Tainted milk, yogurt, ice cream on sale in HK China's deadly baby milk scandal has sparked the recall of all Yili products from Hong Kong stores after eight of them were found to contain the same industrial chemical that has killed four infants and sickened 6,200 more in the mainland. The recall - which covers milk, yogurt, ice cream and all other products made by Yili Industrial Group - comes after tests in Hong Kong found melamine in eight of the company's products. The crisis deepened last night with Chinese state television reporting that melamine had been found in milk from three of the country's biggest dairies. Government inspectors found 24 of the 295 batches it tested from dairy companies Mengniu, Yili and Guangming were contaminated, CCTV reported. Hong Kong officials have warned against consuming any Yili products and are so concerned about the situation that they have ordered tests to be carried out on all imported milk powder for babies and pregnant women within the next week. The stepped-up action against tainted milk products came on the same day as the mainland reported the death of a fourth child in Xinjiang. Beijing has also expanded tests to include all livestock feed to track down any trace of melamine contamination in an attempt to allay concerns of a problem in the wider agricultural sector. In Hong Kong, the Centre for Food Safety found melamine in eight samples of Yili products. The results were from tests on 30 of the 40 milk products from 22 problematic mainland companies. "We urge people to stop taking all relevant brand [Yili] milk products now," the center's controller, Constance Chan Honyee, said.

Children aged two or below would exceed their tolerable daily intake if they consumed two glasses of the Yili highcalcium low-fat milk beverage, she said. Yili last night expressed its "deep regret for any distress which may have been caused to Hong Kong consumers." The company also said it is investigating the reasons for and source of the contamination of its products. All importers, including Eugina Limited, which imports Yili ice cream and ice-bars, have been asked to stop importing the brands involved. Chan said other mainland milk products, including Mengniu, will not be recalled before tests results are out within the next few days. "Our decision is based on laboratory results," she said. She assured residents that all baby milk powders sold in Hong Kong are international brands that said they do not use mainland ingredients. However, the center will still conduct tests on them before the end of next week. Chan also said there is no reason to believe the contamination has

gone into meat despite the mainland's decision to test cow feed. "Our test priority is in milk products, we'll also look into the mainland investigation results. If there's a reason to believe the contamination is in fertilizer, we'll also test meat," she said. Meanwhile, mainland police arrested 12 more people in Hebei yesterday, bringing the total number of suspects in custody to 18. Six allegedly sold melamine, while the other 12 were suppliers accused of selling contaminated milk. Suppliers to the dairy companies are believed to have added the chemical melamine, normally used in plastics, to watered- down milk to make it appear higher in protein. The Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has revoked the inspectionfree status on milk. At least two producers, Mengniu and Yili, had enjoyed "inspection-free" status on some products.

Two new patients as cake, sweets go on tainted list The number of Hong Kong children found with kidney stones rose to four as the industrial chemical melamine believed to be responsible was found in cakes for the first time. In addition, 365 children have been referred to special assessment centers after displaying symptoms related to kidney problems. The Centre for Food Safety said tests on Four Seas Cake (strawberry flavor) showed more than twice the permitted amount that became effective yesterday. The chemical was also found in White Rabbit Creamy Candies. The center urged the public to stop consuming these items and said importers had agreed to recall the products. A spokesman said no one will be prosecuted since the samples were collected before the amendment setting the melamine limit at 2.6 parts per million for nondairy products came into effect. The two new kidney patients, aged nine years and 29 months, were living in the mainland. The nine-year-old, who has been drinking two to four packets of Mengniu milk (250g) purchased in Shenzhen everyday for the past four years, was admitted to a private hospital in Hong Kong last Saturday. He has since been discharged and is now in stable condition. The 29-month-old boy had been drinking Sanlu and Yili milk since he was eight months old. He was examined at Kwong Wah Hospital outpatient clinic on Monday and remains under treatment. About one-quarter of the 1,328 children seeking evaluations at the 18 general outpatient clinics yesterday were referred to the seven special assessment centers for further checkups after

