NARRATION / In spring and summer of 1960 there were attempts to strike an alliance that could help the struggling minority government keen for Finland to join the European Free Trade Association. Negotiations led by president Urho Kekkonen had broken down. Kekkonen, on his first term, was in a bad mood, as he had had to return from his summer house earlier than planned. As we know, this was a period when both domestic and foreign politics were a delicate balancing act between socialist and non-socialist agendas, the East and the West. 22
