MR. ARMAN VILLASOTO IN HIS NEW CHALLENGE FOR MR. ASIA 2008 - P.13 PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE DAY On June 12, 1898 Filipino revolutionary forces under General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippine Island from the Colonial rule of Spain. However, the declaration was not recognized by the United States or Spain. On July 4, 1946 representatives of the United States of America and the Representatives of the Philippines signed a Treaty of General Relations between the two Government. The Treaty provided for the recognition of the independence of the Republic of the Philippines. The Philippines celebrates its Independence Day on June 12, 1898 when the

Philippines declared independence from Spain, although its independence was only recognized on July 4, 1946 by the United States. From 1946 to 1961, Independence Day was observed on July 4, but President Diosdado Macapagal, upon the advice of historians, reverted to the June 12 date, which up to that time had been observed as Flag Day. Ever since then, Filipinos all over the globe has celebrated the Philippine Independence day by heart and in their own special way of sharing to everybody their pride and happiness of being a country of democracy and freedom.

Mr. Philippines 2008 Body Building Championship at Greenhills San Juan Music Museum on April 26, 2008 organized by the Philippine Federation of Body Building was the most recent bodybuilding competition of Arman Villasoto. Just 6 days earlier, he joined and won 2nd place at "The HongKong Bodybuilding Championships." With only less than a week of training, he still has to maintain the strict diet routine. Unlike his other competitions, Arman admits that he can binge on any sumptuous meal that he can think of after the event.

Arman, with his boss who untiringly support him all the way flew to Manila together with Roel Boholst the day before the final competition of Mr. Philippines. With all Bodybuilders from different parts of the nation, Arman showed his graceful and iron pose in stage. When asked how he feels and what he has in mind during that day, he only said, "I am confident and this is for the Philippines." It was also a good time for him to meet and chat with his old buddies who always have faith in him and still looking forward to Arman's Bodybuilding Career's success.

Workers oppose P20 pay hike, seen to unite behind P125 legislated hike

Most labor organizations opposed the P20 wage hike announced by President Arroyo Thursday, calling it an "insult" in light of increases in prices of rice, other food items, and transport. "A P20 wage hike will not satisfy anybody," said Dr. Rene Ofreneo, former dean of the UP School of Labor and Industrial Relations. Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) spokesman Alex Aguilar said in a separate interview with abs-cbnNEWS.com/ Newsbreak that a P20 wage increase would be "fatal to the wage boards." "If it's too small, the workers will really get mad at them (wage board members)," Aguilar told abs-cbnNEWS.com/ Newsbreak. The TUCP had petitioned the Metro Manila wage board for a P80 across-theboard daily wage increase so that workers can "cope with the increasing prices of commodities and cost of living" and if they are to "meet the basic needs of their families." In defending its P80 petition, the TUCP had calculated an 11% increase in consumer prices from August 2007 to December 2008. It factored in the "continuing increases in deregulated oil prices, automatic adjustments in rates of utilities", among others. An P80 across-the-board wage increase would raise the daily minimum wage in Metro Manila from P362 to P442 for non-agricultural workers. Legislated wage hike Rene Magtubo, former party-list representative of the labor group, Partido Manggagawa, said the low wage hike would push workers to press government to approve a legislated P125 daily wage increase. In the previous Congress, the Lower House approved the P125 across-the-board wage hike demanded by workers. Aguilar said a P20 wage increase would prompt workers to call for the abolition of the regional wage boards and would force workers to seek the help of Congress in passing a new minimum wage law. Mata said it has always been the position of the Alliance of Progressive Labor that the "wage boards should be abolished."

Villar bats for P1-B fund to bring home OFWs in distress SENATE President Manny Villar is pushing for the establishment of a P1-billion fund to provide for the early repatriation and adequate assistance to Filipinos in distress overseas. "While there may be comprehensive set of laws protecting the overseas workers, its implementation in reality remains wanting. In particular, the funding requirement needed to effect a meaningful and truly caring OFW environment is negligible," Villar said. Villar added the Constitution, the Labor Code, the Migrant Workers Act, various executive orders and treaties have the same intention of protecting overseas workers but Filipinos in distress continue to swell in number. "It has been reported that a substantial number of Filipinos are in detention in various countries. The cases of maltreatments, abusive employers and harassments and the proportional upward spike in abductions and wars between and among countries have resulted in the increasing number of OFWs in distress. The Philippine embassies and consulates have been home to these unfortunate migrant workers waiting for repatriation," he said.