displaying symptoms related to kidney problems. None of the children, however, required hospital admission. The symptoms involved blood in the urine, a small amount of urination, discomfort when urinating or bad temper. Secretary for Food and Health York Chow Yat-ngok said a task force will study the number of Hong Kong-born children living in the mainland. The center hotline's, 2125 1133, has received 2,148 inquiries, with 651 callers claiming they or their children had consumed tainted milk products. Of these, 157 claimed to have symptoms of renal problems. A 16-month-old child in Macau, who was fed Nestle milk powder, has been diagnosed with a kidney stone.

Philippine government negotiates new overseas jobs Manila: The Philippine government has started negotiations with various foreign governments to allow them to hire a total of 300,000 more overseas Filipino workers for the next 10 years, a senior official said. Philippine labour officials are talking with their Australian counterparts for the opening of 30,000 jobs in mining, health care and information technology, said Labour Secretary Marianito Roque. Negotiations are underway with representatives from Finland and France for the employment of Filipino professionals and other skilled workers, said Roque, adding the ongoing negotiations are part of the government's efforts to provide more jobs and security to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Philippine government officials are trying to place Filipino seafarer in Norway and Denmark, where the Scandinavian shipping industry is in need of 13,000 maritime workers next year, said Roque. Canadian provinces have also scheduled the signing of a labour agreement with Philippine officials this month, said Roque. Philippine government officials are also eyeing the deployment of over a thousand OFWs at the oil and mining projects in Madagascar, said Roque. Jobs available in Madagascar are for mechanical and quality control engineers, safety officers, labour controllers, foremen, welders, pipe fitters, electricians and construction workers, said Roque. Better salaries "The successful implementation of the government's memoranda of understanding with foreign governments will pave the way for many skilled OFWs to find better salaries and more quality employment," said Roque, adding, "This approach has ensured protection of the OFWs' rights and welfare in all the countries where they are sent." The Philippines is the world's third largest source of overseas workers. The OFWs send a total of $25 billion (Dh1.96 billion) back home each year.

NAIA-BI female officer linked to human trafficking sacked Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan yesterday relieved a female immigration officer at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) for her alleged involvement in yesterday's foiled departure of 17 undocumented contract workers to the Middle East. Libanan issued an order recalling immigration officer Mindaya Ombawa to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) main office in Intramuros pending investigation of her alleged involvement in facilitating the attempted departure of the 17 passengers for Jordan and Syria. Libanan said Ombawa was directed to report to her mother unit at the BI Regulation Division pending investigation of the incident involving the 17 tourist workers, all of whom are believed to be minors. "We will never condone the involvement of any of our personnel in human trafficking. Such practice warrants the stiffest penalty for it is tantamount to exposing our women to abuse and exploitation in foreign lands," the BI chief said. He added he had asked NAIA-BI head supervisor Ferdinand Sampol to immediately investigate and submit a report on the incident. Libanan said he will not hesitate to suspend or dismiss Ombawa from the

service depending on the outcome of the investigation. He, however, assured Ombawa she will be afforded due process in the investigation and the opportunity to defend herself, including the right to engage the services of a lawyer. Reports said the 17 passengers were apprehended by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation at the newly opened NAIA Terminal 3 as they were about to board a Cebu Pacific Airlines flight to Hong Kong en route to the Middle East. Initial investigation showed the minors are natives of Maguindanao and Cotabato in Mindanao and their passports were tampered through photo substitution of their look alikes. Two suspected illegal recruiters, identified only as "Teng" and "Toni," who allegedly hired the minors, were later arrested inside Ombawa's car after a brief car chase. It was Ombawa, who is assigned to the old NAIA terminal, who allegedly instructed the passengers to check in at the airline counters and proceed to her at the BI counter for their departure clearances. maritime colleges have been approved by the Commission on Higher Education. He said these colleges offer three-year courses like marine deck and engineers. "Every year they produce 30,000 graduates," Fr. Bernardini said based on estimates. These graduates would then be classified as able seamen or ordinary seamen after examinations from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). He said the market is saturated due to the nature of seafarers' temporary employment contracts. In 2007, the Philippine Overseas and Employment Agency reported that 226,900 seafarers were deployed. Philippines checking if sick children had Chinese milk products The Philippine health department is checking infants hospitalised with kidney ailments to see if they were exposed to contaminated milk products from China, an official said. National Epidemiology Centre chief Eric Tayag said Health Secretary Francisco Duque ordered the investigation but would not give details so as not to cause a panic. "We will see if they have a history with milk formula feeding and we will trace this back... to where the milk formula came from,'' said the doctor. Duque asked parents to inform the department immediately if their infants have any kidney problems. The Philippine government on Tuesday ordered an immediate ban on the sale and import of all milk products from China. AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

