NEWS FROM THE RESIDENT HOA BOARD MEMBER HI WESTGATERS! • At our Resident Meeting with the HOA in September, we discussed several important issues: we are going down on our dues between $20-40, our reserve funding goal will have been met by the end of the year (yea!), therefore protecting the financial future of Westgate, I’m going to propose to the Board that the HOA pay for initial curb address painting for safety reasons; KB is leaving, so we’re definitely having Board elections at the annual meeting in March and we’re waiting to decide on two costly items (wood fence staining and adding a splash park) until March so an all resident board can make that decision. • The time is finally here. KB is selling its last home in Westgate! Therefore, we’ll be having a Board election at our annual meeting in March 2014 so we can have all three Board positions filled with residents for the first time ever! We need reasonably-minded individuals who care about our neighborhood to run for the positions. Neighborhood business is mostly taken care of at once-amonth meetings. This is a good way to contribute to keeping up your property values. To throw your hat in the ring, contact VanMor Properties - firstname.lastname@example.org or 832-593-7300. • Our MUD district, Harris County MUD #70 has released details in your water bill about the state of the drought and has requested water conservation from our residents in accordance with state wishes. Currently our restrictions are labeled “Moderate,” with the following specifics: Summary: reduce water usage by 10% and water only between 8 PM & 6 AM. Even-numbered addresses water Sundays and Thursdays; odd-numbered addresses water Saturdays and Tuesdays. For more details, if you’re on Facebook, you can go to www.facebook.com/download/preview/534201423320458 to see the complete document. It’s also in your water bill. Other important issues: • Members of the pool committee and I have been meeting with Expressions Pools regarding issues at the pool. All pools have some issues, as the lifeguards are typically teenagers, but we’ve also had problems with the behavior of some residents, making it difficult to keep good lifeguards. We’re coming up with strategies for preventing the problems for next year. email@example.com. • We are adding trash cans to the main park, a couple of benches in the new park area that connects Westgate Park Dr. to section 14 and we are discussing places to add dog waste containers to discourage leaving pet waste behind while walking our pets. Thank you so much for the wonderful job in maintaining your homes’ appearances. Homes have been selling well in Westgate, thanks to efforts of our residents and community. Sincerely, Kimberly McGaughy Westgate HOA Board Member

HOLIDAY DECORATING FOR WESTGATE
Last year, we saved a lot of money by having volunteers decorate Westgate’s entrances for the holidays. If you’d like to help with that this year, please contact Kimberly McGaughy at westgateHOA@ yahoo.com. The garland and lights will go up in late November. We also purchase four wreaths to decorate ourselves to spruce things up. We could really use the help and it’s a good way to get in the holiday spirit!
WESTGATE’S NEW PET DIRECTORY
Thank you to A.J. Hutchinson for getting us started on a great new idea for Westgate - the Westgate Pet Directory on our Westgate Subdivision Facebook group page. In an effort to reunite lost pets with their owners, upload your pet’s photo. In the event your pet ever gets loose, they can be identified in this photo album and returned to you via the contact info you provide as a description or comment on the photo. Any group member can click on each photo to see that individual pet’s home contact info. For any Westgate group member that wants to add a picture to the directory, please follow these directions (Cannot be done from a phone): 1. Click on tab that says “photos” at the top of page next to the tab that reads events. 2. Select the album that says Westgate Pet Directory. 3. Select “add photo” in the top right hand corner and browse for the photo on your computer. 4. When you add the photo, you can add the contact info as a description or as a comment. Thanks everyone for helping with this and posting your pets we are hoping this helps with finding the homes when our loved ones get out on the loose. When looking for the info., click on an individual photo.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR DEED RESTRICTIONS?
In an effort to educate our residents, each month we highlight some deed restriction or other item that needs improvement in Westgate. This month, we are highlighting some basics about maintaining your lawn and garden beds. In the Builders’ Guidelines, Section C, numbers 25 and 30, Lawn Maintenance: “Grass, vegetation and weeds shall be cut…”to maintain “…a neat and attractive condition. Grass growing onto or over sidewalks, driveways and curbs…” is not permitted. Front Yard Planting Beds “may not exceed 25% of the front yard and must be proportionate in appearance…” and “must be maintained… as to not detract from the neighborhood which includes pruning and weeding.” If not providing maintenance, the homeowner will receive a letter with 10 days to correct the problem. Otherwise, the association may “enter upon” the property “to maintain, cut, trim and/or restore” the landscaping and bill the homeowner. Following these instructions helps keep our neighborhood looking neat and thus keeps up our property values. Home condition tends to be a contagious conditiongood or bad. Let’s be considerate of our neighbors! Copies of all Westgate founding documents (including the ARC form) can be Recommended bythe Westgate website www.westgatetx.com, they downloaded from are located under the HOA tab. Tom Tynan,

