Shmitten Kitten Mix Tape Speed Dating First event Thu., Sept. 10, 7 p.m., $5-$8, The Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-238-5888, shmittenkitten.com. by Kristen Humbert Published: September 9, 2009
Gal-on-the-prowl Anna Goldfarb wants to meet every unattached guy in Philly, and as shmittenkitten.com's dating blogger, she could legitimately claim it as job research. But until now, she had to approach the boys on her own. This Thursday, however, she can bump into singles at her own speed-dating series, spawned by her desire to help '90s kids meet. Each of the four events takes place in a different Philly bar or restaurant, and has a unique '90s music theme, like alternative, grunge or emo. (Singles can suggest songs from that genre when they sign up.) Goldfarb hopes that hearing old favorites like Teenage Fanclub and Smashing Pumpkins will not only bring comfort to participants, but also help provide a built-in mutual interest from which attraction can spark. Each person will meet with 10 to 20 other singles, only for a minute and a half. To avoid the painful crutch of talking about the weather, Goldfarb has provided questions to ask each other, such as "What's the worst bathroom in Philly?" ("I really bond with guys over complaining about stuff," she says.) An exit survey will help uncover any love matches, whose names will then be drawn from a hat, with winners getting a $25 gift card to Cantina for a first date. Goldfarb herself has never attended a dating event, blaming it on the stigma of discomfort that she hopes hers will squash. "The response is that people are grateful. They know that it's not going to be stuffy or awkward," she says. "Well, it may be awkward, but the drinks will help." First event Thu., Sept. 10, 7 p.m., $5-$8, The Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-238-5888, shmittenkitten.com.
