also sows beans, peas, sunflowers and rape. For other drilling applications he has a 6-metre Kverneland Tine Seeder, also equipped with ISOBUS.

Time and accuracy The advantages of ISOBUS are becoming increasingly more important for Mr Scholz: “It is indeed just a question of plug & play. Simply plug in the machine and it will appear on the screen.” The tractor and machine combinations used by his contracting firm often change several times a day. “When all the machines are equipped with ISOBUS and work on the same terminal the start-up time is faster and you gain time. It is also much easier for the driver: it increases comfort and prevents errors.” He already has plans for expansion: “For our loader wagons we want to buy a Vicon because of the convenience of ISOBUS.” He also wants to install GPS as soon as possible. “I will then be able to get more out of my machinery and I can offer my customers a more efficient and even better service.” p

ISOBUS is the basis Tractor and machine combinations often change several times a day The ISOBUS control provides a high number of automatic functions and information, such as automatic loading and unloading, and monitors the key functions during operation on an intuitive and clearly structured screen. This adds unique support to the driver to help him stay focused during a long and busy working day, increasing output and working potential.

All ISOBUS machines produced by Kverneland Group can be recognised by the ISOBUS Intelligence logo. Whenever you see this logo on your machine, you are ensured of the ISOBUS compatibility from tractor to machine and machine to tractor, meaning that all data collection from your machine(s) is centralised and can easily

be transferred to your Terminal (e.g. IsoMatch Tellus) in your tractor cabin.

WHAT IS the role of Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF)? The AEF is an international industrial platform founded in 2008 by agricultural machinery manufacturers AGCO, Claas, CNH, Grimme, John Deere, Kverneland Group, and Pöttinger as well as the industry associations AEM and VDMA. At present, the AEF has more than 140 additional members who are committed to implementing electronic standards. The objectives of the AEF are to establish the compatibility of tractors, implements and the software used on the farm across different manufacturers and provide the agricultural public with information on the applications and the benefits of ISOBUS (www.aef-online.org). Just lately the AEF has significantly expanded their range of activities by adding new areas of responsibility: "High Voltage Electrical Drives" and "Camera and Sensor Technology".

Carsten Hühne, Product Manager & Business Development ISOBUS, Kverneland Group Deutschland GmbH:

“ISOBUS is ready for the future, are you?” The innovative power of the agricultural sector allows us to use our land more easily and efficiently. Due to ISOBUS, tractors and implements now communicate with each other using a common platform. So we make the connection of complicated electronic control systems simpler. Plug & play! Carsten Huehne takes us into the world of agriculture and ISOBUS. Besides his job at Kverneland Group, he is also project leader for communication and marketing and European spokesman of the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF).

10 Q&A

1. How will farms develop?

For simple economy of scale, farms will have to get bigger. And whilst in the past advances in mechanical engineering brought significant increases in productivity, electronics will now be the driving force.

2. How does ISOBUS relate to that?

Instead of the ‘higher, faster, wider’ solution to improve productivity, the new issues are ‘smarter and more efficient’. ISOBUS technology standardises connection and functionality which ensures compatibility between products made by different manufacturers.

3. What is ISOBUS?

ISOBUS standardizes the communication between tractors and implements. One terminal can satisfy the operational needs of a large selection of implements, regardless of the manufacturer. Plug & play. All signals, such as speed, lower link position links and power take-off RPM are available from the tractor in a standardised form for any implement.

4.

What are the advantages for the farmer? Electronics like ISOBUS increase the safety, effectiveness, precision and efficiency of agricultural equipment. And with ISOBUS you only need one terminal. Result is a more structured cabin with fewer control boxes obstructing the operators view. It also facilitates compatibility between the machinery systems and the software used on the farm.

Personal information Name: Carsten Hühne Age: 45 Favorite food: Beef carpaccio Hobby: Farming Favorite sport: Soccer

p

|

20

5.

Which functionalities does the system support? An ISOBUS functionality can be explained as a separate ‘module’ in ISOBUS. Implements such as precision drills, sprayers and spreaders for example can benefit from section control, where the GPS based application automatically switches rows or sections of the implement on or off in areas of the field which have been previously covered or indeed require no application. This saves input costs such as seed/sprays/fertiliser and improves the crop quality.

IS SM OBU AR S T ,T W HA O T’ RK S IN WH G A T

iM

6. What will be the trade-in value for non-ISO machines?

These may be valued lower as more tractors are being supplied with ISOBUS connectivity. However, simpler machines which don’t require ISOBUS electronics will still have a future in the market.

7. Can tractors and implements be upgraded to ISOBUS? Theoretically yes. Retrofitting implements can be a complex task due to the number of sensors and

electronics required and therefore not always economical. However tractors are not a problem; Retrofit/ upgrade kits are already available such as the IsoMatch Tellus for non-ISO tractors.

8. What is the role of AEF in promoting ISOBUS?

One of our targets is to define AEF terminology which describes the functionalities available on the specific ISOBUS tractor or implement. Another target is a new certification which clearly states the conformance, functionality and compatibility of the tractor/machine combination. For the future the information will be published on the AEF ISOBUS Database.

9. What is the advantage of the IsoMatch Tellus?

The IsoMatch Tellus is the second generation of ISOBUS universal terminals, produced by Kverneland Group. It is not only because of its two displays that it is regarded as one of the most innovative terminals on the market. It offers a wide range of applications and features, for example GEOcontrol and section control, which offer the user extended benefits from the universal terminal.

10. Finally, what do you see in the future for ISOBUS?

The standard will undergo an evolutionary process. The ‘BUS’ has to become more efficient, faster and able to transport more data more quickly. And of course new technological developments, like high voltage electrical drives, will open new perspectives when combined with ISOBUS control systems. Just imagine tractors without axles propelled by independent wheel motors, like the Rigitrac, presented at Agritechnica 2011.

“You drive once round the edges of the plot to mark the boundary and then all you do is drive,” explains Fluks to indicate how easy GEOspread works.

were my minimum requirements. That is how I quickly arrived at the Vicon spreader.” Because, according to him, both the weighing system and the spread pattern of Vicon are undisputedly at the top of the list in terms of quality and reliability. He also decided to opt for GEOspread. “Precision farming certainly has potential for the future. My experience is that it really works magnificently,” says Fluks enthusiastically, whereas initially he was sceptical about electronic applications. “I was wary of failures, but in practice there are none. The only thing is that you have to be careful cleaning around the main junction box of the spreader with the high-pressure cleaner because the electronics are too sensitive for that.” During the commissioning, Kverneland Benelux and the Vicon dealer guaranteed the service and support. “For me, that was the final push that I needed.” p

The combination of IsoMatch GEOcontrol and the Vicon RotaFlow fertiliser

115 hectares of arable land

spreader with GEOspread has led to significant savings on Jan de Wit’s farm.

Mainly potatoes, grain and sugar beet Vicon RO-EDW GEOspread spreader

“Before I used GEOspread, when making my fertilisation plan, I could estimate well how much fertiliser I need but of course I got overlaps.” The advantages of the IsoMatch Tellus, IsoMatch GEOcontrol and GEOspread enable Jan to do it more efficiently now. The amount of fertiliser loaded into the spreader and the GPS allow him to save on fertiliser and get the work done more easily. “The main savings I get are from the automatic section control which allows me to have less overlap especially on triangles. I save at least 6% on costs by using GEOspread and IsoMatch GEOcontrol. Normally I needed to hire an extra employee for the required work, now I save one employee salary. I can also work at any moment of the day or even in the dark. It is just easy and clear how to operate it.”
