PLAN YOUR GARAGE SALES WISELY - TWO IS THE LIMIT
Two garage sales per year is the limit under Texas law. The Limited Sales, Excise and Use Tax Law says that people who are not operating a business are permitted to have no more than two sales of their goods each year. If you exceed this amount, you will be treated as operating a business and you’ll need to obtain a sales tax permit from the state. Additionally, running a business from your home is against the deed restrictions.

We love dogs, yes we do... We love our community and so should you!
3. The appearance and quality of the common areas are known to affect home sales - not just for how much they sell, but how quickly. 4. The more residents complain about dog waste, the more time the manager must spend on enforcement rather than serving the Association. 5. Uncollected dog waste spreads disease and attracts rodents who feed on pet waste. We love dogs - we really do. We also love our community! That is why the Association is committed to enforcing the county leash law so all residents may enjoy our community. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years! Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you.
Besides being a nuisance, unleashed dogs and uncollected dog waste is a serious problem for our Association.
We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.
Next time you’re tempted to let your dog roam free or leave your dog’s droppings on the lawn, please remember these facts:
LEASH LAW “Harris County”
1. The Environmental Protection Agency is becoming aggressive about enforcing the Clean Water Act. Our Association could be fined if dog waste goes uncollected. 2. Unleashed dogs are not more likely to defecate in neighbor’s yards. Uncollected dog waste may lead to a special assessment. If fined by the EPA, the Association could face a potential special assessment that would be levied against all members - not just dog owners.
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The
custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

HOLIDAY DANGERS TO PETS
Toxic plants and holiday/winter products: Plants and other items associated with the winter and holiday season can be toxic to your pets. What follows is a general guide. Please consult your veterinarian, animal poison control and the manufacturer for specifics. Remember, the earlier you seek treatment, the better for your pet! Low toxicity - poinsettia leaves/stems; balsam/pine/cedar/fir; angel hair (spun glass); Christmas tree preservatives; snow sprays/snow flock; tree ornaments; super glue; styrofoam; icicles (tinsel) and crayons/paints.
• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.
• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

Please note that some items have special problems. For example, whereas angel hair is usually considered to be of low toxicity, it can irritate eyes, skin and the gastrointestinal tract; the content of Christmas tree preservatives varies and often effects depend upon the amount ingested; styrofoam, small parts from Christmas tree ornaments and toys, as well as tinsel, can cause mechanical obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract; snow flock can cause problems if sprayed into the mouth and inhaled and chocolate, of any type, should never be given to a pet. Antifreeze deserves special mention because even a very small amount can be rapidly fatal to pets. www.avma.org

ELECTRICIAN 5 Year Warranty*
Moderate toxicity - fireplace colors/salts; plastic model cement Moderate to high toxicity holly berries and leaves; bubbling lights (methylene chloride); snow scenes (may contain salmonella); aftershaves/perfumes/alcoholic beverages and chocolate (dark is more toxic than milk). Highly toxic - mistletoe (especially berries); expoxy adhesives; and antifreeze.

LOCAL TEACHERS ATTEND TSCA CONVENTION
San Antonio was the site of the recent Texas Speech Communication Association convention (TSCA) which was attended by a group of six current and retired speech teachers and debate coaches from Katy. In addition to numerous interesting, useful and thought provoking sessions on all aspects of teaching speech and debate, several awards were given. Notably among the awards was Secondary Speech Educator of the Year, which was presented to Gay Hollis, James Taylor High School debate coach. She has had a very successful coaching career at Taylor and other schools and is a teacher looked up to by students and colleagues alike. Other teachers attending were the speech and debate coaches from Mayde Creek High School, Greg McGee; from Morton Ranch High School, Carrie Sanguinetti and from Seven Lakes High School, Charli Lennon.
George Tennison being presented award by Sandra Jones of Alief ISD and committee chair.
Rounding out the group were retired Katy teachers Norma Coston and Bo Williamson who currently own Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy. Although retired from teaching and coaching, the two remain active in their professional association and Custom Awards & Engraving donates the award plaques each year for the various categories of Educator of the Year. Both Bo and Norma are Life Members of the association and while Coston has been a member for 32 years, Williamson boasts a 48-year membership. Another winner from our area was George Tennison, speech teacher and debate coach from Olle Middle School in the Alief School District. He was honored as TSCA’s Middle School Speech Educator of the Year. Next year’s convention will be held in Corpus Christi and all speech and debate teachers are encouraged to attend and learn from the sessions provided as well as ideas of colleagues’ they meet. It’s a “once a year” opportunity to experience a “teaching growth spurt” over a short period of time.
CELEBRATION OF LIVESTOCK SHOW & RODEO’S 70TH ANNIVERSARY BRINGS COUNTRY ACT TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Following the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund.
Iva’s Clean & Shine Housecleaning Service Serving all your Home & Office Cleaning Needs
The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients. “We are so excited to feature the Casey Donahew Band to celebrate 70 years of grand achievements within the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo,” says Diana Elder, daughter of L.D. Robinson and co-advisor/director of the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. “In the spirit of my father, we would like to continue to give back to the community by increasing scholarship funds for students through this benefit concert.” Casey Donahew released his fourth studio album, Double Wide Dream, in October 2011. In 2012, the Donahew organization received five nominations at the annual Texas Regional Radio Music awards and in June signed up for professional membership with the Academy of Country Music (ACM).

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

Living Word Lutheran Church MAKES QUILTS FOR KRAUSE CENTER
Each September, the Piecemakers quilting group from Living Word Lutheran Church takes a break from making quilts for Lutheran World Relief to make quilts for the children at The Krause Center in Katy. This year, they presented Tawana Goodwin with twenty quilts. Each child receives a quilt when they arrive at the Center and takes the treasured quilt with them when they leave. During the rest of the year, the Piecemakers make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. These mission quilts go out into the world to provide people in need with the warmth and comfort of a quilt. LWR’s goal in 2013 is to provide 500,000 quilts for people in refugee camps or in areas hit by a natural disaster. The Piecemakers meet twice a month to tie quilts. The public is welcome; if you can tie a knot they need you! For more information, call the church office at 281-392-2300.
