Have you ever imagined what your life would be like if you could not read? There are many people who either can not or have never learnt to read, but here I am endeavouring to encourage people who can read quite adequately, but choose not to read much, to available themselves of one of the most enjoyable and educational activities in life. So here are ten of the many reasons why you should read books, as opposed to just newspapers, magazines or internet reading. These are not in any special order of importance.
Reading is beneficial for your brain. Reading will simlulate your brain by making you think more, improve your reading comprehension by requiring you to remember themes, characters, and details of the story and by building a higher level of concentration. Reading will improve your vocabulary by exposing you to new words you might not have come across otherwise. You will learn new words by inference. You can become an expert in various subjects of your choice. It has been said that if you read a book a week in your chosen field, you can become an international expert in 5 years! Books are a great source of cheap and enjoyable entertainment. You can learn more about the world, present and past, and get a glimpse into other cultures and places and expand your horizons, without actually visiting there. Reading can help you to relax and reduce stress. Watching TV, especially the news can be very stressful, with all that bad news, but reading will help you to unwind, after a hard day's work. Reading can improve your self discipline, if you can make time every day for reading and stick to it. Even 30 minutes daily is beneficial. Books will give you new ideas and more topics of conversation. You will always have something to share. You can save money by reading how-to books, and learning how to do various jobs yourself, instead of hiring someone. Reading can increase your creativity by giving you new ideas and information for your brain to work on.
So, what are you waiting for. Get off the computer, grab a good book and start reading!
