There have been several serious acts of vandalism in the community park over the past few months, all of which are creating needless expense to the Association. Pole lights have been broken, playground equipment spray painted with foul language and lewd drawings and we have even found burn areas on the picnic tables and benches. The Constable Patrol is aware of the issues and will be watching the park area more closely. The Board of Directors are also considering the installation of video surveillance cameras to help deter these acts. The Association is offering a reward for information that will lead to charges being filed and an arrest being made for the vandalism. Please, also remember to contact the Harris County Constable to immediately report any suspicious activity, loitering and vandalism throughout the community. Your money is being spent to clean up what these criminals damage so the more we keep our eyes open to our surroundings, the more we can deter this waste of funds in the future. Please feel free to contact management with any further questions or information at 866-956-7576.

One thing every homeowner should do at least twice a year is take a walk around and through your property with a close friend or neighbor who is not too familiar with your house. Start outside and ask yourself “how would I best break in?” The purpose of not doing it alone is your pal may spot things you’ll overlook. Return the favor and complete a survey for your friend. Besides the obvious “lived-in” look, don’t get into a habit of only doing certain things only when you’re not home. Chances are good you can tell when your neighbor isn’t home. Remember it’s a burglar’s job to know the same things. Most professional criminals can tell nobody’s home at least four or five houses away. Several dead giveaways are always closing the drapes ONLY when you’re not home. Having no garbage cans out collection day or an empty can sitting at the curb, are tip-offs you’re not home. So are closing up the house as tight as a drum in the hot summer months without the air-conditioner running. Turning on a certain light or two and every other room is in total darkness. Ditto for picking up all the kid’s toys, taking in the dog, shutting the garage door if you frequently leave it open and turning off the lawn sprinkler. Many people, before leaving, turn on the “burglar light,” the light over the kitchen sink. You might as well hang a sign on the front door you’re not home! If you use an answering machine never leave a message that you’re not home. Instead say you can’t come to the phone right now. If you don’t have a machine, turn down the volume on phones before leaving so it can’t be heard from outside - another dead giveaway nobody’s home.

You’ve probably heard it several times and it’s true! A dog is one of the best deterrents. Not because it’s vicious, it need not even be seen, but it has to be heard. A dog with a menacing bark will scare away a lot of would-be burglars, not only because they don’t know what kind of dog you have and what risk it would be to them if try tried to break in, but more likely because a noisy dog will create a disturbance and get attention - the last thing a burglar wants!

If you don’t have a dog there’s nothing stopping you from pretending. A Beware of Dog sign on your fence, a doghouse in the back yard, even a loose dog chain or bowl can drive away a potential burglar. Don’t be fooled by companies that provide cheap electronic “dogs” who bark none stop if a intruder trips a relay or otherwise signals his presence. Most experienced prowlers are familiar with these devices and won’t be fooled or scared off. Electronic devices that are effective besides the typical whole house alarm systems for windows and doors are infrared or motion detectors that sense movement or the heat given off by one’s body. Anyone approaching too close will trigger any number of attached devices. The most effective are powerful lights or burglar horns that either flood the area with light or fill the air with a deafening sound without notice. Just like a barking dog, the would-be burglar will usually hightail it out of there for fear of being discovered. To be effective, the sensitivity of such devices much not be set too high or stray animals will set them off too frequently, which will get you on the wrong side of your neighbors. Also be sure such devices are high enough that they can’t be easily turned off or broken.

Hurricane Season is upon us and we want to remind all of you of some helpful tips to keep you and your family safe and prepared: • Create a disaster plan • Create a disaster kit for supplies • Create an evacuation plan • Make sure your personal insurance and flood insurance are up to date We have many more helpful tips on the Association website or visit your local grocery store for a Hurricane Preparedness Packet.

Better safe than sorry!

It’s that time of year again where everyone is out and about sprucing up their yards and performing the “honey-do’s” on their homes. Please remember that any change or improvement to the exterior of your home or lot (even in the back yard) must be applied for through the Association prior to starting. So each month, we will provide information on the most noted rule violations from the prior month to help provide an extra reminder of our responsibilities as homeowners and good neighbors. STREET PARKING: Not only is continually parking in the street a violation of the rules, it causes a nuisance to your neighbors and safe access for traffic. Please utilize your driveway and garage to park your vehicles consistently. We understand you will have guests visit your home, but please also make an effort to use as much of your driveway as possible and remind your guests to be courteous to your neighbors when parking. PET ETIQUETTE: We understand your pets are very important to you and we want to be a pet friendly community. However, we have received many complaints that there are pet owners not following the rules of the community when it comes to pet etiquette. Please be aware and make a conscious effort to the adhere to the following guidelines: • Do not allow your pet to roam around the community and do not walk your pet without a leash • Pick up pet waste and discard properly COMMERCIAL/RECREATIONAL VEHICLES: Extended parking or storage of commercial vehicles, boats, trailers, RV/campers, etc. within the community, whether in the street or on your driveway, is a violation of the rules and regulations of the community. Legal action will be enforced upon continual violators.