MANILA, Philippines Despite the scare caused by melaminecontaminated milk from China, "repacked" bags of powdered milk are surfacing in markets in Metro Manila, a radio report said Wednesday. Radio dzBB's Manny Vargas reported that a random check of markets in northern Metro Manila before dawn Wednesday showed many vendors selling the repacked bags of milk, with vendors shaving off P1 to P2 from the "branded" products.

"Ang iba sa atin walang konsensya, gusto pang mandaya para dumami ang kanilang kita (Some vendors have no conscience. fact that there is a mounting problem with piracy as 10 ships with 60 Filipino seafarers have already been taken as hostages by Somali pirates. "It is really a huge problem coming from the Suez Canal and it is mostly Somali pirates which seem to be well prepared and capable of long distances -beyond the 200 kilometers protection line--and fast crafts, well armed, they can take any kind of ships for money's sake," Fr. Bernardi said. He said changing the contracts or issuing a deployment ban would not be a preventive measure. An option, he said, would be to temporarily close the Suez Canal until the situation normalizes. "I know for a fact that some of them would have to endure that piracy imprisonment for is unfortunate that there is no other way unless for the time being the Suez Canal is closed, which nobody wants to do that," he said. At the moment, he said the focus is on the geographical position as ships have been advised to stay close to the Yemeni border and further away from Somalia.

'Big Bang' Machine Switched On, We're Still Here GENEVA (Reuters) - Physicists around the world, some in pajamas and others with champagne, celebrated the first tests on Wednesday of a huge particle-smashing machine they hope will simulate the "Big Bang" that created the universe. Experiments using the underground Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, the biggest and most complex machine ever made, could revamp modern physics and unlock secrets about the universe and its origins. Staff in the control room on the border of Switzerland and France clapped as two beams of particles were sent silently first one way and then the other around the LHC's 17-mile (27km) underground chamber. "Things can go wrong at any time," said project leader Lyn Evans, who wore jeans and running shoes for the LHC's debut. "But this morning we had a great start." It will be weeks or months before two particles ever crash together in the giant tube, and even longer before scientists can interpret results, said Jos Engelen, chief scientific officer

of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. "Anything between a year and four years, depending on how difficult this new physics is to find," Engelen said. Pajama-clad scientists calling themselves "Nerds in Nightshirts" partied at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois as they waited late into the night for the first signals from the 10 billion Swiss franc ($9 billion) machine. The experiments could confirm the existence of the Higgs Boson, a theoretical particle named after Peter Higgs, who first proposed it in 1964. Also referred to as the "God particle," the Higgs Boson could help explain how matter has mass. "I think it's pretty likely" that it will be found, Higgs told reporters at the University of Edinburgh, where he is a retired professor of physics. Scientists halted the particle beam's counter-clockwise spin temporarily on Wednesday afternoon after problems with the machine's magnets caused its temperature to warm slightly. CERN officials said such minor glitches were to be expected given the intricacy of the machine, which is cooled to minus 271.3 degrees Celsius (minus 456.3 degrees Fahrenheit).

