HK OFWs claim initial victory on OEC debacle Foods That Feed POLO chief declares moratorium on OWWA fee for OEC “This is an initial victory brought about by the quick response of OFW organizations in Hong Kong to confront the labour office on this practice. Collection of OWWA fee in HK is voluntary and should not be wrongly put as conditionality to get an OEC.” This was stated by Dolores Balladares, chairperson of the United Filipinos in Hong Kong (UNIFIL-MIGRANTE-HK), as Labour Attache Romy Salud declared a moratorium until December 30 on the mandatory collection of OWWA fee as requisite to getting an Overseas Employment Certificate. Labatt Salud verbally issued the moratorium after the UNIFIL and a staff of the Mission for Migrant Workers (MFMW) engaged him in a dialogue after getting refused to be given an OEC. “In this period when OFWs will take their vacation in droves, this is a relief from the financial burdens we already carry. There really is no basis for forcing
us to pay the OWWA fee first before we can be given an OEC and such should be upheld even after December 30,” Balladares added. The collection, exposed by the group in the past few weeks, was hit by Balladares as another financial burden for OFWs who are going home for the holidays and require an OEC for their travel back to Hong Kong. “The OEC ensures our exemption from paying the travel tax and airport fee. To forcibly make us pay another fee is but another unjust money-making scheme especially now that many of us have to contend with the impacts of the recent calamities to our families back home,” Balladares added. UNIFIL yesterday circulated a letter dated February 2002 to the group by former labour attaché in Hong Kong, Bernardino Julve, which affirmed their claim that OWWA fee in HK is voluntary. Said letter further stated that any change will be done only after sufficient consul-
tation with organizations of migrant workers, NGOs and other stakeholders. Balladares urged Labatt Salud and the POLO-HK to make the announcement official and post public notices in the PCG-HK. “OFWs in HK should be properly informed of this policy. We further urge Labatt Salud and the POLO-HK to go beyond the moratorium and abandon the mandatory OWWA fee collection,” Balladares added. Balladares reported that they will continue with their plan to call for a dialogue with the PCG-HK and Philippine labour officials on this issue. “OFWs in HK have been clear from the start in our position to maintain membership to OWWA as voluntary and OEC should be issued without other fees attached. This is still our stance and we shall be watchful of any policy or practice that will circumvent this victory of our campaign,” she concluded

More than 100 thousand Filipino overseas workers in Hong Kong are expecting for the “voluntary OWWA Fee” be finalized. Everyday, Filipino maids are going home for vacation hoping they could have a good bonding with their families though most of them are only given few days leave. It is very disappointing that coming back for work will still require them to shoulder another burden that is to line up for an OEC and pay more dollars before availing the said passes. This coming Christmas season hundreds of DH workers are expected to go home for vacation every day.

