Gov’t mulls to improve social protection program amid global economic crisis By Zorayda S. Tecson MANILA, (PNA) –- The government is mulling to improve the social protection program for the marginalized sector of society as a way to mitigate the impact of the rising prices of fuel as well as the global economic uncertainties. NEDA Chief Ralph Recto said Cabinet members have agreed to expand the social protection program in the light of the global financial crisis. “Part of the recommendations is to improve social protection program for the poor. Maybe, we will need to keep it up this year or next year, if oil prices are higher than what we project for a year,” Recto said in a press briefing after the regular Cabinet meeting held at the Petron Pandacan Terminal in Pandacan, Manila Recto said NEDA will prepare the bench-
mark and hope to present in the Cabinet meeting next week. Although, the worse in the global and local economy is now over, he pointed out that recovery will take sometime or longer. And with the volatility of the crude oil prices in the world market, he said, there is a great impact on the prices of food and other basic commodities. The NEDA chief said government is concerned with the rising fuel prices which he described is expensive based on their computations. “Based on our computation, the discrepancies on the prices is too large,“ the NEDA chief said as he accused the oil companies of not being transparent in their pricing. He also said that he will meet with the Department of Energy and maybe with the oil companies on Friday to discuss on how they could craft policies that will be acceptable to all stakeholders. “It is not reconciling on the price discrepancies but looking forward what should be the policies,” he said. 50 WEDDING GUESTS SOUGHT FOR H1N1 FLU MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) is currently searching for 50 people who were guests at a wedding in Zambales two weeks ago that two Taiwan-
ese nationals infected with Influenza A(H1N1) also attended. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said they found out that the Taiwanese mother and her five-year-old daughter did not attend a yoga conference in the Philippines from May 16 to 20, contrary to early stories that came out in Taiwanese newspapers. The two patients arrived in the Philippines on May 15 and flew back to Taipei on May 20.
California, they were tight-lipped if it was the case of the dreaded virus.
Duque said the DOH is coordinating with concerned local government units to track down the guests and advised them to observe self-quarantine.
Through all this, the DOH is mulling whether or not thermal scanning is an effective tool in warding off the virus. Duque admitted he now hardly knew of any nation that uses thermal scanner to screen passengers for fever.
And while it is not yet known how the patients contracted the virus, Duque said it is likely that the mother brought it in but the DOH does not want to speculate. Duque said the virus could have been incubating when the mother and her daughter arrived in the Philippines and the signs came out only upon their return home. Based on the reports of Taiwan health authorities, the mother had manifested A (H1N1) on May 21. Eventually, her daughter had also fallen ill. Duque, however reported that the country’s first two confirmed cases of A (H1N1) are “both well and do not have any symptoms.” “They are still being monitored and will be discharged once their repeat polymerase chain reaction tests becomes negative for A (H1N1). At present, all their close contacts have not reported any symptoms of flu and are observing home quarantine,” he added. The country’s first case was a 10-year-old Filipino girl who acquired the virus after traveling to the United States and Canada, while the second case was a 50-year-old Filipina balikbayan from the US. Since May 1, the DOH has monitored 111 travelers who manifested symptoms after visiting A (H1N1)-affected countries. Of this figures, 15 cases still have pending laboratory results. “Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a total of 12,022 cases and still 86 deaths in 43 countries as of May 24. There are no new countries reporting confirmed cases of A (H1N1),” Duque maintained.
Immediately, news about the child being observed at the said hospital has caused panic among residents as SMS messages have not stopped spreading. Thermal scanning, a thing of the past?
“It’s useless now. I’ve been to World Health Organization (WHO) office in Geneva, they are not using thermal scanning, no one was giving out alert notice or health declaration notice. It was the same in the biggest airport hub in Amsterdam,” he said. The DOH, Duque claimed, is thinking of shifting to other strategy like “health alert” or massive information drive to prevent the virus from coming in. “We’ll talk about it because we might need to shift out resources to more effective strategy. The case fatality rate of A (H1N1) worldwide is very low – less than one percent. That means for every 1,000 affected individuals, 0.1 dies. And these are the ones who have co-morbidity or other illnesses like diabetes and hypertension. Those who are immuno-compromised of weak body resistance,” he added. The department is planning to coordinate with the Department of Foreign Affairs to check how precautionary measures against the disease is being implemented among American soldiers who are in the country for the Balikatan exercises. “But I think there were already preliminary talks about how this issue should be addressed,” he maintained. Travel advisory Meanwhile, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom issued separate travel advisories urging their nationals in the Philippines to exercise high degree of caution, citing confirmed cases of A(H1N1) in the country and threat of terrorist attack and serious crime. The three countries’ travel advice have been reviewed and reissued, this time containing new information about the dreaded virus, but the overall level of the advice has not changed.
Panic in Baguio
Australia strongly recommended its citizens to take out comprehensive travel insurance that will cover any overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation, before they depart.
In Baguio City, a child suspected of being infected by the deadly virus is carefully monitored at the Pines City Doctors Hospital.
The also have to confirm that the insurance covers the whole time they will be away and check what circumstances and activities are not included in the policy.
The DOH-Center for Health Development in the Cordillera said physicians will find out within eight hours if the child, who has shown symptoms of the virus, is indeed positive from the flu disease.
The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has confirmed cases of avian influenza in birds in a number of countries throughout the world, including some in Southeast Asia.
Dr. Nicholas Gordo of the DOH-CAR claimed they already brought laboratory samples from the child to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in (RITM) Manila for confirmation. Although officials at the Pines City Doctors Hospital have confirmed that they admitted a child from

