Senior citizens exempted from 12% VAT? The Philippine President Gloria M. Arroyo signed a law bill exempting at least 4.6 million senior citizens from paying 12-percent value-added tax (VAT) on goods and services. Arroyo signed the Expanded Senior Citizens Benefits Act of 2010 or Republic Act 9994 on February 16. “With the signing of the Expanded Senior Citizens Benefits Act, our elderly can now expect additional financial assistance to help them weather the uncertainties of old age in an uncertain global economy,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Gary Olivar said He also said the President inked the law despite potential revenue losses amounting to P1.68 billion every year from such tax relief measure for elderly. Under the Republic Act 9257, the original law, senior citizens only get to enjoy an 8-percent discount because of the imposition of the 12-percent VAT, but with the pas-
sage of the expanded law, they would enjoy the full 20-percent discount when buying medicines and other products. Ratified by both Houses of Congress on Jan. 8, the law also entitles indigent or non-pensioner senior citizens to a monthly pension of P500; free medical insurance and disability assistance through PhilHealth, including free anti-flu and anti-pneumonia vaccines; and a P2,000 burial assistance.
may also enjoy a five-percent discount on their water and electric bills, on condition that the utilities are in the name of senior citizen and that the consumption is below 100 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 30 cubic meters water a month. Those establishments found violating any provision of law will be slapped with a penalty of between P10,000 and P50,000, or imprisonment of at least one month but not more than six months.
The discount also applies in hotels, restaurants and similar establishments; cinemas, theaters and other places of culture, leisure and amusement; and funeral homes. Under the new law, senior citizens
However, there are mixed reactions among senior citizens to RA 9994. Some welcomed the new law, a few were not aware of its benefits, others are skeptical on whether it could be implemented at all.

Australia will have its first Roman Catholic Saint Mary MacKillop will be canonized along with a monk from Quebec, who will be the Canadian province’s first male saint, a Pole, a Spaniard and two Italian nuns, he said. MacKillop, a nun revered for her work with needy children as much as for her rebellious streak, is already a national icon. She will be the first Australian saint. Melbourne-born MacKillop established her first school in a disused and founded an order of nuns at the age of 24. She spent her life educating the poor, taking learning to the harsh outback. MacKillop told all the sisters she trained that they had to care for children as if they were their own. Her canonization is considered a terrific salute to an outstanding Australian, a giant leader in education and many other fields. Mackillop died in 1909, passed the first stage to sainthood when Pope John Paul II beatified her in 1995 after recognizing a first miracle attributed to her, in which a woman was said to have been cured of terminal leukemia. In December, Benedict recognized a miracle in which she apparently cured a woman of cancer, paving the way for her canonization.

Australia have five million Catholics making up about onequarter of the population. The Pope also announced that Brother Andre, revered for his gifts as a healer, would become Quebec’s first male saint. Brother Andre lived from 1845 to 1937 and his admirers built and dedicated Montreal’s imposing St. Joseph’s Oratory to him. He has been credited with thousands of reported miraculous healings. Diminutive, shy and with little education, he hardly seemed destined to become Quebec’s first Catholic saint. But he reputedly could heal the sick through the laying on of
In the nave of St. Joseph’s Oratory dozens of canes are testimony to the cures attributed to Brother Andre, who was born Alfred Bessette. When he died on January 6, 1937, at the age of 91, nearly a million mourners filed past his coffin. Andre was beatified in 1978 by John Paul II, and a miracle healing was officially recognized by the Vatican on December 19, 2009, marking the two steps towards his canonization. Pope Benedict said the other saints to be created were Poland’s Stanislas Soltys (1433-1489), Spain’s Candida Maria de Jesus Cipitria y Barriola (1845-1912) and Italian nuns Giulia Salzano (1846-1929) and Camilla Battista Varanno (1458-1524).

