Happy Holidays from the Falcon Point East Board of Directors and Community Volunteers! CHRISTMAS SAFETY It’s time for cheer, good will and SAFETY. Be conscious of fire and safety hazards while decorating and maintaining Christmas trees indoors. Burning candles should never be left unattended and drying Christmas trees can be particularly dangerous towards the end of the holiday season when they have dried out. Twinkling lights on the roof are beautiful but be safe climbing that ladder. Get someone to help hold the ladder and work as a team.
HELPING NEIGHBORS DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON Are you or your neighbors going out of town? Lend a hand and pick up the paper or offer to keep an eye out while they are away. If you see suspicious activity in or around your neighborhood call the sheriff’s department at 281-341-4665.
FIREWORKS Remember fireworks are prohibited as a deed restriction in Falcon Point East. That means no firecrackers or sparklers. Fines of as much as $200 per incidence can result.
HOLIDAY YARD DECORATIONS Holiday Yard decorations are fun and festive. Make it a point to join in the festivities with colorful shrubs and plants to compliment your lighting décor. Everyone enjoys a bright holiday display on a well-kept lawn! Be considerate of your neighbors and don’t keep lighting displays on after 10:00 PM.
DEED RESTRICTIONS • • • •
Trash cans are to be stored either in the garage or behind the fence out of sight. Fertilize, treat and water your lawn and trees when possible. Do not park cars in the street overnight. Please remember pets should be on a leash at all times and cleaned up after. Pets are not allowed around the pool area.

Don’t forget to give your 6-digit code to your maids, yard assistants, friends or others. You may also purchase a card for $10 (call Jon Benson at 281-693-5583). We have gone way over budget with damaged gates this year! We need help from all residents!
In an effort to get information out to our residents in a timely manner, we are asking homeowners to voluntarily submit their email addresses to be included on a mailing list for Falcon Point use only. Sending email will allow us to keep homeowners informed of upcoming events (garage sale, National Night Out, etc.), scheduled maintenance (gate repair, etc.) and other issues of concern to our neighborhood. Your email information will be kept confidential. We will not sell or give it away to anyone. If you would like to participate, send your name, physical address and email address to Meridith Wehrle at firstname.lastname@example.org.
HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY? Please call the AMI Resource Center at 713-932-1122 or 800-932-9449. We are ready with your answers.
PETS Please remember your pets must be on a leash at all times and any waste must be picked up. Animals are not allowed at the community park/pool area.
trash REMINDER Trash receptacles and recycle bins must be stored in garage or behind house out of public view on non-trash days. This is unsightly and is not the image we want to present in our community. Trash pickup days are Tuesday and Friday. Friday is heavy trash day. Trash should not be placed at curb before 6:00 PM the night before trash is picked up. Please respect the deed restrictions.
SPEEDING If you observe speeding cars in your area, you can contact the Sheriff’s Department at 281-341-4665 to request patrols so that speeding is discouraged. The Sheriff’s Department has been given authority to enforce traffic laws on our private streets.

Cinco Ranch High School Robotics Team Starts Pre-Season Training Sessions On Saturday October 15th, the Cinco Ranch High School Robotics Team 624 (Team “CRyptonite”) held the first of their pre-season safety training sessions. The team holds these before the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®) build season, which begins in January when the new game challenge is revealed and the team then has 6 weeks to build a new robot. The training sessions are a way to stay involved with robotics during the fall off-season and to instruct new members so they have the knowledge and skills to work on the robot when the build season begins. Returning members also attend, to help teach the new members and to work on off-season projects. The team also spent time decommissioning some old robots to reuse parts for their upcoming season. Team 624 will be competing in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center on April 5 - 7, 2012. Cinco Ranch High School’s Team 624 (Cryptonite) Robotics competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The FIRST program encourages the development of technical, analytical and engineering problem solving skills. Students learn to take a complex task and use critical thinking and creativity to overcome challenges. CRHS student Christin Vogel Earns Silver Award Christin Vogel, a member of Girl Scout Troop 17229, recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest recognition a Cadette Girl Scout can achieve. The teens’ books were donated to the Krause Center in Katy. The activity kits were assembled and divided according to age and gender; they benefitted the children coming into Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus Emergency Center. Christin also donated band-aids, stickers and bubbles to the TCH Emergency Center. Christin completed her Silver Award project earlier this year, while she was in the eighth grade. Christin is currently a freshman at Cinco Ranch High School.

