Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato. Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.

Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

The heat and sun were just too much. So, I broke the chain and hit the road. I stopped at the office supply store and went on in, but nobody seemed very excited to see me. Thankfully, a kind lady was passing by and offered me a ride. My medical exam, shots and heartworm treatment are behind me now with no lasting damage and I am looking for my real forever family. Call me a love bug – I adore humans in all shapes and sizes. I roll over for tummy rubs and want to snuggle on the couch for movie night. Other dogs are ok, but I would rather have my people close by. Cats are very interesting, and given my lineage, I do want to give chase. Things I love: long walks, rawhide chewies and lots of hugs.

TEXAS CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS TEAM WINS 3RD IN STATE! Elisa Kendall, Afton Otwell and Bao Truong qualified to play in the TAPPS State Tennis Competition on April 24th – 25th in Waco, TX. Elisa Kendall won the 1A State Title, while Afton Otwell and Bao Truong tied for 5th place in each of their divisions. The combined points earned by Elisa and Afton allowed Texas Christian High School to place 3rd over all in the 1A Girls Division. TCS could not be more proud of the team’s accomplishment! Way to go Tigers!!! TCS SENIOR HEADING FOR THE MARINES Looking for adventure and a challenge that could test every fiber of physical strength and moral standing sounds like a Tom Clancy novel. It is in fact, the real-life story of Connor Lyttle, a senior at Texas Christian High School. Echoed by his favorite Bible verse, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13); Connor loves a challenge that will stretch him and help him grow. Connor’s athletic abilities and leadership skills allowed

him to excel on Texas Christian’s football, basketball and baseball teams; making the playoffs in two of the three team sports. True to his character, Connor is preparing to take on his next life challenge by joining the ranks of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently involved in a rigorous physical training program to make his transition into the demanding Marine Corps world as smooth as possible.

Happy Maid Service More Than Just A Cleaning Service

Connor will be greatly missed at Texas Christian, but will be constantly in the thoughts and prayers of the families, staff and students as he enters the realm of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines.”

to the hilt! Even Elementary Principal Robert White joined in the fun as he became “Abe Lincoln.” CYPRESS CHRISTIAN STUDENTS SERVE AT-RISK YOUTH Twenty-six CCS students committed their Saturday to spend time with at-risk youth in the Houston area. They played games, performed a skit, led worship and shared a verse from 1 Timothy 4:12 with the message how God gives direction for young people to make a difference in His Kingdom by being an example in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity. God really used the CCS students to make heart connections with abused and neglected youth and to share God’s love in a fun and unique way.

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN RENAISSANCE AND REFORMATION FESTIVAL Fifth graders participated in the 2013 Cypress Christian Annual Renaissance and Reformation Festival. Students introduced their guests to historical characters such as John Wycliffe, Martin Luther and leaders of the Reformation who gave their lives to ensure the Bible was available to all. In addition, students told visitors about famous scientists such as Isaac Newton, Copernicus, Pascal and Galileo. Guests enjoyed learning details about people and events who invested their lives to ensure that all have access to truth and knowledge. CCS WARRIOR TRAVIS CHAFFIN PASSES AWAY CCS Warrior Travis Chaffin passed away on Saturday, May 4th. Travis was a junior at CCS, a great friend to his classmates, an excellent student, a standout member of the baseball team and a godly role model for his friends and family members. Travis was always thinking about others and how he could serve them. His personal goal was to always honor the Lord in his actions. Travis wrote these words not long before his passing...”I want to be a role model for others. I want my actions in school, on the baseball field and elsewhere to display Christ in my life.” In his time at CCS, Travis did indeed touch many lives with the love of Christ. He placed his trust and hope in Jesus Christ and while we grieve his loss, we are comforted in knowing he is now safely home with his Lord.

On Sunday, May 5th, the CCS gym was filled with over 500 people as CCS students and families came together with the Chaffin family to meet, to grieve, to pray and to comfort each other. On Monday morning, the school day began with a special assembly for secondary students in remembrance of Travis. Students were reminded that through Jesus Christ, while we grieve, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. Instead, we can find the strength to continue, even while we process the loss of such a treasured friend.

their excellence in teaching. The event was sponsored by two Fairfield area congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held in their newly-completed building on Fairfield Place Drive.

“This is actually the first event we’ve hosted in our new meetinghouse,” said Chris Crawford, bishop of one of the congregations. “We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to give back to those who so selflessly give every day to our most prized possessions, our children.”

June 5th - Last day of school!

The program included a children’s choir, a video presentation, speakers and a brunch. Stirling D. Pack, Jr. was the keynote speaker. He told the teachers, “These young students under your care have chosen you as their outstanding teachers and mentors in all of the respective schools represented here today. We are assembled to honor you for what you do every day as teachers and administrators, making a lasting impression on their lives.” Pack noted that directing, mentoring and encouraging children to fully reach their innate potential is both a great quest and significant challenge to those who teach.

Coach Holly Bowman (left) and her student, Avery Smith, a junior at Cy-Ranch High School.

Students nominate teachers who have had the most positive influence in their lives. On the morning of Saturday, April 13th, over 50 Cy-Fair educators representing 15 schools were honored at a teacher appreciation brunch for

Another speaker, Avery Smith, a junior at Cy-Ranch High School, said, “I invited Coach Holly Bowman because she has formed me to be a hard worker, dedicated teammate and student. She has helped me through some of my hardest classes. And as my swim coach, of course, she’s also taught me so much about swimming and being a great coach. Both of those skills have helped me become a better swimmer and a better teacher myself when I give swim lessons to younger children.” Bowman said, “I am honored to be invited here today, especially by someone like Avery, who is a motivator to me. I feel very encouraged by what I’ve heard at this event. I’ve even received some inspiration today. I’ve actually thought of a new way to approach a current challenge by being more loving and ready to help.”

