WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY LAWN?
COURT RESERVATIONS To reserve court time, the sign-up bulletin board is located inside the tennis courts. Residents may sign up no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the sign up sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes.) This is to allow maximum court usage for all residents during prime times (mornings and evenings). Should you sign up prior to 48 hours in advance or for longer than 1 1/2 hours, your name will be subject to removal by a committee member.
READY FOR HURRICANE SEASON?
(Of course, you can walk on and play as long as you like if the courts are not previously reserved or in demand.) TENNIS LESSONS/COACHING Please book tennis lessons by signing up for a court 48 hrs. in advance during non-prime hours. (No evening or morning lessons, please.) If you or your child can only take lessons during prime time, please sign up for the single court at Park Cypress to prevent injury and frustration to our neighbors playing a match. It the lesson is to be a regularly set day and time, please contact the tennis committee for approval and court time can be blocked off for you at the Park Cypress Court.
If you have spots in your yard that are yellowing or dying, chinch bugs could be the culprit. But, be sure you are treating the right problem. Another problem is also appearing in neighborhood lawns: Take-all Root Rot fungus. It attacks both St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns stressed by too much or too little water. It can appear in hot weather, unlike Brown Patch fungus, which usually appears when nights are cooler. For information on identification and treatment, go to www.plantanswers.com/ root_rot_fungus.htm.
Storms can develop quickly. Some advance preparation will eliminate a last minute scramble. Keep: • Homeowners and flood insurance current • Emergency supplies stockpiled • Trees pruned • Loose objects in yard picked up Our website, www.greentrailstwo.com, contains links to helpful emergency preparation information.

VANDALISM Tweens and teens have been observed damaging our tennis courts and the equipment held within. Your yearly maintenance fees pay for this vandalism directly. Our goal is to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice amenities in our neighborhood for all residents. Please let your children know if they are observed abusing our courts and/or their equipment, the Constable will be called to escort them home. Anyone can report vandalism directly to the Constable at 281-463-6666, in the effort to keep our neighborhood’s common areas in good condition. Please note: the tennis courts are for tennis ONLY. Please let your children know the courts are not for soccer, bike riding, skating, climbing or any other use. The lights at the Gerry Ayers courts are numbered. Please note the number of the light before calling to have it repaired. Any maintenance problems at the courts can be reported to Brigitte Hobbesland, 713-591-0880.
The tennis court lights are on a timer, they should come on at dusk and turn off by 10:30 PM. BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
When you (or your lawn service) cut your grass or trim shrubs, please be sure clippings are disposed of properly. Our trash contract includes pick up of yard debris properly bagged or bundled and placed at the curb. Note: Remember to not leave bags of clippings at the curb for multiple days. Debris should not be put into storm drains or over fences into common areas. This can block proper drainage and breed mosquitoes, plus the decomposing material smells. Dumping litter or yard waste into storm drains or onto someone else’s property is illegal and you can be ticketed. We have also received complaints that some yard services blow clippings in the street to neighboring houses. If you think your contractor is doing this, please direct them to pick up properly.
If you see something suspicious, call the Constable at 281-463-6666. Turning on exterior lights makes it easier for the constable or alert neighbors to see your home and to also see what is going on outside it. Park your cars in your driveway and lock them.

HOW DO WE LOOK?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up. Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.
Please note that the association pays electrical charges for a streetlight whether the bulb is functioning or not. To report street light outages you can contact CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222 or www.centerpointenergy. com. Be sure to note the pole number and the street address.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

KATY ISD PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON
Katy ISD is preparing for tropical weather hazards and the 2013 hurricane season that officially began June 1st. The district reminds families to prepare, as well by making a plan, putting together a hurricane survival kit and staying informed. The Houston region has many helpful resources to guide students, parents and school personnel through these three steps.
COMPLETE BATHROOM & KITCHEN REMODELING
“In order for Katy ISD to be ready for storms, we need our community to be informed and prepared,” said John Bremer, Katy ISD emergency management coordinator. “Prepared families help by allowing us time to close schools and secure the buildings well ahead of any impending threats. If families are prepared, then we can make better decisions about school operations.”
See our workmanship by visiting our showroom:
The Texas Department of State Health Services has a number of tools for families to use, including a brochure on Hurricane Preparedness, an emergency supply checklist and a video on surviving disasters. The Ready Houston regional preparedness page also has helpful information on how to prepare for disasters, including hurricanes at: www.readyhoustontx.gov.
“Make a plan, put together a survival kit and stay informed are three steps Katy ISD uses to prepare for hurricane season; these are the same steps students, parents and school personnel can use to be ready,” added Bremer.

District preparations include annually reviewing and updating the tropical weather annex of the emergency operations plan; maintaining flood control features and inspecting roofs of the schools and making sure that emergency resources are available and ready should a storm threaten the Texas Gulf Coast. In order to respond ahead of any storm, Katy ISD stays informed by working closely with the National Weather Service and by listening to regional partners at the City of Katy, Harris County and Fort Bend County.
KATY ISD PARTICIPATES IN DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS

KATY REBELS-D’ADDIECO TEAM
The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco team took first place at the June 8-9, 2013 Tournament for Hope in Austin, TX. This is now an incredible 5 first place finishes so far this year. In this tournament, the Rebels had key players missing and more key players battling through significant injury and they still managed to win the tournament. They showed some admirable grit and character to rise up as a team and pull together for the wins. The team shooting efficiency was well above their normal average all weekend, including a team record in both 2 pt. and 3 pt. percentage in the first game. The improved shooting, along with the typical disciplined defense, a steadily improving low post offense and domination on the glass were the main differences in the games. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on your fifth championship!

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.

There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.
Green Trails II
Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email email@example.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS
The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator.
