Broadcasting [may not be] for everyone, but you never know unless you try. So I'd say get out there, and sign up for a broadcast! It may seem like a lot of work and almost boring but take it from me, you will make so many memories and have so many laughs. Plus, it's always great to just learn from going to live streams, like how to use the camera or set up the scoreboard or even just what cables go where, which in the end will be a benefit to you.”
First Girls Volleyball Livestream After such a long break from doing live streams, KVIKS Media is back and better than ever; with both new and old members passionate about producing great content, learning, and having a great time along the way.
So, if you’re wondering about taking part in a broadcast, what are you waiting for?
Let Jazz and Nathan know you are interested, and take an open shift on WhenIWork if there are any available! It will be so worth it in the end!

BROADCASTING For Girls and Boys Basketball Broadcasting, they will be offering students who have not yet done a broadcast first choice in positions of Broadcast Tech, Camera Operator, or Technical Director.