He said the wage boards have failed to operationalize the "living wage" mandate in the Constitution. Instead, Mata said the wage setting by the regional wage boards have helped "depress wages." In other countries, Mata said the minimum wage is only the "floor wage." Most wages are higher than the minimum wage. But in the Philippines, he said the minimum wage acts as the "ceiling wage." Mata lamented that the regional wage boards also allow wage hike exemptions such as small companies, start-up firms, and companies in distress. 2.7 million to benefit Meanwhile, a senior labor official said around 2.7 million minimum wage earners would benefit from an increase in wages. Ciriaco Lagunzad, executive director of the National Wages and Productivity Commission, told abs-cbnNEWS.com/ Newsbreak that 2.7 million workers will be covered by increases in minimum wages. An additional 3 million wage earners will also benefit since employers have to correct distortions in wages when the minimum wages go up. "If your perspective is who will benefit, around 5.7 to 6 million. That's 2.7 million, minimum wage earners. And because of the correction of

Villar cited a Department of Foreign Affairs statistics showing that as of December 2007, 28 Filipinos face death penalty cases: 10 in Malaysia; nine in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; four in Kuwait, three in China; one in Brunei Darrusalam; and one in the United States of America. In his recent trip to the Middle East, Villar listened to underage workers tell their stories of abuse, while countless others share how their misfortunes have been aggravated by what appears to be an endless waiting for a ticket back home. "It is unfortunate that the measly funding that we have for repatriation and assistance are intended only for legal OFWs. Other OFWs must not be marginalized on account of being undocumented. Filipino silang lahat, kaya kailangang tulungan [They are all Filipinos, so we should help them.]," Villar said. He noted that in the DFA budget, the combined sum of the Assistance to Nationals and the Legal Assistance

distortion, the rest (3 million) will also benefit," Lagunzad said. However, TUCP's Aguilar said the 2.7 million to 5.7 million expected beneficiaries in minimum wage hikes comprise only a small portion of the Philippine labor force of 36 million. Of the 36 million, 33 million are employed; 2.8 million are unemployed. A business leader, meantime, said businessmen would be more amenable to granting wage increases if high power costs or high transport costs can be brought down. Meneleo Carlos, an official of the Federation of Philippine Industries, told abs-cbnNEWS.com/ Newsbreak, he cannot in conscience not agree with a wage increase since prices of nearly all commodities are going up. "It's impossible for us not to agree to a wage increase. But for us to comply, for us not to close shop, the government should do away with smuggling. It should cut power costs. If these are done, we will survive, even with a wage increase," Carlos said. Carlos said removing smuggling would help businessmen in a big way since it would eliminate unfair trade. "Just remove smuggling and we'll be prosperous," he said. "And bring down power rates, so we can help our workers," he said.

Fund, two items used for OFW repatriation, is P66 million. Villar has filed Senate Bill 2231, that seeks to cover both documented and undocumented OFWs in the assistance program of the government. Villar said it also adds a special mechanism to alleviate the plight of undocumented OFWs and overseas Filipinos in distress by creating a P1billion Special Fund that can be used for repatriation; medical expenses, hospitalization and purchase of medicine in the form of vouchers for six months from arrival; migration fees for overstaying Filipinos.

Cosme's toll: 13 dead, 2 missing TROPICAL storm "Cosme" (international code name Halong) has blown out of the country, leaving 13 dead and thousands without power or vital communication lines, the civil defence office said yesterday. As of early yesterday, the storm was barrelling towards Okinawa, Japan with sustained winds of 95 kilometers (58.9 miles) an hour near the centre and gusts of up to 120 kilometers (74 miles) an hour. Thirteen people were reported killed, according to the latest toll, while two others were missing after the storm brought heavy rains, flooding and landslides as it cut across northern Luzon island at the weekend.

China mourns over quake deaths DUJIANGYAN, China: From the heart of Beijing to the devastated southwest, China came to a standstill Monday, May 19 to mourn its earthquake victims as the number of dead, missing or buried soared past 71,000. Air sirens wailed across the country as most motorists stopped and blared their horns, bringing an eerie halt to China's usually bustling big cities for three minutes from 2:28 p.m. (0628 GMT), the moment the quake struck a week earlier.

China Leader Makes Debut in Great Wall of Facebook By EDWARD WONG

BEIJING - Chinese leaders are not known for making themselves available to the public, even since the Internet opened the door to governments around the world. But Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has jumped into the online social networking world with a page on Facebook, one of the most popular sites of its kind. As of early Wednesday, the page had about 13,000 "supporters." It reflects the

Thousands of people, many university students, converged on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, holding up flags and chanting slogans of support for the victims, while trading was halted on China's stock markets. The crowd at Tiananmen shouted: "Jia you! Jia you!," an exhortation loosely translated as "Go! Go!," while punching the air with their fists. In the devastated town of Dujiangyan, 60 relatives of dead children held candles and incense at one of the thousands of flattened schools. In solemn scenes on state television, Chinese soldiers earlier raised the national flag at Tiananmen Square and then lowered it to halfmast. The official grieving came as mudslides and a fresh aftershock hampered the relief efforts, even as two survivors were pulled out after a week under the rubble. The transport ministry reported that mudslides had buried more than

booming popularity of Mr. Wen, also known as "Grandpa Wen," who flew to Sichuan Province hours after the May 12 earthquake there and traveled through the hardest-hit towns, expressing sympathy to victims all the way. He became the face of China's grief. The page appears to have been set up recently. It is not clear whether Mr. Wen, 65, did it himself. Perhaps another government official put it up, or, just as likely, someone with no ties to Mr. Wen. It bears a portrait of Mr. Wen in a gray suit, his lips set in what could be either a slight grin or a slight grimace. The page offers a few bits of biographical information: His interests are Chinese literature and baseball, and his employer is the Central Government of the People. More than 500 people have written on Mr. Wen’s Facebook "wall," in Chinese and English. The page does not have popular Facebook applications like Scrabulous, Cities I've Visited and Shelfari Books, but what it

