After touring San Diego, Joan Kroc, wife of McDonald’s owner Ray Kroc, recognized a community that was in desperate need of a safe gathering place with facilities and trained professionals to nurture children’s social skills, arts appreciation and athletic potential. Mrs. Kroc donated $87 million to The Salvation Army to build the first Kroc Center in San Diego. She was so pleased with what was accomplished here that she left $1.6 billion to The Salvation Army to build centers like this across the country. Today, there are 26 Kroc Centers nationwide.

THE SALVATION ARMY KROC CENTER’S PURPOSE In keeping with the mission and holistic approach of The Salvation Army, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center provides opportunities that facilitate positive, life-changing experiences through: art, athletics, personal development, spiritual discovery and community service. The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s facilities, programs and services bridge the gap between potential and opportunity for children and adults, strengthen individuals and families, and enrich the lives of seniors.

was named CIF Division IV Player of the Year all four years in high school for basketball. Today, her life continues in San Diego where she resides and spends much of her time giving back to the community. Candice made her way to the Kroc Center to assist the Basketball Day Camp this summer and shared her skills and story with the children, leaving them with the notion that they too could achieve their dreams. The Basketball Camp met Candice on the courts where she ran drills and gave pointers on passing and shooting the ball. The kids ran to and from the corners of the court, passing to one another and taking direction from the WNBA star. Many of the kids participating in the camp are the very age that Candice was when she discovered the path she wanted to pursue. "When I was ten years old they announced the WNBA. Before that there wasn't a WNBA, Wiggins shared. "And then in 1997 [the announcement] changed my life. It became a destination. It became real. Women's professional basketball became a real thing to me. So that was the moment that I knew I could

With perseverance and the right attitude Candice was able to stay on her path and chose Stanford over Duke, UCLA and USC. In her collegiate career Candice continued to soar toward the top of the basketball charts, becoming one of only seven who have become a four-time All American in women's basketball. Wiggins was the third overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx. Her WNBA career ended with the New York Liberty; announcing her retirement in 2016 after 8 seasons with the WNBA. One thing Wiggins wanted to convey to the Day Camp kids was the important role her faith played throughout her professional career. "My faith is probably the thing that has gotten me to where I am now," Wiggins explained. Candice began to read the Bible as she read her textbooks; making flashcards to memorize scripture. "It's very important to keep scripture and the word of God in your heart." Despite the fact that Candice Wiggins has been overwhelmingly successful she remains relatable. Wiggins brought an energy to the Kroc Day Camp that will live on and inspire the kids to pursue their wildest dreams. - Paige Pollock DAY CAMP l SD.KROCCENTER.ORG

THE FUTURE: KROC SAN DIEGO We are proud to be a part of San Diego for over 15 years. As we grow and learn, always adaptable, we continue to transform the community for the good. The proposed expansion of the San Diego Kroc Center, or Kroc 2, will feature an elevated sports deck, including arena soccer, and an expanded wellness center. There will be an additional 17,311 square feet of facility and 132 additional parking spaces, for a total of 511 spaces. With funding and corporate approval, we hope construction can begin in 2019. The preliminary plans have been developed by Kenneth D. Smith Architect & Associates. This proposed plan was developed with the help of our Kroc Center Advisory Council and The Salvation Army’s Metropolitan Advisory Board Property Committee. In addition to these established community groups, we are open and available to the interests and ideas of our neighbors.

JOAN KROC:

THE HEART OF THE KROC CENTERS

In 1998, Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, donated $90 million to The Salvation Army to build a comprehensive community center in San Diego. When Mrs. Kroc passed away in 2003, she left $1.5 billion to The Salvation Army. At the time, this was the largest single gift given to any one charity. The money was designated to build a series of Kroc Centers nationwide patterned after the San Diego center. Today there are 26 across the country and Puerto Rico.
