The international federation of medical students association (IFMSA), is a non-profit, non-govermental, non-partisan organizatoin representing associations of medical students internationally.

IFMSA is recognized as non govermental organizatiomns within the united nations’ system, and the world health organization and as well, it is a student chapter of the world medical association.

IFMSA was founded in 1951 and currently maintains 136 national member organizations in 137 countries across 6 continents with over 1.3 million students represented world wide.

For more than 60 years, IFMSA has existed to bring together the global medical students community at the local, national and internationsl level on social and health issues.

IFMSA KURDISTAN IFMSA-Kurdistan is a member of the IFMSA family which created to impact the world and to empower its members in taking their vision and ideas, and making them a reality. IFMSA Kurdistan has inspired our medical students to develop the leadership abilities and skills to take on challenges and to improve the situation around them in a crucial period of their career. Engaging in IFMSA Kurdistan encourages both professional and personal collaborations irrespective of geographical, social, cultural, religious, racial, sexual and political differences. As a result, future doctors are becoming more culturally aware and sensitive physicians.

It was established at 2009 at Erbil (The capital city of Kurdistan –Iraq) and it’s composed of 4 local committees (Slemani, Hawler, Duhok) and it has more than 500 members. And it is like other national member organizations worldwide, non-governmental and non-political organization and its run by medical students and only medical students can be a member of this organization.

Here IFMSA Kurdistan is working on many different subjects, departments and different kind of people so that we can develop our country and aware people as much as we can for taking care of the medical issues that they will face it during their life, because we as a medical students have the will, empathy and the passion 4

to help people and to not let them suffer in their lives , and also we as IFMSA-Kurdistan have the will to help our medical students by having trainings , presentations about medical subjects and also by providing them opportunities to visit hospitals in other countries by an Exchange programs and all of that is to empower and inspire them to be a good doctors in the future and to show them the right way to the success.

TEAM OF OFFICIALS The Team of Officials is the body responsible for the work of IFMSA-Kurdistan between the National Assembly Meetings, they are elected in National Assembly for one year period and work within the mandate, guidelines and decisions provided by the National Assembly.

EXECUTIVE BOARD IFMSA-Kurdistan is managed by the Official Executive board elected by the National Assembly for a one year period. The Executive Board is entitled to officially represent the organization.

Each Standing Committee consists of the national officer, the local officers and the medical students (members) working in the fields of interest related to the standing committee. For more infomation on Standinc Comittees, refer to the Standing Comittees section on page 14.

The Standing Committees National Officers who are elected by National Assembly Represent IFMSA-Kurdistan in the corresponding committee’s field of work on national, regional & international levels and also Responsible for monitoring the corresponding standing committees work on the IFMSA-Kurdistan level.

LOCAL COMMITTEES Each local committee represents a single medical school within Iraqi Kurdistan Region and each Local Committtee is managed by Local Board (LB). Each LB is composed of the following: Local President, Local Secretary, Local Standing Committee and Support Directors. IFMSA-Kurdistan has 4 Local Committees: HAWLER LOCAL COMMITTEE Hawler Local Committee represent Medical members from Hawler College of Medicine \HMU is the first full member Local Committee that joined IFMSA Kurdistan family, and are consists now of about 100 active members. Hawler Local Committee have hosted the first ,third and fifth National Assembly in 2013 ,2012 and 2015 consecutively.

SLEMANY LOCAL COMMITTEE The Local Committee of Slemany became a part of IFMSA - Kurdistan in 2010 it was the Second Full member local committee that have joined IFMSA-Kurdistan family.

Now the local committee have over 150 active members was elected in the 5th National Assembly -2015Hawler as the most active local committee of IFMSA-Kurdistan for the year 2015. Slemany Local Committee have hosted the fourth National Assembly in 2014.

DUHOK LOCAL COMMITTEE Duhok Local Commitee is the 3rd full member Local Committee that joined IFMSA Kurdistan family, and are consists now of about 90 active members. and could gain the trust of the medical faculty, local health system and Duhok›s society by the various volunteer work and projects its members do. Duhok LC has hosted two NAs, one in 2013 and one in 2016.