200 relief workers over the past several days. The government last week estimated more than 50,000 people died in the May 12 quake-measuring 8.0 on the Richter scalethat reduced entire towns to heaps of steel and concrete. But that number looked to be a huge underestimate with the Communist Party chief of worst-hit Sichuan saying that, as of late Sunday, 32,173 people had been confirmed killed there. Another 9,509 people were buried and 29,418 others missing, Liu Qibao said, according to Xinhua, bringing the overall figure to 71,100. It has triggered an outpouring of emotion in the rapidly developing country of 1.3 billion people, with thousands offering to volunteer or using the Internet to send condolences. Others have offered to care for children made orphans in the disaster. The official China News Service said the mourning was unprecedented for a national disaster in the world's most populous country. Even the relay of the Beijing Olympic torch, which has elicited strong excitement across China in the run-up to the Games in August, was called off for three days as a mark of respect. The five-star red flag was also at half-staff in the Chinese territory of Hong Kong and at Chinese embassies overseas, according to state media. The government pulled entertainment programs off television for three days.

lacks in technical pizazz it makes up for in emotional reach. It has a video showing horrific scenes from the earthquake playing beneath a mournful pop song. It has a photo of Mr. Wen holding up a schoolchild's dusty backpack and white sneaker while atop rubble, and one of him crouching and looking at rescue workers digging in a hole. It also has photos from playful times, like ones of him wearing a baseball uniform and catching a ball with a mitt. The vast majority of supporters appear to be Chinese living overseas, from Taiwan to Vancouver to Milwaukee. The remark most often inscribed on his wall is "Zhongguo jia you!" ("Go China!"). Timothy Lin of Singapore wrote, "Great leaders like PM Wen are hard to come by," while Edmond Ip of Hong Kong wrote, "Wen Jiabao is like a kind grandpa to me (smiley face)." Mr. Wen is one of hundreds of politicians with Facebook pages. A feature called Browse the Politicians ranks those leaders (dead and alive) by the number of supporters their pages have. At last look, Mr. Wen was 12th, lagging behind luminaries like Barack Obama (the leader, with more than 861,000 fans) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (nearly 21,000). But Mr. Wen was well ahead of Hugo Chavez, Princess Diana and Ronald Reagan.

Pinoy parents board plane, leave toddler OTTAWA: Tickets, check. Passports, check. Luggage, check. Baby . . . oops. A family boarded a flight on Monday in westernmost Canada, and forgot their tot at the Vancouver international airport, media said Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila). The 23-month-old boy's family had just arrived in Canada from the Philippines, but they were forced to repack their overweight bags before catching a connecting flight to Winnipeg, causing them to run late. In their sprint to the gate, the family became separated. The boy's father Jun Parreno, told local media he had thought his son was with his wife and the boy's grandparents, who ran ahead. They thought the boy was with his dad. On the plane, the family members were seated separately and so did not immediately realize they had left the child behind. Later, a security guard found the boy, who speaks no English, wandering near the departure gate, and Air Canada officials tracked down his shocked parents on the flight. Because the boy was so young, he was not issued a boarding pass and would have sat on a parent’s lap during the flight, so airline personnel did not notice a passenger was missing. According to the Vancouver Sun, airport security found a Tagalogspeaking Air Canada agent who looked after the child while his father flew 2,300 kilometers back to Vancouver to pick him up and then return to Winnipeg to rejoin the immigrant family on their first day in Canada. The baby was kept in Air Canada's offices and staff found him some toys, said local media. "Air Canada took good care of him," Parreno told the daily Winnipeg Free Press upon arrival. "I'm grateful."--AFP

Woman dies after life spent in iron lung MEMPHIS, Tennessee (AP) - For almost 60 years, Dianne Odell lived inside a 7-footlong metal tube, unable to breathe outside it but determined not to let it destroy her spirit. From her 750-pound iron lung, she got a high school diploma, took college courses and wrote a children's book about a "wishing star" named Blinky. "I've had a very good life, filled with love and family and faith," she said in 1994. "You can make life good, or you can make it bad." Odell, 61, died Wednesday when a power failure shut off electricity to the tube and stopped the pump drawing air into her lungs. Odell was afflicted with "bulbo-spinal" polio three years before a polio vaccine was discovered and largely stopped the spread of the crippling childhood disease.

Pinoys warned of Korea drive vs mail-order brides A husband married to his wife of 30 years, never saw her face. Saudi Arabia - An Arab husband in Khamis Mushayt, a city in southwestern Saudi Arabia was divorced by his wife of 30 years for attempting to see her face. The city is known for its very conservative tradition and with women who wears abaya for their traditional clothing and never shows their face except the eyes unlike in other cities where women can take off their veils and nigabs (a face veil covering all but eyes) when they are at home. The wife who had never showed her face to her husband ever since they started to be a couple and had children, chose to keep her tradition of covering her face and not exposing it to anyone even to her own family by ending her marriage through divorce. The husband is so anxious to know and see what his wife looks like, for all these years together, finally not able to resist his curiosity that he attempted to remove her veil while she was sleeping and was provoked for a devorce. Can you imagine... not showing your face to your love ones...? Have you ever had such determination in your live?

