RESIDENTIAL DESIGN PORTFOLIO

MORRIS RESIDENCE Casey Key, Florida Working with Guy Peterson/ OFA, DWY created a sanctuary for the senses for this Luis Barragan inspired home and garden. As such, the surrounding gardens are carefully articulated to produce a stage of sculptural elements that enrich the interconnected spaces.  The interior and exterior are united with views and access to the exterior gardens while site lines along the primary axis are extended through the home, connecting the entry fountain with the Gulf of Mexico beyond.  By creatively weaving together the various landscape elements with the geometry of the modern architecture, the garden design interplays light, sound, form and views to create a synergy between site and structure.

COURTER-HODGSON RESIDENCE Bird Key, Florida DWY Landscape Architects was commissioned to create serene garden spaces reflecting the modern architecture of this coastal residence while creating privacy from the street and open views of the pass. Silver bismarkia palms arranged in a grove provide shade and shadow on the motor court. A gated entrance reveals a courtyard and walkway that leads guests over a reflecting pool via floating steps to the pool deck beyond where a curved coconut palm articulates the tropical locale.

SHANK RESIDENCE Bird Key, Florida 2012 FLASLA Award of Merit The Bird Key Residence was purchased for the waterfront location but the existing site lacked function and failed to match the interior’s modern aesthetic. Considering the owners desire to take advantage of Florida’s temperate climate during seasonal visits, DWY re-created the exterior environment through a series of outdoor spaces designed for cooking, entertaining, dining and swimming. Defined by clean lines, water features and lighting, the new landscape is a true modern retreat.

Working with Thomas + Denzinger Architects, the goal of DWY was not only to satisfy the many program requirements as an extension of the architecture while highlighting the natural site but, moreover, to do so in a dramatic fashion. The entrance connects the property across a private road while natural Callida stone articulates the open board fenestration of the home’s exterior. Unique features of the design include use of epiphytes, acrylic windows in the bottom of the pool and a 6,000-gallon cistern.

WESTWAY SPEC HOME Lido Shores, Florida Working with the architect, DWY Landscape Architects conceived a site master plan for the Westway Spec House that was as inspired and unique as the architecture itself.  By allowing the architectural fenestration to inform the landscape and hardscape layouts, the architectural vocabulary and spirit of the landscape are united one with the other for a bold yet cohesive aesthetic.

MOTTO RESIDENCE Sarasota, Florida The Motto Residence serves as a seasonal retreat for its bi-coastal owners who have an appreciation for art and architecture. Every room in the house opens to an adjacent garden- putting the natural environment on display in an attempt to blur the line between the interior and exterior to accommodate the lifestyle and climate of south florida. The design intent was to create a landscape of private refuge for the owners while allowing the front of the house to remain connected the neighborhood. The landscape interventions transformed the neglected exterior environment into a series of interconnected spatial experiences that respect the site and blur the lines between indoors and out.
