our story

OUR STORY Kuna Khula originated from an extensive family trip to marvellous India, during which we were exposed to a culture unlike anything we had seen before.

A

n unplanned turn on our Indian adventure took our family —which includes Sharon, Lior and our three children— to a village in the Kashmir Valley filled with vibrant rugs embroidered in a technique we had not seen before; chain stitch. It was love at first sight − the technique was unlike anything we had seen before! These colorful rugs have been a rich source of delight inside Indian homes for many generations, including the luxury homes of the affluent and the grand palaces of Indian royalty. We were inspired to share the spirit of the local Kashmir rug artisans by creating our own range of stunning rug designs with dynamic colour and design combinations that mix the modern and traditional. The Kuna Khula family takes great prides in offering individuals bespoke pieces that are eternal and unique. We hope that our rugs may become a part of the fabric of other families. Kuna Khula’s one-of-a-kind, hand-knotted wool rugs have the potential to spark optimism and delight in the home and truly ‘wow’ guests with their unique and colourful designs. Our rugs are of the highest quality and are fully handmade following ethical standards from start to finish. Our carefully selected Kashimir artisans hand-dye the finest ethicallysourced Australian sheep wool and chain stitch their bespoke designs by hand. Why Kuna Khula?

Kuna Khula is a catchy, vibrant name that, no matter where you are from, slides right off the tongue! It takes its origins from Hindi, the official language of India, and is a translation of ‘well’ and ‘open’. ‘Well’ represents nourishment and truth - the water welll is a pure source of inexhaustible replenishment. ‘Open’ represents the sensation of opening one’s heart and being honest and open to positive change and affirmations. We believe our rugs have the potential to truly open the heart and nourish the home.

100% HAN DMADE Each of Kuna Khula’s bespoke rugs are made in the homes and village of the Kashimir artisans, engaging the expertise of a different artisan at each stage of the process to create a one-of-a-kind rug.

1. Making the Design The first Kashimir artisan sketches their unique design onto paper, then traces the line work onto a sheet of transparent paper the same size as the rug by using an electrical tool that pricks a series of fine holes or perforations.

Perforating the transparent sheet

Lior & Sharon

2. Transferring the Design The design on the perforated transparent sheet is transferred to a sheet of canvas backing by rubbing a cloth soaked with an ink and coal solution. The ink seeps through the perforated holes and is absorbed in the canvas, creating the ‘print’.

3. Colouring the Wool The next Kashimir artisan divides premium Australian wool threads into clusters and dips each into a concrete vessel filled with boiling water. Natural colour extracts are then added to expertly achieve the exact shades dictated by Lior and Sharon. The wool clusters are then removed and hung outside to dry naturally in the sun.

4. Embroidering the Design A group of Kashimir artisans receive the printed canvas and dyed woolen threads and embroider the design using the printed canvas as a guide. A large hooked needle (known as an Aari) is used to create the rug using a series of circular loops to form the chain stitch style.

5. Lining & Drying Once the chain stitched embroidery is complete, the next Kashimir artisan sews a heavy cotton lining onto the back of the rug for protection. The rug is then rinsed and hung to dry in the open air. Fringing is added if desired.

FAIR TRADE

K

una Khula is a relatively small business with a strong ethical policy at its core. The company aims to buy from small-scale producers who use largely natural materials and traditional techniques to produce beautiful and unique articles. All of our products are 100% handmade and fairly traded. All Kuna Khula suppliers ensure that their workers are paid a fair price per piece, which is at or above the national average or in accordance with national laws, and we strive to make sure that men and women are paid the same rate. We try to order regularly from each producer to maintain continuity of demand. We also aim to ensure that no children under the age of 16 are involved in factory-based production for the company. Most of our items are produced in the homes of the workers, providing useful additional income whilst allowing them to look after their homes and families. Kuna Khula also prides itself on providing advance payments for orders. This ensures that producers do not have to take on debts in order to complete our orders. Kuna Khula seeks to minimise its impact on the environment in a number of ways. The company uses azo free dyes, which create a safer working environment for the artisans and have less impact on the natural environment. Kuna Khula also encourages suppliers to use recycled packaging for shipping such as recycled jute packaging.

MAINTENANCE & CLEANING

T

he light weight quality of Kuna Khula’s chain stitched rugs allows for easy cleaning. We recommend giving the rugs a rigorous shake once a week, or a vacuum provided there is an under-rug anti slip rug pad that will hold the rug firmly to the floor during vacuuming. In the event that a Kuna Khula rug gets soiled, fast action will ensure effective stain removal. Cleaning wipes will remove the majority of stains if actioned in a quick time frame. For more serious stains, we recommend wetting a cloth with a specialised textile shampoo and water solution and cleaning the affected area using a gentle circular cleaning motion before being left to dry. Outside of routine shaking and vacuuming, we recommend that all Kuna Khula rugs are cleaned via a special rug cleaning company once a year or so.

ANTI SLIP RUG PAD

K

una Khula offers a Premium Rug Pad at a very low price to keep rugs in place and free from slipping, bunching or moving on smooth surfaces within the home. At 500GSM thickness, our rug pads provide underfoot padding and noise absorption and are made with 100% toxic-free PVC. Kuna Khula’s Premium Rug Pads are also designed to provide resistance to the pressure of heavy objects and furniture and are safe for all floor types, excluding polished concrete. All rug pads are cut to order and there is no need for any special instructions. Simply place the pad on the floor, and lay your Kuna Khula rug on top.
