International Themed Block Party and Spring Fling!
The Westgate Social Committee met in January to plan the Westgate 2012 Social Season. They have more members this year, so they’re hoping to have even more events. To start the fun, they want to have a Block Party! This particular block party will be a potluck (bring a dish to share) and have an International theme; they would like multiple block parties throughout the neighborhood, so we can continue to get to know our neighbors and become a closer and therefore safer, neighborhood. We just need people to be the contact people for their area or section; we will help organize it for you. After that, everyone brings their favorite, authentic dish to share with neighbors. And the party will be as vibrant or as relaxed as you make it; think of something to do that really says “This is who we are” - bring some music, have a contest, think of games for the kids – whatever - and the social committee will help you achieve your goals. Contact us and one thing that the social committee will do is help you get the word out to your area about the details of the party plans. The weekend for the International Block Party is March 23rd and 24th (Friday or Saturday - whichever you choose), before the weather gets Houston Hot; so plan your Spring Fling/International Block Party and come on out and help keep Westgate hoppin’! Volunteer some time! Email Kimberly McGaughy at firstname.lastname@example.org to get started! Remember, none of this is possible without community participation. Some people are already getting started: • Kimberly McGaughy for Section 4 (behind the big park and pool): email@example.com • Donna Lamy for Section 6 (area around Autumn Manor off Westgate Park Dr): firstname.lastname@example.org • Veronica Hill for Section 7 (area near Golden Thistle off Forest Heights): email@example.com • Keesha Turner for Section 9 (area around Westridge Bend Ln off Forest Heights): firstname.lastname@example.org • Joanne Straker for Sections 18 and 19 (the other side of the creek): email@example.com If you are in one of these areas, contact the person to let them know you’ll be there and what you’ll bring and ask what you can do to help, if you can. If you don’t see your area represented, contact Kimberly at firstname.lastname@example.org to find out whom to contact for your area. Here’s looking forward to a great new year in Westgate! See you there!
Westgate Christmas Decoration Contest Results
We’ve heard back from the Christmas Decoration Contest committee; there were so many favorites! Each and every street and house was seen and enjoyed and the committee made an effort to make sure no one area was favored. Also, they made sure that

houses that won awards earlier in the year were not favored. The decorations had to be lit on December 16th and 17th to be considered. What a difficult decision! The committee gave out three equal awards, instead of 1st and 2nd because it was too difficult to pare it down to that. And the winners are… 18330 Farriswood Court: The Rodriguez Family in section 3 7619 Pasture Bend Court: The Abulail Family in section 16 7203 Glenwick Court (The Meaning of Christmas winner): The Mendez Family in section 1 Go to the Westgate Subdivision Facebook page to see photos of the winners! Other addresses of note: 18115 Ivory Crossing 7722 Serene Wood and many others... While scouring the neighborhood looking for the best decorations, the committee loved all the lights, the Grinches, the giant blowup sleigh and reindeer, the Santa and helicopter, the Santa and airplane, the doors wrapped like presents, the trains, the classic and the eclectic color schemes and so many other things too numerous to name here. Our neighborhood “did itself proud” this year, more than other years, I think. Congratulation winners! Thanks to the volunteers who spent hours on viewing and judging.

Recycling for Charity in Westgate
Donna and her son are on a recycling project; everything they collect goes toward funding the Ronald McDonald house which provides family care and lodging for families of children receiving cancer treatment. They can come by on Thursday mornings before 10 AM to pick up recycling from you. They collect paper items, cardboard boxes, glass and cans. You can leave it at your door or at the end of your driveway. Thanks so much for your participation: lidiacody@ yahoo.com. • Plastic needs to be separated in a bag and will only be picked up on the last Thursday of the month. • They can also pick up large metal items with an email prior to Thursday - such as washer/dryers, BBQ grills etc. • Recycling: It creates new jobs, gives new life to materials otherwise destined for a landfill, conserves natural resources and saves energy. Don’t trash it, recycle it!

Stay Up to Date with Westgate News
To get the latest information on what’s happening in Westgate, be sure to check our other Westgate sources: 1.) The Westgate website, www.westgatetx.com (you must register) 2.) The Westgate Facebook page (on Facebook, search for “WESTGATE SUBDIVISION” and you must sign up); you can find goodies like pictures of the June 25th BBQ party and pictures of the Yard of the Month. 3.) The Westgate HOA email, westgateHOA@yahoo.com (send an email to that address to be added to the contact list). The newsletter only comes out once a month and information is a month old, so the other methods are used when something happens last minute and if you missed the newsletter.
Also, I’ve spoken with residents who say they don’t receive a newsletter; if you know a resident who doesn’t get one, please have them email email@example.com with their name and address and the editor will forward the information to the appropriate person at Krenek Printing.