Healthy Habits How a Psyllium Easy Ways to Add Fiber Diet Fiber to Your Diet Benefits Your Heart Mr. Anthony Wu founder of RICA International, holding Chinese Medicine in The University of Hong Kong.
Have the whole thing.
Instead of eating processed white bread, white pasta, or white rice, opt for whole-wheat or wholegrain bread, whole-wheat pasta, and brown rice. “Whole” products are not only high in fiber, but they also keep you feeling full.
Keep it skinny.
When eating fruits and vegetables, keep the skin intact. The skin of fruits and vegetables contains extra fiber, so keep it on and eat it up to gain the most nutritional benefit. To get even more nutrients from your favorite fruits and veggies, eat them raw. Cooking fruits and vegetables sacrifices some of their fiber and nutrient content, so savor them in their crunchy, au natural form.
Boost your breakfast and your fiber.
Start every morning with a healthy serving of fiber to fill you up and energize you for the day. Stock your cabinet with high-fiber breakfast options such as bran cereal and steelcut oatmeal. Add even more fiber to these healthy diet choices by topping them with fiber-rich fruit. Add fresh blueberries, raspberries, or sliced bananas to your cold cereal. When you don’t have fresh fruit on hand, don’t panic—you can add frozen fruit to oatmeal just before cooking it.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 & 9 Fatty Acids The potential benefit of omega-3 fatty acids was first documented by several researchers studying the Inuit Eskimos in the 1970s. Despite their high fat diets and resulting obesity, the Inuits had a low rate of death from heart disease. Given that the Inuits’ diet consisted primarily of cold-water fish, the researchers concluded that this type of fat—omega-3 fatty acids—mattered more than how much fat was eaten.1 Since then, thousands of studies have made similar conclusions: omega-3 fatty acids provide considerable health benefits for the gastrointestinal, neurological, cardiovascular, circulatory, and other systems. But what are fatty acids? Essential Fatty Acids The essential fatty acids—called essential because the body cannot make them on its own— are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These essential fats must come from the diet. And they must come from the diet in a balanced ratio. When the ratio of the essential fatty acids becomes imbalanced—that is, when the omega-6s overwhelm the omega-3s or vice versa—the body experiences inflammation which can result in serious chronic inflammatory conditions. It’s precisely an imbalance between the essential fats that’s wreaking havoc on our health today. Americans get substantially more omega-6 fats than omega3s. And the more omega-6 fats are consumed, the more the body is unable to

in the body than do EPA and DHA, enzymes in the body can convert ALA to EPA if needed. Dark green leafy vegetables— and flax, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, soybeans, and their oils—are all excellent sources of ALA. Adults should get about 1.6 grams of ALA each day. If a pregnant woman or a breastfeeding mother has enough ALA, her fetus or infant should have enough. For infants who are not breast-fed, look for formulas with 1.5% ALA.2 EPA and DHA. The animalbased EPA and DHA fatty acids have reaped the most attention, particularly for their hearthealthy benefits. Unfortunately, because the richest sources of EPA and DHA fatty acids are generally unavailable, they’re not often found in the American diet. Oily cold-water, wild-caught fish (salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, sardines, anchovy, halibut) and wild game (particularly, venison and buffalo) are excellent sources of EPA and DHA fats. And because of its powerful health benefits, some farmers are now feeding their chickens plants instead of grain in order to produce omega-3 enriched eggs. For those who don’t eat wild fish and game, though, there are some healthy alternatives. Daily doses of fish oil have been shown to provide the equivalent of 2-3 or more servings—as recommended by the American Heart Association—of wild fish or game each week. Most fish oils come in a concentrated liquid or capsule form such as RICA Omega-3, and adults should take at least 3,000-4,000 mg per day (a 1,000 mg fish oil capsule contains 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA).2 Pregnant women need lots of omega-3s to nourish the developing brains of the fetus. If the mother does not get enough omega-3s, the growing fetus will take all that’s available, depleting the mother and leaving her susceptible to