Bear Creek Plantation Official Newsletter

Congratulations to 6455 Old Hickory for being the August 2013 Yard of the Month. Enjoy that $50 gift certificate to Lowes and keep up the great work!

February marks the annual election of the Board of Directors. Each year, two or three members go through re-election for their two-year terms. This year, the current President, Greg Shelley, intends to step down after over two years, leaving an open position. If you are interested in joining the Board, please contact KPM Management as soon as possible so they can be sure to include your name on the ballot in February. Once the general election is over, the Board will vote internally to assign specific roles.

Officer Williams, who regularly patrols our neighborhood, suggests that more of us use our porch lights and other landscape lighting, especially during the summer months. He noticed recently that many of the neighbors rarely utilize their lighting, which tends to be a big crime deterrent and he wanted to encourage us all to utilize the lights we have. He also suggests that we get to know our neighbors as much as possible and help to look after each other’s property. Fortunately, crime in our specific subdivision is very minimal, thanks in part to their frequent patrols. Finally, he encourages you to contact KPM Management if you have any specific areas of concern, so that they might get a chance to focus on other areas of need in the coming weeks and months.

16100 Cairnway, Suite 285 PARKING CARS IN THE STREET

We realize it is sometimes necessary to park your cars in the street. The neighborhood bylaws prohibit the parking of inoperable vehicles in the street and operable vehicles are expected to be regularly used/ moved when parked there. We ask that you do your best to be aware of your neighbors’ driveways when parking streetside, so you do not block their ability to safely get in and out. Also, please try not to park directly across from a driveway, as this is a common cause of accidents. While we all should take extra caution when backing out, we are creatures of habit and we tend to get into a routine and in a hurry, so we might not notice that there is a new obstacle waiting for us across the street. That scene has played out on a number of occasions already. Thanks in advance for continuing to look out for each other.

Bear Creek Plantation Board Meetings are the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Club House starting at 7 PM. Your Board of Directors: Rick Bennett - Vice President Tom Ireland - Treasurer George Dartez - Secretary Greg Shelley - President Rafael Viesca - Director Community website: The Management Company is KPM Management located at 16360 Park Ten Place Suite 225 Houston, TX 77084, phone 281685-3090 for the office line and fax 281-599-8822. Email: mgmt@ Both the new Board of Directors and KPM Management will work together to be accountable on the expenses of the Community and communicative with the homeowners.

KPM Management is the company hired by our neighborhood association to manage many aspects of our deed-restricted community. They provide many accounting, administrative and consulting services that help to increase safety and maximize our property values, while working with the all-volunteer Board of Directors to keep our annual dues at a minimum. As a result, they are expected to patrol the neighborhood throughout the month, on varying days to look for deed restriction violations. In general, we ask them to generate the first “reminder” letter automatically when they see a violation or whenever they confirm one, which came from a neighbor complaint. If you have

a unique situation, which might result in the need to temporarily violate the deed restrictions, please give them a call at 281-685-3090 and let them know the situation and the expected time frame, so we can avoid the issuance of any unnecessary letters. Keep in mind, occasionally mistakes are made and the wrong address receives a letter - the best thing to do in this and all other situations is to contact the management company to make them aware of the mistake and/or to let them know that you have either corrected the situation or need a temporary exemption from the covenant. For fairness’ sake, the Board of Directors asks the management company to call ‘em like they see ‘em, assuming they have received no advanced notice of extenuating circumstances, but in truth, they will not ever be able to identify every single possible violation on each and every drive through, nor do we think the scrutiny necessary for such is in the best interest of our community. The ultimate responsibility of the Board of Directors is to make decisions regarding situations where the homeowner simply refuses to comply with the community’s established covenants, in spite of repeated “reminder” attempts. We typically hope the individual can give us a defensible reason for giving an exception or temporary reprieve and the last thing any of us want is to be in conflict with any of our neighbors, but we are nonetheless tasked with the expectation that we uphold the community’s by-laws. With that said, on a typical week, less than 6% of the homeowners receive deed restriction letters and the vast majority have already taken or do quickly take action to correct them. As your fellow neighbors, we appreciate every one of you who have taken measures to correct any problems that may have arisen over the years. We also definitely appreciate your willingness to work with us to do whatever is in our community’s control to maintain the maximum possible property values for everyone. When we all work together, we minimize the cost and maximize the benefit for the community at large. Oh and by the way, no need to get offended if you do receive a letter, as many, if not most of us can relate to the experience for one reason or another. Thanks again!

When a mailbox is put into use for the purposes of sending and receiving mail, it becomes federal property. Mailbox tampering is considered any act that interferes with another person’s letter box or other receptacle. This can include: • destruction of the mailbox itself • theft of mailbox contents • the placement of items in a mail receptacle by persons other than postal employees • any action intended to obstruct or damage mail or mailbox property In short, anyone, other than mail recipients and postal employees, should NOT touch a mailbox or its contents.

