RESOLUTE A fresh calendar motivates many to resolve to change habits and/or attitudes. There is hope that “this year” will be different. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 Genesis 1:1 reminds us that the beginning of creation (new life) begins with God. We know that the acceptance of the Gospel is the true “new beginning” for everyone, regardless of the time of year. At the Salvation Army Kroc Center, the start of a new year is a new beginning, but our mission never changes. We are resolved to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

What motivates you? The members here at the Kroc Center! I love coming here for them. They tell me that I inspire them but really they are the ones that inspire me. Favorite healthy snack? To satisfy my sweet tooth I’ll have a banana with peanut butter. When you get off track from your goals how do you get back up? That actually happens pretty often, especially during the holidays. Meal prepping on Sunday helps me to stay on track. How do you approach treating yourself? Definitely treat yourself in moderation! Even if I’m not eating great I’m always making sure that I’m staying active. MEET SUZI STONE, AQUATICS & CYCLE INSTRUCTOR New Years resolution? To get back into fitness. How will you accomplish your goal? My goal is to work out both upstairs [in the Gym] and downstairs [in the Pools] at the Kroc. What motivates you? My classes! I can be really down in the dumps or overwhelmed but I know I have to come in to teach and be on a high to keep them happy and going. Favorite healthy snack? I have a new one Sargento snacks.
Joyce Martin, Yoga & Tai Chi Instructor
Who should try your classes? There is a [pool] for everyone. We can help stroke victims. We can help amputees, deaf people, and blind people. Anybody! We can help them…just let us try. How do you balance a busy schedule with a healthy lifestyle? I try to walk the talk. I cheat. I’m human. I fall off the wagon but then I get back on. MEET JOYCE MARTIN, YOGA & TAI CHI INSTRUCTOR New Years resolution? To be in the present moment. How will you accomplish your goal? By paying attention to the breath. If I find myself wandering or worrying, I’ll just breathe and come back to the present moment. What motivates you? My heart; as long as that is still beating I’m going to get out there and do whatever it takes to stay healthy. Favorite healthy snack? Water. How do you balance a busy schedule with a healthy lifestyle? I take naps. I’ve had two 12-minute naps today in between classes. I sleep enough and I drink enough water. How do you approach treating yourself? I try not to deprive myself. I have very little willpower but I don’t beat myself up about it. At this point in my life, I do think I have achieved balance.

UNIVERSITY AVE. JOAN KROC’S VISION
After touring San Diego, Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s owner Ray Kroc, recognized a community that was in desperate need of a safe gathering place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture children’s social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. Mrs. Kroc donated $87 million to The Salvation Army to build the first Kroc Center in San Diego. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.6 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. Today, there are 26 Kroc Centers nationwide.
THE SALVATION ARMY KROC CENTER’S PURPOSE In keeping with the mission and holistic approach of The Salvation Army, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center provides opportunities that facilitate positive, life-changing experiences through: art, athletics, personal development, spiritual discovery and community service. The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s facilities, programs and services bridge the gap between potential and opportunity for children and adults, strengthen individuals and families, and enrich the lives of seniors.

THE FUTURE: KROC SAN DIEGO We are proud to be a part of San Diego for over 15 years. As we grow and learn, always adaptable, we continue to transform the community for the good. The proposed expansion of the San Diego Kroc Center, or Kroc 2, will feature an elevated sports deck, including arena soccer, and an expanded wellness center. There will be an additional 17,311 square feet of facility and 132 additional parking spaces, for a total of 511 spaces. With funding and corporate approval, we hope construction can begin in 2019. The preliminary plans have been developed by Kenneth D. Smith Architect & Associates. This proposed plan was developed with the help of our Kroc Center Advisory Council and The Salvation Army’s Metropolitan Advisory Board Property Committee. In addition to these established community groups, we are open and available to the interests and ideas of our neighbors.
EQUIPMENT USAGE Athletics equipment may be checked out by members and guests from Gym Guest Services. Photo ID or membership card required for check-out. Available equipment includes: basketballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, and table tennis.

The Kroc Center may use this information to consult public sources to help determine whether a guest may pose unreasonable harm to our patrons, staff or visitors. Your safety is important to us. By showing your photo ID at the front desk, you help The Kroc Center to provide a quality facility where individuals and families can work, play and grow together in a safe and nurturing environment. Thank you for cooperating with this policy. Please alert a Kroc Associate of any suspicious behavior.

