Parent’s Guide to Swim Lessons: • Arrive early to familiarize your child with the Kroc pool. • Have your child shower to remove any lotions, soaps or perfumes prior to entering the pool. • Lifeguards are the final authority on rules and regulations in the pool area. • Do not use the pool if you’ve shown any signs of illness or diarrhea the past 24 hours. • Kids under 3 years must wear a swim diaper. • No shoes or food/drink. All pool rules apply. • Class levels are frequently repeated to allow students to master skills and feel successful before moving on to a new level. Patience is the key to learning how to swim. • Classes with low attendance (2 or less) will be cut by 15 minutes for that day. • Participants can be dropped off 10 minutes prior to class. • Participants must be picked up immediately following class.

Kroc Aquatics

Meet Some of the People Who Love Our Aquatics Center! The Kroc Center Features Award-Winning Lifeguard Training as Well as a Personal Approach to Fitness and Swimming Lessons.

A

s the seasons change and cooler weather makes itself at home in the Midwest, swimming is often the last thing on one’s mind. But, thanks to our indoor aquatic facility, Kroc members don’t bat an eye when they take to the water in the winter months. But the Kroc Aquatics Center is more than just a place to enjoy a leisurely swim. For some, it’s a place to maintain great health. For others, it’s a place to learn proper techniques for swimming and water safety. And, it can also be the launching point for a career in the aquatics profession. Jan Koester is a retired teacher and a Charter Member of the Kroc, having signed up for her membership when the Kroc Center opened its doors in September of 2011. After retirement, Jan knew that she wanted a place to go to “keep [herself] active, healthy, and to be able to socialize.” She says that after her initial visit to the Kroc Center, she “fell in love with the great facility, awesome classes, instructors and staff.” It was the overall experience during that visit that got her “hooked”. After she suffered an injury following a fall, Jan’s doctor recommended taking aquatic classes. She enrolled in Upstream, a medium-hard difficulty level class that promotes increased mobility, balance, strength and cardio endurance using a variety of fun and challenging methods. 14

Winter / Spring 2017

|

Upstream proved to be a breeze for Jan, and she quickly graduated to more advanced aquatic programs including River Extreme, Hydro, Aqua Zumba, and her favorite, Kroc-Logix, which focuses on high-energy lowimpact resistance training. Besides regaining her mobility from the injury, Jan also reaped multiple other benefits from her enrollment in aquatic fitness. “I have lost weight, firmed my body, and most of all, my blood pressure has lowered and my blood work is amazing,” she offers. “My good and bad cholesterol are doing what they’re supposed to be doing, and I feel so much better after exercising!” she exclaims. And Jan is not the only one noticing the differences in her physical appearance and demeanor. She says her family and friends have noticed, too. “My friends have seen how becoming active has helped me, so they decided they were willing to give it a try, too!” she says proudly. Other Charter Members are still enjoying Kroc aquatics since joining the Kroc Center over five years ago. Margie Humphreys returned home to Palmyra, Missouri in 2005 after living several years in Durham, North Carolina, where a Kroc Center was proposed for the city, but never realized.

www.krocquincy.org

| 217.222.5762

“I read about Joan Kroc’s $1.5 billion gift to The Salvation Army to build family community centers. Durham, of course, applied to be the home of a center, but was unfortunately not selected,” she recalls. “So, when it came time to move back home to Palmyra, I was delighted to learn that Quincy would be home to one of the Kroc Centers!”

“With personal training in the water, I am doing exercises that I would never have done on my own.” – Margie Humphreys Much like Jan Koester, an injury caused a setback for Margie. An injury to her hip led to her research of an aquatic exercise program that would help her recover and regain the range of motion lost. “With personal training in the water, I was doing and am doing exercises that I would never have done on my own. The knowledge given to me through personal training allows me to correct my form and adjust my technique so that I’m working correctly and specifically targeting various muscle groups,” Margie says. Margie has now been training for four years, both in and out of the water. And she doesn’t plan on easing up anytime soon. In fact, she’s become such great friends with her trainer, she has warned, “I hope [she] likes me, because I plan to keep doing this for a long time!” she laughs.

