July 2013 JULY 4TH PARADE & POOL PARTY
Decorate your bikes, wagons, and scooters in the stars and stripes and come join us for the annual July 4th Parade and Pool Party on Wednesday, July 4th at 10 AM. We will begin at Crescent Green Park and parade down the street to Geri Ayers Pool to cool off. We’ll have some decorations available before the parade or come ready to go. There will be drinks and snacks at the pool and a DJ to make sure that everyone has a great time. We’ll see you there!
PARK MONITORS NEEDED
If you visit our parks and would like to be a Park Monitor, we are in need of monitors at Pocket Park, Wisdom Woods Park and Gerri Ayers Park. Please contact Kristie Poldervaart at firstname.lastname@example.org or 281-6479483. This is an easy way to volunteer in your community and it only takes an hour each month.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY LAWN?
If you have spots in your yard that are yellowing or dying, chinch bugs could be the culprit. But, be sure you are treating the right problem. Another problem is also appearing in neighborhood lawns: Take-all Root Rot fungus. It attacks both St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns stressed by too much or too little water. It can appear in hot weather, unlike Brown Patch fungus, which usually appears when nights are cooler. For information on identification and treatment, go to www.plantanswers.com/root_rot_fungus.htm.

TENNIS LESSONS/COACHING: Please book tennis lessons by signing up for a court 48 hrs. in advance during non-prime hours. (No evening or weekend morning lessons, please.) If you or your child can only take lessons during prime time, please sign up for the single court at Park Cypress to prevent injury and frustration to our neighbors playing a match. If the lesson is to be a regularly set day and time, please contact the Tennis Committee for approval and court time can be blocked off for you at the Park Cypress Court. The courts are occupied for tennis league play on Monday and Wednesday mornings and no lessons can be given during league play.
Residents ONLY may reserve court times. Anyone, including tennis pros, wanting to reserve REGULAR court time in advance for lessons or leagues, must contact the tennis committee through Elaine Kearney at 281-492-6848. To reserve court time, the sign-up bulletin board is located inside the tennis courts. Residents may sign up no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time period by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the sign-up sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes.) This is to allow maximum court usage for all residents during prime times (mornings and evenings). Should you sign up prior to 48 hours in advance or for longer than 1 1/2 hours, your name will be subject to removal by a committee member. (Of course, you can walk on and play as long as you like if the courts are not previously reserved or in demand.) New residents needing tennis/pool access cards can contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761. Access cards are for residents only. Card access is the only way to insure our courts are only being used and cared for by our residents and their guests, please do not open the gates for anyone not having a card. Do not loan out your card. The lights at the Gerri Ayers courts are numbered. Please note the number of the light before calling to have it repaired. Any maintenance problems at the courts can be reported to Brigitte Hobbesland, 713-591-0880. The tennis court lights are on a timer, they should come on at dusk and turn off by 10:30 PM.
Repair - Replace
PARENTS: Tweens and teens have been observed damaging our tennis courts and the equipment held within. Your yearly maintenance fees pay for this vandalism directly. Our goal is to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice amenities in our neighborhood for all residents. Please let your children know if they are observed abusing our courts and/or their equipment, the Constable will be called to escort them home.
47 Years Experience
Anyone can report vandalism directly to the Constable at 281-463-6666, in the effort to keep our neighborhood’s common areas in good condition.
Please note: the tennis courts are for tennis ONLY. Please let your children know the courts are not for soccer, bike riding, skating, climbing or any other use.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
When you (or your lawn service) cut your grass or trim shrubs, please be sure clippings are disposed of properly. Our trash contract includes pick up of yard debris properly bagged or bundled and placed at the curb. Note: Remember to not leave bags of clippings at the curb for multiple days. Debris should not be put into storm drains or over fences into common areas. This can block proper drainage and breed mosquitoes, plus the decomposing material smells. Dumping litter or yard waste into storm drains or onto someone else’s property is illegal and you can be ticketed. We have also received complaints that some yard services blow clippings in the street to neighboring houses. If you think your contractor is doing this, please direct them to pick up properly.

If you see something suspicious, call the Constable at 281-463-6666. Turning on exterior lights makes it easier for the constable or alert neighbors to see your home and to also see what is going on outside it. Park your cars in your driveway and lock them. Keep doors and windows locked (including garages) and alarms set. Trim shrubs so windows are visible. If you are going to be out of town, turn in a Vacation Watch Form. Use timers on lights. HOW DO WE LOOK?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house. Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans now to spruce up.

Cars parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better, and is safer for your neighbors and your car.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients - remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

TCS SENIOR HEADING FOR THE MARINES Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible. Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping.
The Houston Family Arts Center is in its 8 season, an exciting line-up of plays and musicals all of which reflect the theme of “memories and traditions.” The