Soldiers retrieve more bodies from a shallow grave at the site of a massacre of a political clan that included several journalists in the outskirts of Ampatuan, Maguindanao in southern Philippines.
Arroyo vowed justice for the victims? The clan of the suspect is said to have helped deliver votes for the Arroyo administration in 2004 elections. Though, the President has vowed to give justice for the victims the Human Rights Watch expressed concern that the administration’s relationship with the family would hinder an impartial investigation. Many throughout the Philippines expressed doubt if this promise to 11 more bodies which were found at the site of the attack on an election motorcade in the south that brought the death toll to 57 be granted. Six of the bodies in southern Maguindanao province were discovered in a large pit buried alongside three vehicles, and five were found in a mass grave a few kilometers off the main highway. The massacre included the wife and two sisters of gubernatorial candidate Ismael Mangudadatu and 18 Filipino journalists accompanying the motorcade. It is said to be the largest number of reporters killed in a single attack anywhere in the world. According to a report Police identified the prime suspect as Andal Ampatuan Jr., a scion of the powerful Ampatuan clan led by the former provincial governor. The clan, which has ruled the province unopposed for eight years, helped President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her allies win the 2004 presidential and 2007 senatorial elections by delivering crucial votes. Mangudadatu, after receiving death threats, had sent his wife and relatives to submit his candidacy. He wanted to challenge Andal Ampatuan Jr., who serves as a town mayor and whose family has ruled the province with an iron fist backed up by private armies and legions of bodyguards. Mangudadatu said four people whom he refused to identify told him the convoy was stopped by dozens of gunmen loyal to Ampatuan. Police are investigating reports that Ampatuan, four police commanders, and dozens of police and pro-government militiamen were among the gunmen who blocked the convoy.
(above) Police investigators tag a body found in a shallow grave at the massacre site of a political clan that included several journalists in the outskirts of Ampatuan, Maguindanao in southern Philippines November 25, 2009. The latest death toll in the massacre is 52, police said on Wednesday.
The hand of one of dead victims lies across a police line at a hillside in Datu Ampatuan, Maguindanao province, southern Philippines, on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009. Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo placed two southern provinces under a state of emergency, giving security forces free hand to pursue gunmen who killed at least 24 people in one of the country’s worst election massacres. AP
“This is a supreme act of inhumanity that is a blight on our nation,” she said in a statement. “The perpetrators will not escape justice. The law will haunt them until they are caught.”
Dead bodies lie on the ground near their vehicles at the crime scene of a massacre of a political clan that included several journalists in the outskirts of Ampatuan. The Philippines sacked the provincial police chief and sent hundreds of extra troops to a southern region on Tuesday where gunmen killed people in the worst-ever election related violence in the country. On Monday, about 100 gunmen abducted a group of people going to file a nomination for the provincial governor’s post in Maguindanao. A group of about 40 people, including women and local journalists, were taken away by gunmen who opened fire on them, investigators said. A local leader said four survivors were in hiding.

Efren Peñaflorida the new 2009 CNN Hero of the Year Embodying the spirit of Filipino volunteerism that bloomed in this stormy year, Efren Peñaflorida Jr. was named CNN Hero of the Year. The Cavite City native pioneered a brand of mobile education, or the “pushcart classroom,” for urban poor youth. Peñaflorida, fondly called “Kuya F,” was named 2009 CNN Hero of the Year. In his acceptance speech, he said: “Each person has a hidden hero within; you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need. The 28-year-old Peñaflorida will receive $100,000 from CNN. The network’s top anchor Anderson Cooper announced the winner at the conclusion of the annual awards ceremony. Peñaflorida said that if he wins, he would pledge the prize money to the children that his group, the Dynamic Teen Company, is helping. In his acceptance speech at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CNN quoted him as saying: “Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell my co-volunteers... you are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be.” Peñaflorida won over nine other “CNN heroes,” seven of who were American. One of them, 20-year-old Jordan Thomas, lost both his legs in a boating accident and set up a foundation that provides prosthetics to poor children who have also lost limbs. Last October, CNN opened the online voting for its Top 10 Heroes. Peñaflorida said that being included in the top 10 alone was already an honor. Still, he refused to take credit for the recognition. “If the people vote for me, they are actually voting for the poor kids DTC is teaching and the dedicated volunteers behind this work,” he earlier said. CNN said more than 2.75 million votes were cast during the seven-week online voting. The network, however, did not indicate how many votes Peñaflorida got.

The DTC has now over 2,000 members teaching basic reading and writing, and even personal hygiene to marginalized children in slum areas in Cavite using pushcarts filled with books, pens, tables and chairs.

People killed for fat to make cosmetics A gang in the remote Peruvian jungle has been killing people for their fat, draining it from their corpses and offering it on the black market for use in cosmetics. Three suspects were reported to have confessed to killing five people for their fat. Police of Peru said that 2 the suspects were arrested carrying bottles of liquid fat which they claim worth $60,000 a gallon (NZ$21,000 a liter). They also told the police that the fat was sold to intermediaries in Lima, the Peruvian capital but police suspect the fat was sold to cosmetic companies in Europe.