depression.4 A breast-feeding mother also needs an adequate supply of omega-3s to continue nourishing her child’s brain. If breastfeeding is not possible, then look for infant formulas containing 0.35% DHA, 1.5% ALA, and less than 0.1% EPA.2 Clearly, a balance of the essential fatty acids—omega3 and omega-6—is critical to fighting the invisible inflammation that occurs inside the body and leads to more serious conditions. While omega-6 can block or promote inflammation, it only does so in response to the amount of omega-3 received by the body. So let’s take a look at how omega-3s positively affect inflammation in the body. The Role of Omega-3s in Inflammatory Conditions Inflammation used to be considered a sign of infection. The body’s normal defense system would turn “on” to fend off everything from cuts to colds to cancer, then turn “off” when the threat had passed. Now, it appears to be more complicated than that. Conditions that once seemed to defy reason have now become leading killers—and it appears chronic inflammation is to blame. Coronary Heart Disease In systematic reviews of the available evidence, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) reported that eating fish or taking a fish oil supplement high in omega-3 fatty acids offers powerful benefits for
heart health by reducing: • Heart attack and other issues related to heart and blood vessel disease in those who already have the disease. • The risk of death in those with heart and blood vessel diseases. • The level of triglycerides, a fat in the blood that may contribute to heart disease. • Blood pressure. • The risk of coronary artery re-blockage after angioplasty. • The risk of irregular heart beats or arrhythmia.5 Clearly, the evidence for using omega-3s for controlling inflammation and having better heart health is compelling!

John Lloyd and Bea Jake Cuenca: New A new Jolina remain only a love team playboy in town? Magdangal this 2010 If there’s a love team in showbiz that movie fanatics would like to become real life lovers or couple, that would be John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen at the moment unless cupid fires love arrows and bind them together, or if fate intervenes. Despite their love team remaining only as a love team, John and Bea admitted that they missed each other’s company since working together in the series “I Love Betty La Fea.” And their latest movie under Star Cinema entitled “Miss You Like Crazy” was a welcome movie project for their tandem’s comeback. “Personally I missed working with John Lloyd because it’s been a long time,” Bea related in Filipino. “It was nice to be working with him again and I learned a lot again from him. It’s a new experience once again working with Lloydie!” John Lloyd agreed with Bea. He expressed, “I’ve waited a long time for our movie together. You know when a love team stops working, their closeness diminishes. Because of this film our closeness was renewed and we’re both happy.”
“Miss You Like Crazy” is the story of John Lloyd and Bea meeting and falling in love with each other unexpectedly.
“Wala, wala,” he said, laughing. Jake recently signed up for a two-year exclusive contract with ABS-CBN. The signing up was attended by ABS-CBN’s Channel Head Cory Vidanes, Entertainment Head Linggit Tan, Business Unit Head Deo Endrinal and Jake’s manager Neil de Guia. “Sila ang nagbigay sa akin ng big breaks ko. I’m really proud to be signing here today,” Jake said.
The problem is that John Lloyd is already in a relationship with Maricar Reyes when he met Bea. In the movie directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, moviegoers will find out who John Lloyd will choose between the two, Maricar or Bea “A love story is universal and in the film we tried something new. We hope that moviegoers will like it. A love story becomes different on how you tell it, the characters and the way the story is told,” described Cathy Garcia of the latest John Lloyd/Bea movie. What to expect too is the kissing scenes of John Lloyd and Bea which the director described to be at a “higher level” than their past films. The kissing scenes according to the director was shot in two days! The director also admitted that she had qualms asking her actors to do the kissing scenes because she may be asking too much from them and it has been a long time since they worked with each other.

“Si Oyo ang tagal ko ng kakilala. Very responsible na tao, hindi siya showbiz na tao at sa tamang panahon ay magsasalita din ‘yon.
For Locsin’s part, meanwhile, the actress said she is happy to learn that Sotto has finally found his “happiness.”