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Talk about a Big Mac attack! Don Gorske says he has eaten 23,000 of the burgers in 36 years. The Fond du Lac man said he hit the 23,000 milestone last month, continuing a culinary obsession that began May 17, 1972, and is fed by his obsessivecompulsive disorder. "I enjoy them every day," said Gorske, 54. "I need two to fill me up." Gorske has kept every burger receipt in a box. He says he was always fascinated with numbers, and watching McDonald's track its number of customers motivated him to track his own consumption. Despite a diet some would call unhealthy, Gorske says he keeps himself in good shape. He says he's 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds, and walks as many as 10 miles a day. He used to order fries every day in the 1980s but began to cut back in the '90s, now eating them about once a month. He eats two Big Macs and two parfaits a day. Gorske has written a book about his experience.

"Sometimes people call me a freak but it doesn't bother me. I just say respect people as they are," he told The Associated Press. "I just want to make sure people understand I'm not going to change." He can instantly recall the eight days in which he failed to satisfy his craving. One was in 1988, the day his mother died, to respect a request she made. "I made a promise to her and I always keep my promises," he said. "I also promised her I wouldn't cut my hair and in 20 years I haven’t." He twice failed to attack a Big Mac because of his job. A correctional-institution employee, he said a number of work emergencies kept him on the clock past midnight so he recorded those days as missed days. Three other times he was traveling and couldn't find a McDonald's. He also went Big Mac-less on Thanksgiving Day 2000, and during a 1982 snowstorm that prevented the local McDonald's franchise from opening. "That's when I started a habit where I kept them in the freezer," he said. He keeps one or two burgers on hand but increases his inventory to four to five during the winter.

Oyster lunch yields 26 pearls for Lebanese couple BEIRUT, Lebanon Lebanese restaurant owner Raymond Salha and his wife were having oysters for lunch when she made a stunning discovery - a cluster of 26 pearls inside an oyster on her plate. The find 10 days ago at his Al-Fanar Restaurant in the southern port city of Tyre was a "total surprise," Salha told The Associated Press on Wednesday. It was one of about 200 oysters they had cooked that day at the restaurant. As his wife opened the shell, she let out a gasp and said, "Look at this oyster, there are lots of pearls in it," Salha recounted. The couple immediately believed the pearls were valuable, so Salha called the city's maritime museum which sent a team that took the oyster - and the pearls still inside it - away for testing. At the museum, Salha said officials later told him they counted "only" 25 pearls. He insisted however, that he and his wife Amal counted a total of 26 pearls of varying sizes inside the oyster, some very small. A few days later, the oyster was preserved and returned by the museum, along with the pearls. Salha, who insists the oyster still contains 26 pearls, plans to keep it on display at his restaurant. Oysters fished off the Lebanese coast are regularly on the restaurant's menu in the summer, but Salha and his wife had never seen

anything like this find. Once, long ago, they found a single pearl while opening an oyster. Although the pearls are not believed to be worth a lot of money, Salha says their importance is in the sheer number found inside a single shell. Oysters from the Lebanese waters of the Mediterranean are of a different variety than those usually served in European restaurants, which are larger in size. Salha said he buys a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of oysters for about US$10 from the fishermen during oyster season between August and October. He showed the oyster on Wednesday to reporters and visitors, and later placed it on a shelf on the restaurant wall, covering it with a cloth for protection. Asked whether he plans to get in touch with The Guinness Book of Records about the discovery, Salha said not for now. "If they read about it and find that it is a record, then they can come and record it themselves," he said.