Friendship has also been a tremendous benefit for lifeguard, Eve Freeman, whose position in the Kroc Aquatics department has led to the formation of great relationships with her fellow lifeguard staff and instructors. Eve knew she wanted to be a part of the Kroc Center after her initial visit, which left a lasting impression. “Every time I walked in here before I became an employee, I was always greeted so respectfully and nicely by the staff,” she says. “I love that the Kroc Center is Christian-based and that everyone who walks through the doors will be guided by someone,” she offers. “I never knew that a whole organization/ community center could be faithbased, which gives me so much hope for our future and our community.” Eve is using her position as a lifeguard to impact the lives of others no matter the age difference. “I think it’s wonderful that you can be two years old or one-hundred two years old and there’s always something for you to do here,” she states. “Interacting with people of every age through my job has allowed me to grow as a person. I have also learned what it’s like to have a second family. I know with my training from the Kroc Center, I will be able to help many more people that may find themselves in need, whether it’s the need of a friend or even something material, I know that the skills I’ve learned from being here will allow me to be fully prepared to handle any type of situation.”

The Kroc Center’s lifeguard program is one of Aquatics International Magazine’s ten “Best of Aquatics” award winners for 2016!

Margie Humphreys and her daughter, Marcia, enjoy personal training in the Kroc Center pool.

Similar connections caught the attention of Marguerite Riley, who was looking for a community center with something for all ages. She needed a place where she could work out, but also a place where her children could enjoy kidfriendly activities such as rock climbing, playing in Huck’s Hideout, and swimming. Marguerite, whose six-year-old son Joel is currently enrolled in private swim lessons, is glad to have found the Kroc Center. The personal attention paid to her son was of great importance as she sought out a place for Joel to learn how to swim. “Joel’s teacher is so amazing and patient with him,” she says. “He’s always so excited to see her for a lesson, and she keeps everything entertaining and fun. Joel absolutely loves her!” With continued learning and practice, Marguerite says Joel has big aspirations for his newfound talents. He is looking forward to putting his skills to the test competitively as he eyes a spot on the swim team. Just like the Kroc Center itself, the Aquatics Department has something to offer everyone. Jan Koester, will continue to come back as she Winter / Spring 2017

looks toward becoming stronger and healthier each day. Margie Humphreys states, “As with everything in life, if you stop doing what works, it stops working. So I plan to keep training. Lifeguard Eve Freeman says the connections she’s made and the lives she’s helped influence during her time here are one of the most important things in her life. “I keep coming back because of the relationships I’ve built with my co-workers and the people who come in every day. I could never get up and leave them,” she beams. And for Marguerite Riley and her son Joel, the fun never stops at the Kroc Center. “Every year, the Kroc Center has something new. They’re always refreshing things to make them better.” The Kroc Aquatics Center remains committed to our patrons and staff, like Jan, Margie, Eve, Marguerite and Joel. We hope that you and your family will spend some time with us this winter and spring!

Pathway of Hope

To qualify for Pathway of Hope, a family must have at least one child under the age of 18, and be ready to take steps to make long-term change.

Approximately 1-in-6 Americans live in poverty, putting American poverty level at an all-time high. Children raised in poverty are 32 times more likely to live in poverty as adults. The Salvation Army has responded to the need to break this cycle with the Pathway of Hope. change their situation and are willing to share accountability with us for planned actions. As families achieve increasing stability, their degree of hope about their futures will also increase, serving as motivation along their journey to sufficiency. The Pathway of Hope provides targeted services to families striving to break free of inter-generational poverty. The Salvation Army will partner with families wanting to

to assist clients in reaching their goals and dreams. A team is developed consisting of a client, case manager, and the community. A case manager works intensively with a small number of families to help them achieve short and longterm goals through collaboration and accessing community resources. The Salvation Army expands from “serving” clients to long-term interventions that help “solve” client’s root cause barriers.

Pathway of Hope is rooted in the case management approach. Rather than looking at problems, the Strengths Model focuses on possibilities and develops strengths

The Salvation Army will support Pathway of Hope client families by: • Empowering them to achieve change by recognizing their inherent strengths and skills • Developing an action plan that includes personal aspirations and practical actions • Providing relevant Salvation Army services • Referring families to appropriate community resources The Salvation Army will continue to serve all those that come to us in need, but the Pathway of Hope will allow us to double our impact.

For more information about Pathway of Hope, contact The Salvation Army Family Services Center at 217-222-2087. 26
