Scoop your pet’s poop

1. In late February/Early March, it is critical to apply a preemergence herbicide. This will prevent most annual weeds from germinating.

Please remember to be respectful of your neighbors’ yards and the community grounds. When you take your pet for a walk, come prepared with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. If your pet poops during your walk, please scoop and trash. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show that you respect your fellow neighbors’ and our beautiful community.

2. The next step in a good turf management program, which will also apply to the homeowners, is to grow the most vigorous strand of Bermuda grass turf that we can develop. 3. The key element, as our results have shown, is a high quality NITROGEN sources that are slow release in the fertilizer blends in the summer months. The healthy, thick turf will help us to shield out broadleaf weeds and grasses as they encroach. 4. Preferably within this canopy, we will have established a pre-emergence barrier. Our choice has been Barricade 65WDG sprayed in a liquid application. We see up to 12 weeks of preventative control with this treatment. 5. In April, prior to the hot and humid conditions we provide a blanket application of Trimec Classic, to all turf areas at low rates to target perennials such as dandelion, plantain and the Buckhorn plantain. We pull away from Trimec when the temperatures reach 85 degrees. 6. We then begin to target Dallas grass and Johnson grass with repeat applications of Celsius herbicide, which also begins the program for treatment of the emerging Dove weed. (We have found that it usually will take a minimum of three applications to get control, even with the pre-emerge barrier in place.) 7. The next challenge, we will conquer, is the problem of Nut sedge in the turf. Our key to nut sedge is early detection. Watch for it each week right after the mowing occurs. Treat the areas with certainty and a non-ionic surfactant and plan on a followup in 14 days.

Reminders Reminder that trash cans are to be stored out of public view, except for on designated trash days. This helps keep the community looking good. Please remember to care for your yard. A well maintained yard is not only pleasing to the eye, but also helps keep our neighborhood values up.

The MUD taxes the residents pay help pay for the streetlights whether they work or not. If a streetlight is out or not working properly, please call 713-207-2222 and report the problem. Each pole has a number on it and you will need to give this number to the operator as well as the names of the closest streets. Last year we had a couple of lights out and the result was vandalism to several mailboxes. We need all lights working to keep our neighborhood safe. Thanks again to the Board of Directors at Ft. Bend County MUD #37 for saving us the cost of these lights.

It is important to remember to always follow labeled directions or solicit the expertise of a licensed chemical applicator.

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

A Brief History of St Patrick’s Day The story of St. Patrick’s Day begins around 385 A.D. with a man named Maewyn, who at age 16, was sold into slavery, which brought him closer to God. He managed to escape slavery and headed to a monastery in Gaul to study, where he adopted the Christian name “Patrick.” For the next 30 years, he traveled throughout the country, setting up monasteries and converting the natives. After his death in 461 (on March 17th), he was declared a saint. So what happened from there? The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was in America in New York City in 1762, not Ireland, and consisted of Irish soldiers in the English military marching through the city. This was a chance for the soldiers to reconnect with their heritage.

281-617-2231 Ireland, on the other hand, does not have such a long history of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. This changed around 1995, when the government made a push to use St. Patrick’s Day as a way to drive tourism and to showcase Ireland to the rest of the world. Parades and celebrations are now common in Ireland around this day (in fact, their celebrations last several days) and some one million people took part in last year’s festivities in Dublin. When people nowadays think of this day, they get an image of the shamrock in their head. Why? Its origins are rooted in Patrick himself. He used the shamrock as a way to show how the trinity works: three separate elements of the same entity.

Fix Your Body Boredom!

Tired of not seeing results from those hours at the gym? Salads not doing it for you anymore? Check out some of my personal tips. I promise, you WILL see changes and get “unbored” of your body! • Look in the mirror - like what you see? Make it better. Bored with the image? Fix it now. • Get off that treadmill - Jump onto the exercise bike and SPIN. YES - you can do this! • Good-bye sit-ups - Hanging leg pull-ups, planks, reverse crunches are your new friends. • So long to push-ups - Chin ups will get you those strong biceps quicker. • Close your mouth - Trimming that muffin top begins with watching what you eat. • Fast food 1x per month NOT 21x a week - Dietitians recommend fast food ONLY 1x per month. • Do something new NOW - Take a Zumba class, join a local martial arts school, Crossfit; do something new! • No more excuses - Saying you don’t have time means you have time to make excuses. Get up and get going!

Planting the Right Tree in the Right Place CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way.

Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees, crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected. If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line. CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its distance from power lines before planting. For more information on safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit

If you have any fabric (cotton is the best) or old sheets, let me know and I can come get it from you or you can drop it off at a school near you and I can collect it there. GOLF TOURNAMENTS Talan Holmes Charity Golf Classic Talan Holmes Charity Golf Classic is a Golf Tournament that has one main goal. We are all about providing funds to a group of people who are born with Tebial Hemimelia (TH from here on). TH is a rare malformation, 1:1,000,000 or lack of formation of the Tibia which is the weight bearing bone in the bottom of the leg. This tournament started out to pay the medical expenses of Talan Holmes, the tournament chairman’s son. Talan has undergone his first surgery and is now working with his first prosthesis trying to learn to walk. Many families, like the Holmes family, are unaware of TH and until delivery don’t know that their child has TH. Our goal, while still paying the medical expenses of Talan, is to help other families that may not have the ability to raise their own funds or simply can’t raise enough to get their child the prosthesis that he or she needs. The Golf Tournament is on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the River Ridge Gold Club, 3133 Brazos Oak Lane, Sealy, TX 77474. Registration begins - 6:30 AM, Breakfast - 7:00 AM and Event Start Time - 9:00 AM For more information about the tournament, sign up to be a sponsor and to register, visit THCGC is a 501c3 organization.

