The waiting area is located at the entrance of the existing ‘big-box’ store. A combination of existing walls and DIRTT walls into the design creates a play room for younger potential patients, a separate small lounge, and a general waiting area that includes a young adults lounge.
Flat-Packed Mental Healthcare Facility The Solution
The West is the most geographically diverse region, consisting of fertile valleys, mountains, beaches, and grassland. This area is typically prone to earthquakes.
Corpus Christi, TX
Mental disorder symptoms can be overcome by the re-creation of a sense of place.
The Waiting Area
The Midwest is known for its low, flat, and rolling plains. This area is rich with agriculture and is typically prone to tornadoes.
The Southwest is known for a history and cultural connections to the Native Americans. This area is typically prone to earthquakes.
1 The Floor Plan
Designing for disaster relief with a sense of place in mind allows children to achieve healing faster.
The Design Concept
Based on interchangeable modules that are indepedent of the existing structure.
-Prototypical locations: available, empty ‘big-box’ stores -Different region of the United States: variety of culture, people, and natural environments -Specific color palette: inspired by the region’s surrounding natural environments
Agile Architectural Solutions
Inspired by the patient’s healing process as well as the staff ’s emotional process throughout disaster relief Healing depends on a temporary emotional attachment to the facility and the staff. Detachment must occur to allow relocation to a stable and natural way of life.
Example shown here
Attachment restores a sense of comfort and safety for patients and staff ’s ability to properly tend to symptoms. Detachment is necessary to reduce emotional stress and avoid negative impact of devastation. Krista Williams, M.F.A. Thesis Project

The Multi-Purpose Area
The multi-purpose area gives patients a place to participate in a variety of activities: art, music, dance, theater, and drama. Culturally-appropriate elements that are specific to each region reinforce a sense of place to facilitate attachment. Another multi-purpose area will encourage patients to emotionally detach from the facility by telling their story of healing. 3 The Parts