At least happy ako na nakita na niya ang happiness niya,” Locsin said. Hermosa and Sotto met on the set of “Enteng Kabisote.”
Although they never admitted the real status of their relationship, rumor has it that the 2 were inseparable.
Jericho Rosales does not mind playing second lead in his next film project Jericho Rosales does not mind playing second lead in the first movie team-up of real-life father and daughter Gabby Concepcion and KC. The talented actor justifies that it is already a privilege to be working with the fatherdaughter tandem in a quality movie. “I’m cool with that as long as may (substance) ‘yung movie. May saysay siya, eh,” Echo stressed. “I think it’s a good project also, it’s about second chances. It’s a Father’s Day presentation (from Star Cinema).” Jericho plays the love interest of KC’s character in the movie but admitted that the focus of the film revolves around the father and daughter relationship. Echo says that he welcomes different characters and that the real challenge for him is pulling off even a simple role convincingly. “I’m praying to be given different and unusual roles. I always
look for challenges.” Echo says that he has not yet started shooting for the movie but is already preparing for it. “I think they’re revis-
ing the script and by March ang (start ng) shooting,” he explains. This is Jericho’s first film project with the celebrity father and daughter, but he has worked with Gabby previously in the teleserye Dahil May Isang Ikaw and with KC in Katy, a stage play.
Considered to be one of today’s most brilliant actors, Echo adds that he prefers not to compete with his contemporaries, such as John Lloyd Cruz. “I’ve never competed with anybody ever since I’ve started,” he reveals. “This is what I can do and I do my best all the time whatever task I’m given, that’s what I focus on,” He also gives credit to his costars in every powerful performance he does. “For me, it’s always good to be acting with good actors. You’re as good as your co-actors. Kung magaling siya, magbibigayan kayo and you come up with a good product.”

a + b = 3 Ltd Financial Literacy - Because money is more than adding up figures
FINANCIAL LITERACY Cheap or Expensive? This article is the seventh in our business series: you are ready to start your business: you have researched what you could sell, to whom and how; you have listed your future expenses – the one-offs to start with, and the recurring expenses that you will keep having to run your business on a daily basis. You have listed your income. Thanks to your lists, you have evaluated how much profit you would make and how much cash should go out (the payments you do) and come in (the money you will receive). Great – but there is one thing you need to think carefully of: and not just before starting your business; you will have to review it often when running your business: your prices! This is probably the most difficult thing to set for a business person: if your prices are too high, customers will be put off and won’t buy your products. But if set too low, you will miss the opportunity to make more money. Or maybe, you will sell your products at a loss (at a lower price than they really cost you to buy or make). So, what’s the right balance? There are several ways to set prices. Let’s go through them one by one. First way: you calculate how much your product costs you. If you are in a retail business, this is easy: it is the price you buy your products from the manufacturer or the
wholesaler, plus any additional costs (delivery for example). If you make your own products, you just add up the costs of raw material that you use to make them, your time, and divide by the numbers of products you make: you will get the cost for one product. You are working in services? Try to time how many hours or minutes you take to deliver your service, and value it at how much you would pay an employee for these tasks. Once you know how much your products cost you, you can add a mark-up and decide this is the price at which you are going to sell them. For example, you have found out that an hour of babysitting costs you $50 (your time, plus a share of the books, toys, etc… you need, plus some food and a nappy, for example), you decide to take a 50% mark-up: your selling price is $50 x 50% = $75. This way, you are sure to make money (you cover your costs and have a mark-up) BUT you may be completely out of the market, either too low or too high. The second method is to find out what competitors do. You should have gathered this information already when researching your market: make a spreadsheet, and keep updating – all your business life long! You can write your customer name, their products, a quick description and the price they sell it. Is it hard to get the information? You can always ask friends or family members to be one-time customers of your competitors and gather the information. Then you decide whether you want your prices to be in the same range as your competitors, or lower, or higher. This is called
