Offical Newsletter printed by www.KrenekPrinting.com

SOMETHING NEW FOR YOU IN LAKES OF PINE FOREST Hello Lakes of Pine Forest, Krenek Printing Company is very excited for the opportunity to publish your official subdivision newsletter, which will be exclusive to Lakes of Pine Forest. Your Newsletter is a very valuable resource and venue for reaching all the homeowners with information furnished by your Management Company, Janet Davis at j.davis@pmghouston.com area clubs, organizations and residents. Information pertaining to schools, scouts, churches, libraries and local organizations, etc. will be placed in the newsletter following the subdivision news. The newsletter comes to you in the mail free of charge every month. This is made possible by the local businesses whose advertising may be found within your newsletter. Please consider supporting these businesses, as they support your subdivision. We recommend no matter who you select for your services, that you always check references and do your homework to ensure that you are always selecting the best service provider. There are two types of advertising offer in your newsletter.

Classified ads, which may be found in the back of the newsletter. These are ads for residents selling items and for businesses seeking help wanted etc. The cost is 25¢ per word and may be submitted on line at www.krenekprinting.com, faxed to 281-463-2425 or mailed in to Krenek Printing Co., 7102 Glen Chase Ct., Houston, TX 77095. The deadline for classified ad submission and payment is the 10th of each month. Commercial ads are accepted by the 12th of the preceding month for which you wish your ad to appear. We have ads ranging from 2x4 (business card size) to full page sizes. These vary in cost and other areas are available for advertising. You can view pricing online at www.krenekprinting.com or call our office at 281-463-8649, so that we might send you a price sheet. Newsletters will be delivered to your home each month and will appear online at www.krenekprinting.com. Remember, your newsletter is what you make of it! We look forward to the opportunity to work with you and for you in publishing an awesome newsletter filled with important neighborhood and area information. If we can be of any assistance, please contact us. Krenek Printing Company

GRAFFITI

Report Vandals to the Sheriff by calling 911 or 713-221-6000. Vandals are tagging the fences and signs in the area. If you have graffiti on your property, please remove it or cover it up as quickly as possible. Failure to do so will result in additional graffiti on your property and the surrounding area.

NO FARM ANIMALS ALLOWED Chickens, roosters and ducks are not allowed as pets in the subdivision. Domestic animals such as cats and dogs are the only types of animals allowed. Legal action will be taken against violators.

SIMPLE WAYS TO STAY SAFE IN THE WATER Swimming is one of the many joys of summer and we hope you’re able to make good use of the association’s pool. While we want to make sure all our residents and guests have fun in and around the water, our top priority is safety. Please take note of the association pool rules and follow them to help keep everyone safe. 2

WWPool rules promote safety, but safety is largely up to you: it’s important to take precautions and be prepared for emergencies. • Make sure you, your family and your guests know how to swim properly. If you don’t, there are plenty of swimming classes for people of all ages. • Always supervise children while they’re around the pool, no matter how well they can swim. It only takes one misstep for someone to get hurt. • Take note where the reach pole, emergency phone and life preservers are located in the pool area. • Most importantly, consider learning CPR if you haven’t already. This simple life-saving technique could save a life should an accident occur. There’s plenty of fun to be had at the pool and knowing how to stay safe in the water will help make this a great summer. For more safety tips, go to www.poolsafely.gov.

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE Did you know that the governing documents of Lakes of Pine Forest requires all homeowners to submit an application for any improvement or modification to the exterior of your home? This application is reviewed and decided on by the Architectural Control Committee (ACC). Springtime is the season to make repairs and upgrades to the exterior of your home, including the landscaping. Please don’t forget to submit your application before making a change to the exterior of your home. The ACC Committee tries to process the applications as quickly as possible. Supplying the specifications of your improvement and a sample or detailed list of materials to be used will also help speed up this process. You may contact Principal Management Group of Houston for an application.

KEEPING OUR DRAINS CLEAN Did you know that you are responsible to keep the curbs in front of your property clean and free from yard waste and other debris? The curbs direct rainwater to the County’s storm drainage system and the water needs a clean path to flow through to the drains. Grass growing in

Lakes of Pine Forest July 2013

the curbs and drains block that free flow and may contribute to the high water we typically see with a heavy rain. Also, it is illegal to sweep or blow any lawn clippings, leaves or other debris into the county drains. Please re mind your lawn crews to take your clippings with them. Thank you for helping to keep Lakes of Pine Forest neat and clean!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! Would you like to see Lakes of Pine Forest become more of a close knit community rather than a neighborhood development? If so, we are seeking volunteers who can help make this happen. If you are interested in participating with various tasks such as planning social functions, writing newsletter articles we welcome your enthusiasm and ideas. Please contact Janet Davis at 713-3297177 or j.davis@pmghouston.com. You can also contact the Social Committee at lopf.social@gmail.com.