You can drop off paper products at any of the area schools using the Abitibi green and yellow bins. You can also recycle cardboard, tin, aluminum and plastic products at the alternative school on Rebel Yell, just west of Greenhouse. There are two different IMGreen Recycling bins located there. They are the bright green ones and one is for paper and cardboard and the other is for plastic, tin and aluminum. If you drop off recyclables there, please have them bagged up and use the stickers located near the cans, so the school can receive the funds.

Many of us have a habit of leaving the garage door open when we are working or relaxing in the backyard. Unfortunately, people in virtually every neighborhood lose property to opportunistic thieves this way every year. Bicycles and power tools are just a few of the commonly stolen things and keep in mind that it only takes a matter of seconds for something of significant value to “walk away.” Please keep those doors down when you are not in eyesight of the garage.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to

While it is true that dogs are born to bark, they were not born to bark all day and night, driving your neighbors crazy. If you have a dog that must stay outside, please do what you can to limit the disturbance to your neighbors. You can find loads of information about how to control it at If you are one of the neighbors suffering from the seemingly endless noise of a neighbor’s barking dog, we hope that you will be able to speak with the owner about it. In many cases, the neighbor is unaware of the situation because, for one reason, they are away during the day. If the owner is unwilling or unable to do anything about it, you can call animal control at 281-999-3191 and have them do a check on the dog for possible neglect and abuse. (They won’t always come out for the barking alone.) The Sheriff’s Dept generally cannot do anything about it and they encourage you to call animal control as well. You can also find more information about the situation by looking on the website listed above. Ideally, the neighbors will be able to work out something mutually agreeable for everyone and every dog.

Do you have a professional service or product that the Homeowners’ Association can utilize for community improvements? If so, please let us know what you have to offer and we will do our best to use your business for future improvements to our neighborhood when needed. We would rather the money from the annual dues go to benefit our own neighbors when possible, rather than using an outside business or vendor. We’ll also be happy to publicize your business on our community Facebook page.

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. To find a facility in your area, please call: American Cancer Society • (800) 227-2345 National Cancer Institute • (800) 4-CANCER Or visit or for more information.

“Whenever you wear your hat, your day will be special.” - Margo Nickel In Cy-Fair ISD, volunteers have the opportunity to wear lots of different hats. Some will find themselves wearing the hat of a library helper or classroom reader. Others find that organizing a fundraiser or mentoring a student is the hat they wear best. Whatever volunteer hat you are wearing in our schools, one thing is certain; your day will be special. Cy-Fair ISD volunteers center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. They give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of our students. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a terrific diversity of skills and knowledge in its community. If you are interested in being a part of an exciting group of volunteers and making a difference in your Cy-Fair ISD Schools or would like more information, please feel free to contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at 281-894-3950.

Chances are you’ve heard the term “pet blessing,” but aren’t sure what it entails (no pun intended) or what the purpose is. Well, the simplest way to describe a pet blessing is: A spiritual celebration to honor our loyal companions who love us unconditionally. This special ceremony is traditionally held in the fall around St. Francis of Assisi Day, October 4th. This ceremony is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. St. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things: “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” Cornerstone

UMC will be holding its “Blessing of the Pets” on Sunday, October 6th, at 4 PM. People are invited to bring their pets (fish, snakes, cats, dogs, hamsters, etc.) to receive a special blessing. We will gather in front of the worship center building and following a brief liturgy, Dr. Dave Meadows will bless each animal and their owner. If for some reason you are unable to bring your pet (the pet isn’t people or animal friendly, is easily frightened or not well), then simply bring a photo. Dogs should be on leashes. Cats and other pets should be in appropriate carriers. Please make sure your dog or cat has on a collar with a current ID. Please join us for this special celebration… the “Blessing of the Pets.” For more info., please call the church office at 281-859-4141. Cornerstone United Methodist Church is located at 18081 West Road (across from the CFISD Berry Center).

St. Cuthbert is inviting all people and their pets to the Blessing of the Animals in celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on Saturday, October 12th, at 10:00 AM. This is a joyful and fun event,

Crossbridge Christian Church offers Free Weddings on December 7th and December 14th. We have multiple times available on both days. The Bride and Groom must come together to schedule the date. Please see the website for more information, www. THE STORY Dr. Kevin Pigg believes that The Story, a Zondervan best-seller, is the right tool to increase Biblical literacy, helping readers understand God’s story from Genesis to Revelation and how their own stories intersect with God’s. Consisting of 31 chapters of carefully-selected scriptures sequenced in chronological order, The Story presents the word of God in an engaging format, reading like a novel. The Story Church Campaign is a unique program providing up to 31 weeks of curriculum for children, teen and adult Sunday school and up to 31 weeks of corresponding sermons. When accompanied by reading through the five age-related books (The Story, The Story: Teen Edition, The Story for Kids, The Story for Children and The Story for Little Ones), the entire church can be literally on the same page for 31 weeks. Crossbridge Christian Church began the experience on September 22nd.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
