Khalifa University’s Petroleum Institute (PI) is a multidisciplinary research unit focused primarily on upstream and downstream hydrocarbon exploration and production. Our mission is to conduct applied and fundamental research and development of the key technologies required to maintain the UAE’s position at the forefront of innovation in the oil and gas industry. Khalifa University has three flagship research institutes that serve as interdisciplinary research units focused on long-term strategic priorities:

Masdar Institute Focuses primarily on sustainable energy, water and the environment

Petroleum Institute Focuses primarily on upstream and downstream hydrocarbon exploration and production

Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute Focuses primarily on robotics and intelligent machines, data science, next-gen networks, system-on-chip technologies and intelligent cybersecurity



Through PI, Khalifa University is positioning sustainable hydrocarbon exploration and production as a central focus of its integrated academic and research activities, which it is further developing by channeling the broad expertise of its faculty. Institute Facilities: ADNOC Research and Innovation Center (ADRIC) • 39 labs covering reservoir rock characterization, reservoir fluid characterization, reservoir development, geophysics, gas processes, and materials and corrosion

State-of-the-art Research Labs Enhanced Oil Recovery Lab, Core Analysis Lab, Thermodynamic Fluids Lab, Flow Assurance Lab, Catalysis Lab, and Central Analytical Facility


To catalyze research and development activity and outputs from PI, two specialized research centers are affiliated with the Institute to bolster its R&D capability: Center for Catalysis and Separation (CeCaS) Addressing broad industrial catalysis challenges in membranes, reactors, materials, and renewable energy. Research and Innovation Center on CO2 and Hydrogen (RICH) Researching and developing novel carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies as well as hydrogen production, storage and distribution. Under its main research thrusts, PI is pioneering use-inspired projects with the aim to provide commercially viable oil and gas solutions locally and globally.