Omega-3: Lifelong intakes necessary for benefits in old age? By Stephen Daniells Higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), may decrease the risk of dementia, and improve survival in older people, suggest three new studies. Two prospective studies from Norway and France measured omega-3 levels using biomarkers and showed positive benefits for the fatty acids in relation to mortality and cognitive function, respectively. However, supplementation of older people with high dose omega-3 does not affect mood or well-being, according to the findings of a third study from the Netherlands. All the studies are published in the new issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Putting the studies into context, William Harris from Sanford Research at the University of South Dakota commented in an accompanying editorial: "In short, the story they tell is this: low in vivo concentrations of EPA and/or DHA predict an increased risk of death in frail, hospitalised octogenarians from Norway and an accelerated cognitive decline in freeliving septuagenarians from France. "On the other hand, intervention with EPA plus DHA in the healthy elderly had no effect on mental well-being. "Together, these findings suggest that dietary habits that include higher versus lower intakes of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids may bring certain health benefits that short-term supplementation cannot provide," added Harris. Omega-3 versus mortality In the Norwegian study, Morten Lindberg from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and co-workers recruited 254 frail, elderly patients and measured dietary intakes of omega-3 fatty acids using plasma phospholipid concentrations of EPA. Over the course of three years of follow-up, the researchers found that people with the lowest average plasma phospholipid EPA concentrations were about 40 per cent more likely to die, compared to people with higher levels. "Overall mortality in frail, elderly, acutely sick patients was inversely and nonlinearly associated with EPA concentrations," concluded the researchers. Commenting on this study, Harris said: "The authors concluded that only those in the at-risk quartile might have benefited from omega-3 fatty acid supplementation. Clearly, this is a speculative extrapolation; nevertheless, it is fair to say that higher tissue omega-3 fatty acid (at least EPA) concentrations appeared to be protective. "Although no specific mechanism of action was identified, a generalized

health benefit arising from a prolonged dietary intake of oily fish (the presumed source of the plasma EPA) would surprise no one familiar with the omega3 fatty acid literature." Omega-3 versus dementia In the French study, Cecilia Samieri from Inserm (U897) in Bordeaux and co-workers followed the 1214 nondemented participants in the Three-City Study from Bordeaux. Over the course of four years, 65 of the participants developed dementia, state the researchers. Comparing blood levels of EPA, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), and total omega-3 levels, the researchers found that only higher blood levels of EPA were associated with a 31 per cent lower incidence of dementia. Moreover, higher ratios of omega-6 fatty acid blood levels, particularly arachidonic acid (AA), to DHA and total omega-3 levels were linked to a greater dementia risk. "A high plasma EPA concentration may decrease the risk of dementia, whereas high ratios of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids and of AA to DHA may increase the risk of dementia, especially in depressed older persons," stated the researchers. "The role of EPA in dementia warrants further research," they concluded. Commenting on this study, Harris said: "On finding decreased concentrations of omega-3 in the impaired, one is tempted to conclude that all we need to do is increase the EPA and/or DHA intake to alter the outcome, but clearly we cannot know from a case control study whether this is true. "Only prospective trials can address this question, and, at least to date, such trials have been less than consistent, as noted by the authors." Omega-3 and mood For the Dutch study, Ondine van de Rest from Wageningen University and co-workers performed a 26-week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 302 volunteers. The 65-year old subjects were randomly assigned to consume high dose omega-3 (1800 mg/d EPA plus DHA), lower dose omega-3 (400 mg/d EPA plus DHA), or placebo. While plasma concentrations of the fatty acids did increase according to the omega3 dose, this was not associated with any significant change in the mental well-being of the volunteers in any of the groups. "In this randomised, double-blind, placebocontrolled trial we observed no effect of EPA plus DHA

supplementation for 26 wk on mental well-being in the general older population studied," concluded van de Rest. Commenting on this study, Harris said: "Although one can always suggest that higher doses may have been more effective, it is more likely that what is done is done; at 70 years of age, supplementation is simply unable to materially alter emotion or mentation." Take home message In his summary, Harris concluded that all three studies underscored the "importance of maintaining high dietary omega-3 fatty acids intakes throughout life". Charice performs duet with Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden

CONGRATS to Iza Calzado. After doing the Hollywood movie, "The Echo" where she co-stars with Jesse Bradford and Amelia Warner and which will be shown next year, she's now nominated in the coming International Emmy Awards as a semi-finalist in the best performance by an actress category. This is for her performance as Sophia, the wife of Robin Padilla in the former GMA7 show, "Joaquin Bordado." The International Emmy Awards will be held in November in New York City.