DEED RESTRICTIONS COMMITTEE: For the past few months, I have not received very many concerns regarding possible deed restrictions. This could be a great sign that more and more people are beginning to get the message that it is important to keep up the looks of their property. It could also mean that we are getting a little relaxed in reporting deed restrictions to our property management company. Currently there are 29 residents on the committee, with room for more. If you are interested in being an active set of eyes in the community to assist us with spotting the yards, fences and buildings that need work, please let us know by emailing Tom Rowley at email@example.com. We are a community that is growing in the right direction. Property is selling quickly because of the attractiveness of our neighborhoods. Let’s try to keep it that way. You may report possible deed restrictions in two ways. First, you can email Kourtnie at VanMor directly by sending a photo and message to firstname.lastname@example.org. Or, if you wish to remain anonymous you can email me at the above address. It will be very helpful if you sent a photo of the violation, along with the address of the resident not in compliance. Please take some time to be observant as you drive through your neighborhood. Please remember: Sending in a photo with address and description ONCE is enough. Repeatedly photographing someone’s residence can be considered stalking if you’re doing it over and over again. We’ve had an example of someone sending in photographs several times a week over several weeks. That’s abusive. NEWSLETTER: Do you have information you’d like to put in the newsletter? Would you like to help out by writing brief articles about Westgate? Contact Kimberly McGaughy at email@example.com; help keep our residents informed! POOL AND PARKS COMMITTEE: We would like to hear from residents about what they want to add to the new park areas this year (Westgate Park drive near Fair Grange and a lot between sections 10 and 12), adding dog waste containers in the KB areas of Westgate (where is best?), lighting in park (gazebo light has been added for security, looking at adding one in the back corner for safety) and entrance landscaping that needs refurbishing.

Some have suggested having some social events for adults only - maybe an ice cream social? Adult swim party? Other ideas? Contact email@example.com to help or to contribute ideas for this and other events. YARD OF THE MONTH COMMITTEE: Like most other neighborhoods, we now have our own Yard of the Month committee. This year, for the first time, winners will receive a gift card of $35 - $10 of it was donated by our local Ace Hardware. Thank you so much Mr. O’Malley! Let’s show our appreciation to Ace! We really appreciate residents who keep up the curb appeal of our neighborhood! Contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to help!
RECOMMENDED TRADESPEOPLE LIST ON THE WESTGATE FACEBOOK PAGE
Have you ever needed to call someone for repairs or to have work done, but you didn’t want to just pick someone out of the yellow pages? Well, we’ve begun a document that is our neighborhood’s personal “Angie’s List:” “Recommended Tradespeople And Businesses.” All people and businesses listed on it are recommended by people in Westgate who have had personal experiences with them. We also have a list for businesses actually owned by Westgate residents called “Westgate Residents who provide Services.” If you are a resident who owns a business, provide a description of your services, price range, history of your business, etc. Support your neighbors by checking it out; you might find what you need very close to home! To access the documents, go to www.facebook.com and search for “Westgate Subdivision.” Look at the top of the page under “Files” and you’ll see them there! Add yours to the list!

