View your Newsletter online at BOARD CANDIDATES NEEDED When the Grayson Lakes community was created by the developer, The Grayson Lakes Community Improvements Association was established to manage and maintain common area property and to interpret and enforce the deed restrictions contained in our governing documents. A 5 member Board is responsible for management of the Association. In December of each year, an election is held to fill expiring terms. Two positions will need to be filled this coming December. Grayson Lakes property owners and/or residents are encouraged to run for the Board and exercise their knowledge and judgment in the operation of our community. The Grayson Lakes CIA Board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Clubhouse. Deliberations include finances, community activities, newsletter content, vendor performance and overall maintenance. A form has been provided elsewhere in this newsletter for those who would like to announce their intention to run for the Board. Please consider stepping up to serve your community.

FRIENDLY REMINDERS • Please be courteous to your friends and neighbors and park properly. Did you know it’s illegal to park against traffic or block driveways and sidewalks? Parking in the street also poses a danger to children who may run out from between parked cars and it can create delays for emergency vehicles. • RV’s, boats and trailers are not allowed to be stored on driveways or streets in Grayson Lakes. Sure you can bring it by to prepare for your trip, but sorry it can’t be parked Football in Grayson Lakes for an extime tended period of time. in Texas!

• Please pick up after pets when they make a deposit in the neighborhood. Everyone loves their dog, but no one like a souvenir on their shoe. • Please keep your dog properly restrained. Even the friendliest of pets can seem scary to some residents and we want all our neighbors to feel comfortable in the community. • If your lot is on the lake, your neighbors see your back and side yards. If you must use them for storage please screen the area with shrubbery or a fence. Storage buildings are not allowed on lake lots. Remember, before installing anything in your backyard, get approval from the ARC.

832-437-4511 • ROLE OF THE MANAGEMENT COMPANY In the past two months we included articles touching on the roles of Residents and Elected Officials in Master Planned communities such as Grayson Lakes. This month we turn our attention to the role of the Management Company. Maintenance of Common Property - Grayson Lakes common property consists of approximately $1.2 million in assets that need to be properly managed and maintained in order to keep the community as attractive as it was the day you moved in. This task is too large and too important to be entrusted to volunteers, so your Board hires a management company. Volunteer Board and Committee members do provide direction to the Management Company so that the character of the community is determined by Residents consistent with the vision set down by the Developer in our Governing Documents. However, day-to-day implementation is handled by the Management Company. A well qualified Management Company will have a broad knowledge of vendors serving Community Associations, will know their strengths and weaknesses and present your Board with a variety of strong choices for Grayson Lakes. A strong Management Company will also know how to “talk turkey” when things are not being handled as they should.

Financial Management - Maintenance of common property costs money so dues must be collected and bills must be paid. A capable Management Company can offer sound advice and guidance to your Board during the creation of the annual budget. The Management Company invoices and collects annual assessments. The Management Company prepares payments for services and distributes those payments after approval by your Board. Monthly and annual financial reports give your Board the tools to oversee and control spending. A full set of financial records is maintained by the Management Company and they work with Accountants hired by the Association to file taxes, create Annual financial reports and conduct audits. Legal Compliance - The operation of Community Associations is governed by a number of state laws. It is not reasonable for community volunteers to become experts in those laws so the Management Company ensures that all laws are followed. Actions include organizing and recording meetings, providing required notices to residents, maintaining corporate records, filing documents with appropriate agencies and following all laws applying to the pursuit of delinquent accounts and all laws applying to the enforcement of deed restrictions. Items are handed over to the Association’s attorney as required. Deed Restrictions - In order to maintain the character of Grayson Lakes

Private Instruction in:

•Piano • Guitar • Bass Guitar • Violin • Viola • Cello • Clarinet • Flute • Oboe • Saxophone • Trumpet • Trombone • French Horn • Drum Set • Percussion • Voice it is important that we all follow the Governing Documents as established by the Developer. Subject to oversight by and guidance from your Board, the Management Company conducts regular property inspections and notifies residents of conditions that are not up to the standards of the community. Your Board understands that this is a touchy subject. Deed Restriction letters are not issued out of a desire to exercise control over residents but out of an obligation to keep Grayson Lakes attractive and safe for the benefit of all residents and guests. Unless your property is in chronic violation, we hope you can accept Deed Restriction letters as friendly reminders of community standards.

GRAYSON LAKES BOOK CLUB WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS If you like to read books and want to meet other ladies in our neighborhood, you will enjoy the Grayson Lakes Book Club. For more information concerning the books and the locations for upcoming meetings, contact Jean Bays 281-394-2156 or email

TEACHING KIDDOS THE MEANING OF LABOR DAY How can we teach our kiddos the meaning of Labor Day? Read on: The history of Labor Day: Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September. This holiday is dedicated to appreciating the contributions of the working class and how they help build our country’s strength and prosperity. Labor Day has been a national holiday since 1894 and is considered the unofficial end to summertime, families often host barbecues, go camping, have picnics or attend parades. Take your child to work: Take your children to work with you. Allow them to meet the people at your workplace who can talk to them about their jobs. This is a great way to expose kids to various types of work. Talk to them how each specific job is important and how each person contributes to the company and society. Let your child work: No matter how young, you can teach kids about labor through action. Kids can chores at home from dishes to yard work. They can babysit, deliver newspapers, care for pets or help neighbors with chores. Discuss how certain kinds of work can help other kids - becoming a tutor to younger children, teaching computer skills, volunteering at kids’ clubs or helping out at children’s centers. Source:

EF FOUNDATION FOR FOREIGN STUDY HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENTS Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community.

