US Military K-9 Fund, Inc. would like to thank our supporters, who are helping us send “care packages” designed especially for the military dogs deployed with our troops to the Middle East. We are so grateful to the Girl Scouts that have given some of their cookie money to us, Longenbaugh Vet Hospital, Rover Oaks Pet Resort, Animal Hospital Jones Road, Cypress Cares, Copperfield Women’s Club and others for enabling us to continue sending the “care packages” to the dogs that are saving lives. We are celebrating having been able to send over 150 boxes so far. And we have only just begun… With HELP from everyone who has dogs or loves dogs, we can make a difference in these dogs ability to keep our men and women safer by sensing what humans cannot. They go where machines cannot. They smell what machines cannot. And, they are a “force multiplier.” Help us send them dog boots, dog goggles, cooling/warming vests, toys, treats and grooming items. Their handlers get some things too! Go to to learn more.

The Christmas Revels: Musical Theater in Celebration of the Winter Solstice The darkest time of the year casts a powerful spell over nearly every culture in the northern hemisphere, and has given birth to countless ways of celebrating the winter solstice. Many of the present-day holiday rituals in our country originate in the Nordic/German traditions and come flavored with the spices of Europe. We invite you to take a little journey to early nineteenth-century Bavaria and the surrounding regions to explore the roots of modern Christmas. As always, this interactive family friendly show will include superb music, lovely costumes, and traditional dances. Our adult and children’s choruses will add to the warmth, as will performances by accomplished guest artists, including an Alphorn duet and yodlers, who are genuine interpreters of Bavarian culture. A keepsake booklet containing information about the Bavarian celebrations and songs featured in the show is included with the ticket. Don’t miss this heartwarming event and join in with our nationwide family of returning Revels fans. The 2011 Christmas Revels takes place Dec. 10th-11th & 17th-18th Saturdays 2:30 PM & 7:00 PM · Sundays at 2:30 PM Wortham Theater, entrance 16 from Cullen blvd. at the University of Houston Campus, Houston, Texas. To be a KEYS Mentor, you need: • A belief in the potential of every child • Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA • One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year • Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin • Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

The Schools FIRST accountability rating system assigns one of four ratings, with the highest being Superior Achievement, followed by Above Standard Achievement, Standard Achievement and Substandard Achievement. Approximately 784 out of the 1,029 school districts in Texas received the Superior Achievement rating this year. Katy ISD also recently announced that it has been named a FiveStart District in the Texas Comptroller’s Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST) – one of only 23 districts in Texas to receive this rank for two consecutive years.

On Saturday October 15 th , the Cinco Ranch High School Robotics Team 624 (Team “CRyptonite”) held the first of their pre-season safety training sessions. The team holds these before the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®) build season, which begins in January when the new game challenge is revealed and the team then has 6 weeks to build a new robot. The training sessions are a way to stay involved with robotics during the fall off-season and to instruct new members so they have the knowledge and skills to work on the robot when the build season begins. Returning members also attend, to help teach the new members and to work on off-season projects. The team also spent time decommissioning some old robots to reuse parts for their upcoming season. Team 624 will be competing in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center on April 5 - 7, 2012. Cinco Ranch High School’s Team 624 (Cryptonite) Robotics competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The FIRST program encourages the development of technical, analytical and engineering problem solving skills. Students learn to take a complex task and use critical thinking and creativity to overcome challenges. The competitions combine the excitement of sports with science and technology to create a unique varsity Sport for the Mind™. For more information on Team 624 and FIRST Robotics Competition, visit http://

PACK 542 HONORS THOMAS PARK WITH A TREE FOR ARBOR DAY Thomas Park in Old Katy will be a little more colorful this fall thanks to efforts of the Cub Scouts of Pack 542. The Scouts spent a sunny Sunday afternoon planting a tree in honor of Arbor Day. Not only will the tree planting help beautify Thomas Park, but it helped the Scouts develop a sense of community involvement and giving back through service to the community. The kids put some effort into life and they will see the benefits down the road, especially when they return to visit the Park after many years.

Siding Products

Christin Vogel, a member of Girl Scout Troop 17229, recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest recognition a Cadette Girl Scout can achieve. The teens’ books were donated to the Krause Center in Katy. The activity kits were assembled and divided according to age and gender; they benefitted the children coming into Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus Emergency Center. Christin also donated band-aids, stickers and bubbles to the TCH Emergency Center. Christin completed her Silver Award project earlier this year, while she was in the eighth grade. Healthy Holiday Eating Who says you’ll gain weight during the holidays? Only YOU. You can avoid the extra pounds tempting you to overeat this holiday season with one simple tool: will power. Do check out these tips as you maintain - or even lose - weight these next few weeks: Eat before you go to a party. This is one of the best tricks to avoid overeating at gatherings. Add fiber rich foods (ex. 100% whole wheat) to whatever you eat so you’ll feel full. Plus, eating fruit will help curb that sweet tooth. Get up and move! Saying you’re too busy is not an explanation - it’s an excuse. You can exercise inside and outside the home - hit the gym, walking/running, tennis, bootcamp, yoga, jump rope, biking, anything. Most cable/dish networks even offer a fitness channel. Get moving. No excuses! Pre-cut your foods. Pre-cut your foods to turn 1 piece into 2, 3 or more pieces. Your plate looks fuller meaning you have enough food and won’t crave seconds. One tortilla chip can be broken into 4 or more pieces to avoid eating too many and dipping too much. Keep a food journal. Write down everything, starting NOW, that you eat. Review your entries daily and see what needs to be added and taken out of your diet. Don’t bring it home. Tempted by chips? Cookies? Pumpkin pie? Don’t buy it when at the market. Even better - avoid those aisles when shopping for food.

Eat THIS, not THAT for the Holidays! ‘Tis the season of over-indulgence in rich, delicious and unhealthy food. But panic not. You can still enjoy all the goodies of the season, thanks to sensible eating. Here are healthy eating tips for the Christmas season. • Feast for a couple of days, then return to normal. Buy less and don’t let the holiday season turn into an excuse for a month of bingeing. • Cut up a box of mini-sticks of celery and nibble on them when you need a snack. Celery keeps blood pressure low, and helps lower cholesterol too. • Keep reading the labels, but don’t be fooled. Are ‘lite’ potato chips or crisps really a great health option? Yes, you could save a worthwhile 20 calories on a packet - but they’re still a high-fat food, so go easy. • Out of sight is out of mouth. Hide away indulgent puddings, cream and other temptations in the salad drawer, so they don’t beckon every time you open the fridge door. • Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, which improves mood and reduces anxiety. Eat just 3 a day. • If you’re used to working out, have a vigorous session the day before a feast and you’ll burn extra calories more efficiently. • Cinnamon balances blood sugar and reduces ill effects of sweet foods. Stir a little into tea or coffee. • Watch portion sizes like a hawk. Forego the extra spoonful, the second mince pie, never pile food high. Enjoy everything, say no to nothing - but do it all in moderation. • At the supermarket, avoid huge ‘bargain’ packs of special nuts, biscuits etc. Buy smaller sizes and cut the temptation. • Serve two vegetables with each meal (try not to smother them in cream sauce) and put salad greens in every sandwich.