THE INTELLIGENT READER’S CHOICE
The Department of Health and Ageing advises Australians who reside in the Philippines for an extended period to consider, as a precautionary measure, having access to influenza antiviral medicine for treatment. Long-term residents are at a greater risk of exposure to avian influenza over time and should seek medical advice before taking antiviral medicines. Australians intending to travel to the Philippines for shorter periods are at much lower risk of infection but should discuss the risk of avian influenza with their
doctor as part of their routine pre-travel health checks. If the avian influenza virus mutates to a form where efficient human-to-human transmission occurs, it may spread quickly and local authorities could move quickly to impose restrictions on travel. The British travel advisory said their citizens in the Philippines should check updates on the number of cases and their locations through the WHO website with dedicated Swine Flu page. UK maintained the advisory against all travel to Southwest Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago because of ongoing terrorist and insurgent activity. Canada’s level of travel warning in the Philippines has not changed but the advisory informed their nationals on the screening measures for the A(H1N1) outbreak. – With Artemio Dumlao, Pia Lee-Brago - By Sheila Crisostomo (Philstar News Service, www.philstar. com)
Classes to open despite flu scare MANILA, Philippines - There will be no postponement of the school opening on June 1 despite the A(H1N1) influenza virus scare and other concerns such as the lack of school facilities. Malacañang assured the public yesterday that measures are in place to ensure a smooth and orderly resumption of classes. Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the country remains free from the deadly virus. Health and quarantine authorities have been working overtime, he said, to prevent an outbreak of the flu that has killed over 70 people around the world. “There is no reason to postpone the opening of classes because of the AH1N1 virus,” Remonde told the governmentowned radio station dzRB. “We are better prepared this year than in previous years because at this time, we can say the investments poured in by the President on the education sector is bearing fruit, especially on public education, since 2001,” he said. He said records would show that “no other president in contemporary history has spent as much for education than President Arroyo.” He, however, admitted that despite the billions of pesos poured into the public education system, there is still a shortage of school buildings, textbooks, and teachers. Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said the government would only postpone the school opening if advised by the Depart-
ment of Health. He said the government is currently working on helping students avail themselves of vaccination to prevent them from catching the virus. Lapus said the Department of Education’s regional, division, and other offices have been directed to ensure that school children and their parents are properly educated on the AH1N1 virus. Not compulsory Lapus, meanwhile, warned school heads yesterday against forcing students to join “Brigada Eskwela” or the National Schools Maintenance Week on May 18 to 22. “The Department of Education is looking into complaints that some school heads are requiring their students to clean the schools during Brigada Eskwela. Students are welcome to help their parents but their participation should not be used as prerequisite for enrolment,” he said. Lapus has ordered the conduct of Brigada Eskwela mandatory for all public schools. The activity is aimed at unifying the community in making public schools conducive for learning and perfect venues for putting into practice the bayanihan spirit, which Filipinos are famous for. “The purpose of the DepEd order mandating all public schools to conduct ‘Brigada Eskwela’ is to generate greater support from all sectors of society. DepEd welcomes any form of assistance that is freely given, and our students should not be coerced to participate in ‘Brigada Eskwela’ just for the sake of generating a high volunteer turnout,” said Lapus. The Brigada Eskwela collaterals to be used in public schools are not for sale, and students and parents are not required to pay any amount to participate. Lapus urged parents and students to report to the department any complaints related to the illegal conduct of Brigada Eskwela. “‘Brigada Eskwela’ teaches sincere community effort to prepare our public schools for school opening, and to give our public school children a learning environment that they rightfully deserve. DepEd urges school heads to look for volunteers for ‘Brigada Eskwela,’ but should not coerce anyone to participate or pay any amount,” he said. Volunteers for ‘Brigada Eskwela’ can help public schools in certain tasks such as welding broken fences, fixing leaking roofs, cleaning clogged drainages which are potential breeding grounds of mosquitoes, replacing busted lighting fixtures and switches, repainting old walls and ceilings, cleaning school grounds and sprucing up school gardens. Brigada Eskwela is part of DepEd’s annual “Oplan Balik Eskwela,” which aims to prepare public schools for the opening of classes.

GMA richer by P44.9 million
Vice President Noli de Castro also grew richer, by more than P3.8 million in 2008 based on his sworn SALN filed with the Ombudsman.
MANILA, Philippines – President Arroyo has more than doubled her wealth since she replaced deposed President Joseph Estrada in 2001. Mrs. Arroyo’s latest sworn statement of assets and liabilities and net worth (SALN) filed with the Office of the Ombudsman on April 30 showed her P44.9 million richer than in the previous year. Her total declared assets in 2008 stood at P177.179 million but her liabilities in the form of net payables amounted to P33 million, leaving her with P144.539 million. In 2007, the President’s SALN showed her total assets at P99.616 million, or P11 million higher than in 2006. When she assumed the presidency in 2001, her declared net worth was only P66.747 million. As president, her annual salary is P693,000. Her shares of stocks, declared under the category of personal and other properties, stood at P110.437 million last year. Mrs. Arroyo declared only six real properties in 2008 as against seven in 2007, including a house and lot in Baguio worth more than P67 million with cost of improvement at P645,287; a residential lot in Antipolo worth P1.7 million; a commercial lot in Tayabas, Quezon worth P2.4 million; an agricultural lot in Nasugbu, Batangas, P1.5 million; raw land in Coron, Palawan which she bought in 2005 for more than P2 million; and a fish pond in Malolos, Bulacan purchased in 2007 for P507,800. Her declared real properties last year amounted to more than P5 million as against the P6.8 million reported the previous year, during which she declared ownership of another agricultural land in San Rafael, Bulacan.
The broadcast journalist-turned-politician declared his total assets at P60.902 million and liabilities at P2.5 million. De Castro, who receives a monthly salary of P46,200, declared ownership of five houses and lots and three lots worth more than P29 million. The properties include a house and lot in Lagro, Novaliches, Quezon City worth P40,000 with an improvement cost of P200,000; a house and lot in Tierra Pura Homes, Tandang Sora, Quezon City worth P3.5 million; houses and lots in Pasong Tamo, Quezon City worth P1.4 million and P7.7 million; and a house and lot in San Antonio Heights, Batangas worth P695,000. De Castro also declared ownership of lots in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan worth P2.7 million; a lot in Mindoro, P300,000; and a lot in Forrest Hills, Antipolo, P3.8 million. He also declared ownership of several pieces of jewelry worth more than P2 million; appliances and furniture, P2.060 million; paintings and other artworks, P480,000; three vehicles – a Suburvan, a Ford Expedition and a Chrysler – worth P8.4 million; shares of stocks in ABS-CBN worth P1 million; and P17.5 million bank deposit. His SALN report in 2008 also showed five more relatives joining the government namely Marives de Castro, his niecein-law who is a municipal officer of the Department of Agrarian Reform in Oriental Mindoro; Perla Lauterio-Barcelon, his cousin who is clerk at the Department of Public Works and Highways also in
For 2007, Mrs. Arroyo’s SALN declared “no business interests and financial connections” but for 2008, she identified La Vista Investments and Holdings Inc. as a business interest run by her husband, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo. La Vista holds office on the 8th Floor of LTA Building in Legaspi Village, Makati City. As required by law, the President listed the names of six relatives who are also in government. They were led by her two congressmen-sons Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel M. Arroyo and Camarines Sur Rep. Diosdado M. Arroyo who, based on their own SALNs released by the House of Representatives in May 2008, are among the richest congressmen with net worth of P96.7 million and P83.7 million, respectively. Her brother-in-law Ignacio T. Arroyo Jr., the richest among Arroyo relatives in Congress with a reported net worth of P145.8 million, was third on her list. The President identified the rest as Ma. Lourdes T. Arroyo, her sisterin-law working at the House of Representatives; Erlina M.B. de Leon, a cousin working at Malacañang; and Carlos L. de Leon, a cousin-inlaw connected with the Office of the President. BOC awaits DOH study of toxic school supplies MANILA, Philippines -- Alarmed by the reported poisonous chemicals found in some school materials, the Bureau of Customs (BoC) said on Monday it would seek guidance from concerned agencies regarding the importation of school supplies made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Fernandino Tuason, chief of BoC’s Intelligence Division, said they would have to wait for the “official determination” from the Department of Health (DOH) and the Bureau of Product Standards before they could hold shipments of PVC products used by schoolchildren. Tuason said they had yet to receive any alert or advisory from the government about the sup-