KOYA LOCAL COMMITTEE(CANDIDATE) Koya University, college of medicine, joined IFMSA in sulaymani NA 2017, they are currently a candidate LC with 100 active members and they’re expected to obtain full

VISION

The Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH) brings together medical students to learn, build skills, cooperate, explore and share ideas when it comes to addressing all issues related to public health, including global health issues, health policies, health promotion and education, activities. SCOPH engages medical students in public health based activities to address and raise awareness about the health issues by providing the public with the information and resources necessary to help them achieve healthy lives.

MISSION

The Standing Committee on Public Health aims to become a reference as training and learning pillars for medical students, in order to create future public health qualified leaders who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to work on a local and an international level.

The Standing Committee on Public Health promotes the development of medical students worldwide regarding public health issues through an international sharing knowledge network, projects management, community based learning, capacity building, advocacy and access to external learning opportunities.

ABOUT

VISION

Standing Committee on Sexual and Reproductive Health including HIV/ AIDS is gathering passionate individuals who are committed to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights and are passionate about creating positive change in their local communities in a culturally respected fashion. SCORA tries to provide its members the tools necessary to advocate and raise awareness regarding the reproductive health and HIV/AIDS through building the skills and knowledge about the subject.

A world where every individual is empowered to exercise their sexual and reproductive health rights equally, free from stigma and discrimination.

MISSION

To provide our members with the tools necessary to advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights within their respective communities in a culturally respected fashion. This has been accomplished through building the skills and the knowledge about, providing trainings on Comprehensive Sexuality Education other respective reproductive health issues, exchanging ideas and projects, as well as drafting policies and working with our external partners in order to create change on levels.

VISION

The Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace unites students who strive to create an equal and peaceful world, and believe in international, intercultural as well as interpersonal solidarity. We believe in everybodys responsibility as well as ability to contribute to creating this world, as human rights can only exist when it applies to all humans.

SCORP has a vision of world where the all individuals are entitled full and equal access to their human rights, where no one is left alone in a disaster and where the entire society, including medical students and health workers, unite to help the most vulnerable people.

MISSION

The mission of SCORP is to empower and motivate medical students to actively promote and protect human rights and peace, and to introduce the members to different forms of humanitarian action through capacity building, field project opportunities and cooperation with external organizations.

Medical Education should be a concern of every medical student as it shapes not only the quality of future doctors, but also the quality of healthcare. The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) has a dedicated organ which aims to implement an optimal learning environment for all medical students around the world the Standing Committee On Medical Education (SCOME).

Through all our joint efforts we work to create sustainable changes around the world, for ourselves as medical students, for the generations to come and for our future patients and our communities who are in fact the final beneficiaries of our education.

ABOUT

MISSION

The Professional Exchange program is a full educational program offering clerkships to medical students abroad.

Since the very beginning, in 1951, it was evident that exchange of medical students would be one of the main fields of action in IFMSA. As early as 1952, a total of 463 students spent a period of practice abroad, and today, it continues to be the backbone of the Federation and constitutes its longest running project. Annually, more than 13.000 students from 90 countries travel around the world to discover new health systems, new cultures and to enhance their global health and intercultural understanding.

The aim of SCOPE is to promote cultural understanding and co-operation amongst medical students and all health professionals, through the facilitation of international student exchanges. SCOPE aims to give all students the opportunity to learn about global health, and attains this partly by having its exchanges accredited by medical faculties across the world.

OBJECTIVES • To increase the mobility and to widen the horizon of medical students worldwide; • To provide medical students with the possibility to experience healthcare in another culture with different health and education systems, and to learn how differences in culture and believes are of influence; • To create possibilities for medical students to learn about global health issues, primary health concerns and basic epidemiology of the host country, and how it differs from their home country; • To contribute to the education of a future health professionals with a global vision and to contribute to medical students personal development, self-reliance and openness in becoming future health professionals; • To provide students with the chance to improve their medical knowledge, their vision on medical issues and their practical knowledge depending on the regulations of the host country; • To facilitate the connection of medical students and other health professionals and to provide a platform for future cooperation amongst medical students with each other and with health professionals across the globe.

All medical students are entitled to participate in a fourweek clerkship in a chosen clinical or pre-clinical field of medicine. The language of instruction is either English or the language of the host country. In order to complete the clerkship, the exchange student must show adequate knowledge of the English language or the native language of the host country. Clerkships are purely educational and students will not receive a salary. During the exchange, the student has the chance to observe a different health care system and learn from foreign tutors. All students are assigned to a physician supervisor, who acts as a tutor and mentor.

