WHO ARE
OUTLIERS A R T The name for the ‘Outliers’ group is borrowed from the direction and initiatives as outlined in Malcom Gladwell’s 2008 book ‘Outliers’.
EXHIBITI
MELONY SMIRNIOTIS
The term refers to ‘a person or thing situated away or detached from the main body or system’. All four artists have years of experience in exhibiting and a passion for artmaking. They are united by their admiration for the beauty they discover in the Australian landscape and their ambitions to express it artistically. They believe that this continual practice, this quest to interprate the unique beauty of our environment is a lifelong challenge, but definately one that can provide many creative rewards.
PETER PORTEOUS
Perhaps Gladwell says it best ...
“Outliers are those who have been given opportunities - and who have the strength and presence of mind to seize them.”
KRISTINE BALLARD
“Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing that makes you good.”

MELONY SMIRNIOTIS This body of work focuses on my fondness for trees and my ongoing inspiration found in nature. Textures, layers and light continues to drive each composition. My palette knife technique and a range of mediums provide opportunity to explore both pattern and perspective. Each painting requires a different process based on the chosen mediums and intended outcome. The tactile nature of the work invites the viewer to experience the painting from all angles and depending on the lighting and viewpoint, the composition is designed to transform. Due to the texture and placement of light reflecting mediums, shadows take on new forms based on the angle which the artwork is viewed. “Trees and flowers are so important. The idea of blooming is the idea of becoming something different. PETER PORTEOUS As my formative years were spent in and around the Blue Mountains it seemed only natural to explore the area and west of the ranges through my art. I have family in Mudgee and I have spend many long hours exploring the landscape around Hartley, Oberon and Mudgee with my sketchbook and camera. This exhibition brings together these varied and unique landscapes. I have deliberately not focused on the usual western plain and mountain images that many artists find compelling. Instead I have created intimate paintings of the area as a way of introducing the viewer to my interpretation of this part of Australia. As many of the canvases are large it became difficult to paint en plein air due to the wind and heat, so most were completed in my studio from blocked in works, drawings and photographs. As an abstract expressionist I have endeavoured to paint the essence of the bushland. Most paintings are the result of trying to deconstruct the features before me so that the viewer can add their own interpretation. This conversation is at the heart of my art. I commend these paintings to you and hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I have had painting them. KRISTINE BALLARD This new collection of works is titled “Out of Range”. It is an ode to those who brave unknown frontiers – pioneers in the search for something new. As humans, it is always that which we cannot see, that we are drawn too. As an artist this is a feature that many of us try to capture in an artwork. That mysterious sense of space, wonder and awe on a two dimensional plane. The intangible made real. In my own art practice, I am trying to evoke that very sense of wonder in the development of my painting style called ‘Fragmatism®’. Images float in and out of each other and colours can dictate a mood. Channelling those pioneers, I feel daunted and excited every time I pick up a paint brush. My unknown territory is the canvas, as I seek out new places to bring back into the world. There are often struggles, back tracking and pitfalls in my travels. The titles of many of the works in this collection are a reflection of my journey with colour and paint, rather than a record of a specific location. This journey has been a wonderful creative adventure. I think Marcel Proust said it best... ”The real voyage of discovery consists, not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” I hope these new works get you to see differently, and help you to make your own visual discoveries along the way. TONY HOOKE These works are largely based on my wanderings around an area of bushland north of Goulburn where I established a studio a few years ago. A particular focus is the Turrallo Creek, its path through surrounding tussock flats and the steep ranges that form a curtain like back drop to the setting. More though than the structural form of the place, it is its fabric, the temporal changes that take place and its presence that are the real subject. The landscape in low light has great appeal. As the shadows deepen and the more precise details are lost, the imagination gains more licence to wander and invent. The medium used is egg tempera. The concept of making my own paint as required with a natural binder and mostly naturally occurring pigments is a very satisfying one. It seems right that many of the pigments in these landscapes are soil derived. CONTACT DETAILS Email: tonesan@optusnet.com.au www.tonyhooke.com.au
