TIMELY TIP fOr JULY GardENErS frOM COrNELIUS NUrSErY every texan knows water is an essential element for maintaining a beautiful lawn and landscape and after last year’s drought we really value this precious natural resource. it is each person’s responsibility to conserve water yet keep our gardens thriving through the heat. if you own a sprinkler system, each zone should be programmed differently depending on the needs of that area. You should keep your sprinkler system in the manual mode so it doesn’t run when it’s not needed. established lawns should be watered once every five to seven days, applying about one inch of water each time. this soaking encourages deeper rooting which leads to stronger, healthier plants. Landscape irrigation can account for more than 50% of all water used in texas during the

Shrubs and flowerbeds may require more watering depending on the age of the plant material. A good test is to dig down 4 to 6 inches and feel the soil. If the soil is dry, a good deep watering is in order. Plants in full sun will require more moisture as well as those growing in containers. Please remember, any newly planted tree or shrub requires additional hand watering for that first year. The best time of day to water is early morning before the temperatures begin to rise. Also, early mornings tend to be a time of lower winds and thus reduced evaporation. Mulching is an excellent way to retain moisture. It will also insulate the soil surface from the direct rays of the sun and prevent weeds from germinating. Mulched soils can be as much as 10 to 15 degrees cooler than unmulched soils. Apply a two to three inch layer of mulch to all beds, plantings and containers

coMMUnitY reMinder

Basketball is a fun sport that many like to play. As a reminder, please make sure that all basketball goals are kept in an upright position in your driveway. Basketball goals should not be left in the street at anytime or left on the side of your home when not in use. Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be a nuisance to drivers in the community and a hazard should there be a need for an emergency vehicle to gain access to your street. Please note this is also a violation of deed restrictions and if you receive violation letters regarding this matter you could be sent to the attorney and be liable for those charges.

Please keep all trash, including lawn clipping bags, stored out of sight until trash pick up day.

Briscoe Junior High 8th grader Bronson Teles has been chosen as the “Do the Write Thing Challenge 2012 National Ambassador for Houston and Harris County. The competition had 11,614 students write anti-violence essays this year, of which only 210 were chosen as School Finalists. From the 210 School Finalists, two were chosen as State Ambassadors and two were chosen as National Ambassadors. Bronson is a National Ambassador. The “Do the Write Thing challenge requires students to write an essay based on how violence has affected their lives, what the causes of youth violence are and what they can do to reduce youth violence. Essays are then reviewed by a panel of volunteers recruited by the DtWT committee established for the participating locality. The panel of volunteers selects a boy and a girl from each school who submit the most responsive entry to serve as “school ambassadors. A panel of local “celebrity readers recruited by the local DtWT committee then reviews the essays and selects boy and girl school finalists as “national ambassadors who have submitted the most meaningful entries. As a national ambassador, Teles’s essay will be published in a book containing other student ambassador essays, which is then placed in the Library of Congress. He will also be recognized in two major ceremonies - one for Texas School Finalists in Austin on June 8th - 10th and another for National Ambassadors in Washington D.C. on July 14th -18th.

PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEAShES It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also:

4819 katy HoCkley rD katy, tX 77493

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Prairie rose Cadette trooP 3068 of Katy

Cadette Troop 3068 of Katy recently completed the Journey aMaze by planning and carrying out a “take action” project by hosting a “Friendship Fair” for 40 Junior Girl Scouts. There were all types of fun friendship activities that included skits, crafts and unique games focusing on the ins and outs and highs and lows of friendship. One main lesson they taught the younger Girl Scouts was to always T-H-I-N-K before speaking:

T - is it true? H - is it helpful? I - is it inspiring? N - is it necessary? K - is it kind?

2nd Generation Tree Expert

These Cadettes felt passionate about teaching the younger girls tips and skills to better prepare themselves for their upcoming Junior High years as the Cadettes are well aware that friendship is not always an easy road. Troop 3068 is part of Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, Prairie Rose Service Unit. The service unit serves: Elementary: Alexander, Creech, Griffin, Holland, Kilpatrick, Stanley and Williams; Jr. High: Beck, Beckendroff, Cinco Ranch and McMeans; High School: Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes.