posed presence of phthalates, a toxic substance used as softening agent for plastics, in PVC products like clear plastic covers, binders and bags. The environmentalist group EcoWaste Coalition had called on parents and teachers to avoid buying and using products made from PVC plastics as it might affect the health of children. The DOH issued an alert order before the BoC confiscated imported toys containing lead and phthalates, Tuason noted. “Definitely, any products containing toxic [components] will not be allowed to enter [the country],” he told reporters in an interview. He said they would also send a letter to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as well as to the EcoWaste group to ask for their comments on the matter. “We would like to know who are the experts who can confirm that school supplies made of PVC plastics contain toxins,” he added. He then urged EcoWaste to provide the specific kinds and brands of the products allegedly containing phthalates and its registered importers and distributors. In addition, Tuason said it was important to know the country of origin of imported school products, most of which came from China, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The Customs official, however, admitted that it would be too late to run after the importers as they usually brought in shipments of school supplies as early as January in time for the opening of classes in June.
Migrants group condemns OWWA’s callousness on pleading OFW family As the family of Emy Pepito prepared to meet his repatriated remains, Migrante International lashed out at the OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administrations) for not delivering any its much hyped services to the distressed family. The family, together with the officers of Migrante International, trooped to the office of OWWA administrator Carmelita Dimzon to demand for the funeral and burial assistance so that they will be able to claim the remains of Pepito which will arrive at the NAIA 1 airport by 1:00 pm, May 25, 2009. “When will the agony for the Pepito family end? When will this government live true to its oath of protecting our OFWs? First, they had to pressure the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) to act so Emy’s remains can be repatriated. They waited six months for the repatriation. But they still cannot pay their last respects to their loved one as OWWA refuses to give any burial assistance to the family,” lamented Garry Martinez, chairperson of Migrante International. Martinez asserts that Pepito is a documented OFW who paid all the necessary exactions required by the government thus must be fully accorded services sue any paying member. This includes funeral and burial assistance from OWWA. Emy Pepito, 29 years old, who hails from Osamiz City, went to work as a construction worker in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2006. His dreams in working abroad abruptly ended on a tragic note when he was buried alive in sand mixed with boiling asphalt while he was working on the foundation of a building. The incident happened last November 12, 2008. “After being stored at the morgue in Saudi Arabia for six months, we are afraid that the remains of Pepito will lie rotting at the Pair Pags in NAIA if the OWWA will continue to deny Pepito’s family the assistance that is due them.” Martinez exclaimed. “This is another proof of how neglected OFWs’ or their families’ welfare are under this government. But, when it comes to collecting fees from OFWs, OWWA is well- known to be very efficient. It is when they are collecting fees that OFWs are bagong bayanis but when they need help, OWWA seems to be deliberately slow when it comes to providing assistance,” said Garry Martinez, “Intensifying its labor export policy as government’s response to crisis will certainly lead to more cases such as that of Pepito’s.” Aside from Emy Pepito, Migrante also cited the cases of Eduardo Reyes who died in Riyadh last March 6, 2009 and Marilou Macam who died last November 23, 2008, in Jeddah whose families, up until now, continue to demand for the repatriation of the remains of their loved ones. Scientists identify gene that may explain hair loss
47M-YearOld Fossil Evolutionary ‘Aunt’ to Humans Scientists have discovered the oldest intact primate fossil on record, ABC News reports. Nicknamed “Ida,” the 47-million-year-old lemur-like creature had opposable thumbs, fingernails instead of claws, and legs that could have evolved to walk upright. Scientists don’t think Ida is a direct ancestor of humans, though. “We are not dealing with our grand, grand grandmother,” one said, “but perhaps with our grand, grand, grand aunt.” The producer of a documentary accompanying the announcement described the find with more florid language. “In this time of economic hardship,” he said, “it is nice to turn to another time, 47 million years ago, to the story of a little girl, who possibly connects to us.” The fossil was discovered in Germany in 1983, but it wasn’t until the scientists examined it 2 years ago that its true significance became clear.
Elizabeth Adeney Pregnant at 66 Submitted by hareyan on May 18th, 2009 EmaxHealth Elizabeth Adeney, a woman defying the mother nature is pregnant at 66 years of age and expects to give birth in June. The 66 years old woman has conceived with vitro at a fertility clinic in Ukraine because according to NY Post “British clinics do not treat women over 50. “ Her pregnancy at 66 years of age has arisen many ethical questions including how old is too old to be pregnant. Now Elizabeth Adeney has ignited a firing debate on pregnancy and IVF therapy. A wealthy and divorced Adeney is now set to be UK’s oldest pregnant woman to give birth to a child at 66. She is expected to give birth in June through a C-section. “I’m shocked by the idea of a 66-year-old woman giving birth,” professor Severino Antinori, Britain’s top medical expert on helping older women bear children told The Sunday Times of London. “I respect the choice medically, but I think anything over 63 is risky, because you cannot guarantee the child will have a loving mother or family.” He said he feared the child would end up suffering from the lack of a parent. If the parent is pregnant at 66 years may God give her long life so the child grows up enjoying the love of a mother. “It is possible to give a child to the mother up to the age of 83, but it is medically criminal to do this,” he said, “because the likelihood is that, after a year or two, the child will lose his mum and suffer from psychological problems.”