According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization hasmatched over 100,000 enthusiastic students from around the world with caring host families across the United States. EF Foundation is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Program Sponsor.

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and resubscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when I say “bats?” Do you think of Halloween? Do you fear they will land in your hair? Do you think all bats have rabies? Bats are not blind and they don’t intentionally land on your head. Less than 1% ever contract rabies and there’s approximately only one death per year in the USA from bat rabies. The largest colonies in the country are right here in Texas. They form colonies of millions. At dusk the bats leave their roosts in search of prey. Each bat eats 1/3 of its own weight in insects each night and it’s especially nice that they eat mosquitoes! Bats play key roles in keeping insect populations in balance. Reaching speeds of up to 50 miles per hour, they use echolocation (sound waves) to detect and catch insects. Pups are born naked and each female only produces one. About seventy percent of all pups are born during a 10-day period in June. The pups nurse for 5 to 6 weeks. They are furred and capable of flight and self-feeding at about 5 weeks. The adult Mexican free-tailed bat has short reddish, brown, gray or black velvety fur. The underside of the bat is slightly

lighter. It has a wrinkled upper lip, rounded ears, large feet and a protruding tail. It’s small, only getting between 3.5 and 4.5 inches long. The wingspan is about 12 inches and they weigh about 1/2 ounce. Most Mexican free-tailed bats migrate to Mexico in October and November and return to Texas in late February. *TWRC Wildlife Center is a 33-year-old non-profit organization that rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife with the goal of returning healthy animals back to the wild. Through educational outreach programs and camps for children, we promote awareness of the vital role of wildlife in our community. We have two locations, one at 10801 Hammerly Blvd. in Houston and one at 1118 Pruitt Road in The Woodlands. Last year nearly 6,000 animals were admitted to our centers needing our help. BOARD APPROVES CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR PROPOSED SECOND STADIUM During its regular July meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the conceptual design for the proposed second stadium. The stadium project is one of three projects being considered for the District’s Student Activities Facilities referendum this fall. Members of the community, as well as Katy ISD end users and support staff attended a two-day design workshop held on June 26th - 27th and developed the conceptual design presented at the July 15th Board Work Study meeting. The second stadium would support student growth and success with additional athletic and fine arts support facilities at the secondary level within the District. PBK Architects were deemed best qualified for the stadium project, having successfully completed numerous stadium projects across the state, including multiple projects at the Rhodes stadium complex. Two other architectural firms have been selected for the STEM Center and Agricultural Sciences Center that are also components of the Student Activities Facility Proposal. For more information on the proposed second stadium, visit the Katy ISD website.

2013 - 2014 CRITERIA FOR FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS Katy Independent School District announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals for children eligible under the federal income guidelines for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. A copy of the policy may be viewed at Children living in households with incomes at or below the federally approved levels, based on household size, may be eligible for free or reduced price school meals. Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide

documentation of their eligibility status. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. The online application can be found at the district website at A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter was also distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they were eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. A new application is required each school year. The Nutrition and Food Service Department is located at 5364 Franz Rd, Katy, TX 77493. Staff is available Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 2:30 PM to assist parents in completing the application. Bring the names of all members of the household and their Gross Monthly Income. For any questions, call the Katy ISD Nutrition Department office at 281-396-6240. Applications are available online, at any district school and at the food service office. Applications may be submitted any time during the school year starting in August 2013. The information households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining meal eligibility. Application information may be verified by school officials at any time during the school year.

SUPERIOR MARKETING PLAN | ALTERNATIVE LISTING FEES | FREE MARKET ANALYSIS BRITTANEE GROCE NAMED KATY ELKS LODGE VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER The Katy Elks have long been known for their annual youth scholarship awards to local students; however, there is one award about which little may be known in our community. This is our State Vocational Grant program. This year, Brittanee Groce, a graduate of Morton Ranch HS received a $2,000 grant/scholarship to aid in her studies at HCC Downtown Campus in their VAST (Vocational Advancement Social Skills Training) Academy. “VAST Academy provides post-secondary transition programs and comprehensive support services which lead to meaningful credentials, employment and independence for differently-abled individuals.” As a child, Brittanee couldn’t talk and was taught sign language. Today, she not only has great mastery of the English language, she has spent a lot of time helping by reading to younger children. She still enjoys reading to others, but as with most teenagers today, her favorite pastime is texting. As a student at Morton Ranch HS, she was a “Best Buddy” to an autistic girl.

The scholarship funds presented by the Elks each year emphasize their motto: Elks Care - Elks Share. Nationally, the Elks are second only to the Federal Government in providing students with scholarship and grant funds. For anyone interested in pursuing any of the Texas Elks Scholarships for 2014, go to after September 15th when all current information should be posted. For further assistance, call the Katy Elks Lodge - 281-391-2763.
