Editor's Letter Dylan Yanazaki

Happy New Year everyone! The new year presents us with the ability to start fresh and continue to grow even more throughout the year. Our first KVIKS Spotlight issue was released last month, and the positive feedback received was outstanding! Amazing job to our editors, creative designers, and journalists who dedicate so much time to producing these issues. Moving forward, one of KVIKS’ big focuses during the winter season is broadcasting. Both basketball and winter sports are in full swing, allowing our members to gain full access running a broadcast stream! Unfortunately with covid spreading rapidly, it's important for us all to remain safe while broadcasting so we can continue to bring our Hilo High school games to you. Please continue to wear a mask and social distance when necessary. Being a part of one of the largest clubs on campus brings a lot of responsibility, and I'm excited to see how we can continue to grow over the course of the new year. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy, and I look forward to presenting our next issue of KVIKS Spotlight! Thank you

advisor's letter Darian Takase

Happy 2022! I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable holiday break! My name is Darian Takase and I am a proud graduate of Hilo High School’s class of 2015. In addition to being a teacher, I am also an advisor of KVIKS Media. Parents and guardians, thank you again for allowing your child to be a part of KVIKS Media. It has been an absolute pleasure working with them for the past semester and seeing their growth within the club. Your continued support and understanding is greatly appreciated as we work with your children to provide crucial communication services school-wide. Students, congratulations on completing your first semester back to in-person learning as well as all your accomplishments within KVIKS Media! Now that we are all starting to get back into our normal grooves, I encourage you to continue being involved and embrace what KVIKS is able to offer YOU. There is a niche for everyone in this club and I hope you take the opportunity to learn and grow from the people around you. I look forward to another successful semester with you all!

December Recap by Erin Wagner

Broadcasting is back in full swing and we here at

KVIKS are as delightfully busy as ever with a variety of winter events! From themed bulletins to our first-ever dual-venue broadcast, KVIKS has had quite an eventful December.

From the Hilo High Auditorium, our very own Viking band played a number of seasonal songs, prefaced by both the Hilo Intermediate beginning and concert band. However, unlike previous years in which all bands played from the halls of Hilo High, the intermediate school bands played from their auditorium. This compelled KVIKS to find a way to broadcast from multiple locations. Luke Eclipse-Ujano, head advisor for KVIKS Media, gave this explanation of how we pulled it off:

To start the month off, KVIKS streamed the first Performing Arts Learning Center (PALC) play in a year; Agatha Rex! For several students, like Reana Lagronio, a sophomore in her first year of KVIKS, this was their first-ever PALC live stream. The PALC stream was a first for many, and getting used to broadcasting from an environment like the auditorium would prove useful in the following broadcast for band: KVIKS’ first-ever dual-venue broadcast!

“The PALC live stream was very fun. Not only because we were able to hop on stage and do the Macarena with the PALC people, but also because it was the very first time I did camera op for something that isn’t a sport.” -Reana Lagronio

“Both venues had two cameras and a live switcher box. At Hilo Intermediate, to send the signal to Hilo High, we used an SDI to USB converter box (Blackmagic Web Presenter) and sent our signal through our school's professional Zoom account.” This allowed the activity at both venues to be broadcasted live through a single stream. The event proved to be an interesting experience for all members involved.

“Running a broadcast can be challenging on its own, but managing to successfully put together two events at separate locations into one stream was a new experience of

mine. Being the technical director for the Hilo Intermediate side of the broadcast initially made me nervous, but I was also excited to see my old middle school again. While I had many questions and

uncertainties during the stream, the crew on

the Hilo Intermediate side truly brought the

stream together through careful communication and planning. Let’s also not forget how a true Kalanianaole had taken place; as most of the students helping at Hilo Intermediate School hailed originally from Kalanianaole Intermediate School. Chris, Reana, Kalani, and even Reynard, got the chance to take over Hilo Inter and show their presence at the school. With the special help of our advisors, Luke and Reynard, setting up and directing the shots for us, the Hilo Intermediate side of the program was a true accomplishment for KVIKS Media!”

December Recap

Needless to say, the ability to broadcast from multiple locations will undoubtedly be invaluable to KVIKS in the future. Along with broadcasts of the performing arts, streams of winter sports started up again as well! Several basketball games were streamed from the Hilo High school gym, and for some students, these were their first basketball games streamed with KVIKS. Clara Steele, a freshman in KVIKS, found the streams to be especially exciting! In regards to the games, she stated:

"The basketball live streams were a really great time! I think they are where I really started to grasp what broadcasts are all about. Please go to broadcasts, you really won’t regret it, they’re always a great learning experience and super fun!"

December was full of countless KVIKS activities, with various broadcasts and a number of events encompassing our holiday spirit. We can’t wait to see where the new year takes us here at KVIKS Media!

Holiday festivities

This

year’s holiday season has been filled with a number of wonderfully joyous events including several seasonal bulletins, a Secret Santa, and a festive party held on the last day of school. Restrictions from COVID have made our usual festivities difficult, but with such grand merriment around, nothing could silence our holiday spirit!

by Erin Wagner

With the holidays growing closer, KVIKS celebrated the season with a variety of themed bulletins. In the days leading up to winter break, some of our anchors dressed up in spectacularly seasonal attire and spoke to the school from a fantastic winter wonderland created by our editors.

The seasonal dress-up days have been greatly enjoyed by our morning bulletin crew and we hope to see more morning bulletin events in the future!

