handiong We, the creators of the magazine chose the name “Handiong” for the title because it means “warrior" or "hero” of the epic Ibalon of the bikolanos. The name “Handiong” fits perfectly to what our magazine entails because it shows the knowledge of our community and at the same time, our magazine raises awareness for the indigenous groups present in our country. “Handiong” is one of the main 3 heroes of the Ibalon. After his battles, Handiong built a town in Isarog and a season of progress followed. Under Handiong‘s leadership, the people planted rice which they named after him. He built the first boat to ride the waves of Ibalon seas. Inventors from the land were also inspired by him and his leadership

SANTIGWAR by Mary Jean Endriga For centuries, Bikolanos are still believing in people that we cannot see or we can call it "tawong lipod." When someone is suffering from an illness that can't be treated by conventional allopathic medicine, they are brought to a spiritiual healer or "Parabulong" in Bikol. The Parabulong will heal through Santigwar wherein the Parabulong will transform into divination or possession in order to talk with the spirit or to cam down the aggrieved tawo. They try to persuade these tawong lipod to pity the person who is suffering. The Parabulong is said to have chosen by the spirit/supernatural being as a medium to heal the people. Because of pity, the spirit instructs the parabulong not to ask for any payment. In return, the sacrifices that the parabulong undergoes will be reciprocated through good health, happiness and a peace of mind.