Dean Fantasia, a first grader at Ault Elementary, also spoke. He chose Lillian Cunningham as his special teacher and directed all of his remarks at the podium to her.

“Dean has touched my heart today,” Cunningham said. “He just said everything any teacher would love to hear! I feel appreciated and loved.” “This has been a wonderful event,” said Ashley Clayburn, Ed.D., assistant superintendent of school improvement and accountability in Cy-Fair I.S.D. She attended the brunch on behalf of Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent. “We thank you for taking the time to honor our teachers for the outstanding work they do each and every day. I know the teachers and students will remember this celebration for a long time to come!”

June 2013

The child was only a couple weeks shy of his 10th birthday when he passed away, no longer able to fight the brain tumors and their devastating effects on his body. There are a number of ways I could describe this young man. He was bright. He was full of energy. He was an avid baseball fan. He was a full-faced smile waiting to happen. And as I sat among those celebrating his all-too-short life at his funeral last week, I couldn’t help but think of another important characteristic that defined him.   He was a public school student.   Before he had even turned 3, the child was receiving special education services from his local public school. The extent of his impairments required continual services from medical personnel, diagnosticians and therapists.   The beauty of our public education system is that we do what is necessary for our brightest students, those who are most challenged and everything in between - no questions asked. When our students are not initially successful, we find another way to help them succeed. We do whatever it takes until their needs are met.   When the child’s parents first enrolled him in school, they knew he was only expected to live until about 4 or 5 years of age. Even so, the school only sought ways to make his life better. The excellent care, support and love he received from public educators allowed this young man to bless those around him for four more great years.   A comparison I often make is that public educators are modern-day missionaries, helping improve the lives of children from all backgrounds. Our teachers are being asked to do more today for our students than ever and our students are leaving our schools with both a quality education and quality role models.   Although the child I referenced is no longer with us, the lesson he leaves behind is a valuable one. Every child matters and we will care for each one who walks through our doors.  TEXAS SENATE PASSES HOUSE BILL 5 On Monday, May 6th, the Texas Senate unanimously passed House Bill 5! HB 5 changes the graduation plan to maintain rigor while affording Texas students more flexibility with their course selection. HB 5 also reduces the number of End-of-Course (EOC) exams needed for graduation from 15 to 5. The session is not over, but we are in the home stretch. The House and Senate must now collaborate to work out their differences. Thank you to

which no other high school choir has achieved this year. And all due to our fantastic students under the exceptional direction of Mrs. Deidre Douglas and Matt Perez.

Sincerely, Mark Henry, Ed.D Superintendent of Schools

The choir banquet this year, held at Northwest Forrest Conference Center, was a huge success. Masquerade Ball was the theme on May 17th, as many adorned elaborate masks or displayed their own facial perfection! The students always shine so bright when they dress up. A huge thank you to Sandra Greer for organizing and decorating for the event. It was a magical evening as the exiting student choir board presented their successors; they will no doubt carry on in commanding style. The power point presentation of past events and happenings is always a delight, as the students recall fond times throughout their training, performing and enjoyment.

The 11th annual Cypress-Fairbanks ISD JROTC Pass in Review took place on April 20th at the Berry Center. Approximately 900 cadets representing CFISD’s eight JROTC units and all 10 high schools showcase their skills before a crowd that district AFJROTC coordinator Judy Reidy called “the best spectator turnout in the event’s 11year history.”

Cy-Falls High School

We have had an outstanding year!!! Newsweek magazine noted us as one of the best public high schools in the nation! Most effective in turning out college ready graduates. All of our choirs received “ones,” superior ratings,

May 24th found the school taking over as the all choir lock-in took place. The games they come up with are such a blast and statue is always a favorite. Food consumed by the pound and fun exploding through the evening. Thanks to all who participated, as it all occurs because of you! Schlitterbahn was high school city on the 25th as our students and chaperones, along with some other schools, took over the water city. The cool waters are always so refreshing and the technology of the water runs/coasters is always amazing and enjoyed. Who can go wrong with fun AND sun? It was a quite ride home and no doubt, there were heavy sleepers that night! Our final spring concert was held on May 7th, in our school auditorium. We bid adieu to our outgoing seniors and many achievement awards are presented. The highest of these is the all around outstanding student, decided by the choral directors. This award was recieved by Abi Amadin. In addition, two scholarships, one academic and one musical, funded by the Choir Board Members. The musical scholarship to Lauren Lafferty, followed by the academic scholarship going to Abi Amadin. Congratulations to these well deserving students! Congratulations continue as we acknowledge our seniors going forth to better our world. You will be missed and fondly

FOXFINDER by Dawn King. US Amateur Premier - August 15-31, 2013. Finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn award. William Bloor, a “foxfinder,” arrives at Sam and Judith Covey’s farm to investigate a suspected contamination. He is driven by his education and beliefs to unearth and destroy an animal that threatens man’s civilization and to remain free from its influence himself. As his investigations proceed, the events that follow change the course of all their lives - forever. Dawn King’s play won the 2011 Papatango New Writing Competition (in partnership with London’s Finborough Theatre). A darkly comic exploration of belief, desire and responsibility, set in a world both strange and familiar, from a striking new voice in British theatre.   CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery.   MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www. - or 832-463-0409.

The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email or by phone 281-770-3414.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
