from the Parkway Lakes Newsletter Committee Editor! We each want to do our parts to keep or families, homes and community safe. One of our homeowners reported that there were a group of teens loitering at the pool area. These teens did not belong to our neighborhood and were involved in unsafe activities. Currently we do not have a lifeguard for the pool and there is concern about the lighting in various areas. Please email me Deborahkgreen@ AOL.com if you have concerns regarding the safety and security of our community. Here are a few tips: • Make sure you keep your home secure. Doors to the outside of your home should be closed and locked for safety. This includes your garage door. Only open the door for those you know or are expecting and ask for identification and verification of repairmen. • Don’t leave cash or valuables in your vehicle in plain sight and keep the doors locked. • If you are going on vacation, ask a neighbor keep an eye out for your home and pick up your newspaper. • Provide a list of emergency numbers for your children in case of an emergency. • Drive slowly in the community and be alert to children playing. • Provide a helmet and brightly colored reflective clothing for your children riding bikes. • Alert the police to any suspicious or illegal activities. • Most of all get to know now your neighbors and their family. Deborah K. Green, Parkway Lakes Newsletter Committee Editor Deborahkgreen@AOL.com

You may gift your Valentine with roses. Did you know that each rose color has a different meaning? Check it out: • Red Red roses are the traditional symbol for love and romance and a time-honored way to say “I love you.” The red rose has long symbolized beauty and perfection. A bouquet of red roses is the perfect way to express your deep feelings for someone special. • Pink As a symbol of grace and elegance, the pink rose is often given as an expression of admiration. Pink roses can also convey appreciation as well as joyfulness. Pink rose bouquets often impart a gentler meaning than their red counterparts. • Yellow The bright, sunny color of yellow roses evokes a feeling of warmth and happiness. The warm feelings associated with the yellow rose are often akin to those shared with a true friend. As such, the yellow rose is an ideal symbol for joy and friendship. • White White roses represent innocence and purity and are traditionally associated with marriages and new beginnings. The white rose is also a symbol of honor and reverence, and white rose arrangements are often used as an expression of remembrance. • Orange With their blazing energy, orange roses are the embodiment of desire and enthusiasm. Orange roses often symbolize passion and excitement and are an expression of fervent romance. A bouquet of orange roses will send a meaningful message. • Lavender The unique beauty of the lavender rose has captured many hearts and imaginations. With their fantastical appearance, lavender roses are a perfect symbol of enchantment. The lavender rose is also traditionally used to express feelings of love at first sight.

Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday, March 3rd at 6 pm at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Old Katy. The event will start with an enchilada dinner from 5-6 pm for $6 for anyone who is interested. The Bingo Fundraiser is $25 per person for 12 games (on 9 cards for each game) with a free bingo dauber for each player. For more information, email email@example.com. Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection - If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling Program. The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank Pin Oak Branch location from 9 am-12 pm. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research. Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected.
Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Connected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email firstname.lastname@example.org.

Refreshments will be served. For details on the location or for answers to any other questions you may have, please call the Baha’i Faith of Fort Bend County at 281-395-9026.

LIBRARIES ANNOUNCE ADDITION OF FAMILY READING CLUB THIS WINTER
The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults has inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club began on Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will continue for six weeks through March 3, 2012 at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club SignUp” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system. For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677 or the library branch nearest you.

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in March. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. RUOK Program Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.
ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Ask About Our Whitening for Life Program Some restrictions may apply. Call for details. Offer good for 60 days.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.

The Pearl Harbor Remembrance ceremony was led by Colonel (Ret) Mike Mastrangelo, Commander, VFW Post 9182. Commander Mastrangelo stands next to the World War II section of the newly renovated military museum, which is open to the public, located on George Bush Drive, in Katy, Texas. Colonel (Ret) Mike Mastranglo, Commander, VFW Post 9182, addresses the local boy scouts, veterans and the public. Members share their memories from World War II. Many can be heard from the audience reciting the words from President Roosevelt’s address on December 8, 1941, from memory, as the recording is being played for all in attendance. Others share their memories of military service during World War II and their thoughts about visiting the USS Arizona Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii after the war.
PEARL HARBOR REMEMBERED AT VFW Fifteen hundred (1,500) civilians perished on this day, December 7, 1941, known as Pearl Harbor Day, in the premeditated invasion against the United States by the Japanese. There was wide spread fear in the United States, as the US was caught virtually unprepared and paid a horrific price. President Roosevelt addressed the Congress the next day and rallied the American people. Four years later the United States received an unconditional surrender and World War II ended in 1945. World War II stretched from 1940 to 1945. There are 405,399 recorded deaths and 670,846 wounded. Totaling 1,076,845 dead and wounded. Photos taken by Rodney Smith, VFW Photographer

May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are.
