Dr. Tim Blumentritt, Dean College of Continuing and Professional Education

Achievement is Unlimited The power of education is tremendous. If you are reading this Course Catalog, I want to congratulate you on taking the first step toward an incredible future. Just like you, I am embarking on a new journey as interim dean of KSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education. I’ve been an Owl since 2006, serving in the Coles College of Business, Distance Learning, and President’s Emerging Global Scholars program. As I continue to learn about continuing education and all of the opportunities it provides, it is important to highlight how one person revolutionized programs for adult learners in Georgia. Barbara Calhoun’s contributions to professional education – not only at KSU but worldwide – is unmatched. For more than two decades, Barbara’s leadership propelled our programs to be recognized by state, national and international organizations. Kenneth Danter is another person who is focused on making a major impact. He chose continuing education classes – Cisco and Ethical Hacker – to complement his aviation electronics experience in the Navy. After completing our courses, Kenneth passed industry-level certification tests and secured a new job. And he’s set his eyes on another goal – read about it on Page 40. Our Online Technology programs are listed on pages 29How you will leave your mark? More importantly – how can education be the catalyst? Save the date: August 2 is our Open House. Take this very important step toward what could be a limitless path of achievement and excellence. See you soon.

Veteran merges experience in the military with high-demand certifications

Infrared detection, radar, and

laser technologies were part of Ken Danter’s nine-year Navy career. As he transitioned to civilian life, he began to seek opportunities that would complement his experience. Knowing the traditional four-year degree was not something he wanted to pursue, Danter found the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) credential was a perfect fit. The certification seamlessly merged his experience in the military with a successful career in computer networking. “I am used to getting certificates in the Navy,” Danter said. “I came across CCPE and realized that the college offered VA benefits for industry-recognized certifications. I took that [opportunity].” The course helped to broaden his skill set, gain the ability to manage and optimize network systems, and pass the CCNA certification exam. Shortly after, Danter accepted a position as a network engineer. “I had zero experience in networking,” he said. “The only experience I had was classroom time, lab time and my certificate. As soon as you get that certificate, doors just open for you.” Danter’s progression in the technology sector continued to evolve as he pursued the CCNA Cyber Ops certification through the Cisco Networking Academy. This certification introduced Danter to the world of cybersecurity – a newfound interest that led him to CCPE for the second time. “It was predestined,” Danter said. “As soon as I got the CCNA Cyber-Ops, the flyer came in the mail [announcing] that KSU was offering the Ethical

Hacker [certificate].” He enrolled the next day and was able to mark his next career milestone when he earned the Certified Ethical Hacker designation. “The test was certainly not easy, but the class prepares you for it pretty well,” Danter said. “This course teaches proficiency, practical use and safety.” He said that 2-week bootcamps don’t provide a comprehensive overview of assessing ethical and legal requirements of security assessment, analyzing different phases of hacking, recommending strategies for evaluating the security of various systems, and implementing the appropriate level of security controls like our course does. As a security operations analyst at SecureWorks – a subsidiary of Dell Technologies – Danter now works alongside a team of professionals who provide information security services. He said the team is the “frontline for many companies around the world.” “It is all about protecting people,” he continued. “It is unfortunate when you hear stories of people getting hacked, losing money, sensitive data and becoming victims. The hacker only has to be right one time, and the defense has to be right all the time.” Since starting his new role, Danter found there is a lack of awareness among the public about Certified Ethical Hackers. As a security professional, he is now advocating for the field. “People are afraid of what they don’t understand,” Danter said. “Unethical hacking will happen without you knowing. [Ethical Hackers] cannot do anything without written permission. [The CEH] is an industry standard for a reason.” Danter’s long-term vision for the future is to start his own security consulting company. In the meantime, he continues to seek opportunities for growth and development – including pursuing another certification. “Technology moves fast and often,” Danter said. “It’s about gaining knowledge and staying ahead of the curve.”

What kind of writer are you? Have a way with words but trying to figure out what genre or field suits your style? Writers come in all different varieties. Not everyone is cut out to write a novel, but then again, you might have a story inside you waiting to get out. You could even use your knack for writing to help launch a lucrative career.

Answer the questions below to see what kind of writer you are — or could be. Along the way, we’ll share links to online courses in case you need a little training to freshen your skills, advice from an expert author or just the motivation and know-how to reach your goals.