Recommended Tradespeople List on the Westgate Facebook Page
Have you ever needed to call someone for repairs or to have work done, but you didn’t want to just pick someone out of the yellow pages? Well, we’ve begun a document that is our neighborhood’s personal “Angie’s List. All people and businesses listed on it are recommended by people in Westgate who have had personal experiences with them. To submit a name or business, please email Kimberly McGaughy at firstname.lastname@example.org; you should give your name and address (for proof of Westgate residency only, address will not be published), the name and contact information of the business you’re recommending and a description of the experience you had with this person or company (what work they did, maybe a price range, how you felt about their work, etc.). Thanks for helping out your neighbors with this information! We also have a list for businesses actually owned by Westgate residents called “Westgate Residents who provide Services. If you are a resident who owns a business, follow the same process, but instead of a description of a personal experience, provide a description of your services, price range, history of your business, etc. We’d love to support our neighbors! Support your neighbors by checking it out; you might find what you need very close to home! To access the documents, go to www.facebook.com and search for “Westgate Subdivision. Look at the top of the page under “Docs and you’ll see them there! And I started the Recommended Tradespeople list off with one recommendation of my own! Add yours to the list.

BERYL RAMSEY AND WAYNE VOSS TO CHAIR GO RED FOR WOMEN LUNCHEON
PR O MPT - RELIABLE - AFFORDABLE - SINCE 1993
CEO of Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, Beryl Ramsey, returns to Chair the Go Red For Women Luncheon in partnership with CEO of Methodist West Houston Hospital, Wayne Voss. Together, Ramsey and Voss will serve as Co-Chairs and lead efforts to raise awareness that heart disease remains the number one killer of women, but is often preventable with healthy lifestyle choices.
Today, only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is their greatest health threat. More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next three causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Go Red for Women celebrates the energy, passion and power that women can use to band together to wipe out heart disease and stroke. To secure a sponsorship, purchase tables and/or tickets, or for further information, contact Priscilla Luna at 713-610-5071 or email priscilla. email@example.com. For more information about Go Red For Women, visit GoRedForWomen.org or call 1-888-MY-HEART. Go Red For Women is sponsored nationally by Macy’s and Merck & Co., Inc. About the American Heart Association The American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Our mission is to build healthier lives by preventing, treating and defeating these diseases - America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers. We fund cutting-edge research, conduct lifesaving public and professional educational programs, and advocate to protect public health. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through FEBRUARY. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

During the beginning portion of our February meeting we will have Nancie Craft visit with our group to offer us great deals for Rodeo Carnival Tickets. We are looking forward to visiting with her. CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community, as well. Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first Thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00 PM immediately followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road. Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you! If you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church, please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at email@example.com.

La Leche League is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is a simple and natural process, but you may need support and information on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast, working and breastfeeding, avoiding problems and overcoming any difficulties that may occur. Knowing other women who have breastfed their babies can be helpful and reassuring. Having accurate, up-to-date information is also important. Attending La Leche League meetings can help you learn about breastfeeding from other nursing mothers. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not only their questions and concerns but also the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche League can give you the network of support you need. There are numerous meeting locations all over the Houston area. The Cy-Fair group meets on the second Tuesday of the month, at 10:00 AM, in the Berkshire Community Meeting Room, 15607 Berkshire Manor Ln. Babies are welcome! The Group offers an extensive lending library of books, free information and materials for sale. MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN (MYC)
The moment a newborn baby wraps their tiny hand around a parent’s finger is a pivotal moment in the life of any parent. The baby not only tugs on the finger, but on the parent’s heart as well. It is in that awesome moment that the parent begins to understand the unconditional and abounding love that God has for each of us. But soon after the little miracle arrives so do all the questions and sometimes, without any clear answers. The Mothers of Young Children (MYC) group was organized by St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church to minister to families with young children throughout the Northwest Houston community. Both stay at home and working parents are invited to participate in the group. The group supports and prays for one another, shares information and ideas on child rearing and builds lasting friendships. Most importantly, MYC’s focus is on God and God’s presence in families. The MYC ministry includes: • Friday morning Bible study at 9:30 AM (childcare provided!) • Monthly Kids Night In • Mom’s Night Out • Playgroups throughout the year • Service ministries • Online discussion forum The MYC group is an exciting ministry filled with open hearts and lots of energy (and that isn’t including the kids) with a desire to grow in Christ. St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church is located at 17020 West Road, at the corner of West and Queenston. For more information, check out our web site at www.stcuthbert.org or contact Tanya Avery at firstname.lastname@example.org.
