Back to School! BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY: MAKE IT A PRIORITY
As parents prepare for the start of a new school year, teaching children how to be safer needs to be at the top of their list of things to do. An analysis by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children of attempted abductions during the past five years found that children are at most risk when going to and from school or school related activities. Parents and other adults can help keep children safe by following these ten tips: • Teach your children to always TAKE A FRIEND with them when walking or biking and stay with a group while standing at the bus stop. Make sure they know which bus to ride. • Walk the route to and from school with your children pointing out landmarks and safe places to go if they’re being followed or need help. Teach your children they should NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS and always stay in welllit areas. • It is not safe for young children to walk to and from school, even in a group. Parents should always provide supervision for young children to help ensure their safe arrival to and from school. If your children wait for a bus, wait with them or make arrangements for supervision at the bus stop. • Teach your children that if anyone bothers them, makes
them feel scared or uncomfortable to trust their feelings and immediately get away from that person. Teach them it is ok not to be polite and IT IS OK TO SAY NO. • Teach your children if anyone tries to take them somewhere they should RESIST by kicking and screaming, try to run away and DRAW ATTENTION by kicking and screaming “This person is trying to take me away” or “This person is not my father/mother.” • Teach your children NOT TO ACCEPT A RIDE from anyone unless you have said it is ok in that instance. If anyone follows them in a vehicle they should turn around, go in the other direction and run to a trusted adult who may help them. • Teach your children that grownups should NOT ASK CHILDREN FOR DIRECTIONS, they should ask other adults. • Teach your children to NEVER ACCEPT MONEY OR GIFTS from anyone unless you have told them it is ok to accept in each instance. • Make sure the school has current and accurate emergency contact information on file for your children and confirm names of those authorized. • Always know where your children will be. Teach your children to always CHECK FIRST before changing their plans before or after school. Teach your children to never leave school with anyone unless they CHECK FIRST with you or another trusted adult, even if someone tells them it is an emergency. Children should be taught to trust their feelings. They need to know that if someone makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused, they should tell a parent, guardian or trusted adult. HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

NOTES FROM THE BOARD
We have several houses that need roof repairs. Please do your part to help keep our home values up. Houston ISD and Katy ISD have both stated they are not raising taxes, so it is a great time to protest your tax value and get ahead of the curve. And it’s inevitable that they will go up some time in the near future. Always be prepared and keep your alarm system activated. Criminals are always looking for opportunity. Install a motion sensor light and a cheap camera system for outside, if needed. Remember to call 911, not Board Members when you see criminal activity. Time is the key to stopping criminal behavior. If you live near an entrance, you need to take extra precautions. Criminals like to choose these homes because it is easy to get away after the crime.
Our new website is up and running. Go check it out. You can pay your fees and much more on the site. It is more user friendly than our old site. CHECK IT OUT! www.creekbendestates.com.
Reminder that trashcans are to be stored out of public view, except for on designated trash days. This helps keep the community looking good.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact:
CRIME If you see suspicious cars or people in the subdivision DO NOT HESITATE, call 911 and report it. • Keep your gates locked. • Keep your Alarm systems on or activated. • Keep your Garage doors closed.

DEED RESTRICTION REMINDER
LANDSCAPE AND YARD DECORATIONS In an effort to assist the owners and occupants of Creek Bend Estates with being more familiar with our Deed Restrictions we will be highlighting a different deed restriction each month both in the newsletter and on our website. This month’s Deed Restriction is Landscape and Yard Decorations and below is a summary of this deed restriction based upon the Creek Bend Estates Deed Restrictions. This summary applies to all Sections of Creek Bend Estates. On the front lawn or wherever visible from the street, there shall be no decorative appurtenances placed, such as sculptures, bird baths, fountains, or other decorative embellishments, fences or plants, hedges, trees, shrubs, walls, structure or other improvement (including play ground and recreation equipment) unless the same shall have been approved in writing by the Architectural Control Committee.
In addition to the Deed Restrictions, more specific information regarding yard decorations are addressed in the ACC Guidelines, which state that no more than 3 yard decorations not to exceed 2 feet are allowed with ACC approval. Christmas, holiday or other festive decorations of a temporary nature are exceptions. Such temporary decorations must be removed within four (4) weeks after the calendar date of the holiday. Note: The enforcement of Landscape and Yard Decorations is not limited to the above summary, but is subject to the full language of the Landscape and Yard Decorations in the Deed Restrictions of Creek Bend Estates. Therefore all owners or occupants of Creek Bend Estates should obtain and read the Deed Restrictions. Copies of the Deed Restrictions can be obtained by accessing the Creek Bend Estates community website www. creekbendestates.com, clicking on the “Documents” link on the home page, selecting Deed Restrictions, and following the on-line instructions. If you do not have access to the internet, contact KPM Management at 291-685-3090. The Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions, also known as the “Deed Restrictions” has been duly recorded under the Official Public Records of Real Property for Harris County, TX. These Deed Restrictions are attached to your property and are legally binding.

The Katy ISD community raised more than $27,700 for the communities, including gift cards. The district partnered with the Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union to set up separate accounts available at any location in Katy. The results from the disaster relief efforts by location are: Oklahoma City/Moore, OK: Cash $4,420.89 Cards $7,074.21 Total $11,495.10

KATY ISD PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON
Katy ISD is preparing for tropical weather hazards and the 2013 hurricane season that officially began June 1st. The district reminds families to prepare, as well by making a plan, putting together a hurricane survival kit and staying informed. The Houston region has many helpful resources to guide students, parents and school personnel through these three steps. “In order for Katy ISD to be ready for storms, we need our community to be informed and prepared,” said John Bremer, Katy ISD emergency management coordinator. “Prepared families help by allowing us time to close schools and secure the buildings well ahead of any impending threats. If families are prepared, then we can make better decisions about school operations.” The Texas Department of State Health Services has a number of tools for families to use, including a brochure on Hurricane Preparedness, an

emergency supply checklist and a video on surviving disasters. The Ready Houston regional preparedness page also has helpful information on how to prepare for disasters, including hurricanes at: www.readyhoustontx.gov. “Make a plan, put together a survival kit and stay informed are three steps Katy ISD uses to prepare for hurricane season; these are the same steps students, parents and school personnel can use to be ready,” added Bremer. District preparations include annually reviewing and updating the tropical weather annex of the emergency operations plan; maintaining flood control features and inspecting roofs of the schools and making sure that emergency resources are available and ready should a storm threaten the Texas Gulf Coast. In order to respond ahead of any storm, Katy ISD stays informed by working closely with the National Weather Service and by listening to regional partners at the City of Katy, Harris County and Fort Bend County.

The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco team took first place at the June 8-9, 2013 Tournament for Hope in Austin, TX. This is now an incredible 5 first place finishes so far this year. In this tournament, the Rebels had key players missing and more key players battling through significant injury and they still managed to win the tournament. They showed some admirable grit and character to rise up as a team and pull together for the wins. The team shooting efficiency was well above their normal average all weekend, including a team record in both 2 pt. and 3 pt. percentage in the first game. The improved shooting, along with the typical disciplined defense, a steadily improving low post offense and domination on the glass were the main differences in the games. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on your fifth championship!

events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre. CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www. mildredsumbrella.com - firstname.lastname@example.org or 832-463-0409.