Household drill saves boy’s life A doctor in Australia used a household drill to bore into a boy’s skull and drain it of blood clots as his local hospital lacked the required tools. Dr Rob Carson performed the procedure on Nicholas Rossi, 13, after the boy fell off his bike and hit his head. The doctor had never attempted the surgery before, and had to be talked through the operation by a Melbourne neurosurgeon. The boy’s father said the doctor’s improvisation had saved his son’s life. But Dr Carson told reporters: “It’s not a personal achievement; it is just a part of the job.” Immediately after his fall, Nicholas Rossi appeared stable. But his mother, a nurse, noticed a bump on his head and decided to take him to the local hospital. By the time he got there, he was slipping in and out of consciousness.
“The mice started to lose their fur from postnatal day 11, beginning at the head and progressing toward the tail region of the back,” they wrote.
“Dr Carson came over to us and said, ‘I am going to have to drill into [Nicholas] to relieve the pressure on the brain - we’ve got one shot at this and one shot only,”’ the boy’s father, Michael Rossi told journalists. The small hospital had no special tools, so the team had to use a household drill. Dr Carson called the neurosurgeon who talked him through the procedure by telling him where to aim the drill and how deep to go. “All of a sudden the emergency ward was turned into an operating theatre,” Michael Rossi told Fairfax Radio. “We didn’t see anything, but we heard the noises, heard the drill. It was just one of those surreal experiences.” Dr David Tynan, an anesthetist who helped Dr Carson, said the procedure took about a minute. “It was pretty scary,” he told ABC. “You obviously worry, [are] you pushing hard enough or pushing too hard, but then when some blood came out after we’d gone through the skull, we realized we’d made the right decision.”
On April 24, 2009 two (2) two countries were affected of the swine flu with 25 people confirmed cases. As of May 26, 2009 the number of countries with confirmed cases is 46, the number of confirmed cases are 12,954 and the number of deaths (out of number of confirmed cases) are 92.
Hong Kong confirms seventh case of swine flu HONG KONG - Hong Kong has confirmed that a 21-year-old Hong Kong citizen who returned from studies in the U.S. has swine flu. It is the territory’s seventh case of the virus. The Center for Health Protection announced Sunday that the woman arrived in Hong Kong from Atlanta, Georgia, by plane late Saturday after a stopover in South Korea. Two other swine flu cases were announced Saturday, both travelers who flew from the U.S. All three patients are in stable condition. The Hong Kong government has urged parents to ask any children studying abroad to delay returning home if they develop fever or other flu symptoms.
Scientists believe they have found what triggers many children with eczema to go on to develop asthma. The Public Library of Science Biology study points to a way to stop what is known as the “atopic march”. The US team at the Washington University School of Medicine showed that a substance made by the damaged skin triggered asthma symptoms in mice. The same substance, thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), is also produced in the lungs of asthma patients. Early treatment of the skin rash and blocking TSLP production might stop asthma developing in young patients with eczema, they hope.
They did more experiments and found that even mice with normal skin but bred to overproduce TSLP also developed asthma-like symptoms, suggesting TSLP is indeed the culprit. Lead researcher Dr Raphael Kopan said: “We are excited because we’ve narrowed down the problem of atopic march to one molecule. “We’ve shown that the skin can act as a signalling organ and drive allergic inflammation in the lung by releasing TSLP. “Now it will be important to address how to prevent defective skin from producing TSLP. If that can be done, the link between eczema and asthma could be broken.” Dr Elaine Vickers of Asthma UK said: “This is the first piece of research to suggest that the natural protein TSLP could play a direct role in causing people with eczema to develop asthma.
“These results were obtained from studies with mice, so it is important to establish Drugs that act on TSLP might also protect against asthma de- whether the same causal link exists in humans. velopment even in cases that are not linked to eczema. “Scientists are already exploring the potential of targeting Atopic march TSLP to create new treatAllergies and asthma often ments for eczema, asthma occur together. Indy mystery: Why do Indianapolis 500 winners drink milk?
The U.S., more than 100 years into its industrial revolution, has only begun to crack down on mercury
By Chris Chase After crossing the bricked finish line on Sunday, the winner of the Indianapolis 500 will drive into the winner’s circle, be presented with a celebratory wreath and take a swig from a cold bottle of milk. The latter is one of the grandest traditions in sports, but also one of the most confusing. Why milk? Why is it in a bottle? And (this one was actually asked by a girl I knew in college) has it been sitting in the sun all day? After solving mysteries in Beijing, Boston and Augusta, GA, the old Y! Sports investigative unit is here to answer all your questions in order to solve the mystery of the milk-drinking drivers. It all started in 1933. After Louis Meyer won his second Indianapolis 500, he requested a cold bottle of buttermilk to
quench his thirst. The Yonkers, NY native had grown up drinking the beverage and favored it throughout his racing days. Three years later, Meyer won his third title and, again, he requested a cold glass of buttermilk to celebrate. This time, a newspaper photographer snapped a photo of Meyer taking a swig from the bottle while holding up three fingers, one to represent each of his Indy victories. The shot would appear the next day in a number of newspapers. As legend has it, a local dairy executive saw the photo and, realizing a great marketing opportunity, vowed that milk
CLIMATE CHANGING ISSUE A mountain pine beetle is pictured in this undated handout photo. The towering pine trees of British Columbia’s rugged Caribou Region are paying with their lives for five consecutive winters that have not been cold enough to kill a tiny predator. Thousands of trees are infested with mountain pine beetles in an exploding infestation that threatens to destroy more than C$4 billion ($2.6 billion) in timber in an area dependent on the forestry industry. Tree-munching beetles, malaria-carrying mosquitoes and deer ticks that spread Lyme disease are three living signs that climate change is likely to exact a heavy toll on human health. The small town of Ilulissat in Greenland is seen in this photo taken August 16, 2007. New York, Boston and other cities on North America’s northeast coast could face a rise in sea level this century that would exceed forecasts for the rest of the planet if Greenland’s ice sheet keeps melting as fast as it is now, researchers said May 27, 2009. Sea levels off the northeast coast of North America could rise by 12 to 20 inches more than other coastal areas if the Greenland glaciermelt continues to accelerate at its present pace, the researchers reported.
would be given to the winner the following year. (They had thought Meyer was drinking regular milk, not buttermilk.) Except for a stretch from 1947 to 1955, milk has been presented at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ever since. Today, instead of buttermilk, the winner is given a choice between whole milk, two percent and skim. Those bottles are held in a cooler by two selected Southern Indiana dairy farmers and are etched with the words “Indianapolis 500 winner,” making the bottles not just a beverage receptacle but a trophy in their own right. The drivers seem to like the milk, not just for what it represents, but because of its taste as well. Dario Franchitti said in 2007 that the milk is: “Good. Really good. They chill it and it’s very cold. I went for full fat inside and then I went outside in Victory Circle after the rain stopped and I had another bottle and I think that was 2%. That was good as well. I was liking the milk.” Personally, I can’t imagine that milk is the ideal beverage to consume immediately after finishing a grueling threehour race run at 200 mph in cramped, often-sweltering conditions. But for the racers at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon, no drink would be finer. Thanks to the Indiana Dairy Council for helping solve this mystery. We’ll be raising a tall glass of skim in their honor this Sunday.
pollution from coal-fired power plants. The Bush Administration enacted the first-ever mercury control limits on coal-fired power plants, but they were struck down in court because they would have allowed local pollution levels around some plants to increase; many states have enacted their own regulations in the meantime. After years of delay under the Bush Administration, the EPA has also recently announced plans to regulate mercury emissions from another major source: cement plants.
coal-fired power plants (coal has trace amounts of mercury), cement kilns (which burn coal, and use limestone, both of which can contain mercury) and certain types of mining (gold mining uses mercury to process the rock). Mercury has been used to make a variety of manufactured goods, from compact fluorescent light bulbs to thermostats.