But medical experts expressed doubt that a major market for fat might exist. Yale University dermatology professor Dr Lisa Donofrio speculated that a small market may exist for “human fat extracts” to keep skin supple, though she said scientifically such treatments are “pure baloney.” Police showed reporters two bottles of fat recovered from the suspects and a photo of the rotting head of a 27-year-old male victim. A 29 year old suspect led police to the head, recovered in a coca-growing valley. Mejia, Peru’s chief of police said that suspect name Castillejos confessed the gang would cut off its victims’ heads, arms and legs, remove the organs, then suspend the torsos from hooks above candles that warmed the flesh as the fat dripped into tubs below. He also told police that the band’s fugitive leader, 56year-old Hilario Cudena, has been killing to extract fat from victims for more than three decades At least 60 people are listed as missing in Huanuco province, where the gang allegedly operated, this year alone, though the province is also home to drug-trafficking leftist rebels. “We received a tip four months ago that human fat from the jungle was being sold in Lima. In August, he said, police infiltrated the band and later obtained some of the amber fluid, which a police lab confirmed as human fat,” the chief of police said. The suspects are charged with homicide, criminal conspiracy, illegal firearms possession and drug trafficking, according to a statement from Lima Superior Court. Police are now searching for the alleged buyer.

Over 100 icebergs seen around N.Zealand Hundreds of Antarctic icebergs were sighted floating towards New Zealand in a rare event which has encouraged a shipping warning. An Australian Antarctic Division glaciologist said the ice chunks, spotted by satellite photography, had passed the Auckland Islands heading towards the main South Island. Scientist Neal Young said more than 100 icebergs; some measuring more than 200 meters (650 feet) across were seen in just one cluster and there could be hundreds more. “They were the remains of a massive ice floe which split from the Antarctic as sea and air temperatures rise due to global warming,” he said. It’s done a long circuit around Antarctica and now the bigger parts of it are breaking up and producing smaller ones. He said large numbers of icebergs had not floated this close to New Zealand since 2006.
New Zealand has already issued coastal navigation warnings for the area in the Southern Ocean where the icebergs have been seen. “It’s really just a general warning for shipping in that area to be on the alert for icebergs,” said Maritime New Zealand spokesman Ross Henderson. The icebergs are smaller remnants of the giant chunks seen off Australia’s Macquarie Island this month, including one estimated at two kilometers (1.2 miles) and another twice the size of Beijing’s “Bird’s Nest” Olympic Stadium. Young earlier told AFP he expected to see more icebergs in the area if the Earth’s temperature continues to increase. He also mentioned that if the current trends in global warming were to continue I would anticipate seeing more icebergs and the large ice shelves breaking up.

Trapped in his own body for 23 years - the coma victim who screamed unheard Kate Connolly in Berlin For 23 years Rom Houben was imprisoned in his own body. He saw his doctors and nurses as they visited him during their daily rounds; he listened to the conversations of his carers; he heard his mother deliver the news to him that his father had died. But he could do nothing. He was unable to communicate with his doctors or family. He could not move his head or weep, he could only listen. Doctors presumed he was in a vegetative state following a nearfatal car crash in 1983. They believed he could feel nothing and hear nothing. For 23 years.

state, said Houben, was like being born again. “I’ll never forget the day that they discovered me,” he said. “It was my second birth”. Experts say Laureys’ findings are likely to reopen the debate over when the decision should be made to terminate the lives of those in comas who appear to be unconscious but may have almost fully-functioning brains. Belgian doctors used an internationally-accepted scale to monitor Houben’s state over the years. Known as the Glasgow Coma Scale, it requires assessment of the eyes, verbal and motor responses. But they failed to assess him correctly and missed signs that his brain was still functioning. Last night his mother, Fina, said in an interview with Belgian RTBF that they had taken him to the US five times for reexamination. The breakthrough came when it became clear that Houben could indicate yes and no