1) Do you like writing about facts or making things up?

If you like to spin a yarn based more on imagination than reality, you’re definitely in the realm of fiction. Skip ahead to Question 7. If not, continue on. Either way, you’ll need to know the basics, like how to use the language properly (yes, your English teacher was right — grammar matters) and how to research to find the information you need. You’ll also need to have the determination to stick with it. Writing takes a lot of work, but it’s a rewarding pursuit. • Grammar Refresher • Research Methods for Writers • Writing Essentials

2) Do you want to write for personal reflection?

If you want to write about your own experiences, that’s a worthy cause. You may consider being a memoir writer to aid in reflection or even to help you become a better writer in other avenues. This type of writing can be a great exercise for introspection as well as a wonderful way to leave a legacy for loved ones. • Journaling Introduction • Write Your Life Story

3) How are you with technical details?

Have a knack for weeding through systems and processes and making sense of it all? You could be a technical writer! There’s a huge demand for these writers who can translate complex details into everyday vernacular, and the pay is competitive. For this one, it helps to have experience or a professional certificate you could show a prospective employer. Depending on your needs, you can choose from a six-week or three-month course.

Technical writers can also specialize in a specific subject area, from finance to contracts to information systems. One approach is to start with a foundation in the craft of technical writing and then advance to a specialization as you become more experienced. • Technical Writing Fundamentals • Technical Writing Certificate • Writing Contracts

4) Want to write for a business but don’t like the technical side?

Congratulations! You’re a copywriter. Or you can be. Businesses need professionals who can write compelling content about their products and services. You could write for digital or print media or both, and it could be long-form or short-form. The business needs will determine the project specs, but a solid understanding of business writing will help you excel. • Business and Marketing Writing • Effective Business Writing • Write Effective Web Content

5) Would you rather help a nonprofit raise money?

Hello there, grant writer. Similar to technical and business writing, grant writing is an in-demand field that requires gifted writers who can capture the essence of the material in a clear, readable format. Grant writers most commonly work for charities, creating grant proposals to help their organization get the necessary funds to carry out their mission. This is an especially great career choice for those who like to have a greater purpose in their 9-to-5. • A to Z Grantwriting • Becoming a Grant Writing Consultant • Get Grants • Grant Proposal Writing Advanced • Writing Effective Grant Proposals • Grant Writing Certificate

6) Do you want to write for the public at large?

You’re a journalist! As a journalist or freelance writer, you can target a range of publications: newspapers, magazines and blogs, whether it’s your own or someone else’s. You may want to consider focusing on a specific subject matter, such as food, travel, politics or another popular topic. From there, continue to hone your writing skills and expand your portfolio. You may also end of writing your own book: a nonfiction narrative about an experience, individual or topic that you find compelling. The sky’s the limit! • Craft of Magazine Writing • Blogging and Podcasting for Beginners • Travel Writing • Write and Publish Your Nonfiction Book

7) Are you ready to write from your imagination?

If you skipped past all that nonfiction writing above, you already know you’re a fiction writer. You don’t need a degree in creative writing to become an author, but support from other writers and guided workshops can help. Stretch your creativity with challenges like National Novel Writing Month or take a class to refine your art. Just like a technical skill, creativity takes practice. • Fiction Writing • Write Fiction Like a Pro • Writeriffic - Creativity Training for Writers • Writeriffic 2 - How to Make Money From Your Writing • Creative Writing Certificate

8) Is there a genre of fiction that captures your interest?

You could be a genre writer, but don’t think only about subject matter, like romances and historical fiction. Consider different forms, such as plays, novels and short stories. Think about possible audiences: adults, teens, children. The classes below may help you get started, but spend a while reflecting on what types of fiction writing you most enjoy. And the best advice? Read! • Introduction to Screenwriting • Mystery Writing • Writing Fantasy Novels • Writing for Children • Writing Young Adult Fiction

9) Ready to share your work with the world?

Some people write for their own sake or a small audience of friends and family. If you want the public to read your work, then you should be a published author. There are many routes to publication, from literary agents to selfpublication. Much of it depends on what type of work you’re creating. These resources will help you get started. • Beginner’s Guide to Getting Published • Publish and Sell Your e-Books Whether you make it famous, land a technical writing gig or finally put those personal memoirs on paper, we hope you’ll drop us a line to let us know how it goes. Now, get out there and start writing!
