CSR, Corporate Social Responsibility, is a term which represents the responsibility put on companies and organisations in addition to the rules and regulations they are already obliged to follow by law. CSR means that companies voluntarily includes environmental and social concerns in their business. Knowledge of CSR is highly attractive among multinational companies which have established themselves in developing countries.

ÂŤThrough a CSR mindset we have the possibility to create a business model where the focus is put on long term production value instead of pushing towards short term solutions to please the market. When the political will is low, companies still have the power to be important agents of change in the societyÂť

We offer two different levels of CSR: CSR 1: Introduction to CSR & Sustainability CSR 2: Sustainability Strategies for SMEs

ARGENTINA

ÂŤIn Spring 2009 I studied Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Buenos Aires and it was an amazing experience- both social and educational! Later, I took a Masters degree with CSR-related courses and my previous knowledge of CSR from Argentina gave me a major advantage. The study and stay with Kulturstudier in Buenos Aires together with the courses I took at home made me very interested in the social and environmental responsibilities companies have. Today I work with CSR in the law department in Vinmonopolet. Currently, I am participating in a project where the goal is to create an ethical and environmentally sustainable wine company. The course with Kulturstudier is much of the reason for why I got this job in Vinmonopolet, combined with my Masters degree from BI, Norway.Âť Sara G. Hauge

MULTICULTURAL PEDAGOGICS

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY AND LEARNING (Not Autumn 2018)

Multicultural Pedagogy provides the students with the necessary skills and experience to work and teach in a multicultural context. With both Scandinavian and Nicaraguan students in the classroom this provides us with a great starting point to develop new and functional strategies to teach in a multicultural society. During the stay in Nicaragua the students will also work as trainees in schools, kindergartens or on other social projects.

Through the course of positive psychology and learning, the students will get an understanding of how the field of psychology can be used as guidance towards a better life and how to reach it. The subject focuses on transmitting new research in positive psychology and combines this with practical exercises, which can then be used in your own life and in your occupation as a teacher, pedagogue or leader. The subject is especially suitable as part of a bachelors degree in psychology, leadership, or as part of pre-school teacher or teachers degree and as further education. The students do an internship in León.

BACHELORS DEGREE With two semesters in Nicaragua (or Argentina) you will be able to master Spanish well and be able to include your subjects in further bachelor studies at UNANLeón or another Spanish speaking university.

«When I studied in Nicaragua I volunteered in different projects in León. I was especially involved in a children’s centre called “Proyecto Barrilete”, where vulnerable children from different backgrounds get help with tutoring, homework and a safe place to be while their parents are away. It was a lot of fun. The children were great, and it also helped me develop my Spanish.»

The course gives you explanations of causes, critical analyses and reflections on conflict lines in today’s world. This is combined with an introduction to the cultures and societies of Nepal and South Asia, and thereby it brings our own experiences of Nepal closer to the theoretical knowledge transmitted.

«I want the students to leave with a consciousness that order and structure not always means peace, and that diversity not automatically leads to conflict. I hope the experience of living in India will make them more susceptible to different ideas, life styles and cultures.» Dr Sudha Ramachandran

The students get insight in cultural studies and important concepts such as nationalism, ethnicity, identity, family, gender and religion.

Vietnam, Hoian Vietnam is a country in rapid change and is considered being one of the world’s greatest development successes over the last 10 years. Vietnam is still a poor country, but it is rich with great experiences, incredible stories and kind people. Kulturstudier is located in the city Hoi An, which with its narrow streets and beautiful location by the Thu Bon river is, in our eyes, the pearl of Vietnam. In Hoi An you can bike to most places, learn to cook Vietnamese food, go to the beach or visit one of the many bars and cafes. You can also visit the bigger cities Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Accommodation In Hoi An we stay in private houses which we rent outside the old city. As a starting point everybody stay in two to four person rooms. There is a possibility to stay in a single room.

A YEAR OF STUDIES AND BACHELOR’S DEGREE With Development Studies 1 in Vietnam you can study for a full year by continuing with Development Studies 2 in Ghana. After that you can apply directly to the second year of bachelor studies at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University.

Study centre The teaching takes place at the local university Phan Chau Trinh which is located in central Hoi An.

K ULTURSTUDIER

«Field trips were part of the course, which meant that we, through practice, got closer to theory, and took advantage of the fact that we were in a developing country. In Vietnam we visited a factory and an eco-village, where we saw the consequences of tourism in local communities, and the gains from it. In Ghana we had field studies where we did interviews, conducted our own research and learnt a lot. Already the second weekend we went on a 10-hour bus drive to the north of the country, where the river had been dammed to become a source of power for a big part of the population of Ghana, which lead to floods in various communities. We saw another conflict of interests in Kakum National Park where the locals’ hunting grounds had been transformed into a national park for tourists and to protect the environment.» Ida Langvik Flåten, former student of Environmental and Development Studies

ARGENTINA

Around the world With Kulturstudier you can study around the world. How about a year of Development Studies in Vietnam and Ghana or Spanish in Argentina and Nicaragua? Or maybe a bachelor around the world, in three different continents, is something for you?

34

ARGENTINA

A YEAR OF STUDIES AND BACHELOR IN DEVELOPMENT STUDIES First, you study Development Studies 1 in Vietnam. After that you backpack to Ghana where you study Development Studies 2. After a complete year in Vietnam and Ghana you can continue with the bachelors degree in Development Studies at OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University.

«The best part of studying with Scandinavian students is their “new” perspectives on peace and Conflict Studies. They see everything from a European point of view. It is always refreshing to see something through somebody else’s “glasses”.» Ritika Singh, scholarship holder from Nepal

A YEAR OF SPANISH In collaboration with universities in Argentina and Nicaragua we give you the opportunity to become fluent in Spanish, by living, studying and traveling in Latin America. The combination of Spanish studies, a Spanish speaking everyday life and specialised university teachers provide you with the opportunity of becoming fluent in Spanish and gives you a life long access to the Spanish speaking world.

Morrissey from South Africa did his doctoral studies in International Development Studies at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on how environmental factors affect migration amongst small-scale farmers in the north of Ethiopia. As lecturer and responsible for the subject International Environmental Studies, he can see similarities between his own research from various countries south of Sahara. ÂŤI believe I have primarily used the Ghanaian background to show to what degree the environmental agenda is decided far from Africa south of Sahara, even though the big challenge is in Africa south of Sahara! I think this focus coincides with the students own experiences during the rest of the course, which in big part is about seeing the world from a new perspective.Âť James Morrissey
