TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS: Several will offer extra credit SCIENCE

SUMMER READING RECOMMENDATIONS 2012 Monument Mountain Regional High School “No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.” - Confucius

MS. YOUNG: Will offer extra credit with a book review for the library and a brief presentation to the class on any of these titles: The Hot Zone by Richard Preston ** The Double Helix by James Watson Rosalind Franklin: The Dark Lady of DNA by Barbara Maddix ** Any book by Robin Cook, Patricia Cornwell or Michael Crichton ** It’s Not About the Bike by Lance Armstrong

SOCIAL STUDIES Students can experience a “summer slide” in their academic skills. Reading over the summer is one way to maintain those critical skills necessary for academic success. Studies show that students who participate in summer reading not only achieve higher scores on reading achievement tests, but return to school ready to learn with more enjoyment and confidence in their reading (Dominican University, 2010). Students perceive reading to

be important. Stephen Krashen (2004), a leading linguist and language researcher, showed that one of the most overlooked methods of improving reading is by providing a supply of interesting and accessible books to students. Self-

selection of reading materials is key to reading success. To support MMRHS students in their summer reading selections, I have put together a list of some suggestions for great reading – everything from the classics to some current YA literature. Several teachers have also made suggestions for their specific classes and will offer extra credit if you read those books. Enjoy, happy reading, and let me know if I can help you select a book.
