POSTAL THEFT

Postal theft has occurred in VLP. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is aware of this issue. In October, a male exited the passenger side of a Chevrolet Silverado pick up and took a parcel from a homeowner’s doorstep. Please be on the lookout for your home, as well as your neighbors, for any suspicious activity and if necessary, call the sheriff immediately.

HOLIDAY VACATIONS

If you are planning a holiday getaway, please notify Deputy Glentzer of the dates for which you will be away. He is our community deputy and is very familiar with our residents and our property. He will keep an eye on things so you can enjoy your time away. Some additional tips if you are going to be gone are: • Set your alarm and be sure the alarm company’s signs are visible in your yard • Set timers on lights to come on when it gets dark • Have mail and newspaper delivery put on hold • Do not leave spare keys hidden outside • Do not leave notes on the door for deliveries or family/friends • Make sure entries are well lit and light bulbs are new This year, Thanksgiving falls on November 28th.

DID YOU KNOW…

In modern times, the President of the United States, in addition to issuing a proclamation, will “pardon” a turkey, which spares the bird’s life and ensures that it will spend the duration of its life roaming freely on farmland. Year-end holiday travel is forecasted to total 93.3 million, about 1.6 million greater than last year. In a recent study, people on the east coast prefer to actually visit stores to do their Black Friday shopping, while those on the west coast prefer shopping by internet. Approximately 50 million Pumpkin Pies are eaten on Thanksgiving Sources: Wikipedia/Thanksgiving AAA online Ask.com

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Fall is a great time for home improvements, especially when the weather is cooler! While we all love home improvements, please be sure to obtain approval prior to beginning. A complete list of the deed restrictions can be found on the website, as well as through FirstService Residential. These items are mandatory, meaning all residents must abide by them. Things such as landscaping, painting or staining, mailboxes and additions such as sheds are on the list. The architectural committee enforces deed restrictions at all times and it is taken very seriously. Some simple things that help keep our neighborhood beautiful are: • Keeping your grass cut regularly, bushes trimmed and beds free of weeds • Keeping tree limbs trimmed high enough so that people walking do not get hurt and street signs can be easily seen • Replacing dead shrubbery - required along street facing fencing • Keeping fences stained with the approved colors** **Currently a specific item that will FirstService Residential will be looking for. sending letters restrictions are guidelines, we Plus, it helps

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States.

• When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. CY-CHRISTIAN TEAM FOR HALEY’S MIRACLE

A group of Cypress Christian School faculty, students and families participated in the 2013 Be The Match Walk+Run in Sugarland in honor of CCS seventh grade student Haley Cannon. Haley is battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and she received her miracle on July 9, 2013 in the form of a bone marrow transplant from a donor on the international registry. The journey to that day is an incredible and inspiring story, because God had some amazing plans for Haley and her family. CCS teacher Mrs. Caroline Young participated in the event and wrote this about her experience: “I have never been a runner, but on July 10th, I started my first day of “Couch to 5K” training. I also signed up to be a team captain for Team Haley’s Miracle. Our team raised $1,450 to help match volunteer marrow donors with blood cancer patients, to help uninsured patients and to fund research. I started off walking and worked my way up to running. I trained almost every day for 10 weeks and on Saturday, September 14th,” I ran the 5K for Haley! It was a great feeling to cross the finish line for her since she couldn’t get out and run as she was recovering at home from her bone marrow transplant. It was an even better feeling when I signed up for the Bone Marrow Donor Registry. There are so many people who are still waiting for their miracle in the form of a bone marrow donor. It is very easy to sign up. Anyone who is interested can go to the Be The Match at http://bethematch.org/Home.aspx website for more information. Haley’s story was featured on ABC13 news, also. To view, visit http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/video?id=9239527.”

TRACKS-TO-TRAILS IDEA EARNS HOUSTON CHRISTIAN STUDENT A CATALYST AWARD FROM HOUSTON TOMORROW

A Houston Christian High School student’s leadership trip to Turkey inspired his award-winning proposal to convert unused Houston-area train tracks into pedestrian and bike trails. Michael McCreight, a junior, was the only high school student to receive an inaugural Catalyst Award from Houston Tomorrow, which held its recognition ceremony September 26th at the BioScience Research Collaborative. He was selected from students in 13 counties in the Houston region. The Crystal Awards recognize individuals who propose a large-scale catalytic change that would lead Houston to become the home of the healthiest, happiest and most prosperous people in the United States by 2036, Houston’s 200th birthday. Michael’s proposal, called “Turning Old Travels Into New Travels,” explored how to repurpose something old and unused into a healthy, lifestyle-changing amenity for many to access. “The land is already there and nothing would need to be torn down,” he said. While in Turkey this past summer with Global Trek, Houston Christian’s student leadership program offering cultural perspective led by Head of School Stephen Livingston, Michael noticed how “people walked to get places instead of just for exercise.” It reminded him of his own neighborhood, in Houston Heights. “I realized that we have guided trails to walk on versus the busy streets, which encourages our neighborhood to commute more on foot or cycling,” Michael said. “It was then that I realized this would be a good way to try and help Houston.” Former Houston Christian trustee Bill Peel encouraged Michael to enter his tracks-to-trails proposal in the Crystal Awards. The competition required an essay and brief video explaining the idea in detail. This year’s competition recognized individuals in five categories. Adult award categories included Emeritus, Excellence, Engaged and Evolving. The student award category, Emerging, targeted college and high school students. Michael earned the Emerging category for high school students. Houston Tomorrow is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement of life in the Houston area. Houston Christian High School is located at 2700 West Sam Houston Parkway North, at the corner of Kempwood Drive in West Houston. For additional information about Houston Christian, please call 713-5806000 or visit www.houstonchristian.org.