PACK 542 HONORS THOMAS PARK WITH A TREE FOR ARBOR DAY Thomas Park in Old Katy will be a little more colorful this fall thanks to efforts of the Cub Scouts of Pack 542. The Scouts spent a sunny Sunday afternoon planting a tree in honor of Arbor Day. Not only will the tree planting help beautify Thomas Park, but it helped the Scouts develop a sense of community involvement and giving back through service to the community. The kids put some effort into life and they will see the benefits down the road, especially when they return to visit the Park after many years.

By covering up the existing crushed concrete with decomposed granite, the resurfacing project offers universal accessibility to people in wheelchairs, children in strollers and emergency vehicles. Andrew has held numerous leadership positions within his troop, such as Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader and Order of the Arrow Representative. He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. He has also earned over 100 merit badges. Andrew completed his Eagle project earlier this year, while he was in the tenth grade. Andrew is currently a junior at Cinco Ranch High School. Troop 73 is chartered through Memorial Lutheran Church of Katy.

Beat the Holiday Blues Check out these few tips on how to beat the holiday blues and be happy! • Be realistic. Some people experience not enough family, fun, and friendship so be kind to yourself. • Create your own traditions. As families change and grow, traditions change, too. As long as you do the traditions with a joyful heart, the celebrations you create will become your family’s cherished rituals. • Help others. It is the best antidote to self-pity and seasonal sadness. Find someone who is struggling more than you are, lend them a helping hand and remember the real meaning of the holidays. • Seek sacred space. Visit a place of worship. Simply sitting in a sacred space can remind you of the true meaning of the holidays. • Take care of your body. Eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise and get plenty of rest. The littlest bit of movement will lift your spirits and reducing the amount of junk food, sugar and alcohol you consume will reduce your blues. • Be financially responsible. Overspending during the holidays will not only increase your stress now, but will also leave you feeling anxious as you struggle to pay the bills. Buck the holiday system of excessive gift-giving and practice simplicity, creativity and basic human kindness.

• Grieve. If a friend or family member has recently died, honor their memory. Create an altar with pictures of those you love; light candles every night for someone you have lost; play sacred music and allow yourself to cry, remember, heal. • Forgive. Forgive all sorts of people this holiday season. Read the stories of who have used forgiveness to move mountains. If they can do it, so can we. • Love... everything. Love it all. From the corny Christmas music to the house guests who won’t leave. Love even the hard times; even the cranky and crooked people of the world; even yourself, with all of your imperfections.

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. The next training will be in January. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
RUOK Program Fort Bend House of Hope - Bringing Healing and Restoration to Hurting Teens and Their Families House of Hope Fort Bend is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with National House of Hope. We are a Christ-centered non-residential program working with troubled teens and their parents. Our six month program is set up to provide weekly counseling for the teens and parents. Our goal is to be a catalyst in healing and restoration in broken families. We use a modest sliding scale and books are an additional fee. We also present F.A.M.I.L.Y. Rules Workshops for schools and other groups. This program is for any faith, culture and ethnicity in assisting parents to “parent with purpose.” If your family is in chaos, then this program is for you! This family system is designed to start with children at the age of 5 through 18 teaching authority, consequences, affirmation and being consistent and correct as parents. We have certified F.AM.I.L.Y. Rules Counselors available to assist you. Our volunteers have been screened with background checks and approved by the Fort Bend Juvenile Probation Department. For more information regarding our organization, check out our website at www. houseofhope-fortbend.org, or contact Janeen Smith at 832-764-1123, firstname.lastname@example.org.
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