Then a neurologist, Steven Laureys, who decided to take a radical look at the state of diagnosed coma patients, released him from his torture. Using a state-of-the-art scanning system, Laureys found to his amazement that his brain was functioning almost normally. “I had dreamed myself away,” said Houben, now 46, whose real “state” was discovered three years ago, according to a report in the German magazine Der Spiegel this week. Laureys, a neurologist at the University of Liege in Belgium, published a study in BMC Neurology earlier this year saying Houben could be one of many cases of falsely diagnosed comas around the world. He discovered that although Houben was completely paralysed, he was also completely conscious — it was just that he was unable to communicate the fact. Houben now communicates with one finger and a special touchscreen on his wheelchair – he has developed some movement with the help of intense physiotherapy over the last three years. He realised when he came round after his accident, which had caused his heart to stop and his brain to be starved of oxygen for several minutes, that his body was paralysed. Although he could hear every word his doctors spoke, he could not communicate with them. “I screamed, but there was nothing to hear,” he said, via his keyboard. The Belgian former engineering student, who speaks four languages, said he coped with being effectively trapped in his own body by meditating. He told doctors he had “travelled with my thoughts into the past, or into another existence altogether”. Sometimes, he said, “I was only my consciousness and nothing else”. The moment it was discovered he was not in a vegetative
with his foot. “Powerlessness. Utter powerlessness. At first I was angry, then I learned to live with it,” he tapped out on to the screen during an interview with the Belgian network last night, AP reported. Laureys, who is head of the Coma Science Group and department of neurology at Liege University hospital, has advised on several prominent coma cases, such as the American Terri Schiavo, whose life support was withdrawn in 2005 after 15 years in a coma. Laureys concluded that coma patients are misdiagnosed “on a disturbingly regular basis”. He examined 44 patients believed to be in a vegetative state, and found that 18 of them responded to communication. “Once someone is labelled as being without consciousness, it is very hard to get rid of that,” he told Der Spiegel. He said patients suspected of being in a non-reversible coma should be “tested 10 times” and that comas, like sleep, have different stages and need to be monitored. Houben hopes to write a book detailing his trauma and his “rebirth”.

10 Instant Ways to Get More Energy Feeling fatigued? Here are 10 simple energy solutions. 1. Go for a walk. “Less than 25 percent of my female patients get enough exercise to feel energized,” says Ann Kulze, M.D., author of Dr. Ann’s 10 Step Diet. Aim for 30 minutes of activity, five days a week.
Foods That Feed Your Muscles Your muscles are constantly working for you, so feed them well. Recent news indicates that muscle mass, especially in the lower of half of the body, is essential for good health. Muscle mass helps keep blood sugar levels even, thus fighting type 2 diabetes. Plus, muscle requires more energy to simply exist than fat, so more muscle means you burn more calories. The added strength is a bonus too. Here are five foods to put on your plate to help you maximize your muscle power. 1. Lean Cuts of Red Meat When eaten in moderation, red meat is not bad for your health. In fact, it is a great source for vitamin B12, and if you eat grass-fed beef it will provide some omega-3 fats too. Be sure to select the leaner cuts like sirloin and tenderloin to keep your intake of unhealthy saturated fats to a minimum. 2. Eggs Eggs are considered to be a high-quality protein source. Egg protein helps preserve muscle mass and provides steady and sustained energy. The study recommends eggs as a protein source for endurance athletes since eggs are high in the amino acid leucine, which helps muscles, utilize the fuel glucose.
Cigarettes are massive germ factories that may expose users and passersby to a swarm of disease-causing bacteria, a study shows. It’s well known that cigarette smoke harbors hundreds of toxic chemicals that are bad for your health. But a University of Maryland environmental health researcher says that’s not the only danger. DNA examination of four cigarette brands shows, for the first time, that cigarettes are “widely contaminated” with hundreds of different types of bacteria. In fact, there appears to be as many bacteria in cigarettes as there are chemicals.

we believe they can -- then they could possibly go on to contribute to both infectious and chronic illnesses in both smokers and individuals who are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke,” Sapkota says. Although the public health implications of these findings are unclear at present, scientists plan to continue their research to determine if the bacteria can be implicated in tobacco-related diseases. A big question is whether or not cigaretteborne bacteria can survive the burning process and enter the lungs of smokers and grow. Some evidence suggests that some bacteria can spread this way. The bacteria may also be present on, or in, the filter.
3. Quinoa Quinoa is chock-full of protein, making it a healthy carbohydrate that fills you up, provides energy, and is full of all the essential acids your muscles need to grow. This whole grain is also full of iron and potassium.
4. Cottage Cheese Cottage cheese, like other low fat dairy products, is loaded with protein, potassium, calcium, and vitamin D — all the things necessary for proper muscle function. Cottage cheese just happens to contain more protein than yogurt. To keep your fat intake down, make sure to opt for the low fat version.
acupuncture points for a quick mental boost. 5. Have a banana. Bananas provide potassium, a mineral key to converting blood sugar into energy, says ob/gyn Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom. 6. Sip green tea. It contains caffeine (a stimulant) and theanine, which calms you while leaving your mind clear. 7. Take a hike. Observing nature’s beauty can relieve energy-zapping stress. Studies suggest that workers who have views of nature have fewer stress-related symptoms.