Smart uses for vinegar By Brian Clark Howard Now that you know ketchup can be used for shining copper and repairing hair, or that vodka can be used to repel insects and freshen laundry, you may have been wondering what tasks you can get done for cheap with other household items. Since May is National Vinegar Month (did you forget?), we thought we’d take a closer look at this inexpensive, versatile good. According to the Vinegar Institute, the useful stuff was probably discovered by accident (most wine drinkers know what happens when you leave a bottle sitting around too long). In fact the word vinegar comes from a French translation for “sour wine.” Over the centuries vinegar has been produced from many stocks, including molasses, dates, sorghum, fruits, coconut, honey, beer, maple syrup, potatoes, beets, grains, and more. But the principle is the same: You get acetic acid (a.k.a. vinegar) after first fermenting natural sugars to alcohol, and then fermenting again. As Michael de Jong, The Daily Green’s Zen Cleaner and author of the Clean series of books, points out, vinegar has been pressed into service for many uses over the centuries. It has been prized as a foodstuff, condiment, preservative, and natural remedy. What’s so great about vinegar? Besides being effective, vinegar is cheap and widely available. It is nontoxic and lasts for a very long time without losing strength. It does not pollute land, air, or water, and it doesn’t combust. It’s much safer to have
You are what you eat (but also what it was packaged in) By Dan Shapley The green food movement, at its most basic level, boils down to this old adage: “You are what you eat.” That’s why so many people avoid foods with pesticide residue, foods that were grown with fertilizers derived from fossil fuels, foods derived from genetically modified seeds or genes, milk or meat from animals pumped up with hormones or antibiotics.... While we can look for a “USDA Organic” and other reputable labels to find those foods grown to our standards, now it seems we should also consider the packaging that bears the label. A new study published in Environmental Science and Technology suggests there’s more to avoiding packaging than avoiding waste. The chemicals in food packaging -- specifically papers treated to resist grease -- are being found in human blood, suggesting that those chemicals are leaching from the packaging to the food, and then to us. You are what you eat, yes. You are also what that food was packaged in. And that means your blood runs thick with perfluorochemicals, according to the University of Toronto study. (“Thick” is a deliberate overstatement, given that the chemicals are measured at a scale of parts per billion, but when it comes to chemical exposure, that’s the scale that health experts often worry about.)

There are a number of great superfoods rich in potassium (way beyond bananas). Some folks have also suggested trying this remedy: Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of honey, and a cup of hot water. Then drink before bed. Yummy! Break bad bonds Having trouble getting that annoying sticky label residue off a product? Or accidentally glue something together? Vinegar can be used as a solvent to dissolve many common adhesives. problems, including infertility in women, and to liver, immune system, developmental and reproductive problems in lab animals. In addition to food packaging, the chemicals are used to make breathable clothing, nonstick cookware, upholstery, carpets and many personal care products. PFOS is being phased out in the U.S. by its main manufacturer, 3M, and it is being considered for worldwide ban by the United Nations. PFOA, also known as C8, was developed by 3M and then manufactured by Dupont. The Environmental Protection Agency has asked U.S. companies to voluntarily stop using the chemical by 2015. Both chemicals are long-lived in the environment, and have been found widely throughout nature, including in high concentrations in Arctic wildlife, far from sources of industrial pollution. There appears to be no plans to phase out diPAPs from food packaging, however, so people will likely be exposed to both chemicals as diPAPs break down in the human body. 5 Tips for Avoiding Packaging Avoiding packaging helps you reduce waste. It’s one of the best things you can do to green your diet. When it comes to grease-resistant paper packaging, it also may be an important part of protecting your health. Eat real foods: Real foods -- fruits and vegetables, whole-grain bread, rice, etc. -- typically aren’t heavily packaged, or processed.

or in your flower bed. According to HomeEnvy, a simple solution is to pour vinegar around the edges of the area you want to protect every few months. Wash produce According to the green team at Ideal Bite, vinegar can help remove bacteria and pesticide residues from fruits and veggies. Mix three parts water to one part white vinegar, and dispense in a spray bottle. Then rinse with water. The site claims this wash kills 98% of bacteria on produce. Clean windows Instead of spending money on window cleaning chemicals -- especially ones that include toxic or potentially toxic chemicals -- make your own! Mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with a gallon of water, and dispense into a used spray bottle. Squirt on, then scrub with newspaper, not paper towels, which cause streaking. Get spring-fresh laundry Got grass stains? No problemo, says Michael de Jong. Make a mixture of one-third cup white vinegar and two-thirds cup water. Apply the solution to the stain and blot with a clean cloth. Repeat this process until you’ve removed as much green as possible, and then launder as usual. When your big washing day comes around, toss in a capful of white vinegar. Your colors will come out bolder and your whites whiter. If you’ve recently had an encounter with a skunk, it will take more than a capful. After washing, get a sharper crease in pants by dipping the cloth in a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water. Then wring out the cloth and press the creases. Now you look like Dilbert! Clean carpets According to this The Daily Green community member: “Spots in carpets often remove with a simple dilution of one part vinegar, onesixteenth part lemon juice, and eight parts distilled water.”
Cola ‘is bad’ for women’s bones Women who regularly drink cola could be increasing their risk of osteoporosis, US researchers believe. Their study of 2,500 people revealed drinking cola was linked with low bone mineral density in women regardless of their age or calcium intake. But the work published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found no such link in men. Over a million UK women have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, although many more may have the condition. Osteoporosis literally means “porous bones” and makes it more likely for them to fracture as they lose their density. Professor Katherine Tucker, director of the Epidemiology and Dietary Assessment Program at Tufts University in Boston, and colleagues compared information from dietary questionnaires with bone mineral density measurements at the spine and three different hip sites. Men reported drinking an average of five cola drinks a week, and women reported consuming four cola drinks a week. Cola consumption was linked to lower bone mineral density in all three hip sites in women, although not in the spine, but was not associated with bone mineral density in men. There was no association with bone mineral density loss for women with other carbonated drinks, however. Past work suggests that consumption of cola may be detrimental to bone health because it replaces milk in the diet, but in the current study the women who drank higher amounts of cola did not drink less milk than others. However, calcium intake from all sources, including non-dairy sources such as dark leafy greens or beans, was lower for women who drank the most cola.
Antiaging benefits of Arginine, Glutamine and Ornithine
Bio-Young Arginine Plus, an exclusive
proprietary blend of 3 freeformamino acids viz. L-Arginine, L- Glutamine and L-Ornithine, helps to improve blood circulation, enhance the function of body cells, and delay aging. Arginine is the body’s chief source for the production of Nitric Oxide. As we age Nitric Oxide production in our body decreases. Arginine supplements have been scientifically proven to increase the production of Nitric Oxide.
Importance of Nitric Oxide
Nitric Oxide plays a very important role as a chemical messenger in the body. It is involved inpractically all cellular responses and influences the functioning of virtually every organ in the body including the lungs, liver, brain, heart, kidneys and stomach. Nitric Oxide is so important that without it human life would be impossible. One of the key functions of Nitric Oxide is relaxation of blood vessels. This results in dilatation of the blood vessels with lowering of blood pressure and enhanced blood flow to vital organs.
The amino acids Arginine, Glutamine and Ornithine are well-known HGH (human growth hormone) releasers. When used in combination they act synergistically to stimulate the pituitary gland to release more HGH. Many clinical studies have shown that increasing HGH reverses aging.
Effects of individual amino acids
Each amino acid has its own functions also. Below is a summary of their health benefits.
* Increases energy levels * Prevents aging * Strengthens immune system * Helps control blood sugar * Promotes wound healing * Builds muscles * Lowers cholesterol levels * Detoxifies the liver * Improves sexual performance * Improves sperm count and motility * Improves memory