“Whenever you wear your hat, your day will be special.” - Margo Nickel In Cy-Fair ISD, volunteers have the opportunity to wear lots of different hats. Some will find themselves wearing the hat of a library helper or classroom reader. Others find that organizing a fundraiser or mentoring a student is the hat they wear best. Whatever volunteer hat you are wearing in our schools, one thing is certain; your day will be special. Cy-Fair ISD volunteers center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. They give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of our students. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a terrific diversity of skills and knowledge in its community. Amaya Garage Doors Red: The heat and sun were just too much. So, I broke the chain and hit the road. I stopped at the office supply store and went on in, but nobody seemed very excited to see me. Thankfully, a kind lady was passing by and offered me a ride. My medical exam, shots and heartworm treatment are behind me now with no lasting damage and I am looking for my real forever family. Call me a love bug - I adore humans in all shapes and sizes. I roll over for tummy rubs and want to snuggle on the couch for movie night. Other dogs are ok, but I would rather have my people close by. Cats are very interesting and given my lineage, I do want to give chase. Things I love: long walks, rawhide chewies, and lots of hugs.

Congratulations to Cypress Christian senior defensive back, captain and four-year starter, Michael Boyd, who was honored by the Touchdown Club of Houston at their annual Preseason Team Banquet. The keynote speaker was Don Trull who was recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and played for the Houston Oilers in the 1960s. He challenged all the players to use their talents for more than just the game of football. The Cy-Christian Warriors have a full schedule through midNovember competing against area rivals for the district title. Armed with the talents and skills of returning players, newly discovered talent and additional coaches, the Warriors are mighty contenders this season. Be sure to catch the action. Warrior Football is streamed live on the internet each week via this link: Athletics/Game-Day.cfm. Homecoming is set for October 11, 2013, which includes a parade, tailgate party, the crowning of king and queen, the annual alumni picture and a great game against rival Bay Area Christian.

Kindergarten teachers are making the Bible come to life through fun and realistic activities. Students enjoyed learning about Noah and his faithfulness to God while on the Warrior football field. To get a better understanding of the size of the ark (which was 450 feet long and 75 feet wide), one class stood at each end of the football field, one class stood on the side and one class stood in the middle. They couldn’t believe that the ark was even longer than the football field! In addition, one of the kindergarten teachers released a helium balloon on a string that was 45 feet high to show the height of the ark. The children were able to see just how tall the ark really was! Noah definitely didn’t build it in one day. They marveled at God’s perfect plans and at His faithfulness to keep His promises.

The Coaching staff, parents and administrators at Texas Christian are extremely eager for the Lady Tigers Volleyball season to begin and see these girls grow in skills and have a winning season. Let’s go Tigers!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. Product sales give a girl the chance to learn goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. It also helps troops fund their activities and helps support our great camps and their varied programs. What else do Girl Scouts do? They help in their communities in many ways. They may make greeting cards for veterans, collect and shelve food at local food pantries, do face painting at a school carnival or organize a recycling campaign. There are many, many things to do as Girl Scouts and many different kinds of Girl Scouts to do them. Some of us act in plays; others build the scenery or make the costumes. Others may write the play or the music or set up a web page for the production. We are just starting to plan our calendar of events for the year, but we are looking forward to a good time!

Firefly Trails Community kicked off the new Girl Scout year with a Community Gathering held on September 7th at Cy-Spring High School. Girl Scouts and their families enjoyed an evening of food, fun, music and dancing. On October 25th, we will be holding a birthday party in honor of our Founder, Juliette Gordon Low. That party will be fall festival themed and will include a service project benefiting patients at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus. In November, we will have a Skate Night for our members. Please check with your Troop Leader for additional information and to register for Community events. Awards Congratulations to Shayan Bathena, Nikki Demarchos and Halley Finkley from Troop 5548 for earning their Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts and includes the design and implementation of a project that benefits the community outside of Girl Scouts. Halley organized a team of volunteers to assist her with completing a project, which addressed nutritional health and mental wellness, while providing examples and exercises to keep seniors active and engaged. Halley is now attending UT where she is majoring in communication science disorders. Shayan held a reading clinic for the children’s day care and a book drive for the children’s library at The Star of Hope Shelter in Houston. Shayan is attending UT and is majoring in Biology. Nikki collected donations and made welcome bags and blankets for a local nursing home and hosted game/social afternoons at the nursing home. Nikki is now attending Texas A&M.

Eagle Scout candidate Conner Cole, with Boy Scout Troop 1296, presented Copeland Elementary, with six (6) large wooden display cabinets this summer. He planned and built, with assistance from Troop 1296 scouts and parents, these shadow box frames as part of his Eagle Project. The glass fronted, hinged picture frames, one per grade, will be utilized to display students work once mounted in the school main corridor. Conner chose his project to give back to the community and in particular the school where he was a former student.

In September, Cub Scout Pack 1445 held a successful Rally Night at Lowery Elementary, signing up a number of new scouts to join the pack and begin their journey. Rally Night is an opportunity for first through fifth graders to meet with Cub Scout leadership to learn about Scouting and the Pack. Additionally, the new scouts participated in Tiger Day to get a jumpstart on earning their first advancements. The Pack has an exciting October ahead of it with our first campout of the year planned and an outing to Scout Day at Schlitterbahn. Chances are you’ve heard the term “pet blessing,” but aren’t sure what it entails (no pun intended) or what the purpose is. Well, the simplest way to describe a pet blessing is: A spiritual celebration to honor our loyal companions who love us unconditionally. St. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things: “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” Cornerstone UMC will be holding its “Blessing of the Pets” on Sunday, October 6th, at 4 PM.
