TIMELY TIPS FOR SUMMER GARDENERS Summer is upon us and your garden may be feeling the heat. Mulch can help your garden plants weather the summer heat and still thrive. REDUCE WATER USE Mulch provides several healthy benefits to Texas gardens in the summertime. One of the most well-known benefits of mulch is to reduce evaporation and water use. In the heat of summer conserving water can be particularly important. Mulch provides a softer layer covering the hard ground, which serves as to insulate the ground from the heat of the day and as a moisture holding area after watering or rain. Water passes more easily into the mulch than into the hard ground giving the soil more time to absorb the water from the mulch layer rather than having the water runoff into the street. Mulch helps hold the moisture in the ground by reducing evaporation. More moisture in the ground reduces the temperature of the soil around plant roots. REGULATE SUB-SURFACE TEMPERATURES Another very important benefit to mulch in the heat of summer is regulation of ground temperature. A 3 to 4 inch blanket of mulch is excellent insulation, protecting the ground from direct sun and greatly reducing the temperature several inches below ground level. This is where your plants’ roots live, thrive and do the hard work of absorbing moisture and nutrients. They will be much healthier and more productive with the reduction in temperature that mulch provides. TYPES OF MULCH As for types of mulch, Cornelius Nursery recommend hardwood or cedar wood for most gardens. Some gardeners prefer pine mulch, but while it is somewhat less expensive, it also breaks down more quickly and will need to be reapplied frequently. Cedar is the most expensive of the three but does help reduce garden pests in some instances, due to its natural repellant properties. To apply mulch, simply place it in the garden from the bag or with a shovel and carefully spread it around your plants by hand or with a rake.   Mulch will reduce your water use, reduce the time required to weed, as well as reduce soil loss due to wind and run-off. Plus it will help your plants to thrive through the summer heat!

While the spring has been a bit cooler than normal and the beginning of June saw some wonderful rain, the projected outlook for rain during the rest of summer is not good. While last summer did not have many days over 100˚F, 2012 was still the hottest year on record for the cities of Houston and Galveston and Hobby Airport. (www. Annual_Climate_Article_2012. pdf). Based on their current charts, Houston is predicted to be very hot

this summer with below expected rainfall. While projections can be wrong, we need to be prepared if they are correct. Houston Department of Health and Human Services offers the information below on being safe in the heat. Remember that small children, older adults and those suffering long term illnesses are often the first to suffer from high heat situations. Know your neighbors and be sure to check on anyone who falls into the above categories. Be sure to check on outdoor pets as well. TIPS TO AVOID HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS: • Increase water consumption. Drink lots of liquids even before getting thirsty, but avoid those with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar because these can actually result in the loss of body fluid. • Conduct outdoor work or exercise in the early morning or evening when it is cooler. Outdoor workers should drink plenty of water or electrolyte-replacement beverages and take frequent breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned facility. Those unaccustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment need to start slowly and gradually increase heat exposure over several weeks. • Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing that permits the evaporation of perspiration. • Do not leave children, senior citizens or pets unattended in a vehicle. • A wide-brimmed hat helps prevent sunburn as well as heat-related illness. Sunscreen also protects from the sun’s harmful rays and reduces the risk of sunburn. • If the house is not air-conditioned, seek accommodations in air-conditioned facilities during the heat of the day: malls, movie theaters, libraries, multi-service centers, etc. • Take frequent cool baths or showers if your house is not air-conditioned.

One of the best ways to help your gardens is to use mulch around your flower beds and trees. A great long-term way to help reduce the temperature in your home is to plant trees. Large trees provide much needed shade. If you look at older family farms you can always spot which building is the homestead - it is the one surrounded by deciduous trees. Deciduous trees provide shad from the sun in the summer but allow the sun to warm the areas below in the winter when the leaves fall off the trees.

VACATION PLANS As summer gets into full swing and vacation plans are made, be sure to let a trusted neighbor know when you will be away. Remember to stop the mail (can be done on-line at https:// or at the post office, 3 day minimum). Either stop newspaper delivery (https://myaccount. and log into your account) or arrange for someone to keep them from collecting in front of your house. There no longer is a credit for undelivered newspapers. Our experience is that the newspaper never stopped coming, even though we requested a stop, so we just have someone pick up the newspaper. There is a great video online at with some simple tips on securing your home. One simple suggestion you might not think of is to lock your garage doors from the inside, then unplug the garage door opener. This prevents someone from using a decoder and entering your garage and home.

remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement

of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

Catherine Wilder, DDS Lauren Shepard, DDS

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

• Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized.

• Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.”

• Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency.

• Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them.

Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. Visit for even more back to school safety tips.

Estate l a e R r u o Y or Life! f e c r u o s e R BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride.
 • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in well-lit areas.
 • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If

your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop.
 • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO.

• Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance.

• Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults.

HAPPY BACK TO SCHOOL! GET MOTIVATED! It’s that TIME! Back to school! Kiddos are NOT going to be excited, but most parents will be! How can you get your kiddo ready for another school year? Here are some tips: • Start getting into the school schedule mode in early August. Begin readjusting bed time, homework time and other regular school schedules. • Begin school shopping early. Have your child enjoy the experience and be positive! • Read as a family so kiddos will get into the reading mode. Kids lose their ability to learn most during the summer months. Refresh their skills! • Start winding down the family gatherings, get-togethers and activities and focus on the family. • Lead by example.

for disasters, including hurricanes at:

Katy ISD is preparing for tropical weather hazards and the 2013 hurricane season that officially began June 1st. The district reminds families to prepare, as well by making a plan, putting together a hurricane survival kit and staying informed. The Houston region has many helpful resources to guide students, parents and school personnel through these three steps.

“Make a plan, put together a survival kit and stay informed are three steps Katy ISD uses to prepare for hurricane season; these are the same steps students, parents and school personnel can use to be ready,” added Bremer.

“In order for Katy ISD to be ready for storms, we need our community to be informed and prepared,” said John Bremer, Katy ISD emergency management coordinator. “Prepared families help by allowing us time to close schools and secure the buildings well ahead of any impending threats. If families are prepared, then we can make better decisions about school operations.” The Texas Department of State Health Services has a number of tools for families to use, including a brochure on Hurricane Preparedness, an emergency supply checklist and a video on surviving disasters. The Ready Houston regional preparedness page also has helpful information on how to prepare

District preparations include annually reviewing and updating the tropical weather annex of the emergency operations plan; maintaining flood control features and inspecting roofs of the schools and making sure that emergency resources are available and ready should a storm threaten the Texas Gulf Coast. In order to respond ahead of any storm, Katy ISD stays informed by working closely with the National Weather Service and by listening to regional partners at the City of Katy, Harris County and Fort Bend County.

THEATER/ARTS MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON! Foxfinder by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a ‘foxfinder,’ arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre.   Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery.   Museum of Dysfunction IV December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. Rome by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www. - or  832-463-0409.

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website,

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email or by phone 281-770-3414.

EXCHANGE STUDENTS - FROM AMERICAN COUNCILS The U.S. Department of State sponsors exchange programs that bring high school students from over 50 countries from all over the world in the United State for an academic year to live with an American host family, attend high school and learn about American society. American Councils is always looking for interested and excited host families to host one of their students. For more information, visit http://inbound. or email inbound@americancouncils. org. You can also contact Assia Baburi by email: or by phone at 713-856-5020.

KATY REBELS-D’ADDIECO TEAM The 9 /10th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco team took first place at the June 8-9, 2013 Tournament for Hope in Austin, TX. This is now an incredible 5 first place finishes so far this year. In this tournament, the Rebels had key players missing and more key players battling through significant injury and they still managed to win the tournament. They showed some admirable grit and character to rise up as a team and pull together for the wins. The team shooting efficiency was well above their normal average all weekend, including a team record in both 2 pt. and 3 pt. percentage in the first game. The improved shooting, along with the typical disciplined defense, a steadily improving low post offense and domination on the glass were the main differences in the games. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on your fifth championship! th

FBMG volunteers have helped to teach nearly 100 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students about gardening basics, where food comes from and the wildlife often encountered in the garden. Each year a new curriculum is selected from the nationally acclaimed Junior Master Gardener program supported by 28 universities, including Texas A&M University, which serves as JMG headquarters. This year’s curriculum is Wildlife Gardener and includes lessons taught by Master Gardeners and other subject matter experts about birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, vermicomposting and much more. “Twenty to thirty years ago, nearly all kids were exposed to nature on a day to day basis. Times have changed and it gets harder and harder for youth to have the same experiences. This camp gives youth the opportunity to learn about and experience the best that nature brings and get their hands dirty along the way” said Boone Holladay, Fort Bend County Extension Agent - Horticulture, who advises the Master Gardener volunteers. Kids’ Kamp will be held at the Fort Bend County Extension office at 1402 Band Road in Rosenberg from 9 AM until 3 PM each day. A registration fee of $50 includes all materials, snacks and a T-shirt and is limited to the first 25 paid registrants. Download and print a registration form at www. or call Margo “Mac” McDowell at 281-633-7033 for assistance or information. FBMG is sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy. org. The University of Houston System (UHS) and Houston Community College Northwest (HCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to expand higher education opportunities in the Katy/West Houston area. Through a partnership that includes using existing facilities at UHS at Cinco Ranch and HCC-Katy, the MOU will result in an increase of academic programs offered by UHS and HCC-Northwest in West Houston. Visit 713.718.5700 frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community.