Why do I or members of my family need to see an eye doctor? Sooner or later almost everyone will need to use eyeglasses. Vision problems are generally divided into two categories: nearsightedness (being able to see clearly only when things are close up or nearby), or farsightedness (being able to see things far away, while small nearby objects, such as printed words, appear blurred). People with nearsightedness normally need eyeglasses throughout their life. When most people reach age 40 or older, their eyes gradually become more farsighted -- a condition called presbyopia, which requires corrective glasses for reading or doing detailed work. This is a perfectly natural consequence of the aging process. Other eye conditions and diseases—including cataracts, glaucoma, astigmatism, lazy eye (amblyopia), retinal disorders, and the side effects of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease -- also require an eye doctor’s ongoing monitoring and care. Eye care professionals stress that caught early on, all these eye diseases can be treated. Without treatment, some of them can cause permanent blindness. Some adults are only motivated to see an eye doctor “when they can’t see,” says Ringo, an optometrist in Ligo Optical, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. Yet adults should have regular eye exams even if their vision is good because an exam can detect early-stage diseases –even if you’re not having symptoms. In one dramatic example, eye tests can sometimes detect brain tumors. They can also reveal eye damage due to diabetes, which is a leading cause of blindness.
- Rina

Pacquiao welcomed as a “hero” ished Philippines, the Roman Catholic Church broke with custom and allowed him to deliver a speech at a Manila church before the parade. “I live my life like every day is the last. I am proud for having attained this record,” the devout Catholic told the other churchgoers, mostly ordinary Filipinos who had waited for hours to catch a glimpse of their hero.
Despite of the latest intrigue about our “hero” linking to a sexy actress a bruised but smiling Manny Pacquiao enjoyed a hero’s welcome as he returned home to the Philippines with masses of people taking to the streets and hailing him as the best boxer of all time.

Krista breaks silence on her ‘affair’ with Pacman Inamin ni Krista na batid niya ang kumakalat na tsismis tungkol sa umano’y romantikong ugnayan niya kay Pacquiao na kasama niya sa pelikulang “Wapakman.” “Yeah, heard about it already… we’re still discussing when and how to speak” tugon ni Krista sa tanong tungkol sa umano’y relasyon nito kay Manny.

Rosalio and Dionisia Pacquiao are holding the title belts of their son Manny. Manny Pacquiao now holds three in three different weight class and three boxing organizations, the first Asian to have such a achievement.

Johnny Delgado laid to rest
And what was the answer of our bida? “No comment ako about that issue. Bahala na sila magkwento. Siguro, kaya hindi tayo umaasenso dahil pinakikialaman natin ang buhay ng iba... I-honor na lang nila ang nagawa kong achievement para sa mga Pilipino... Iwasan na muna natin kaugalian nating crab mentality.”
Veteran actor Johnny Delgado was laid to rest on 24th of November at Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina. Delgado, or Juan Marasigan Feleo, in real life was brought to his resting place after a mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Shrine in New Manila, Quezon City. Families and friends of Delgado attended the mass and paid their final respects to the actor. The 61-year-old veteran actor passed away on November 19 after a long battle with lymphoma, or cancer of the lymph nodes. Delgado is survived by his wife, director Laurice Guillen, and two daughters, actress Ina Feleo and theater actress Ana Feleo. Aside from being a great actor, Delgado was a noted actor and writer. He appeared in numerous films including “Tanging Yaman,” “Kailangan Kita,” “La Visa Loca,” and “Ligalig.” He was nominated several times in different award giving bodies. Among his acting awards were best supporting actor for “Ligalig” in 2006 and best actor for “Tanging Yaman” in 2000. The actor last appeared in Star Cinema’s “You Got Me” opposite Toni Gonzaga and Sam Milby. His recent television roles were GMA 7’s “Kamandag” and ABS-CBN’s “Maria Flordeluna” and “May Bukas Pa.”