‘Wake Up’ To Health Risks Of Heavy Snoring Heavy snoring can be far from a nuisance. It can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition where an individual briefly stops breathing during the night which raises the risk of heart failure and strokes. “Sleep apnea or sleep disordered breathing is one that we’re getting more and more interested in because we see a very strong association with strokes, heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems,” says Melvyn Rubenfire, M.D., director of Preventative Cardiology at the University of Michigan Health System’s Cardiovascular Center. The cardiovascular risk factors that most often come to mind are smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and family history. But it’s important to be aware of the possible health risks of heavy snoring. Snoring is caused by a blockage in the back of the throat. What you hear is the tongue forced to the back of the throat when a person is lying on their back. When people snore they don’t always stop breathing, but there are chemicals in the brain that should trigger breathing that are not stimulated when a person snores. Without the stimulation the person will often stop breathing. When a person obstructs at night and stops breathing, oxygen levels drop dramatically and hormones and adrenaline surge. Those hormones contribute to high blood pressure, irregularities of the heart and can trigger heart attacks People who snore do not necessarily have obstructive sleep apnea but the relationship is pretty strong.
And the relationship between snoring and cardiovascular problems goes both ways. Those with heart problems are more likely to have sleeping disorders. For example, heart failure can lead to water retention – water buildup in legs, lungs and tissues in the back of the throat. “So heart failure can be one of the causes of obstructive sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea can seriously worsen heart function and aggravate heart failure,” Rubenfire said. Studies had long suggested a connection between snoring and cardiovascular problems but men made up most of the study group. According to a large study published in the February 2000 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, women who snore regularly have about twice the risk of heart attacks and strokes than women who never snore. “Still it may be too early to tell if snoring is an independent risk factor for heart disease,” says Rubenfire who continues to review research on sleep disordered breathing as it relates to cardiovascular disease. “What we do know is if you treat people with obstructive sleep apnea the risk of cardiovascular disease improves dramatically.” Rubenfire explains that anyone who snores loudly, wakes without feeling rested or has hypertension, diabetes or is overweight is more prone to sleep disordered breathing or obstructive sleep apnea. The most important step in treating snoring is recognition and appropriate diagnosis. A very effective treatment – one that helps 90 percent of those who are compliant with the method – is using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device. “These are excellent devices, called CPAP, … these are masks that prevent you from obstructing by creating some pressure,” says Rubenfire. “Simple snoring that’s not very loud and without any other symptoms can usually be handled simply by turning on your side.”

Too much cola zaps muscle power Excessive cola consumption can lead to anything from mild weakness to profound muscle paralysis, doctors are warning. This is because the drink can cause blood potassium to drop dangerously low, they report in the International Journal of Clinical Practice. They tell of the curious case of an Australian ostrich farmer who needed emergency care for lung paralysis after drinking 4-10 liters of cola a day. He made a full recovery and was advised to curtail his cola drinking. Another example included a pregnant woman who regularly consumed up to three liters a day for the last six years and complained of tiredness, appetite loss and persistent vomiting. A heart trace revealed she had an irregular heartbeat, most likely caused by her low blood potassium levels. Once she stopped drinking so much cola, she made a full and uneventful recovery. The investigators believe these cases are not atypical and that many people risk problems due to their intake. Manufacturers insist the products are safe when consumed in moderation. In a commentary, Dr Clifford Packer from the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Centre in Ohio said: “We have every reason to think that it is not rare. “With aggressive mass marketing, super-sizing of soft drinks, and the effects of caffeine tolerance and dependence, there is very little doubt that tens of millions of people in industrialized countries drink at least 2-3 l of cola per day. “It follows that the serum potassium levels of these heavy cola drinkers are dropping, in some cases, to dangerous low levels.” Moderation The author of the research paper, Dr Moses Elisaf from the University of Ioannina in Greece, said it appeared that hypocalcaemia can be caused by exces-
healthy living sive consumption of three of the most common ingredients in cola drinks - glucose, fructose and caffeine. “The individual role of each of these ingredients in the patho physiology of cola-induced hypocalcaemia has not been determined and may vary in different patients. “However in most of the cases we looked at for our review, caffeine intoxication was thought to play the most important role. “This has been borne out by case studies that focus on other products that contain high levels of caffeine but no glucose or fructose.” Despite this, he warned that caffeine free cola products could also cause hypocalcaemia because the fructose they contain can cause diarrhea. “We believe that further studies are needed to establish how much is too much when
it comes to the daily consumption of cola drinks.” Excessive consumption has already been linked with obesity, diabetes and tooth and bone problems. A spokeswoman from the British Soft Drinks Association said: “The examples used in this paper by the IJCP are all very extreme cases - moderate consumption of cola drinks is completely safe and people can continue to enjoy such drinks as part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle. “The soft drinks industry is committed to encouraging responsible consumption of all its products. Nutrition labeling is included on pack so people can make an informed choice about the products they are drinking.” Source: BBC News