The country's pride, Charice again proved that dreams do come true after she performed a duet with one of her favorite international stars -Celine Dion, September 15, Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In the concert dubbed as "Taking Chances World Tour, "Charice sang the hit "Because You Loved Me" with her idol Celine. The song was actually chosen for and dedicated to Charice's strength and love -- her mom Raquel Pempengco. In the concert, the Canadian international star first told the life story of Charice. "This young girl's name is Charice.

"It's really a big honor for me at kahit hindi ako manalo, karangalan pa rin 'yun para sa'kin," she says. Two programs of ABS-CBN are also nominated. For drama series, it's "Pangarap na Bituin" that starred Sarah Geronimo and for comedy series, it's "Volta" that starred Ai Ai de las Alas. Let's hope that at least one of them wins an award.

KC happy not because of Billy FRESH from the box-office success of her first movie "For the First Time," KC Concepcion now shares her blessings with the less fortunate children. The UNICEF Ambassador hosted the benefit concert of the Virlanie Foundation, founded by French Dominique Lemay, held at the Peninsula Manila last Thursday. Her genuine kindness reflects on how she mingled with the Virlanie children. Obviously, they know her by heart as they happily clowned around with her backstage. Happiness was all over her face that night not because of Billy Crawford who also performed in the concert; but her staunch support to the foundation. KC gave the audience a sample of her impeccable French to which she got a resounding applause from a French who watched the show. Also, more cheers when she

acknowledged the presence of former First Lady Imelda Marcos in the audience.

a good kisser" So, did they rekindle their romantic feeling that night? Just asking...

According to the director of the show Roxanne Lapuz, KC and Billy were chosen by the foundation because of their inspiring image and their status as youth icons. That is aside from the fact that both have French connections. KC studied in Paris for almost four years while Billy has made a big name in Paris. Aside from KC and Billy, Pops Fernandez, Liza Macuja, Pinky Marquez, Jay-R, Willie Nepomuceno with RJ Ledesma as KC's co-host shared their big heart with the street children. But, according to Lapuz, the show's main performers or bida are the Virlanie children. After all, the main objective of the foundation is to give these less fortunate children a better future so that these kids will become, as the title of the show aptly says, "Somebody Someday." Meanwhile, isn't it that KC was romantically linked to Billy once? Remember what Billy said that "KC's

star news 9 I'm so excited. She's 16 years old and she's from the Philippines. Let me tell you she has a voice that can literally blow the roof off Madison Square. But the real story is, Charice and her mom escaped a terrifying experience and had to leave Charice's violent father. You know, to start a life on their own, Charice vowed to save her mom from life's desperation. Through prayers and dreams and God-given talent, an incredible voice, Charice entered and won every singing contest in her native country and eventually got noticed. By such a fortunate chance people saw the show on Oprah and Oprah wanted to take her under her wing and David Foster joined them. "I had a chance to see Charice perform one of my songs in Oprah last week. I have a little difficulty to talk right now because I met Charice and I'm so emotional and so I'm searching and looking for my words trying to control my emotion. I invited here to come her tonight to sing with me...," said Celine Dion. After Celine's lovely introduction to Charice she invited her to come up on stage and join her. Celine then told Charice how spectacular she is and how she looked really beautiful. Celine asked the young diva how she feels to be with her on the same stage. Charice admitted that she's nervous but Celine calmed her and said that she does not have to be. "First of all you look spectacular you're beautiful, you're shaking, how do you feel? Don't be nervous I think people will understand that you're nervous. But let me tell you one thing, the talent we're not going to talk about because you have that, we're not going to talk about strength because you have that (Celine pointing to Charice's mom Raquel Pempengco) and so the love. And I have to tell you that the family we have to talk about because you have that too. One