Exchange Contracts are signed between two participating National Member Organizations and are of two types: Bilateral Contracts: where the participating countries exchange two students (one from each country) between themselves.

Unilateral Contracts: where a single student participates in the exchange.

In exchange of a participation fee, the incoming student is offered a one-month clerkship at the hospital and department of his or her choice, lodging at a student facility or with a host family, and at least one meal per day.

Research is essential for the development of medicine and without it the medical fields could never have reached the stage they are right now with innovative methods of diagnosis and treatments. Our mission is to offer future physicians an opportunity to experience research and diversity in countries all over the world. This is achieved by providing a network of locally and internationally active students that globally facilitate access to research exchange projects. Through our programming and opportunities, we aim to develop both culturally sensitive students and skilled researchers intent on shaping the world of science in the upcoming future.

THE DEFINITION OF IFMSA RESEARCH EXCHANGE

The IFMSA Research Exchange is a research project that provides medical students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in the specific area of their research interest. This program is officially recognized and supported by the medical school/university and is guided by a mentor who introduces exchange students to the basic principles of research, including literature search, data collection, scientific writing, laboratory work, statistics and ethics. Upon completion of the program, students may be required to prepare a written scientific report or an oral presentation.

To provide research projects in medical curricula in order to medical students worldwide to take responsibility for their own curriculum according to their interest and to introduce them to the basic principles of medical research.

To increase the mobility and widen the horizon of medical students worldwide providing them with the possibility to experience different approaches in medical research, education and treatment by partaking in research projects in other countries.

To enhance the academic quality of the medical student curricula and the theoretical knowledge in the field of medical research either on basic science or on clinical science with/ without lab work.

To facilitate collaboration and partnership between different medical universities/schools, research institutions and allied medical students across the globe in order to share and spread new achievements in the field of medical research.

To maintain affordable research exchange tuition through its governing body to insure that medical students within the National Member Organizations can participate in the exchanges without any financial burden.

HOW THE SCORE EXCHANGES WORK All exchanges are initiated and coordinated entirely by medical student volunteers. Every university is represented by a Local Officer on Research Exchange (LORE), who facilitates projects at the local level and arranges for the exchange students preparations such like housing and boarding. Every exchange student is assigned a local contact person who serves as a guide, resource, and social liaison, the thing that strengthens the intercultural communication, understanding, and unity among medical students worldwide.

ANNUAL MEETINGS GENERAL ASSEMBLIES IFMSA General Assemblies are among the biggest youthled events around the world. Held twice a year – once in March, once in August, they are attended by over 800 medical students from more than 100 countries. The country hosts are elected one year prior to the meeting by the National Member Organizations (NMOs) of the Federation, giving the organization committee plenty of time to put together the optimal settings for medical students to learn, discuss, meet and exchange. The IFMSAs General Assemblies hope to inspire the next generation of future physicians to become leaders and advocates through exchange of ideas, networking and learning from the various programming sessions. They feature namely: meetings of each Standing Committee; governance and decisionmaking sessions; training opportunities for self-skills development; inspiring activities and projects presentations. The executive board is elected at the March Meeting, while the rest of the Team of Officials and the members of the Supervising Council, are elected at August Meeting.

ANNUAL MEETINGS & ALUMNI NATIONAL ASSEMBLIES The National Assembly (NA) is an Annual conference that gathers medical student and IFMSA-Kurdistan members from all over Kurdistan Region. In which Medical and nonMedical Students and outside participants from Hewler, Duhok, Slemany and Kirkuk participate in. These conferences allow participants to know each other and together learn new skills through trainings, seminars, theme events and different Standing Committee sessions. National Assembly is the highest decision making body of IFMSA-Kurdistan.

The firstNational Assembly of our organization was in April 2012 in Hawler, which medical students participated from all three local committees followed by five subsequent national assemblies.

ALUMNI The IFMSA-Kurdistan Alumni Division consists of former active IFMSA-Kurdistan members who have graduated from the university up to 3 years, work as physicians and health care providers, working on serving the community and still feel affiliated with the organization.

They have all the rights like any other undergraduate member in the organization,in participating in SC activities, NA, Regional meetings and GA’s, as well as gaining the same scores of other non-alumni members.