Filipinos are advised against agencies acting as fronts for mail order brides following reports that the South Korean government is set to crack down on inter-racial matchmaking agencies that violate local laws and use deceptive advertising. The Philippine Embassy in Seoul reminded the public of Republic Act 6955 or the AntiMail-Order Bride Law, which makes it illegal for a "person, natural or juridical, association, club or any other entity" to "establish or carry on a business which has for its purpose the matching of Filipino women for marriage to foreign nationals either on a mail order basis or through personal introduction." The law also makes it illegal for anyone "to advertise, publish, print or distribute or cause the advertisement, publication, printing or distribution of any brochure, flier, or any propaganda material calculated to promote the prohibited acts" earlier mentioned. Further amendments include its applicability to mail order bride schemes using "e-mail or websites in the Internet." While matchmaking agencies are considered legal in South Korea, Philippine Ambassador to Seoul Luis Cruz said yesterday that Korean law requires these agencies to be registered and to be aware of issues concerning inter-racial marriages and ethics. "A number of Filipinos enter South Korea through marriages arranged through these matchmakers. Many are lured by promises of work or a better life," Cruz said. As of Jan. 31 this year, some 5,000 Filipinos married to South Koreans reside in the peninsula. Some of them met their respective spouses through matchmaking agencies.

Finland welcomes RP nurses, other health workers THE Finnish government welcomes the proposal of the Philippine government for the possible deployment of more Filipino nurses and other healthcare professionals to work in Finland. Maria Zeneida A. Collinson, Philippine ambassador to Sweden, reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that discussions held on the Philippine readiness to help alleviate the critical shortage of nurses and other healthcare professonals in this country went well. Finland is expected to among the first European countries to experience a demographic shock as some 900,000 of its "baby boom" generation reach retirement age within the next 12 years. With insufficient birth rates to offset the country's rapidly aging population, the ensuing decline in the working-age population is predicted to lead to rising pensions and deteriorating healthcare services. In her visit held April 16 to 18, Collinson met with Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb, Minister of Employment and the Economy Tarja Cronberg and several other high ranking officials responsible for health care and migration. Last year, Collinson first started discussions on the entry of Filipino healthcare professionals to Finland. Aside from initial training and Finnish lessons in the Philippines, the group will be given further training leading to becoming a competent practical nurse in Finland.

Varicose veins Varicose veins are genetic and more common among females than males. Because during pregnancy the rise in female hormones weakens blood vessels and the women's weight gain puts more pressure on the veins. Fortunately, there are procedures for removing unsightly veins. A medical non-surgical procedure called Sclerotherapy uses a chemical solution injected into the veins causing varicose and spider veins to collapse. Larger veins can be removed surgically by Ambulatory Phlebectomy, an outpatient method, where veins are removed using

hooks thru tiny incisions on the skin. Scars are barely visible, sometimes without the need of stitches. The body compensates by rerouting blood to other normal blood vessels. In another procedure called closure, a catheter is inserted into the damaged vein and heated with a Radiofrequency or a Laser. This causes the walls of the vein to collapse and seal off. If you're not ready for surgery or you just want to prevent varicose veins from developing, these tips will help: Lose weight. Extra pounds put pressure on

the veins. Wear medical grade support socks and hose. They can relieve aching veins and prevent further damage and swelling. Wear lose-fitting clothes. Don't cross your legs. Get up and take a break. Take a break from sitting every half hour. Walk at least half an hour a day. Drink plenty of water. This keeps blood thin and prevents it from clotting. Omega-3 carrier key to boosting children's attention: study 15-May-2008 - Esterified omega-3 fatty acids may improve the attention scores for children, says a new study from France and Israel's Enzymotec that appears to highlight the importance of the omega-3 carrier. Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids in the phospholipid form resulted in changes to children's fatty acid profile and an increase in Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) scores amongst children with impaired attention performance participating in the randomised double-blind clinical trial. "To the best of our knowledge, the randomised controlled trial presented herein is the first short-term intervention study with omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) to show a correlation between these biochemical and cognitive function outcomes," wrote the authors in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The researchers, led by Jacques Bodennec from the University of Lyon 1 (UMR CNRS 5123), add that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids in the triacylglycerol form produced different fatty acid profiles and different results. In terms of TOVA scores, improvements were significantly less than observed in children supplemented with the phospholipid form. A number of studies have reported similar results and this led to calls by some for omega-3 supplementation of school children. Indeed, the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) last year reviewed the science in this field but ultimately decided against

such measures, stating the evidence was insufficient. In many cases these studies were said to lack quality in research methodology and reporting, and failed to account for confounders. But studies like the new randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, supported financially by Enzymotec, could lead to a rethink in this stance.