Christmas Themed Morning Bulletins

“Editing one of the seasonal morning bulletins was very fun as I got to use different backgrounds for the anchors. It wasn’t any different from a regular bulletin, other than adding in the background since a green screen was used, but the font used for the thumbnail and designs for the wiki and lunch slides were interesting to look at. I hope that the bulletins won’t just stop at seasonal events, as there could also be backgrounds to match Spirit Weekdays or certain sports happening during the month.”

-Nathan Ragasa, an editor for the morning news bulletin

KVIKS also celebrated the holiday season with the common tradition, Secret Santa! A large number of students participated, with many receiving gifts from people they didn’t know well. This allowed many people to forge new friendships with their fellow members. Kalani Keliipaakaua, a member participating in the Secret Santa, said:

“During the Secret Santa party, I failed my keto diet for the 100th time; but it was worth it because I got to eat something that was given to me by our one and only Mayor of Space Texas! I’m looking forward to more stuff like this.” The exchange of presents took place at the KVIKS holiday party which also featured many activities like KVIKS Trivia and a gingerbread house-making competition! All these festive events were planned primarily by Jazz Gardner.

09

“I’m happy that people had a good time. I put it together not only for the tradition but also because I wanted to see the kids all hang out and have a good time just like we use to preCOVID. KVIKS social events are made to bring people together with some food, games, and friendly competition; that part was definitely a success. The planning process was the pure definition of "fake it till you make it" (one of the KVIKS values), but in the end, everyone had fun and shared good laughs.” -Jazz Gardner

Holiday festivities

Without a doubt, the holiday party was a massive success, enjoyed by all members who attended. So many fun memories were made, and everyone is already looking forward to next year’s events. Mitchell Tulang, another member who attended the party, said:

“I got a lot of cookies for secret Santa. Not expected, but a welcome surprise! I didn't do the gingerbread house decorating, but there was a lot of creativity put into the houses!”

Pressley Domingo, the current president of KVIKS Media, found the event quite interesting. He said:

"It was really neat. It was cool to finally have some sort of social, even if it was limited by time and more orderly than usual. However, it soon got back to the chaotic fun it usually is when the gingerbread house contest kicked off. It’s pretty neat seeing the bulk of the club sitting around and enjoying themselves.” With so many new members and countless students continuing to join, we hope to see more people participating in various KVIKS events like broadcasts, the morning bulletin, and fun seasonal activities! The holiday season here at KVIKS has truly been wonderful, and we look forward to seeing what the new year brings.

Bright spot: Hiki Nō by Clara Steele

iki Nō is a program offered through PBS Hawai’i, H which allows middle and high school students to produce videos. It started in 2011 and is the first statewide student news network. KVIKS Media students often make videos for Hiki Nō and participate in the challenges they offer. Not only do the students have a great time, they also learn so much along the way!

KVIKS crew at the Triple Crown Challenge

Hiki Nō’s purppose is to train students to be storytellers. Camrenn Cabalar, a junior who has produced his own video for Hiki Nō which aired on PBS Hawai’i, says that:

Richard Gonsalves, a sophomore who participated in the Hiki No Triple Crown challenge this year and received an honorable mention, shared:

"It was my first time doing Hiki Nō, or any video production challenge, really, but I can say it was a lot of fun to participate. Although my team didn't quite place the way we wanted to, we still had a lot of fun and learned a lot about video production, storyboarding, and editing. Overall my experience was fantastic and I would definitely do it again!" So, next time Hiki Nō offers a challenge or you have a video project you think PBS Hawai’i and Hiki Nō would be interested in, try it! You’ll learn so much along the way about everything from preproduction, production, and post-production. Participating in Hiki Nō offers you numerous opportunities and skills, not only if you’re interested in pursuing digital media as a career, but for life in general!

"From doing Hiki Nō, I learned a ton about the 3 stages of video production. Being able to learn how to layout a story, find the ideal shots, and compile them together with good color correction, audio levels, and sequencing, gave me a ton of knowledge of how professionals make documentaries or tell stories."

How to get involved By Nathan Ragasa

Near the end of second semester, computers were set up in C-215, otherwise known as Space Texas. All these computers are for general use, with the exception of one being specifically designated for editing. This allows for skits to be made and edited in Space Texas while students are waiting to be picked up. Of course, broadcasts are events where KVIKS Media members are especially needed, and anyone who would like to participate can contact Jasmine Gardner or Nathan Ragasa via Discord, the WhenIWork app, or Instagram. Shifts and positions will be assigned depending on the student’s capabilities, as well as their personal interests. Positions available to students who’d like to help and are readily available include Camera Operator, Broadcast Tech, Technical Director, or depending on if the broadcast, Scoreboard. Should students feel as though they are not ready, they can shadow those who have been to previous broadcasts.

Should students be unable to attend after school activities, they can participate in KVIKS Media activities during school hours by getting involved with Audio/Video. This year, lunchtime rallies are new and frequent events where students can take up the position of Audio/Video Technician, Photographer, and occasionally, Camera Operator. Finally, the daily production of the Morning Bulletin will soon have new and fresh faces, as shift changes happen this month.

First Basketball Game of the Season

14

McChicken Fund donations are, of course, always welcomed and appreciated to feed students during school hours and broadcasts. The McChicken Fund heavily relies on the voluntary donations from students, as well as parents. Students who help after school are expected to work, but tend to leave the safety and supervision of the campus to pick up food.