To get the latest information on what’s happening in Westgate, be sure to check our other Westgate sources: 1. The WESTGATE WEBSITE, www.westgatetx.com (you must register); 2.) NextDoor Westgate.com 3. The Westgate FACEBOOK page (on Facebook, search for “WESTGATE SUBDIVISION” and you must sign up); you can find goodies like pictures of our events. If you have trouble finding it on Facebook, type this into your address bar: www.facebook.com/ groups/WestgateSubdivision/. Within a day or two, you will then be asked to verify your address, as it is a residents’ only group. Look for this in your “messages” section at the top left of the page and look under your “other” folder OR I will “friend” you to be able to send you a message directly. 4. The WESTGATE HOA EMAIL, www.westgateHOA@yahoo.com (send an email to that address to be added to the contact list). The newsletter only comes out once a month and information is a month old, so the other methods are used when something happens last minute and if you missed the newsletter. Also, I’ve spoken with residents who say they don’t receive a newsletter; if you know a resident who doesn’t get one, please have them email email@example.com with their name and address and the editor will forward the information to the appropriate person at Krenek Printing.

CY-CHRISTIAN TEAM FOR HALEY’S MIRACLE
A group of Cypress Christian School faculty, students and families participated in the 2013 Be The Match Walk+Run in Sugarland in honor of CCS seventh grade student Haley Cannon. Haley is battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and she received her miracle on July 9, 2013 in the form of a bone marrow transplant from a donor on the international registry. The journey to that day is an incredible and inspiring story, because God had some amazing plans for Haley and her family. CCS teacher Mrs. Caroline Young participated in the event and wrote this about her experience: “I have never been a runner, but on July 10th, I started my first day of “Couch to 5K” training. I also signed up to be a team captain for Team Haley’s Miracle. Our team raised $1,450 to help match volunteer marrow donors with blood cancer patients, to help uninsured patients and to fund research. I started off walking and worked my way up to running. I trained almost every day for 10 weeks and on Saturday, September 14th,” I ran the 5K for Haley! It was a great feeling to cross the finish line for her since she couldn’t get out and run as she was recovering at home from her bone marrow transplant. It was an even better feeling when I signed up for the Bone Marrow Donor Registry. There are so many people who are still waiting for their miracle in the form of a bone marrow donor. It is very easy to sign up. Anyone who is interested can go to the Be The Match at http://bethematch.org/Home.aspx website for more information. Haley’s story was featured on ABC13 news, also. To view, visit http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/video?id=9239527.”