HELP REDUCE CRIME & KEEP OUR STREETS LIGHTS LIT UP! Report Neighborhood Street Lights by calling 713-207– 7777 or emailing the work order to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.

WANTED: YOUR NEWSLETTER ITEMS Do you want to acknowledge a family member or neighbor’s birthday, anniversary or graduation? Would you like to express your appreciation for an act of kindness? Do you have a photo, a commentary or words of wisdom to share with your LOPF neighbors? If so, why not take the opportunity to submit these items to our community newsletter? Articles should be typed and submitted BEFORE the newsletter deadline, which is the 10th of each month. Please contact Janet Davis at j.davis@pmghouston.com, for more information.

LOST YOUR PET?

Veterinary Public Health DIVISION (Formerly called Harris County Animal Control) The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your pet, please check this website. www.countypets.com.

VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

JULY 4 TH SAFETY With warm weather and family events, the Fourth of July can be a fun time with great memories. But before your family celebrates, make sure everyone knows about fireworks safety. • Kids should never play with fireworks! • Buy only legal fireworks and store them in a cool, dry place. • Never try to make your own fireworks. • Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents. • Steer clear of others. Never throw or point fireworks at someone, even in jest. • Don’t hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting. Wear some sort of eye protection and avoid carrying fireworks in your pocket. • Point fireworks away from homes and keep away from brush and leaves and flammable substances. • Light one firework at a time (not in glass or metal containers) and never relight a dud. • Don’t allow kids to pick up pieces of fireworks after an event. Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in the trashcan. • Think about your pet. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they’ll run loose or get injured.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. 5

• In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients - remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

Buddy support we have enjoyed in the past. Making sure that all of our elementary children get off the bus at the correct stop is an important responsibility. The Bus Buddy Program requires 400+ volunteers in the Cy-Fair community to ride buses to assist the nearly 9,000 elementary riders and their drivers. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

FUNDRAISERS YOU ARE INVITED TO ATTEND

“Ales and Tails II”

A CASINO NIGHT FUNDRAISER BENEFITTING TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER On July 13, 2013, TWRC Wildlife Center will host Ales & Tails II, this year’s major fundraising event, at Saint Arnold Brewing Company in downtown Houston. We are excited to offer dinner, beverages, casino-style gaming, a live band, silent auction and prize drawings throughout the evening! TWRC Wildlife Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, serves as an emergency facility for wildlife brought to us by the public. We are funded solely by the generosity of individuals, corporate donations and grants, as we receive NO Federal or State Funding. Throughout our 33-year history we have had over 130,000 injured, orphaned or ill wildlife pass through the hands of our caring volunteers. We provide veterinary care for injured animals and coordinated placement of wildlife with appropriately skilled and permitted rehabilitators, who care for wildlife until it can be safely released back into its native habitat. TWRC also provides a truly unique variety of educational outreach programs for the community we serve and two on-site rehabilitation programs to engage the public in helping care for wildlife during our busiest months.

Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Museum of Dysfunction IV December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre.

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK

During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.

There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activi-

ties, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. FUN FACTS ABOUT THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

If you have ever visited the Statue of Liberty in person, you already know she’s an imposing figure, but consider the following fun facts: • Official dedication ceremonies held on Thursday, October 28, 1886. • Total overall height from the base of the pedestal foundation to the tip of the torch is 305 feet, 6 inches. • Height of the Statue from her heel to the top of her head is 111 feet, 6 inches. • The face on the Statue of Liberty measures more than 8 feet tall. • There are 154 steps from the pedestal to the head of the Statue of Liberty. • A tablet held in her left hand measures 23’ 7” tall and 13’ 7” wide inscribed with the date JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776). • The Statue has a 35-foot waistline. • There are seven rays on her crown, one for each of the seven continents, each measuring up to 9 feet in length and weighing as much as 150 pounds. • Total weight of the Statue of Liberty is 225 tons (or 450,000 pounds). • At the feet of the Statue lie broken shackles of oppression and tyranny. • During the restoration completed in 1986, the new torch was carefully covered with thin sheets of 24k gold. • The exterior copper covering of the Statue of Liberty is 3/32 of an inch thick (less than the thickness of two pennies) and the light green color (called a patina) is the result of natural weathering of the copper.