Study details Bodennec and co-workers recruited 60 children aged eight to 13 and randomly assigned them to receive daily supplements of 250 mg per day of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) esterified to phospholipid omega-3 (300 mg/d phosphatidylserine, Enzymotec) or as triacylglycerol (fish oil, Ocean Nutrition), or placebo for three months. All of the children were diagnoses with Increases in levels of EPA, docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and DHA were observed in the phospolipid part of the blood, increases of 1.5-2.2 fold, 1.2-fold, and 1.3-fold respectively, in both fish oil and phosphatidylserine groups. In red blood cells (erythrocytes) only supplementation with the phospholipid omega-3 produced significant 30 per cent reductions in levels of very-long-chain saturated fatty acids. This was accompanied by 1.2and 2.2-fold increases in linoleic acid and DPA, respectively, report the researchers.

good diet can help your body better deal with the effects of stress.

In terms of attention measures, both omega-3 supplemented groups produced increased in TOVA scores, with an increase of 94 per cent in the PL-omega-3 group and 37 per cent in the fish oil group. No changes were observed in the placebo group, added the researchers. "Our findings suggest that providing preparations with a high EPA/DHA ratio could affect visual sustained attention performance, even at subgram amounts, in pediatric populations," wrote Bodennec and coworkers. "A better understanding of the physiology of omega-3 LC-PUFAs and the role of their carriers throughout the metabolic process in children with omega-3 LCPUFA deficiency could place the results of the current investigation in clearer context. "In the meantime, these observations could assist in planning future trials of the role of omega-3 LCPUFA carriers in psychiatric as well as in healthy pediatric populations," they concluded. MENOPAUSE Some women continue to menstruate normally until the onset of menopause and then simply cease to have periods. But for most women, the transition is not so orderly. You can expect to see a variety of changes. What they are and why they happen is the subject of the discussion that follows. Under other headings, you'll find more on the symptoms and management of the most troubling of these problems. * Changing Hormonal Patterns * Changes in the Menstrual Cycle * Muscle Tone and Elasticity * Hair, Bones, and Teeth Changing Hormonal Patterns A woman's egg supply, as much as 2 million in the ovaries at birth, is programmed for depletion. When the supply is almost exhausted because of the aging process, or the ovaries are surgically removed, the menstrual cycle comes to an end. In fact, the reproductive cycle begins to change several years before menopause, a period referred to as perimenopause. During this time, typically starting in the late 40's, the ovaries' response to the various stimulating hormones produced by the brain becomes unsynchronized, until eventually the aging ovaries fail to respond at all. They start to produce less progesterone, losing their ability to ovulate and develop the subsequent corpus luteum. When ovulation stops, estrogen levels decline and menstruation ceases. As ovulatory cycles become more irregular throughout perimenopause,

For booking, please call 8208-8847 the body's sensitive hormonal rhythm is thrown off and menstruation may vary more from month to month. In addition, two hormones known as androgens begin to play a bigger role. Though referred to as male sex hormones, they are in fact produced in small amounts by the female body as well. As levels of the female hormones decline, the impact of these "male" hormones can increase. The bottom line is that fluctuating blood levels of hormones during the transitional years can create a number of physiological changes. These may be less unsettling for women who have an understanding of what their bodies are going through.

The

wide array of problems shown in this diagram may seem daunting; but fortunately, few women experience every one of them. Hot flashes are the most common complaint. However, these annoying sensations pass in due course, while other symptoms may pose a much greater long-term threat. Be particularly alert for lower back pain, which may signal the onset of osteoporosis, the bone-weakening disorder that leaves older women prey to fractures. Remember, too, that menopause robs you of estrogen's protective effect on the heart, and that heart disease is the Number One killer of women.

Changes in the Menstrual Cycle Cyclical Changes occur for the vast majority of women whose periods do not just stop. The perimenopausal years may be marked by skipped menstrual periods, heavier or lighter than usual bleeding, and changes in the frequency of cycles. During some menstrual cycles, no egg may be produced; these are called anovulatory cycles Light, short, or skipped periods occur as the ovaries' hormonal response becomes unpredictable. Heavy and prolonged bleeding arise when a longer than normal release of estrogen overstimulates growth of the uterine lining. The lining may be irregular or

thickened and may not slough off completely or evenly, causing menstruation to stop and start again. Clotting may be noticeable in menstrual bleeding. The physical changes that accompany the menstrual cycle may also become less predictable and regular. Such signs as breast tenderness, fluid retention and headache may occur at unpredictable times. Fertility declines as a woman enters her 40s, but it does not disappear entirely until menopause is complete. MORE ON NEXT ISSUE...

KABAYAN Makati, kagabi, May 14.

"We were affected, of course. But yesterday [May 13], they actually talked about it and they talked a little bit more and little bit more. So hopefully, things have worked out a little bit better. The tension has lessened a little bit more. So, that's okay and both of our families are in good terms," saad ni Vince. WEDDING GIFT. Ayon sa ama ni Vince, in a separate interview with PEP, nagbigay siya sa anak ng certain amount of money para sa kasal nila ni Inah. Malaking halaga ba ang hiningi ni Vince sa daddy niya? "Oh, just enough money so

that we will have a nice wedding," nakangiting sagot niya. "Of course, since she [Inah] is the girl, I wanted her to have the wedding she wanted especially since she's very young. I know that girls always dream about a perfect wedding. Of course, as my wife, I wanted her to have that because it's only once that it will happen to her life." Aabot ba ng P10 million ang gastos nila sa kasal? "Ah, no, no. The wedding is not more than that. The condo he gave us is around P10 million."