The Kapamilya trade event in Subic Almost all Kapamilya stars traveled to Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center for the last trade event of ABS-CBN network for the year 2009. The production number of the ASAP’s full force was very successful. All the Kapamilya stars that joined the event had their chance for bonding after a long time that they haven’t met together. Early morning of November 19 the stars arrived at White Rock Beach Resort where they check in.
Tapos tinotohanan naman niya so yun.

Angelica to act as Rubi Angelica Panganiban considers it a big challenge to portray the title role in Rubi, an ABS-CBN’s offerings in 2010 which is adapted from the Mexicanovela hit. With the tagline “ang kontrabidang bida,” Angelica explained that her character lies between being a protagonist and an antagonist. Having watched some episodes of the original Mexican TV series, Angelica said that she initially got worried about the possibility that viewers might react negatively to her role, since Filipino values are different from Mexican values. Many have noted that Angelica is the perfect actress to play Rubi, noting that she effectively portrayed a role with the same nature, Scarlet de la Rhea, in the teleserye Iisa Pa lamang, which was top-billed by Claudine Barretto, Gabby Concepcion and Diether.

a + b = 3 Ltd Financial Literacy - Because money is more than adding up figures
The value of money and money values! The holiday season is getting near so let’s take a break from our business series and talk about values. Have you ever noticed how money is everywhere in our lives? So many words we use also have a money meaning: “dear” can be someone who is near to our heart, but also something expensive. We “spend” time and money. “Value” can be the principles that are important to us… and the price of something. Many of the moral values also have a money implication: take for example: trust, generosity, integrity, honesty, fairness, confidence. They all can have a money side. Can “values” help us managing our money? Yes, they can! Most of our decisions and actions imply money one way or the other. And how do we decide? We take decisions according to what seems the best to us: we think of different possibilities, gather information, think of what each decision implies (including what happens if we don’t do anything) in terms of benefit (what it brings us) and what it costs: money is one factor in our decision but not the only one. For example, you may decide to go back to your family for Christmas. How are you going to decide? First step, enquiry: can you take days off? How many? What is your family planning to do? When was the last time you saw them? How much does
(and us!) last Sunday. But well, maybe we have other stronger values than being admired. And if we had thought of what we really want to do with our money, we would not have bought theses shoes. So to really make the most of your money, and value it, take a moment to list your top five values: trust, care, generosity, integrity, openness, respect, honesty, happiness, tolerance, fairness, confidence, just to name a few. Then, have a look at all that you spend (and you earn!): if you have read this column for a long time, you know that the very first step to controlling money is to note down every dollar earned and spent: so look at your list and see if what you do with your money is consistent with your values: is it really the way you want to spend your money. Some expenses are survival (housing or food, for example). But others are not. You can re-work on your priorities, your goals and your Your inner values and beliefs impact many of your budget according to your values… and be ready to decisions … even when improve how you manyou go and buy a new age your money in 2010! pair of shoes; most of the Happy Holidays! time, when we go shopping, we don’t only buy In our next column, we’ll the item itself, but also all go back to the business that goes with it: we want series and calculate the to look more pretty, to feel second statement: the good, to be liked by our cash flow. How can you pay for it (saving, borrowing…)? Second step, you assess each possibility: going or… not going (or maybe going to your in-laws who live in another place, or to see friends, instead): what are the pros (advantages) and the cons (drawbacks)? Your list of pros and cons will include some financials (plane ticket costs, local transportation, presents, cost of a loan if you have to borrow money…) but it will also take into account other considerations: happiness to be with your family, … or stress to see them, spending Christmas alone in Hong Kong versus being in your home country, kindness to see your parents, or your mother’s duty to see your children, etc. After gathering the factual pieces of information and listing the pros and cons, you can decide more easily: or at least (there is often no ideal decision), you choose the solution which fits you best.
OFW of the MONTH Since I started working in Hong Kong I have heard so many complaints and problems of our fellow OFWs about their job because of having a stay in “Popo” (grand mother). Most of the time when I hear stories related to “Popo” problem it was hard for me to understand because I don’t have any experience with grandparents. Today, I was talking to a friend who has been working in Hong Kong for over 16 years. I was so impressed that her story is very much different from many other OFWs who have been working with a grandmother. I am then inspired to write her story and publish in this paper. Ms. Leonila Gutoman is a native of Bisao, Mt. Province but relocated to Quirino Hill, Baguio City where her family builds their house. She is married and they have 1 son studying in college. Leonila started working in Hong Kong in 1993. She has worked to few employers before she settled in her present employer. In her present employer she has been working for them for more than 10 years. Like those who have bad experiences
with their “popo”, Ms. Gutoman also said that it was not easy working with a stay in grandmother. “Nong bago palang ako sa kanila laging nagsusumbong ang lola ko sa mga amo ko kaya medyo may kaba-kaba ako sa unang taon ko sa kanila.” So according to Leonila, she multiplied her patience not only for the grandmother but most especially towards her employers. “Ginawa ko ang lahat para makuha ang kanilang tiwala. And I was successful after I have been very honest with them and every time I find cash from their pockets in my laundry I gave it back to them. With all those acts I have shown them I was able to earn their full trust. So kahit na lagi akong isinusumbong ng matanda hindi nila siya pinapansin.” After few years, Leonila also shared that she was able to earn the “Popo’s” trust because she was very watchful every time her “Popo” pay bills. “May mga times na sobra ang kanyang ibinabayad sa mga tindera kaya I watch her carefully. If it happens she is very happy. At this point mabait na siya sa akin and most of the time she listens to me more than to my employers,” Gutoman said.
Rafael is 8 years old, umiinom siya ng Chlorella Ai na best seller ng RICA International Food Supplements. His mom, Ms. Rowena Madayag has been working in Hong Kong and just like any mothers in Hong Kong dahil malayo sa pamilya worried siya sa anak na si Rafael na lagging matamlay at ayaw magaral. Subalit na confirm naman ng kanyang teacher na it was his own effort.