THE HEART OF THE KROC CENTERS
In 1998, Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, donated $90 million to The Salvation Army to build a comprehensive community center in San Diego. When Mrs. Kroc passed away in 2003, she left $1.5 billion to The Salvation Army. At the time, this was the largest single gift given to any one charity. The money was designated to build a series of Kroc Centers nationwide patterned after the San Diego center. Today there are 26 across the country and Puerto Rico.

ALL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED! GENERAL KROC CENTER FAQs Q. Who can be a member of the Kroc Center? A. Everyone is welcome! Guest passes are available for people who are not members, and the general public is encouraged to sign up for programs. We do offer discounted program rates for members. Q. Can my child come to the Kroc Center alone? A. Children must be at least 12 years of age to be onsite without an adult 18 years or older. Q. Are Kroc Center programs affordable? A. The Kroc Center strives to price all fee based programs fairly and accessibly. All programs are priced to cover the cost of providing them. For those in our community who cannot afford to pay, we offer scholarships. For scholarship information, please call 619.269.1430. Q. Why does The Kroc Center need my money? A. Mrs. Kroc’s investment in this community was structured in a way that requires ongoing community support. Her endowment covers 41% of the Kroc Center’s $10 million annual budget. That means The Salvation Army Kroc Center must raise $6 million each year through community engagement including program service fees, membership dues, and fundraising efforts.
MEMBERSHIP FAQS Q. Can I change my membership type or level? A.Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade your membership. A Membership Change Form indicating your change must be submitted. No. All membership fees are non-refundable.
SD.KROCCENTER.ORG l FAQ'S

Once these passes are used up, members also receive a Be My Guest card, entitling them to bring a guest once per month. Q. What if I see a problem with my automatic payment? A. If a membership payment discrepancy is found in your monthly financial statement, please call 619.269.1501. Q. Can I put my membership on hold? A. GYM & WELLNESS FAQS Q. This is my first time attending a group exercise class; what do I need to do? A. Stop at the gym guest services after scanning your membership card. The attendant will scan your card a second time to check you into the appropriate class and provide you with a class token that you’ll give to the instructor prior to the start of class. Q. Do I always have to check-in for a class? A. Yes. The check-in program ensures that we maintain class capacities based on room size and are able to monitor statistics. Q. What if I’m running late to a group exercise class? A. Members and guests must check-in to group exercise classes at gym guest services no later than 10 minutes after the designated start time. TWO SAN DIEGO KROC VOLUNTEERS AND THEIR FIRSTHAND ACCOUNT THE SANTA ROSA AND NAPA WILDFIRE DISASTER When disaster strikes, The Salvation Army is quick to respond. The recent Santa Rosa and Napa wildfire scene was no different as The Salvation Army immediately began to deploy teams to provide relief to those who had lost everything. Two of our very own, from the San Diego Kroc Center, volunteered. Major Jerry Esqueda, Retired Pastor, and Meredith East, Aquatics Manager, share their experience on what they saw firsthand of the aftermath of people left with nothing and neighborhoods left in ashes. Major Jerry Esqueda has been with The Salvation Army for years. “When I entered, emergency disaster services was being trained throughout all the territories so that The Salvation Army soldiers and officers could be used in the frontline to help victims of disasters,” Esqueda shared. For Meredith East, on the other hand, this was a first-time experience yet something she has always wanted to do. “I’ve always wanted to do this. I really care about people and want to help them,” East explained. “As I went into the fire area it felt like I went into a war zone,” Esqueda recalled. “Everything was gone. Houses were burnt to the ground. There were cars and garages that were burnt all the way down.”
Meredith also felt an array of emotions as she journeyed to The Salvation Army warehouse, in Santa Rosa. “I was a little nervous at first,” East admitted. “I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into.” Despite the heaviness in their hearts, Esqueda and East quickly got to work and provided support in various ways. “We were there every day for 14 days serving food, water, whatever they needed,” Esqueda detailed. “They would come in and we would be like their friend; a friend that would listen to their stories… that would allow them to cry; a friend that would reach out their hand to them just to say that we are here for you. The ministry of presence was so important.” Meredith recognized an overall sense of gratitude amongst the community despite their suffering yet it was the spirit within those volunteering that gave her the continual boost to keep giving. “The people I was working with,” Meredith started, “They were all so amazing. At the end of the day they were still willing to go, go, go. That was very inspiring because it just made me be like, let’s do this!” One of the most difficult aspects of such a brave journey for both Esqueda and East was coming home and digesting all they had just experienced. “The community was thankful beyond measure,” Esqueda noted on their response to The Salvation Army showing up. “We developed friendships. It became like a family. It was hard to say goodbye to them."