The bill, of which Abante, Revilla’s counterpart in the House, is principal author, seeks to punish the production, publication, distribution, sale, or exhibition of obscene and pornographic materials, and the exhibition of live sexual acts. It’s her side of her story and we have to give Dr. Kho due process,” Mamalo said. He said the PRC legal division has recorded hundreds of complaints involving sex scandals among licensed professionals, including doctors. “We have hundreds of sex scandal cases but if ever this will be first sex video case,” Mamalo said. Dr. Minguita Padilla, chairman of the Opinion Bureau of the PMA, told reporters that Kho’s alleged filming of his sexual encounters was “a dangerous kind of perversion,” because it “involves deception and abuse of women.” “He is tall and handsome but something in him worries me,” Padilla said of Kho. – With Aurea Calica, Delon Porcalla, Reinir Padua, Evelyn Macairan, Katherine Adraneda, Perseus Echeminada, Jess Diaz, Mayen Jaymalin, Rudy Santos, Cecille Suerte Felipe - By Sandy Araneta (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

Kho apparently did not count on any of his victims to risk further public humiliation by coming out in the open to pursue a complaint against him. But TV actress Katrina Halili is a different type of victim. She is pursuing a complaint against Kho at the National Bureau of Investigation and the Professional Regulation Commission. The NBI is eyeing the role of Kho’s friend, Eric Johnston Chua, in spreading the sex videos. As of yesterday, Chua had not surfaced. The Philippine Medical Association, for its part, is studying possible sanctions against Kho. This is not the first time that actresses have found themselves starring without their knowledge in sex videos. And Halili will not be the last, unless laws are passed covering new technology for invading privacy and degrading women and children. Baldwin – a divorced father of a 13-year-old girl – told David Letterman in one of his last interviews on the Late Show, how he taught of getting, or buying, himself a Filipina bride.
‘Alec Baldwin doesn’t deserve a Filipina wife’ MANILA, Philippines - First, Teri Hatcher questioned the medical certificates of Filipino doctors. Then, British show Harry & Paul ridiculed a Filipina maid as a sex symbol. And just recently, Chinese columnist Chip Tsao called the Philippines a nation of slaves. Now, it’s 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin’s turn, joining the ranks of “internationally-recognized” celebrities who have maligned Filipinos, according to critics.
“I think about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point or a Russian one, I don’t care, I’m 51,” Baldwin told Letterman in a May 12 interview. Seemingly delivered in jest, Baldwin’s remark caused the audience to break into laughter and prompted the show’s host, Letterman, to respond: “Get one for me [also], for later.” Totally foul But Baldwin’s joke left a bitter taste in the mouth for lawmaker and women’s rights activist Risa Hontiveros. “He totally doesn’t deserve a Filipina wife,” Hontiveros told GMANews.TV on Monday evening. “He meant that as a joke but it was totally foul.”
since apologized and wrote a book about it. Hontiveros, who lodged a protest against the producers of Harry & Paul last year, is worried Filipinos are being pigeonholed as either domestic workers or brides-for-hire. “His comment is already anecdotal evidence of the growing phenomenon of mailorder-brides and the perception of foreigners that those are Filipinas.” Jean Enriquez, executive director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women-Asia Pacific, was also disappointed that such a “racist” comment came from an actor like Baldwin. The 51-year-old actor is a board member of People For the American Way and a vocal supporter of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). “By joking about mail-order brides he is trivializing human smuggling,” Enriquez said. “It shows that some actors portray themselves as sharp on shows but are actually not in real life.”
Baldwin had recently ended his marriage with actress Kim Bassinger after irreconcilable differences. He was highly criticized after a phone conversation leaked out where he screamed at his child for being hard-headed. He has

Pati si Maja, first timer.

The affair began from the Eucharistic Celebration, which was sponsored by the Philippine Embassy, including the liturgical activities of the readings, responsorial psalm, and the offerings. In the Prayers of the Faithful, a special prayer was said for the country – God bless the Philippines! After the Holy Mass, there followed the garden reception at the Church grounds. “Salo-salo” buffet style of Filipino food and delicacies then began the merrymaking beat of the day, to heighten during the program and games. There were games not only for the adults but also for the children, notable of which were the “pabitin” and the “hitting the pot”.

OFW jobs in Singapore not in peril By Bernice Camille V. Bauzon Although Singaporeans are “tightening their belts” because of the global economic crisis, there are plenty of opportunities for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on the island-state, its ambassador said Thursday. Many Filipino housekeepers in Singapore would hardly be affected by the economic crisis—their employers unlikely to let them go because they have become an integral part of Singaporean lives, Ambassador A. Selverajah told The Manila Times during an exclusive roundtable interview. “Maybe they [Singaporean employers] will cut down on buying a new car and other things, but with regard to hiring housekeepers, there will be no major effect,” he said. “Parents will need to work for a living, so the children have to be looked after.” There are about 100,000 Filipino domestic helpers in Singapore, which also hires domestic helpers from Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Myanmar. “Everybody is welcome in Singapore as long as you come in legally and follow the laws,” Selverajah said. “We will be happy to have you [Filipinos], and I hope you will be happy too in Singapore.” But because of the expected retrenchments of Singaporean workers after the Chinese New Year, the ambassador believes there might be some effect in terms of foreign employment although he reiterated that the households would continue employing OFWs. Helping Singapore Filipinos provide a valuable service, in that they do jobs that Singaporeans cannot perform because they lack the skills, aptitude or simply the desire, he said. “Filipinos are [naturally] very warm and hospitable people,” he said, adding that Singaporeans acknowledge that OFWs “help us grow the economy.” “The Filipino community has become an integral part of Singapore,” Selverajah added. OFWs are vital to the Philippine economy, because of the remittances they send home to their families. Filipinos working abroad remitted more than $14 billion last year, and this year, that figure is expected to grow to about $15 billion— equivalent to about 10 percent of the Philippine economy. In earlier reports, experts expressed fear that the global financial crisis could lead to layoffs of OFWs worldwide. But the Philippine government said growing demands for Filipino labor, particularly in the Middle East, would offset layoffs
One Sunday morning I was once going to Central when I decided to take bus 11. The bus was filled with most Filipinos. Every pair in the bus were talking and sharing their daily routine, their families in the Philippines and so on. Most of the stories seem to be very familiar but a pair of our fellow OFW who were just sitting in front of me has touched me. The woman sitting on the right side made me very attentive to her story which made me switch off my MP3. I listened to their story from Tai Hang to Central. Ate Lorna Ilagan is 48 years old. She is from Batangas, married and she has four children who are already young adult and teenager three ladies and one gentleman. Her husband is driving their own tricycle and

