COMPUTING SYSTEM DESIGN SUMMARY

DALE is designed to embrace Southern California's famously wonderful climate, positioning itself to serve the diverse, local outdoor lifestyles that the sun has spawned. Among the houses innovative features is it's unprecedented flexibility. Its design takes the residential outdoor connection from visible to tangible and allows the inhabitants the ability to configure it to fit their daily needs. DALE is comprised of three modules that work as well in unison as they do individually. These modules come together for conditioning and security purposes when needed but are designed to multiply inhabitable square footage and take advantage of the landscape. DALE is an energy efficient net-zero solar powered home that will change the way homeowners interact with their environment.

DALE's mechanical systems design is simplified by the house's unique sliding features. Despite having a large living space, there are only 830 sqft of conditioned space, allowing us to operate a smaller system then we would have normally. Strategic timing of heating and cooling operations allows us to improve the heat pump hot water heater's performance by trapping hot air in the plenum space.

DALE is all about control and safety. A background safety feature prevents moving modules from colliding with objects or people. Smart user interfaces facilitate operation of electronics whether the house is opened or closed.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN SUMMARY

One of the unique challenges posed by the movement are the additional power draws created by motors and the fact that components are not fixed, requiring technologies not commonly found in the residential market. Our team is trying to find the simplest methods of making these connections work and has placed components to reduce wiring runs.

The structural design of DALE is about both span and weight. Our team has developed several prefabricated structural frame solutions that maximize the distance between rails while requiring as little extra power draw as possible, landing most recently on the truss framed proposal included in this set.

DALE EMBRACES SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA'S FAMOUSLY WONDERFUL CLIMATE TO SERVE THE DIVERSE OUTDOOR LIFETYLES THE SUN HAS SPAWNED. AMONG THE HOUSE'S INNOVATIVE FEATURES IS IT'S UNPRECEDENTED FLEXIBILITY. DALE TAKES THE INDOOR/OUTDOOR CONNECTION FROM VISIBLE TO TANGIBLE, AND ALLOWS THE INHABITANTS TO CONFIGURE THE HOUSE TO FIT THEIR DAILY NEEDS WITH TWO MODULES THAT WORK TOGETHER AND INDIVIDUALLY. THESE MODULES JOIN FOR CLIMATE CONDITIONING AND SECURITY PURPOSES WHEN NEEDED BUT ARE DESIGNED TO SEPARATE IN ORDER TO INCREASE INHABITABLE AREA AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LANDSCAPE WHEN POSSIBLE. DALE IS AN ENERGY EFFICIENT NET-ZERO SOLAR POWERED HOME THAT WILL CHANGE THE WAY HOMEOWNERS INTERACT WITH THEIR ENVIRONMENT.

DALE'S MECAHNICAL SYSTEMS DESIGN IS SIMPLIFIED BY THE HOUSE'S UNIQUE SLIDING FEATURES. DESPITE HAVING A LARGE LIVING SPACE, THERE IS ONLY 600 SQ. FT OF CONDITIONED SPACE, ALLOWING THE USER TO OPERATE A SMALLER SYSTEM THEN WE WOULD HAVE NORMALLY. STRATEGIC TIMING OF HEATING AND COOLING OPERATIONS ALLOWS US TO IMPROVE THE HEAT PUMP HOT WATER'S PERFORMANCE BY TRAPPING HOT AIR IN THE PLENUM SPACE.

DALE IS ALL ABOUT CONTROL AND SAFETY. A BACKGROUND SAFETY FEATURE PREVENTS MOVING MODULES FROM COLLIDING WITH OBJECTS OR PEOPLE. SMART USER INTERFACES FACILITATE OPERATION OF ELECTRONICS WHETHER THE HOUSE IS OPEN OR CLOSED.

ONE OF THE UNIQUE CHALLENGES POSED BY THE MOVEMENT ARE THE ADDITIONAL POWER DRAWS CREATED BY MOTORS AND THE FACT THAT COMPONENTS ARE NOT FIXED, REQUIRING TECHNOLOGIES NOT COMMONLY FOUND IN THE RESIDENTIAL MARKET. OUR TEAM IS TRYING TO FIND THE SIMPLEST METHODS OF MAKING THESE CONNECTIONS WORK AND HAS PLACED COMPONENTS TO REDUCE WIRING RUNS.

THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF DALE TACKLES BOTH SPAN, WEIGHT, AND FEASIBLE FLOOR PLATE DEPTH WHILE TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE INTERIOR DESIGN, EXTERIOR SHADING STRATEGIES, AND MOVEMENT ISSUES. COMPRISED PRIMARILY OF JOINED TRUSS FRAME ELEMENTS, OUR STEEL SUPER STRUCTURE HOUSES THE END TRUCKS WHICH ALLOWS DALE TO TRAVERSE ACROSS RAILS.

DALE, the Dynamic Augmented Living Environment, a net-zero, solarpowered house that is comprised of two prefab modules that run on a rail system, making it a home that is as active as the people who reside in it. DALE brings the outdoors in - literally! - And offers the inhabitants as many configurations as they can imagine. DALE’s two modules work as well in unison as they do individually. While the modules can come together for conditioning and security purposes, they are designed to multiply the home’s livable square footage and take advantage of Southern California’s sublime climate. An endless variety of module and canopy configurations optimize the usage of space and give the homeowner incredible flexibility. DALE redefines the relationship between the indoors and the outdoors so that the inhabitants are more aware how they interact with their home and how their home interacts with the environment.