Bituin Ganigan, 46, Fanling N.T. Liberty M. Antazo, 59 Ate Liberty has 4 grown up sons, two of them are in Canada and she is waiting for her visa to join them. She has been working in Hong Kong for 28 years. At her age she looks younger and she feels energetic. “Kahit na pagod ako sa maghapong trabaho ay malakas pa rin ang pakiramdam ko kaya masaya ako”, she said. Three years na akong gumagamit ng RICA Royal Jelly at Omega 3 kaya siguro hindi ako madaling dapuan ng sakit, matagal na rin akong hindi nagpapaduktor. I also introduce Chlorella AI to my sister who has mayoma, dati daw sumasakit pero okay na sya pagkatapos mag RICA. “Prevention is better than cure” ika nga.
Miralona Coates,54 Tita Miralona is a chief cook in of the eatery in Hong Kong. She started her career since she arrived the territory. In the 2004, she was diagnosed to have mayoma that attracted her to use the RICA Food Supplement Chlorella AI. She heard that this Food Supplement is a very effective Body Cleanser. “Health conscious talaga ako kaya pag may narinig akong maganda na connected sa nararamdaman ko sinusubukan ko,” she said. For her you will never know the effectiveness of a medicine or food supplement if you don’t try. She used Chlorella Ai for more than a year before she decided to be operated. “Hindi na sana ako ooperahan ng doctor ko dahil after more than 1 year na gumamit ako ng RICA Chlorella Ai sinabihan ako na lumiit na ang aking mayoma at hindi ko na kailangan ma-operahan although pwede ko pa ring ipatanggal,” Miralona said. She was operated and her doctor was amazed because she was very strong and she had only 3 days healing.

“Pinoy kids in Australia retracing their roots”
As our revered national hero Jose Rizal said: “Ang hindi marunong magmahal ng sariling wika ay higit pa ang amoy sa malansang isda.” this bunch of Aussie-Pinoy kids would have made old Pepe proud. These children are gathered on Saturday morning to learn many things about Filipino. They are taught of pinoy games, stories, singing, dancing and cooking. The kids attending the class are enjoying because the school provides a lot of activities. Most of the children who enrolled were either born in Australia or have spent most of their lives in Australia and yet, they see relevance of learning the Filipino language. The students want to break down the language barrier that separates them from their countrymen.
According to census data, 50.2 per cent of the Philippines-born were resident in New South Wales, followed by 21.6 per cent in Victoria , 14.9 per cent in Queensland, and 5.2 per cent in Western Australia.