“positioning”: some branded products (try to think of examples!) sell at a higher price and keep having customers because they sell their product plus the image of wearing such brand’s clothes or the promise of eating or drinking a quality branded product. But what happens if your competitors are wrong? The third method is to find out what price your customers are really ready to pay for your products or services. This is the best to make sure you don’t sell too high or too low. How? You ask friends or people: you test several prices with sample products. If you end up with very different answers, you can split your products or services in two or three different ones: a cheap basic one, an average price standard one and an expensive “VIP” one. This way, you can get the most of your markets. Even though this method is the best to maximise your prices, keep calculating your costs to see how much money you make by product (and reduce your costs if needed) and keep an eye on what competitors do! Finally, be clear on how you communicate your prices and don’t change too often, once you have decided. Prices are a big part of a company’s image! Pope calls on faithful to use Lent as opportunity for spiritual renewal Pope Benedict XVI marked the start of the solemn Lenten season on February 17, 2010 by sprinkling ashes on the bowed heads of faithful in a Roman Catholic tradition. Ash Wednesday services for Roman Catholics worldwide usher in a period of penitence and reflection that leads up to Easter Sunday, this year being celebrated on April 4. Benedict pinched a bit of ash from a silver-colored bowl held out to him by an aide, and then distributed the ashes to prelates, other clergy and lay people, including children, who approached him one by one in St. Sabina’s Basilica on Rome’s ancient Aventine Hill. The Pope in his homily said that humanity needs to hope in a world that is more just, and he invited every faithful to use Lent as an opportunity for spiritual renewal.
Rafael is 8 years old, umiinom siya ng Chlorella Ai na best seller ng RICA International Food Supplements. His mom, Ms. Rowena Madayag has been working in Hong Kong and just like any mothers in Hong Kong dahil malayo sa pamilya worried siya sa anak na si Rafael na lagging matamlay at ayaw magaral. Subalit na confirm naman ng kanyang teacher na it was his own effort.

Bituin Ganigan, 46, Fanling N.T. Then one time nakakuha ako ng KabayanSTAR newspaper sa World Wide House.

OFW of the MONTH “I love my children and they are my inspiration everyday.” Our OFW of the month is 50 years old and she has been working in one employer for 14 years. Ms. Milagros Matis is from Paykek Kapangan Benguet. Her husband is also from Kapangan Benguet who also worked overseas for 20 years before he decided to go home for good and he is now taking care of their last son who is a special child because of his late development. They are blessed of 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons. Their first 2 daughters have experienced working with their mom in the same house since ate Mila’s employer needs 2 maids. Does it mean she has a good life as domestic helper? Well, her employers are good employers but it didn’t mean she has an easy job. “Noong first time ko sa kanila kasama namin yong kapatid nilang disabled. Hindi makalakad kaya siya naka wheelchair so kailangan namin siyang buhatin, paliguan at e assist sa lahat niyang gagawin,” ate Mila said. The lady has bad temper which is usually normal to people who are disabled
so ate Mila did her best to do her job with patience. She bear in mind that her employer’s sister is one of the reason why she is in Hong Kong. She also put in mind the reason why she came to Hong Kong that is to earn money and be able to send her children to school so she loved her work as she love her children. “Masayang-masaya ako every time na may magtatapos sa kanila lalo na ngayong na reach ng dalawang anak ko ang dream nilang makapunta sa Canada. I love my children and they are my inspiration.” “Noong kinuha ko yong unang anak kong naging kasama ko sa bahay mangiyak-ngiyak siya pero sinabihan ko siya at yong sumunod na parte ng trabaho ang hirap. Wala silang magandang future kung di nila dadanasin ang hirap.” Ate Ma. Teresa, 48
Mila have seen how her two daughters worked hard para makamit ang kanilang mga pangarap. Both of them are now working in Canada. “Pinapauwi nila ako para mag rest na raw pero ayokong iasa sa kanila ang mga dalawa kong anak na nagaaral pa. Habang malakas pa ako magtatrabaho pa ako dito.” But she also said she is considering her daughters’ suggestion that is to go home for good.