"It's around P2.5 million," sagot niya. Masasabi ba ni Vince na dream wedding din ito para sa kanya? "Yeah, actually. For me I just wanted a small wedding. But this is good. I'm very happy." NOT CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS. Napagalaman namin sa ama ni Vince na hindi pala sila childhood sweethearts ni Inah gaya nung unang lumabas.

Geneva indirectly answered, "You know, we have problems, of course, siyempre we're away from each other, it's difficult." Later during the interview, Geneva was asked to rate her relationship with former SOP host from one to ten, 10 being the happiest.

Singer-actress Geneva Cruz celebrated Mother's Day yesterday, May 11, alone. Her second husband KC Montero, and her son (Heaven) with former Introvoyz band member Paco Arespacochaga, are in Seattle, Washington. "Pinipigilan ko lang na malungkot talaga," Geneva told Showbiz Central's Central Jury. "Pero deep inside siyempre malungkot ako dahil first time na hindi kami magksama. Sabi ko nga sa mga friends ko, ‘Take me out. You guys have to take me out.'" Last year, Geneva settled in the U.S. with KC Montero and Heaven. In fact, one of the reasons for this decision was to give a better a future to Heaven, who was also interested in migrating to the U.S.

However, earlier this year, Geneva surprised everybody when she came back without KC and Heaven. Speculation immediately arose that something must be wrong with their relationship. Although Geneva had already denied this rumor before, she said once again before the Central Jury, Rufa Mae Quinto and DJ Mo Twister, "Well, hindi pa naman [kami hiwalay]. Nakakatawa lang talaga." (Click here to read related article) Rufa Mae asked, "E, bakit hindi pa mamatay-matay?" Geneva answered, "I don't know, you know, I mean, kapag nasa relationship ka hindi naman yun madaling... palaging maayos or palaging kayong masaya, palagi kayong walang problema. Siyempre may level talaga na parang may earthquake." Mo got intrigued by

Geneva thought for a moment before answering, "Six." She added, "Right now, he knows that I'm kinda upset. You know, like sinasabi ko nga, hindi naman madali yung relationship, but we're happy. Depende rin naman sa'yo 'yan. I mean, kung ako, masayahing tao ako, kahit may problema ako, masaya ako." What upsets her? Geneva answered obliquely. "No, I'm just... You know, when you're in a relationship and someone doesn't answer the phone, you know, when you try to call. Hindi siya sumasagot, and then, ganun din siya sa akin. Like, sometimes I forget my phone or walang charger, so he gets upset din." SUGAR MOMMY? DJ Mo also pointed out an issue that allegedly caused the rumored breakup between Geneva and KC Montero. DJ Mo addressed the singer, "Isa raw ang big problem dito sa relationship ninyo is money. Ikaw lang daw ang nagsu-support kina KC and Heaven?" Geneva laughed out loud. "Oh, my gosh, ganun ba yun? Sugar mommy ako? Grabe! "That is ridiculous. No way!

"Opo, I only came here [in the Philippines] about a year and a half ago. We met through our families." Bakit lumabas na he and Inah are childhood sweethearts? "Oh, that I don't know. I'm not really sure," sagot niya. "I grew up in the Staes with my mom. But I was born here. But I stayed in the States most of my life, actually. I come here once in a while. But now, I may not go to the States for a long time." When was the first time na nagkita sila ni Inah?

What about the wedding?

Geneva's answer, so he threw in a follow up question. He asked the former member of the singing group Smoke Mountain, "So, you can say right now na medyo malabo kayo right now?"

THE KILLER QUESTION. Like the past interviews by the Central Jury, the session with Geneva ended with the "Killer Question." After silently reading the killer question, Rufa Mae and DJ Mo asked Geneva if she wanted to reveal it or seal it. The singer confidently replied, "Nakakatawa, hindi man lang mahirap sagutin. "We wanted to, of course," sagot ni Vince. "But we love each other so much, so it's not only just because of the baby that we're getting married. Of course, we're facing it around God, so yeah." What does he wish about their wedding? "Something that will last. Me and Inah have a different kind of relationship. I've never really experienced it before. This is my first time...like I love her. And I've never really loved a person as much that I have decided to get married. When I decided to marry Inah, I never had any doubt," said ni Vince. halos mawala ang respeto mo sa kanya. Totoo bang nagkaroon ng relasyon si Paco sa yaya noon ni Heaven?" Geneva answered the question easily. "Ano ba yun? Galit na galit nga noon si Paco sa isang yaya ni Heaven dahil pinupukpok siya ng tabo pala, hindi namin alam. Heaven told me about it siguro nung malaki-laki na siya. He told me, 'My yaya used to hit me with a tabo.' At saka nagdadala ng boyfriend sa bahay. Kapag wala kami, sinusuot niya yung mga lingerie ko. I'm not kidding, this is very funny!"