Filipinos were excluded from entering Australia under the White Australia Policy. As a consequence, their numbers in Australia remained minimal — confined to descendants of those few Filipinos who had migrated to the north west pearling areas of Western Australia and the sugar cane plantations of Queensland prior to 1901 — until the abolition of racially selective immigration policies in 1966. The 1901 census had recorded 700 Filipinos in Australia.

Martial law in the Philippines — declared in 1972 — and the renunciation of the White Australia Policy made Australia an attractive destination for Filipino emigrants, particularly skilled workers. Many Filipinas also settled in Australia from the 1970s onward as the spouses of Australian citizens. Marriages of brides born in the Philippines to long-time Australians rose very sharply from 1978, peaked in 1986, and remained high as at 2000, despite a dip in the early 1990s. The 1980s were the period of the greatest Filipino immigration, with 1987-1988 being the peak year.

KEEP THE WONDER OF CHRISTMAS This month Emma and I want to encourage you to keep the wonder of Christmas. Lose the wonder of this event and you lose its meaning. Forget the supernatural and the miraculous of Christmas and this season becomes ordinary, not worth celebrating. Regain its wonder and you will humbly and joyfully celebrate your best Christmas ever. So what is the wonder of Christmas? Some would think of “Christmas shows and decors.” Of course we miss “parols” and the Christmas lights, but not the wonder of Christmas. Others might say, “gifts and bonuses”. Being generous is a good thing, but exchange gifts, bonuses, 13th month pays are not the Christmas wonder. What about being with family? Family reunions are great, but this is not what makes Christmas a wonder to remember. The wonder of Christmas is this: God became human— what a miracle! Grudem expresses the wonder of Christmas this way: “It is by far the most amazing miracle of the entire Bible.... The fact that the infinite, omnipotent, eternal Son of God could become man and join himself to a human nature ... will remain for eternity the most profound miracle and the most profound mystery in all the universe” (Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology, Zondervan, 1994, p. 563). Let me share a few elements of wonder that we celebrate during Christmas: The first and clearly, the focal wonder of Christmas, is the
person who came. We’re used to calling him Jesus, his earthly name (Matthew 1:21), or see him as the “baby or nino in the manger”, and forget that he is more than human. He is God Himself, the eternal Son of God. The New Testament identifies Jesus as God’s Son. The Father, no less, calls him, his beloved Son (Matthew 3:17; 17:5). The “I am’s” so emphatically claimed by Jesus, all express Jesus selfidentification as God. We should also mention here that John identifies the eternal Word (John 1:1-3) to Jesus (1:14). The apostle Paul speaks of the Son as the “image of God” both in his incarnate and pre-incarnate state. Hebrews 1:3 also calls Jesus, “the radiance of God’s glory, and the exact representation of his (God’s) being.” Christmas is indeed a time of wonder: God Himself came! The second wonder that should grip our hearts this Christmas is: when the Son of God was incarnated, his deity was not abandoned, reduced, contracted, or diminished. Instead, and here’s the wonder, he acquired another nature, manhood, making him the perfect God-Man. When the Son was incarnated he truly became a human being, with a human soul and body. This is why the apostle calls Jesus, “the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). And read this: his manhood is permanent. Though now exalted, he remains to be God and man in two distinct nature, and one person forever. The writer of Hebrews points to this capacity as reason to come to God boldly

To Be a Substitute Sacrifice: Then we read that Joseph If Jesus had not been a man, “did as the angel of the Lord he could not have died in our commanded him; he took his place and paid the penalty wife, but knew her not until that was due to us (Hebrews she had borne a son; and he 2:16–17). called his name Jesus” (Matt. What is Christmas for a Filipino?
THOUGHTS FOR TODAY
shopping very seriously looking for on-sale items as gifts for family and friends. This is usually when a lot of people are on vacation so they take this chance to shop. As a preparation for the special season people also like to observe the Philippine tradition of the Simbang Gabi (Night mass). It starts on the dawn of December 16 until dawn of December 24 and the midnight takes place in the evening. After a very long way since Christmas was first celebrated, the way it has been have changed so obviously. The true spirit of the Christmas Season is not transparent, it has become more commercialized. Although gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and nonChristians, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. The economic impact of Christmas is a factor that has grown steadily over the past few centuries in many regions of the world.