time my manager, my husband told me 'Celine', because when I started to sing I was 12 years old so 12 and 16, it's the same, okay? "He told me 'Celine I know you're nervous, don't be scared. You love to sing. When you go up there you'll be nervous don't be.' I will give you an image that you can think about, think about that. All the people you see in front of you are your brothers and sisters. You are singing in your living room and it's your family," Celine told Charice. Charice in return said that she was ready to sing and agreed to dedicate their song "Because You Loved Me" to her mother Raquel. The crowd, in a standing ovation, roared and praised Celine and Charice after their performance. "You did amazing, and the roof of the Madison (blew) up tonight," said Celine. Celine also said that she loved Charice and that she could not wait to perform with Charice for a full concert. "When you do perform in Madison Square are you going to invite me? I love you and I can not wait to be with you to perform here for a whole concert," Celine said before she let Charice leave the concert stage.

a + b = 3 Ltd Financial Literacy - Because money is more than adding up figures

SAVING FOR EDUCATION This is not a surprise. Since her FINANCIAL birth, you LITERACY by Sophie Paine knew that your daughter would do studies. You even encouraged her to get good marks at school; a good education will surely help her get a better job and payroll. Going to college will broaden her possibilities to change jobs too in the future. But she has grown too fast! And college is in two years' time! You will never have enough money to pay her for several years of college: it keeps you awake at night.

was not the right one! Once your child has a better idea on the "dreamed" job, then encourage him/her to continue his/her research work. What degree is required or strongly recommended for this job? Are there several possibilities? How long are the studies? What colleges offer this degree? Where are they? Once you get clearer facts and data on all the

maturity, requirements? Students' loans usually enable the students to get money at the start of their studies and pay back after they have graduated and once they start working. What are the students' jobs possibilities? Are they compatible with college studies requirements? You can mix several types of financing in order to avoid a huge debt for instance:

Let's stay positive and focus on solutions! First, involve your child: what does (s)he want to do after high school? What kind of jobs or career does (s)he want to have? How motivated is (s)he? Is the field (s)he wants to study offer good job possibilities? If your child is not sure, try to encourage him/her to do some research work: starting from what (s)he likes doing and what (s)he is good at doing, what

options, it is time to budget! I should have mentioned it before: don't let all this research work and the mentoring support you give your child... have a deadly impact on your phone bill! So, emails and letters! Once again, this is a learning opportunity for your child: let him/her do the budget! Give him/her some guidelines, like the following spreadsheet. You can also have several spreadsheets according to the various options:

kind of jobs would fit his/her skills and wishes? Once (s)he has a better idea of the type of job, why not ask him to try to meet or interview people who do this job. That will help him/her better understand the requirements and avoid disappointment and above all college drop out - you don't want to spoil your money! That will help your child take initiatives, make a well thought choice, learn how to plan ahead and prepare a big life project. At the same time, it will avoid his/her blaming you for enrolling into a degree which

So now you both know the truth of the cost... time to work on the financing. Let your child research all the possibilities: financial aid, like scholarship grants, dormitory allowance or book allowance, students' loan, students' jobs. So saving is not the only way to finance college. What are the requirements to obtain a grant or an allowance? Can your child apply? What are the deadlines? What are the various loans offered; who offers them (private or public institution)? What are the terms: amount, interest,

With this plan, you see how much you have to save and your child has learned several valuable money lessons: planning, choosing between options, making the most of money! And don't forget! Planning is key so the best way to prepare for your child’s college years is still to anticipate and start since your child's early age. Even small amounts add up. You can either manage your saving on your own or decide to open a college saving plan which will take care of investing your saving and making them available and hopefully bigger when your children start their studies. Do your homework too: investigate which financial institution you decide to take a college saving plan if you decide to do so: are they well known? How long have they operated? What are the fees? What do they invest in? What are the conditions?