In 1906, the very first group of Filipinos arrived in Hawaii. However, the major migration to this American territory occurred a couple decades later. The first known native from the Philippines landing in Honolulu were a band of musician just before the end the 18th century. During those years Filipino men left their wives and children at home in the hope that they could earn money and return home or send back for their families. This has given difficulty to the men that caused them depression. In the 1920’s, these Filipinos were considered a lonely bunch of men. They entertained themselves with things like cockfighting, gambling, and traveling brothels. They appeared to be gentle and affectionate men, but other immigrants still looked at them with distrust. In one part of Hawaii, a rumor got started that Filipinos would attack any girl walking alone on the road. Therefore girls would panic when they saw a Filipino approach. In 1928, a group of newly arrived Filipinos were sent back when it was discovered they were literate. Those who came with degrees or professions had to fake stupidity to remain in the American territory. In the 1950s, things were different. The Filipino bachelor was no longer a norm in Hawaii. On the other hand, more Filipinos were there with whole families and were taking pride in their heritage. The rise of the multiracial middle class in the 1950s included the Filipinos, who were making upwardly mobile status in jobs and professions. According to a story the word “blackball” was applied to a lot of Filipinos in the Philippines and Hawaii because of heavy strike and labor activity. The word was later corrupted to our language “bulakbul” meaning lazy and later to a kid who did not want to study or work. These are the “bulakbul” of different kind.

WARNING TO THOSE WHO OPPRESS THE POOR This issue is an encouragement to everyone who suffers maltreatment, injustice, oppression, harassment, neglect and abuse from others. I want to let you know that God sees your condition and calls you to cry out to him in prayer. He hears you and longs to help you in your time of need. God calls you to turn to him. I also write to warn people who oppress the poor, abuse the weak, unjustly treat their workers. God has a clear word for you - judgment is coming. I make a special call to employers who abuse their helpers, such as demand long hours of work without just pay, deprive their workers of sleep and food, and verbally abuse their helpers. I warn employment agencies who connive with employers for monetary benefit. Government and consulate workers who fail to protect the poor, be warned. You are now under judgment, and more will come unless you turn to God in humility and repentance. You will soon be brought to justice either by the law or by God to face his wrath against workers of injustice.
God’s Care for the Poor To the weak and poor read this: God cares for you and calls you to call on him, to trust and rely on him. Jesus reveals his heart for the poor when he begun his public ministry by announcing, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19 (NIV). God is saying, “I came for you - the poor, the blind, the oppressed. The OT further reveals God’s
care for the poor. God says the poor will always be around. He then set laws to protect and provide for them. Deuteronomy 16:11-14 contains this beautiful command. The people were to tithe twice. The first tithe was for the support of the Levites, those who work full time in the temple. He second tithe was specifically designed for his temple servants and the poor. God wants the poor to be able to feast on good and choice food for free! And here’s one more: on the third year, the second tithe was to be used at home, in entertaining the Levite and the poor. They were to hold parties and invite the Levites and the poor, as Moses said, “that they may eat within in thy gates, and be filled.” Deut. 26:12. See, Deut. 15:7-37; 24:19-22; Lev. 19:9-10; 25:5-23; Exo. 23:10,11. Let me clarify the Word here. God does not see poverty as a blessing or riches as a curse. The poor are not blessed because they are poor. Gustav Gutierrez, a well known liberation theologian warns about taking “poor” in Luke 6:20 as referring to the “materially poor.” He reminds us that the poor are poor not by any choice on their part but by a socio-economic situation which had been imposed on them.” (Gutierrez, p 297). Mr. Rodriguez sees this passage correctly, of course. Taken out of context Luke 6:20-22 might read as a blessing of poverty. But to do so would be wrong for it misrepresents Jesus’ words.