Miss Linda Alorro has been working for fifteen (15) years in her present employer. She used to take care of two (2) children who are now grown-ups before she became a companion of her employer's eightyfive (85) years old mother. According to Linda, maintaining one employer for fifteen (15) years is not simple at all. "There were many times that I felt bored and I wanted to quit because of my daily routine", Miss Alorro said. Aside from the reason stated, Linda has freely conferred her story during an interview with Kabayan STAR. She is happy to impart her experience, joy and realization to her fellowOFWs as domestic helper in Hong Kong for fifteen (15) years. "It is Patience and Love with prayers that has made me enjoy my job. And I am recommending these virtues to everyone most especially the young ones and the new comers. No work is easy without love and patience for a worker to enjoy her/his work," she said. Miss Alorro mentioned that when she was still six (6) years working in Hong Kong, she has always been asked if her employer is good and some had and are guessing that her employers are perfect. She wants to

inform everyone that as far as human is concern there is no such as perfect employer; nevertheless, we can work it out. "At hindi ito dapat one sided, hindi lang ang employer ang dapat maging mabait dapat mas matimbang ang adjustment na manggagaling sa atin," Linda said. On Sundays and on her holidays, the grandmother follows her to church. "She has been my companion for 3 years, she’s eighty-five (85) but she's strong and very brave. In the very first year that I attended to her needs, it was a new adjustment for me as a part of the new nature of my job. To be honest with you she was very moody and of course I had that feeling of giving-up again. However, I did not allow my negative feeling rule over my plans and decision, I continued. And I'm very proud to inform you that after she has been attending El Shaddai with me for several months at Sai Kung, I've seen a big change in her. She is enjoying, she dances and sings too and I'm proud and happy for her", Linda Alorro ended. Linda is very happy because her Love and Patience has progressed since she started working as domestic helper in Hong Kong.

HOW TO DEAL WITH FAMILY PRESSURE You have started writing your budget and tracking all your expenses. But the biggest amount is out of your control: the money your family keeps asking every month, or sometimes more often. And with the higher peso, the remittance seems to get bigger every month. How will you be able to pay for your child’s college if you never manage to save for it now? In all the courses I have been teaching, the money sent to the family is a recurring issue which is not always easy to talk of or tackle. Money is much more than numbers: it conveys lots of emotions, and it is often difficult to discuss calmly about money with your family over the phone... especially as you try to reduce your phone bill at the same time. You feel obliged to send money, and guilty at the same time to be away from them, and all the Filipinas and Filipinos I have met are very generous and don't know how to say "no". The first step is to take feelings out of money discussions. Not easy, but save the feelings to discuss other matters with your spouse or children. On money discussion, get facts: ask the family members you support to track their expenses, the same way as you track your own expenses. Make it a clear deal with your family: you will only send your hard won money to

them if they can tell you exactly what they spend the money on. Teach your family all the tips you have been learning in this column: the different types of expenses, how to write a budget, divide the income in envelopes (for transportation, food, school, etc… ), how to get out of debt...

if you have an email account, this will be less expensive to email a few spreadsheets with numbers, than have a long and expensive phone discussion which ends up with frustration from both parts?

By sharing numbers and talking about facts, your family will be able to gradually understand the other needs you have to pay for in Hong Kong. If you are the Your family might also only breadwinner underestimate how and your family expensive it is to live are the in Hong Kong. Then Once your budget is done, agree on a monthly amount both your family and you that you send once a month should track your expenses and that your family has to and check if you are really manage. Stop sending money following your budget and start getting out of debt and whenever they ask for it. That is the best way they can learn saving for your goals, whether it is your children’s to make the best use of money and set priorities... the same college or your retirement. way you have to wait for your monthly salary. They should If you find it too difficult to not think that they can ask discuss about money, why whatever they want. In your don't you write to your family budget, don't forget to family instead? Why not include saving for emergency, send them a budget even if it is very small. Find spreadsheet for them to fill ways to check what the in with pieces of advice? Or

money you send is really used for. If you have to pay for school fees, why don't you send the fee directly to the school and ask for a receipt? Keep control on your saving too: leave them under your name in Hong Kong. Learn to say "no". Especially if you have debts, you cannot send money to your family. Get out of debt first. You cannot give what you don't have. Secure your financial position before you can help others. Prioritise also the people you want to help: you cannot help everybody. When you write your budget, calculate who you can help... and say no to the others. Once again, no guilty feeling, just facts: with one Hong Kong Domestic Helper salary, you cannot support several families! Be clear on what you really want: help a remote cousin or save money for your own children's education and your retirement. WISE PEOPLE COMMUNICATE I want to help you moms and dads who work in Hong Kong communicate better with loved ones back home. Let me say this: Moms and Dads you have a great opportunity to help your children and loved ones back home despite the distance. As I write this line, my thought is with how Jesus and his Father communicated. Despite their distance, they maintained loving communication! (I am referring of course to the difference in their modes of existence - physically and spiritually). Good communication is costly. By the time this issue is published, one of my daughters would be in the Philippines for college. Emma and I have invested a lot to enable us to communicate more closely. Thank God for phones, mail system, the Internet and affordable airfare. More importantly, we thank the Lord for the relationship that we have built with our daughter. What does good long distance family communication look like? First, a good family communication is based on an established loving relationship between moms, dads, children, parents, friends, relatives and anyone you seek to communicate. Effective parental and marital communications do not happen in a vacuum. It takes place where a relationship of love and respect has already been established. Read that again please, "where a healthy, good relationship has already been established". This means that a wife who leaves her husband to work in Hong Kong must have a well-established relationship with her spouse. Otherwise that marriage relationship will not be as strong as it should be to "invasions" and "intrusions" from foreign elements. The same applies

to parents and their children, or children to their parents.