THE INTELLIGENT READER’S CHOICE
FATHER POWER 1 Thessalonians 2:7-2:12 Today I want to write to dads. There’s a lot of brokenness associated with dads. As a pastor I’ve prayed and counseled with many who suffer deeply because they were abused and neglected by their dads. Of course, I have also listened to joy-filled stories of people who thank God for their dads. For a start, dads read this: the father-child relationship defines, to a large extent, the lives of your children. It affects how your children will follow God, relate with other people, and how they will raise their own families. It will determine how they see and value themselves, their sexuality and physical relationships, how they perform in school, how they function or dysfunction in life. You influence their basic knowledge of right and wrong, their health, their economic status. Your influence, good or bad, affects your children for life. Have you heard of “father
power”? Father power is not the physical power of being bigger and stronger than their wives and children but generational power with which God has endowed dads - the power that allows dads to affect people’s lives positively or negatively, for good or evil, for hundreds of years. Dads you can’t hide or ignore from its potency and power. As Stu Weber says, “Whether you like it or not, whether you accept it or not, whether you believe it or not, your influence will span generations long after you’ve left the earth.” So what is this power that fathers possess yet are often clueless or unwilling to acknowledge and practice? Let’s start with the power that God has endowed us with in the creation of life. Fathers and moms are God’s partners in bringing about children in the world. No man should plant his seed in a woman, impregnating her, if he is not willing to accept lifelong responsibility for the child he created. With this
8 Toxic personalities to avoid by Brett Blumenthal - Sheer Balance Although we like to think that the people in our lives are well-adjusted, happy, healthy minded individuals, we sometimes realize that it just isn’t so. Personally, I’ve had moments where I’ll be skipping through my day, happy as can be, thinking life is grand and BAM, I’ll be blindsided by someone who manages to knock the happy wind out of my sails. Sometimes it is easy to write it off and other times, not so much.
Dad, you are a spiritual leader. Lead your family to worship God. Initiate prayer and Bible reading and study in your home. Follow the example of Joshua, who challenged his nation declaring, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 (NIV). Dad, take an honest look Dad’s make sure that your at your fathering. Humble children grow knowing that you love them, accept them, yourself before God and ask him to help you use and value them. Don’t let your father power in a way your sons and daughters become one of those 70 or 80 that honors him. Ask your wife and children how you years old men and women are doing. Be reconciled still dying to hear their dad to them. Happy Father say, “I love you,” or “I’m Power! proud of you.”
power comes responsibility. God holds you responsible and accountable for the welfare of the family. Your father power begins with the acceptance of this responsibility.
wife. Call her up and tell her you are thinking of her. You miss her. You love her. Express it to your children as well. Look them in the eye, and say, “I love you.”
Here’s a second: dads the best that you can ever give to your family is communicated love. Notice the word I used before love. Most fathers I know love their family. They would willingly give their lives for them. They work hard, sacrifice themselves, give up their own comfort, to raise up and support their family. A lot of fathers are surprised or even angry when they are accused of not loving. They do, in their hearts, they know they love. So where is the problem? The problem lies in communicating that love.
Here’s another way you express father power: spend quality time with them. This means listening to them. More importantly, listen to understand them, and not to correct them, or argue with them. Just listen, enjoy them, enjoy their ideas, their humor, their jokes, their pain, fear, enjoy being with them. Here’s a third: dad leading Children don’t spell love “G I F his family by example and T S”. They spell it “T I M E.” life. They will require all of your time and energy, leaving you worn out and your own needs sacrificed. All of these personalities have several things in common. 1) the more these people get away with their behavior, the more they will continue. 2) Unfortunately, most of these people don’t see that what they do is wrong and as a result, talking to them about it will fall on deaf ears, leaving you wondering if you are the crazy one. 3) Most of these people get worse with age, making their impact on you stronger with time.
expressing your love: by blessing the family under your care. This is like Isaac blessing Jacob in Genesis 27:27-29. This blessing comes through prayer, endearing words spoken truthfully and wisely to our children, declaring the promises of God.

Father’s Day Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday in June of every year. Sonora Dodd, of Washington, was the first person to have the idea to create a day to celebrate fathers everywhere. She came up with the idea of Father’s Day while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Sonora wanted a special day to honor her dad, William Smart. Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed after his wife died during the birth of their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children on a rural farm in Washington. As Sonora grew up, she became more aware of the selflessness her father had shown in raising herself and her other five siblings as a single parent. It was only her father that made all the parental sacrifices during her childhood and
he was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous and loving man. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she decided the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington should be on the 19th of June, 1910. President Calvin Coolidge supported Father’s Day to be a national holiday in 1924. However, it was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June to be Father’s Day. President Richard Nixon ended up signing the law which finally made it permanent in 1972.

Gemini May 22-Jun 21 As a Gemini you have a natural charm and wit, which appeals to a wide range of people. This month you can use this to your advantage in the work place and this could lead to promotion. Youngsters will be able to charm their way out of any difficulties at school.
Cancer Jun 22-Jul 22 You need to begin this month by putting your foot down with a friend who thinks that they are acting in your best interest. Romance may be difficult mid month and you will need to think seriously about how to move forward. Finances are looking up by the end of the month.
Jul 23-Aug 22
Emotions are running high in the first half of the month, but you are unusually perceptive right now and can resolve things with a few well chosen words. Later in the month you will have the ability to persuade and you can use this to improve your career position or gain an advantage in a competition.
Virgo Aug 23- Sep 23 A range of positive influences this month mean that you will see success literally falling into your lap. You may find yourself getting so excited that you lose some perspective and forget your friends and family a little. Trust the advice of a loved one this month.
Libra Sep 24- Oct 23 It may seem a little early in the year to be thinking about taking a vacation, but the planets indicate that this is the best time for you to travel. You are in the mood for soaking up some culture making this month a period of intense personal growth band learning for you.
Scorpio Oct 24- Nov 22 Scorpios rarely need to be told to be cautious as it is their standard approach to decision making. However, the planetary influences are encouraging you to take risks right now. The new feeling may be interesting, but do be careful as there is a potential for losing money this month!
Sagittarius Nov 23-Dec 21 If you act now success will be fully within your grasp. A friend will be on hand to add their own particular skills. Finances could be hugely improved if you willing to make the most of the opportunity before you right now. Don’t let personal disagreements distract you from the prize!

Aquarius Jan 21- Feb 19 If you are looking for success this month then you can rely on your charming personality as your charisma receives a major boost. Emotionally, this is a month where you should be looking to someone to make some kind of a commitment, don’t be scared to give them an ultimatum!
Pisces Feb 20- Mar 20 Nostalgia is likely to dominate the first couple of weeks as contact with relatives brings back a number of fond memories. However, the second half of the month will be demanding as a number of outstanding projects need your close attention. Don’t let romance distract you!

What a placebo! A funny story I know comes from someone’s father-in-law who is a pharmacist. One of his customers complained that the capsules she’d been given weren’t working. “Oh,” he said, “You’ve been taking them the wrong way. You have to take them so that the green half goes in first.” He said that she stopped by a week later to let him know that her medication was working fine now.
