HOW BEING THANKFUL LEADS TO SELF IMPROVEMENT This year, as we approach Thanksgiving here in the United States, I cannot help but be reminded how many people are out there who are taking personal stock of their situation and are unable to really feel like they have a whole lot to enjoy and be thankful for. While some of us will be spending time and energy with our family and speaking with them about the things that we are thankful for, there will also be those out there who either won’t celebrate, or even those who have stopped caring. These people have allowed negative energy into their lives and all they can focus on is how they lost their jobs and how they hate their lives. Always Think Positive! CHANGING TO POSITIVE THINKING How can we get out of this harmful and negative mind set? Take a moment and think about the one thing that each and every morning you can be thankful for. What on earth could that be? The very fact that you are alive this very moment and able to take the time to read this article is proof of one reason to be thankful! Positive thinking is the art of taking a bad moment, a bad day and finding the one tiny shred of joy in it and magnifying it so that it consumes your entire being. This will lift your spirits and help you to stop saying things like “I hate my life” and “I can’t do anything right”. Thoughts like this can only perpetuate the lie, that you are incapable. You are an amazing creature, a human being, a thinking creative individual who has the freedom to be whatever it is that you desire to be, provided that you can maintain a positive attitude about the situation, and give thanks when necessary. Henry Ford once said “No matter if you think that you can or think that you cannot, you are correct”. What does this statement say to you? You are the master of your own destiny, my friend. Will you embrace positive thinking ; stop saying things like “I hate my life” and start on the path to selfimprovement by deciding that today you can do whatever it is that you set out to do? If the answer to this is yes, then you have just taken the first step on an amazing journey that will serve to better your life, outlook, and yes even your relationships and income. When we think of the idea of being thankful in conjunction with a positive attitude and self-improvement, we are getting to the very root of human compassion. We can be thankful for so much, and yet not have a true attitude of thanks. What comprises the “attitude of thanks”? It is related to the attitude of mindfulness, of being present in the moment and not the past or worrying over the future. When you begin being present in there here and now, you notice things “the song of a bird, the smile on your child’s face and your heart swells. Silently you become thankful for the experiences that you are blessed with. IN CONCLUSION, DON’T SAY “I HATE MY LIFE!” As this thanksgiving comes around this year, take time out to learn how to cultivate an attitude of thanks and on Thanksgiving this year, give your honest effort into remembering all that you have, no matter if you have lost your job, or that that you hate your life. Take this step for you. Becoming a more positive person intent on self-improvement will help you to beat any depression or anxiety that may turn up this holiday season.

AN EXERCISE FOR SELF IMPROVEMENT Let’s try an exercise. You will need: • A notebook • A pen (not a pencil, we want what you write to be written for good) • About 10 mins each morning and evening 1. Write on the first page “My Journal of Thanks” 2. Under that, on the same page write an intention statement, something to the effect of “ This journal is for my exploration of the things I have to be thankful for in my life so that I may begin on the path of self-improvement and positive thinking” 3. After that write a commitment statement “ I, (your name here) will write in this journal Twice a day (or however often you feel that you can commit to) for 6 months (or however long a time period you feel you can commit to) 4. Last but not least, write todays date and sign your commitment statement.
The Lemos Law Firm
Criminal . Personal injury . Family . Wills
On the second page 1. Make a list of three things that you are thankful for that day in a numbered list. 2. Write a short paragraph about how these things enhance your life. 3. After this is done (it shouldn’t take long) go about your day and when things get rough, take a moment and think over these three things and how they make you feel. Think about the thanks you feel for them. 4. Before bed that night, below your first paragraph write a second one about how remembering these things helped you (or not) throughout your day. • The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

CY-CHRISTIAN TEAM FOR HALEY’S MIRACLE A group of Cypress Christian School faculty, students and families participated in the 2013 Be The Match Walk+Run in Sugarland in honor of CCS seventh grade student Haley Cannon. Haley is battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and she received her miracle on July 9, 2013 in the form of a bone marrow transplant from a donor on the international registry. The journey to that day is an incredible and inspiring story, because God had some amazing plans for Haley and her family. CCS teacher Mrs. Caroline Young participated in the event and wrote this about her experience: “I have never been a runner, but on July 10th, I started my first day of “Couch to 5K” training. I also signed up to be a team captain for Team Haley’s Miracle. Our team raised $1,450 to help match volunteer marrow donors with blood cancer patients, to help uninsured patients and to fund research. I started off walking and worked my way up to running. I trained almost every day for 10 weeks and on Saturday, September 14th,” I ran the 5K for Haley! It was a great feeling to cross the finish line for her since she couldn’t get out and run as she was recovering at home from her bone marrow transplant. It was an even better feeling when I signed up for the Bone Marrow Donor Registry. There are so many people who are still waiting for their miracle in the form of a bone marrow donor. It is very easy to sign up. Anyone who is interested can go to the Be The Match at http:// bethematch.org/Home.aspx website for more information. Haley’s story was featured on ABC13 news, also. To view, visit http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/ video?id=9239527.”