The purpose of the Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is to increase exposure of jazz, to extend jazz education for developing musicians and to provide entertainment of the jazz music medium in the Katy and West Houston areas. The Festival’s activities are noncompetitive and dedicated to the development and preservation of this truly American art form. The Katy/West Houston Jazz Festival is also a uniquely different event for jazz music patrons. All attendees have the opportunity to hear big bands and combos comprised of student jazz musicians throughout the day, as well as featured guitar artists and aspiring music groups, via the component known as the Katy Guitar Fest. Each day then can be completed by attending the Featured Concerts on Friday and Saturday nights by world-renown jazz recording artists. Throughout the day an exhibit of outstanding visual artwork, by area and national artists, known as ARTkaty is on display and provides the opportunity for attendees to view, enjoy, and purchase fine artwork of the highest quality. More information about the featured jazz artists, featured guitar artists, and visual artists can be found on the website: When you have reached the website, you can sign up for updates on the artists and latest information pertaining to the Festival and the professional artists! Keep Kids Connected Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday, March 3rd at 6 pm at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Old Katy. The event will start with an enchilada dinner from 5-6 pm for $6 for anyone who is interested. The Bingo Fundraiser is $25 per person for 12 games (on 9 cards for each game) with a free bingo dauber for each player. For more information, email Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection - If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling Program. The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research. Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected. Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email

KATY TKD ACADEMY’S C3 BOOSTER CLUB COLLECTS TOYS & SUPPLIES FOR TOTS & MARINES Each year the Katy TaeKwonDo Academy’s C3 Booster Club holds several community events that benefit the Katy community. In December, the C3 Booster Club once again partnered with the U.S. Marines in their Toys For Tots toy drive and this year added a second collection drive - gathering supplies for an active Marine platoon. The generosity of Katy TKD Academy students and C3 Booster Club members was evident as toys mounded in Toys For Tots collection boxes. On “delivery day” Marine representatives joined academy students and staff to celebrate with a photo and a cheer to send off the toys to needy boys and girls.

BEARS AND TIGERS GIVE BACK! In December 2011, Beckendorff Junior High students participated in an annual campus community outreach program, “Operation Teddy Bear.” The students used their talents to create and design stuffed bears to bring smiles to children staying or visiting local hospitals.

This year, in conjunction with the Katy ISD Sister School program, members of the Beckendorff Pep Squad, Cheerleading and Teen Leadership Program, teamed up with Katy Junior High students to stuff teddy bears and tigers, plus create t-shirts of inspiration for each stuffed animal. The stuffed bears and tigers were then donated to children at Memorial Hermann and Texas Children’s Hospitals West Campus here

BECKENDORFF JUNIOR HIGH AND KATY JUNIOR HIGH SISTER SCHOOL PROGRAM The Beckendorff Junior High School Student Council sponsored a food drive to benefit the KJH Backpack Buddy Program. BDJH and KJH are sister schools. The sister school program is designed to have two schools in the district work together in ways that both schools benefit from the relationship. The administration and the PTA’s have outlined four events they plan to do together this year involving various groups within the school. Our first event was the PTA Board Breakfast in which the boards from both PTA boards met and shared ideas. Our second event was the food drive benefiting the KJH Backpack Buddy Program; this was sponsored by the BDJH student council. Students organized the collection and distribution of needed food items, some toiletry items and a good amount of school supplies. The Backpack Buddy Program is designed to provide assistance to some of the students in need at KJH.

The Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra returns to Katy on Saturday, March 24th, joining with the St. Peter’s United Methodist Church Choir, to present Theodore Dubois’s The Seven Last Words of Christ. The chamber concert begins at 7:30 PM at the church, located at 20775 Kingsland Blvd. The Seven Last Words of Christ provides a musical setting for seven phrases spoken by Jesus Christ while he hung dying on the cross. The phrases, taken from all four Gospels, are often shared in churches during Holy Week to help Christians reflect on the meaning of Good Friday.   FBSO will accompany the choir with a smaller chamber orchestra consisting of strings and woodwinds. FBSO is under the direction of Katy resident Dr. Hector Agüero. The St. Peter’s choir is under the direction of David Galasso.   General admission tickets are $10 each in advance or at the door. To purchase tickets, visit or call 281-276-9642.

Following the services, children will be invited to an “instrument petting zoo” where they can see and hear up-close demonstrations of the orchestra instruments. Thursday, April 5th - Maundy Thursday The Maundy Thursday worship service will be held at 7 pm. Special Event: Temple Sinai honored fifteen new member families at Friday night Shabbat services on January 20th by calling them up to the bimah for a special blessing by Rabbi Annie Belford. The thirteen new families who were present stood under a large tallit that was held up by families with upwards of twenty years’ membership, effectively blending the newest with the “oldest” Sinai members. Several prospective members were also recognized and welcomed to the Temple.
