VANDALISM IN COMMUNITY In the past, Westheimer Lakes has been the target of numerous acts of vandalism. The POA believes that some of this vandalism may be occurring from individuals in the community. When items such as street signs, park signs, windows, lights are in need of replacement as result of this vandalism, your POA bears this expense. As a reminder, please beware of your surroundings and should you see any suspicious activity in the community please contact the Sherriff’s department (281-341-4665) immediately.
LET US KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS LITTER FREE! Take responsibility for yourself and be a good neighbor! Keep our streets and neighborhood trash and litter free! Make it a habit, be a good neighbor and do your part! If each person did their own part (around the outside of their home including their little stretch of street in front of their house), what a better place this would be to live! A clean environment/neighborhood makes people feel good about themselves. They will keep it clean. Some need to be reminded. Others need to be continually reminded. It takes time to change habits. Keeping your neighborhood clean is a habit that takes conscious effort.
ANIMAL / PET CONTROL Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space… remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not be allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. To report loose dogs and cats, please call Ft. Bend Animal Control: 281-342-1512. December 2013

Hitting golf balls is meant for the golf course only. It can cause damage not only to personal property but to people as well. Please respect your neighbors and refrain from hitting golf balls inside the community.
NO TRESPASSING ON RESIDENTS PRIVATE PROPERTY
There have been complaints about children crossing through residents’ private yards to get to the facilities. Please let children know that they cannot cross private property. If this should occur more than once, we ask homeowners’ to contact the proper authorities.
BASKETBALL GOALS Basketball is a fun sport that many like to play. As a reminder, please make sure that all basketball goals are kept in an upright position in your driveway. Basketball goals should not be left in the street at anytime or left on the side of your home when not in use. Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be a nuisance to drivers in the community and a hazard should there be a need for an emergency vehicle to gain access to your street. Please note this is also a violation of deed restrictions and if you receive violation letters regarding this matter you could be sent to the attorney and be liable for those charges.
NO SOLICITING signs are posted throughout the entrances of the community. If this continues to be a growing issue at your residence and would like to place a NO SOLICITING sign in your yard, you may certainly do so. Please be sure that the sign is placed by your front door and place only (1) sign at your home.

THE RIVER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
“The River” United Methodist Church, an exciting new church in our community, would like to invite you to participate in one of our local bible studies. Each “REAL Group” meets for about an hour to discuss topics of interest to the group. The discussions are grounded in the Word of God. BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computergenerated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating December 2013

HOLIDAY SHOPPING SAFETY! We’re going to be out and about and this means our focus and attention are compromised. Be sure to put safety as your #1 wish item on your holiday shopping list. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind: • Do not buy more than you can carry. • Save all receipts. • Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. • Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. • Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket. • Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in. • Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk or if possible, take them directly home. • If you are shopping with children, make a plan in case you are separated from each other. • Select a central meeting place. • Teach kiddos to know they can ask mall personnel or store security employees if they need help. • Before surfing the Internet, secure your personal computers by updating your security software. • Keep your personal information private and your password secure. Do not respond to requests to “verify” your password or credit card information unless you initiated the contact. • Beware of “bargains” from companies with whom you are unfamiliar. • Use secure websites for purchases. Look for the icon of a locked padlock at the bottom of the screen or “https” in the URL address. • Shop with companies you know and trust.

2. Twenty (20) things to recycle. Go to www.mnn.com/lifestyle/ recycling/stories/20-things-you-didnt-know-you-could-recycle for the complete article. Copied below are the first 7 things to recycle. We’ll continue this list in the next two newsletters. 1) Athletic shoes - Tired, broken-down, “fragrant” running shoes are most generally directed to the trash, but given our penchant for kicks, that’s a lot of sneakers stinking up the landfill. A better future for your athletic shoes is to introduce them to one of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe recycling bins (www.mnn. com/lifestyle/responsible-living/blogs/recycle-your-athleticshoes-at-nike). Nike in turn will incorporate them into the raw material called Nike Grind, which is used in everything from running tracks to shoe soles to zippers. 2) Bicycles - Americans send more than 15 million bicycles out to pasture every year. But rather than throwing them in the dump, you can give your old two-wheelers a second life by donating them to Bikes of the World (www.bikesfortheworld. org), which collects, refurbishes and donates bikes to lowerincome people and select institutions in developing countries. 3) Bike tools and gear - With a similar mission to Bikes of the World, Bikes Not Bombs (https://bikesnotbombs.org) takes bicycle bits, pieces and gear in addition to the bikes themselves. They accept parts, tools, broken components such as cracked frames, worn tires, tubes with holes, helmets, bags, lights, pumps, locks, cycle clothing, etc. They restore bikes and gear and deliver them overseas to economic development projects in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Bikes that don’t get shipped often land in the group’s youth programs where teens learn bicycle safety and mechanic skills while earning bikes to keep for themselves. 4) Bras - There comes a time in every bra’s life when it just has to move on and bras aren’t generally the kind of clothing we women toss in the “to donate” pile. But the Bosom Buddy Program (www.mnn.com/lifestyle/natural-beauty-fashion/ blogs/recycle-your-bra), started by a textile recycling company in Arizona, wants your weary bras. After sprucing them up, they donate the revamped brassieres to women’s shelters or other programs that help women gain self-sufficiency. 5) Brita water filters - Ditching plastic water bottles for filtered water is a resourceful move, even if you are left with spent water filters. But if you use Brita products, you’re in
1. The holidays are the best time to recycle. DON’T throw away a pile of stuff when it can find a use elsewhere and keep our landfills a little emptier (and save you tax money). • Excess paper and cardboard gift wrapping can be recycled at the local schools in the yellow and green bins. • Plastic packaging can be recycled using your curbside bins. • Clothing, shoes and household items can always be recycled through charitable organizations like individual church thrift shops, Salvation Army, Purple Heart, etc. Aside from helping your neighbor during the holiday period, you can also get a tax write-off for such contributions. Or you can sell gently used items at local resale shops (again, money in your pocket). • Electronics can be recycled at the local Goodwill office on Hwy. 6, just south of West Little York. A tax write-off for your donation just before the end of the year is a bonus! • Old cell phones can be donated to local women’s shelters, who wipe them and donate them to women in danger of abuse. • Old eyeglasses can be donated Lion’s International (www. lionsclubs.org/EN/our-work/sight-programs/eyeglass-recycling). Check with your optometrist, most optometrist offices collect glasses for donation to this program.