TRACKS-TO-TRAILS IDEA EARNS HOUSTON CHRISTIAN STUDENT A CATALYST AWARD FROM HOUSTON TOMORROW
A Houston Christian High School student’s leadership trip to Turkey inspired his award-winning proposal to convert unused Houston-area train tracks into pedestrian and bike trails. Michael McCreight, a junior, was the only high school student to receive an inaugural Catalyst Award from Houston Tomorrow, which held its recognition ceremony September 26th at the BioScience Research Collaborative. He was selected from students in 13 counties in the Houston region. The Crystal Awards recognize individuals who propose a large-scale catalytic change that would lead Houston to become the home of the healthiest, happiest and most prosperous people in the United States by 2036, Houston’s 200th birthday. Michael’s proposal, called “Turning Old Travels Into New Travels,” explored how to repurpose something old and unused into a healthy, lifestyle-changing amenity for many to access. “The land is already there and nothing would need to be torn down,” he said. While in Turkey this past summer with Global Trek, Houston Christian’s student leadership program offering cultural perspective led by Head of School Stephen Livingston, Michael noticed how “people walked to get places instead of just for exercise.” It reminded him of his own neighborhood, in Houston Heights. “I realized that we have guided trails to walk on versus the busy streets, which encourages our neighborhood to commute more on foot or cycling,” Michael said. “It was then that I realized this would be a good way to try and help Houston.” Former Houston Christian trustee Bill Peel encouraged Michael to enter his tracks-to-trails proposal in the Crystal Awards. The competition required an essay and brief video explaining the idea in detail. This year’s competition recognized individuals in five categories. Adult award categories included Emeritus, Excellence, Engaged and Evolving. The student award category, Emerging, targeted college and high school students. Michael earned the Emerging category for high school students. Houston Tomorrow is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement of life in the Houston area. GIRL SCOUTS COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
We would like to thank the adult and older girl volunteers who helped out at the Rally Nights that were held in September and October! Please contact Dianne Massie (firstname.lastname@example.org) or call her at 281-550-9148 for more information on Copper Creek Meadows Community Girl Scouts. You can also check the website (www.gssjc. org) for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council. New Girl Scout Leaders were invested as Girl Scouts at a meeting held on October 8th. They celebrated the birthday of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low (October 31st) a little early with a special cake and a time to get acquainted. Our leader/Daughter weekend is an event that has made wonderful memories in the past, so we are looking forward to this year’s event. Talent show? Dutch oven cook-off? Trail ride? There are always lots of things to do… and having some one-onone time with your OWN daughter makes it even more special for our busy leaders! There are more activities in the planning stage, including a Daisy Day for our youngest Girl Scouts. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following elementary schools (and their corresponding middle and high schools): Wilson, Metcalf, Lieder, Tipps, Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center. Girl Scouting has been building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place - and we’ve been doing it since 1912! Give us a call - we’d love to talk to you!

JEFF FURSTENBERG EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT
Thanks to Jeff Furstenberg, 15 year old sophomore at Cypress Falls High School and group of fellow scouts from Troop 202, the Labay Middle School concession stand has been renovated and is ready for use. He did this for his Eagle project, a requirement for the highest and hardest rank to earn in Boy Scouts. For this project, the boys had to tear down all of the old paneling, cut new paneling, trim and windows, paint and install it all. It took 3 days to do the work (in 100 degree weather), but it took months to prepare. He had to fill out lots of paperwork, get it approved and had to earn money for the supplies. But it turned out well and Labay now has a usable concession stand. Before, the concession stand was very run down with rotted wood and paper thin paneling you could poke holes through and hazy windows. Now it is fresh and ready for use. Next time you go to a Labay football game, go check out the concession stand and buy yourself some snacks! Jeff would like to thank everybody who helped out including the scouts and the great assistant scout masters that volunteered their time. He couldn’t have done it without you guys.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 1296
Fall is an exciting time outdoors in Texas as vast numbers of birds migrate through our state to winter in warmer climates. Hawks to hummingbirds travel hundreds if not thousands of miles to visit or pass through Texas and are a few of the bird species skins that Audubon education director, Mary Ann Weber , taught the scouts about when she recently visited Troop 1296 scouts. She brought with her a special guest - a Great Horned Owl, rehabilitated from an injury and now on the teaching “staff.” He kept a sharp eye on everyone as they learned about birds, as part of their introduction to the Bird Study merit badge. The scouts have since been on birding trips during camp outs at Brazos Bend to investigate these avian neighbors. If you are interested in joining Boy Scouts, please call Troop 1296 Committee Chair, Mr. David Covington, at 281-855-2239 or visit our website www.houston1296.mytroop.us. Boy Scout Troop 1296 meets weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Holmsley Elementary School, located at 7315 Hudson Oaks Dr., next to Langham Creek High School, during the school year. Meetings include activities, skill sessions and planning for our monthly camp outs. Come join the fun!

The tournament will take place at one of Houston’s premiere golf facilities, The Club at Falcon Point located in Katy, Texas. MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK PROVIDES FREE COUNSELING TO TROOPS AND FAMILIES
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family
counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling. com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an allday workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org. Join NCJW in celebrating 100 years of helping women, children and families in Houston through advocacy and community service. Celebrate our 100th anniversary with us at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on November 23, 2013 (specialevents@ ncjwhouston.org).
