HARRIS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT PUTS ASTRODOME PLAN ON NOVEMBER BALLOT
If approved by voters in November, the repurposing of the Astrodome would take approximately 30 months, allowing it to play a key role in the hosting of Super Bowl LI in February 2017.
Court Votes Unanimously to Allow Voters Opportunity To Decide on Future of the “Eighth Wonder of the World” Harris County Commissioners Court voted unanimously this morning to give Harris County voters the opportunity to decide the fate of the Harris County Domed Stadium, the world-famous Astrodome, owned by county taxpayers. The court’s decision means voters will decide on November 5th whether to allow the county to issue up to $217 million in bonds to finance the redesign and redevelopment of the former stadium, which has remained empty and largely unused since 2009. The exact amount of bonds to be issued and the amount of the required property tax increase to pay off those bonds has not yet been determined, but would be part of the ballot language presented to voters. “One of the most frequent questions I have heard in my six and a half years as county judge has been ‘What are we going to do with the Astrodome’,” Emmett said. “Now the voters will finally get to decide.” After a lengthy multi-year process in which the county unsuccessfully sought private proposals with funding for the Astrodome, the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation unveiled a proposal in June called “The New Dome Experience.” The plan calls for converting the Astrodome to a modern multipurpose venue with open space that could play host to a multitude of sports, exhibitions and community events, including activities of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

STREET LIGHT OUTAGE
Please report any street light outage to Centerpoint. Repairs can take up to 3 weeks to be repaired, but the most recent request we made took only 2 days! It is imperative that residents participate in reporting outages, as there is no formal nighttime inspection done by management or Centerpoint. It’s simple, just go to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage and fill in the required information. You’ll need the 6 digit number located at the base of the light pole and an approximate address/location of the outage. You may also report it by dialing 713-207-2222.
GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug.
• Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

“We are excited to be named a Top-Rated 2013 Nonprofit,” says Marie Holmes, Executive Director, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. We are proud of our accomplishments, we have awarded over 5 million dollars in student scholarships since inception. The Top-Rated Nonprofit award was based on the large number of positive reviews that the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation received - reviews written by volunteers, donors, trustees and scholarship recipients. People posted their personal experience with the nonprofit. For example, one person wrote, “This foundation has given me a chance to fulfill my dreams of going to college.” While the Top-Rated Awards run through the end of October, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation was part of the inaugural group to qualify for the year. “Savvy donors want to see the impact of their donations more than ever,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits, “People with direct experience with the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation have voted that the organization is making a real difference.”
Being on the Top-Rated list gives donors and volunteers more confidence that this is a credible organization. The reviews by volunteers, clients and other donors show the on-the-ground results of this nonprofit. This award is a form of recognition by the community. Â Our Vision: The Foundation provides college financial support to capable and motivated CFISD student leaders with significant financial need. Our Trustees are passionate community and business leaders committed to raising funds for student scholarships and staff development grants. The Foundation and its Trustees work closely with CFISD and the Lone Star College Cy-Fair to impact quality of life in our community and improve access to college. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February. To find out more, visit Houston New Arts Movement online at www.artsmove.net.
WALTRIP CLASS OF 1978 35TH REUNION
When: Saturday, September 7th, 7:30-11:30 PM Where: Blanco’s $25 per person
‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works
Orthodontic Consultation were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino.
CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season.