The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Chinese man hands over the keys to a new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank. He produces the title and everything checks out. The Loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the Chinese for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral against a $5,000

Two weeks later, the Chinese returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multi-millionaire. What puzzles us is why you would bother to borrow $5,000. The Chinese replies: "Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there safely when I return."

Hi! KabayanSTAR, How are you doing? I'm here again though far from HK. I haven't got a copy of the May issue because I'm here in Canada already, but...one of my aunt got a copy, read my poem and article...and then grab the phone called my mom who is working in Kowloon Tong and asked if i am using my maiden name...funny, isn't? It's true, she couldn't believe that I can compose a poem nor write an article. Well, I love her...so here I am again sharing my passion and love in writing... Hoping that you can spare a bit of space for my poem for the upcoming issue... Thanks and keep up the good work! Good luck and more blessings.

THANKS TO YOU By: jhoan gorospe U gave me hope... When I thought I'm lost U showed me love... When there is no one to I thank u... For accepting who I am I thank u... For being part of my life I never realized That I have someone... Someone who knows to care Knows to understand To comfort and love... The reason why I thank God That you are my Father! HAPPY FATHER'S DAY , DAD! (This poem is lovingly dedicated to my father, SALVADOR GOROSPE. Thanks Dad for everything!)

monthly horoscope Jokes Aries Mar 21-Apr 20 You are likely to be in a deeply reflective and serious mood today, thanks to minor influences. Unusually for an Aries, you may find that your thoughts will tend to gravitate towards the negative. However, this glass-half-empty approach may actually prove to be quite constructive.

Taurus Apr 21-MAY 21 Try and ease up today; taxing aspects indicate that you will be inclined to set the bar high, which will only lead to unnecessary stress! A flexible approach will ease the self- inflicted pressure. Go with the flow in order to get the most from a complicated development at work or school!

Gemini May 22-Jun 21 If yesterday was slightly confrontational, then today you may be inclined to kick back too much. This will be great for relationships, but not for work. Don't let others do all the work! You'll be well advised to keep your finger on the pulse throughout the day, so that you don? find yourself trying to catch up tomorrow!

Cancer Jun 22-Jul 22 Minor but ultimately useful aspects move in; extravagant mood will reverse into a rather withdrawn one. Spending time with friends, visiting the mall, and planning an evening out are activities that would normally appeal, but won't today. However, having time and space will assist an important decision!

Leo

Jul 23-Aug 22

A grass that is greener elsewhere won't help a distinct slump in your mood approach today. If you feel uninspired or a little jaded then step back for a moment to appreciate what you have got! When the evening brings a little bonus you'll feel a lot happier!

Virgo Aug 23- Sep 23 Thanks to niggling influences you are likely to be pulled in two directions today. Whether you stick with the safe, reliable option, or go for something that involves a little more nerve should be your decision! Well, meaning advice might not be as helpful as you wish!

Libra Sep 24- Oct 23 Being prepared and being efficient will be your biggest strength today, because communications look pretty unreliable. Brace yourself for errors, delays and mix-ups! Double check your texts and your emails, and if you have to rely on others, make sure you follow up.

Scorpio Oct 24- Nov 22 The planets shape another tricky day today, as a work or school related issue could take on rather challenging proportions. It may even feel as though you take over-investing in one area, or that you are wasting time! Keep plodding away; you will find that you are actually moving in the right direction!

Sagittarius Nov 23-Dec 21 Thanks to today's planetary imbalance you may find that cash matters aren't too good. At the same time you are likely to feel the need for a much-needed treat or break from a rather inflexible matter or situation. This can be achieved without spending a dime by claiming time and space to yourself!

Capricorn Dec 22- Jan 20 A couple of obstructive planetary aspects suggest that someone, a boss, a teacher, or even an older family member, may irritate you today. Being convinced that you are in the right will be the likely source of stress, but there'll also be someone nearby who can shed light on the matter!

Aquarius Jan 21- Feb 19 Prudence and thinking before you speak are not likely to be your strongest points; unfortunately today is likely to be the day where someone shares a secret! You will be best to keep what you learn to yourself for now, because the planets indicate that the time isn't yet ripe for sharing confidential information.

Pisces Feb 20- Mar 20 This is probably the day to get yourself to the mall for that little treat, especially if you feel that a close friend isn't being sensitive or considerate today. Blame the lunar influences rather than your friend, because tomorrow will see you realizing just how great your friend is!