STAR* 14 WISE PEOPLE DO WHAT GOD CALLS THEM TO DO Recently, I overheard a question in one of the classes in church. The question was "how can I know my spiritual gift?" She wants to know "what God has called her to do?" Knowing your call is important. Foremost, your life's calling comes from God. You're accountable to him. Matthew 25 provides an exciting, but could also be a chilling account of what could happen when we all stand at the court of God. Second, your life's calling is a means to make a difference in the world. This is your once-in-a lifetime opportunity to be that special light that points people back to God. Lastly, your life's call determines the joy, the significance, and how rich you truly are as a person in this life and the hereafter. I interrupted the class (you can do this when you are the pastor, lol), and asked the teacher's permission to share what I thought about the question. I pointed out that the Bible never talks about "discovering" your spiritual gift. The Bible assumes that followers of Jesus have been given spiritual gifts, and that they

know what they were called to do.

what Jesus promises to those who come to him in repentance and faith? John 3:16 provides the answer: eternal life.

What is a call? A call is a divine summons to a way of life, a responsibility, a longterm task. It is God's call, a The other call refers to your deep sense that you have life's calling – your service to been given God and others. something that Followers of Christ are all make you called to do something. accountable to Let me share my "call God for how story". God called me you live your when I was 18, on a life and to a Saturday night. That task. Along night I receive God's call with this call to salvation and my call are gifts from to ministry. others. I live to make disciples who know and live by the Word, and who love their God! I am turning 53 this month, and am still excited, revved up, and motivated to preach and teach and to make more disciples. Do you know what it means to be called? This is hard to explain, but there is one commonality of God's call. Whether the call comes in a dramatic way, like that of the apostle Paul as recorded in Acts 9, or that of the 12 disciples whose call came in series of calls, a called person knows and understands in those whispered words and events that captures his or her soul to a conviction that God has spoken and directed. Here is the ultimate result of a call: you will never again be the same after this. Your life takes a turn to his direction. God nudges you to a particular people or function. Once you hear it, you're changed forever.

teach and preach. And when I sit to write, or when I read and study I feel so near God. And when I teach or preach, I feel so much joy. Here's another thought to your call. When God calls you to do something, others will see it and will appreciate it. At times however there will be those who will resist what you do. Jesus was resisted throughout his ministry. There were those who saw what God was doing through him, but there were others who made up their mind that he was out of his mind, that he was not from God.

our heart. But doing what God has called you opens you up to a joy and deep sense of fulfillment. Again Liddle's words "When I run, I feel God's pleasure." Are you doing what God has called you to do? One clue is the level of your joy. Are you excited to be alive? Do you wake up each day expectant of what God may bring to you that day. Some of you may need some help. Call me or Emma.

A college student was in a philosophy class which had a discussion about God's existence. The professor presented the following logic: "Has anyone in this class heard God?" Nobody spoke. "Has anyone in this class touched God?" Again, nobody spoke. "Has anyone in this class seen God?" When nobody spoke for the third time, he simply stated, "Then there is no God." One student thought for a second, and then asked for permission to reply. Curious to hear this bold student's response, the professor granted it, and the student stood up and asked the following questions of his classmates: "Has anyone in this class heard our professor's brain?" Silence. "Has anyone in this class touched our professor's brain?" Absolute silence. "Has anyone in this class seen our professor's brain?" When nobody in the class dared to speak, the student concluded, "Then, according to our professor's logic, it must be true that our professor has no brain!" (...The student received an "A" in the class.)

Celestial Computer Contest Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who was better at using the computer. They had been going at it for days, and God was tired of hearing all the bickering. Finally, God said, "Cool it. I am going to set up a test which will take two hours and it will judge who does the better job." So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away. They moused. They did spreadsheets. They wrote reports. They sent faxes. They sent e-mail. They sent out e-mail with attachments. They downloaded. They did some genealogy reports. They made cards. They did every known job. But, ten minutes before the time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky! Thunder rolled, the rain poured, and of course, the electricity went off. Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in the underworld. Jesus