TRACKS-TO-TRAILS IDEA EARNS HOUSTON CHRISTIAN STUDENT A CATALYST AWARD FROM HOUSTON TOMORROW
A Houston Christian High School student’s leadership trip to Turkey inspired his award-winning proposal to convert unused Houston-area train tracks into pedestrian and bike trails. Michael McCreight, a junior, was the only high school student to receive an inaugural Catalyst Award from Houston Tomorrow, which held its recognition ceremony September 26th at the BioScience Research Collaborative. He was selected from students in 13 counties in the Houston region. The Crystal Awards recognize individuals who propose a large-scale catalytic change that would lead Houston to become the home of the healthiest, happiest and most prosperous people in the United States by 2036, Houston’s 200th birthday. Michael’s proposal, called “Turning Old Travels Into New Travels,” explored how to repurpose something old and unused into a healthy, lifestyle-changing amenity for many to access. “The land is already there and nothing would need to be torn down,” he said. While in Turkey this past summer with Global Trek, Houston Christian’s student leadership program offering cultural perspective led by Head of School Stephen Livingston, Michael noticed how “people walked to get places instead of just for exercise.” It reminded him of his own neighborhood, in Houston Heights. “I realized that we have guided trails to walk

on versus the busy streets, which encourages our neighborhood to commute more on foot or cycling,” Michael said. “It was then that I realized this would be a good way to try and help Houston.” Former Houston Christian trustee Bill Peel encouraged Michael to enter his tracks-to-trails proposal in the Crystal Awards. The competition required an essay and brief video explaining the idea in detail. This year’s competition recognized individuals in five categories. Adult award categories included Emeritus, Excellence, Engaged and Evolving. The student award category, Emerging, targeted college and high school students. Michael earned the Emerging category for high school students. Houston Tomorrow is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to the improvement of life in the Houston area. Golf Tournaments VETERANS DAY HEROES GOLF TOURNAMENT
Vets Journey Home Texas Inc. is pleased to announce it will be hosting the 1st Annual Military Heroes Charity Golf Tournament this Veterans Day, November 11, 2013! The tournament will take place at one of Houston’s premiere golf facilities, The Club at Falcon Point located in Katy, Texas. We invite you to “take the time” to thank a veteran for their service on this nationally recognized day which recognizes all veterans, living and deceased. The community is invited to participate in the Veterans Day golf tournament. All proceeds will support Vets Journey Home Texas Inc., which is a 501(c) (3) whose mission is to provide healing, hope, honor and homecoming for veterans in need and their families, through education and self-discovery. The program, which was recently recognized at the White House in Washington, DC, allows veterans to meet during a “Closed Retreat” that starts on Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday afternoon. “Proceeds from this tournament will benefit the program which is offered at no cost to veterans,” says Sam Luna, founder of Vets Journey Home Texas Inc. The program benefits veterans with post-traumatic stress (PTS) and mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) but any veteran that applies is accepted. Recently after receiving the Medal of Honor, Ty Carter, called on Americans to “take the time to learn about the invisible wounds. Know that a soldier or veteran, suffering from post-traumatic stress, is one of the most passionate, dedicated men or women you will ever meet. Know that they are not damaged. They are simply burdened with living when others did not. Know that they, we, are not defeated - are never defeated. We are resilient and will emerge stronger over time.” At this golf tournament we will be honoring veterans that have made significant sacrifices/contributions to our country. It is our sincere hope that individuals and local companies will consider sponsoring a portion of the event by selecting a corporate sponsorship package, donating to the silent auction, or participating in the golf tournament. Breakfast and lunch are provided for the golfers. Lunch is available for $20, if you just want to come eat with us. Take a shot at a Million Dollars on a Par 3!! And, come see the Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial Wall! (www.rollingthundertx2.com). We
expect 300 people the day of the event, including many veterans and some active duty personnel! Come thank them for their service. Registration begins on Veterans Day, November 11th, at 7:00 AM and the golf tournament follows at 8:30 AM. For more information on becoming a sponsor, please contact Samuel Luna at 281-395-9152 or visit www.journeyhometexas. com. You can also just purchase your meals at the website.

CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Many young people don’t have strong positive adult influences in their lives to help guide them through these crucial years. Mentoring makes a difference in both the life of the youth and our community. A commitment of 1 hour weekly is all we ask. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.email@example.com or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
12010 Fullers Grant Ct Cypress, TX 77433
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact email@example.com or see www. ncjwhouston.org. Join NCJW in celebrating 100 years of helping women, children and families in Houston through advocacy and community service. Celebrate our 100th anniversary with us at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on November 23, 2013 (firstname.lastname@example.org).
