All residents should respect and obey the Pool Rules.
Summer is almost here, which means pools will be opening for the summer. Please take time to review water safety with your children before they even enter the pool. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children age 14 and under. Believe it or not, the majority of children who drown do so in residential swimming pools while being cared for by one or both parents. In the time it takes you to run into the house to answer the phone, your child could drown - in as little as one inch of water.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you not install swimming pools at all until your children are over 5 years of age. If you do have a pool, install a four-sided fence, about 5 feet high, with a self-closing latch that’s out of the reach of children.

In open bodies of water and on boats, always use personal flotation devices, making sure that they fit properly. But floats and swimming lessons often give parents a false sense of security; they’re no replacement for supervision. At community pools, do not solely lean on the lifeguards to supervise your children. You are your child’s best safety net. Keep an eye on your children, learn CPR and keep a telephone with emergency numbers near the pool.

GoodKid-BadChoice.com GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns • Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns. • Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun. Never cut off more than a third of the leaf. • Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80 degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules. Flowers • Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom. • Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of the beautiful foliage. • Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia, Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca, Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca. Vegetables • A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest of the day. • Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets, Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.
Shrubs • Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.

FORT BEND COUNTY LIBRARIES (FBCL)
PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE - 281-341-2677
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR YOUNG ADULTS BEGINS JUNE 3, 2013!
Young Adult Reading Club for Teens, June 3rd - August 3rd. Exciting free activities - from game days and movie nights to cookie decorating and scrapbooking classes - are being planned, while area teens discover the wonders of the world that can be found between the pages of a book! Library programs and activities begin during the week of June 10th and continue through August 3rd. The theme for this year is “Beneath the Surface.” Teens in grades 6 and up are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total number of hours they spend reading or the number of reading-related activities they complete. The reading activities may include watching a movie based on a book, attending a teen library program or making a bookmark or poster based on a book. Listening to audio books and reading magazines and newspapers may also be counted. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online by going to the FBCL website. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
“Education for Today, Tomorrow and Eternity”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’
Your Local Maid Service for 20 Years
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States.

There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail. com or by phone 281-770-3414.

KATY REBELS ARE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS AT SPRING MADNESS TOURNEY IN THE WOODLANDS, TX The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels - D’Addieco team continued their impressive start to the season with another 1st place finish in the March 30th Houston Premier Spring Madness tournament in The Woodlands, TX. After a shaky first half in the first game, the Rebels mounted a 14 point comeback in the second half and held on to win by 3 points. They won the championship against the host team by an impressive 22 points while battling foul trouble and physical play. Again, hustle and intensity, along with some clutch free throws, late game execution and a solid zone defense proved to be the difference. The team has demonstrated the ability to win gritty, close games, which should serve them well later in the season. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on another excellent tournament!

NATURAL MOSQUITO REPELLANT Mosquitoes have complex methods of detecting hosts and different types of mosquitoes react to different stimuli. Most mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, but there are also mosquitoes that seek hosts during the day. You can avoid being bitten by making sure you aren’t attracting mosquitoes, using attractants to lure mosquitoes elsewhere, using a repellent and avoiding actions that diminish the effectiveness of the repellent. Use this list of items and activities that attract mosquitoes as a list of things to avoid or that can be used as bait to lure mosquitoes away from you. • Dark Clothing: Many mosquitoes use vision to locate hosts from a distance. Dark clothes and foliage are initial attractants. • Carbon Dioxide: You give off more carbon dioxide when you are hot or have been exercising. A burning candle or other fire is another source of carbon dioxide. • Lactic Acid: You release more lactic acid when you have been exercising or after eating certain foods (e.g., salty foods, highpotassium foods). • Floral or Fruity Fragrances: In addition to perfumes, hair products and scented sunscreens, watch for the subtle floral fragrance from fabric softeners and dryer sheets. • Skin Temperature: The exact temperature depends on the type of mosquito. Many mosquitoes are attracted to the slightly cooler temperatures of the extremities. • Moisture: Mosquitoes are attracted by perspiration because of the chemicals it contains and also because it increases the humidity around your body. Even small amounts of water (e.g., moist plants or mud puddles) will draw mosquitoes. Standing water also allows mosquitoes to reproduce.
281-392-2304 Exterior House Cleaning Specialists These natural products will effectively repel mosquitoes, but they require more frequent reapplication (at least every 2 hours) and higher concentrations than DEET. Because of the differences between types of mosquitoes, products that contain multiple repellents tend to be more effective than those containing a single ingredient. As you can see, natural repellents tend to be volatile plant oils. • Citronella Oil • Lemon Eucalyptus Oil • Cinnamon Oil • Castor Oil • Rosemary Oil • Lemongrass Oil • Cedar Oil www.mosquitorepellant.com
CENTERPOINT ENERGY ISSUES IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS ABOUT IMPERSONATORS CenterPoint Energy would like to remind the public about some important safety tips to avoid becoming the victim of an impersonator. The company is not experiencing anything unusual as far as reports of people impersonating our employees; however, from time to time people do impersonate utility company employees or law enforcement personnel in order to gain access to someone’s home. Below are some important safety reminders: • All CenterPoint Energy employees and contractors wear uniforms and carry identification badges. If the badges are not visible, they will show them upon request. • If a customer doubts whether or not someone is a CenterPoint Energy employee, they should ask to see their identification badge or call the company’s call center at 713-207-2222 or 713-659-2111 to verify that CenterPoint Energy has an employee in the area. • All of CenterPoint Energy’s vehicles are marked with the CenterPoint Energy logo. In the majority of cases, it is NOT necessary for our employees to enter the home, as most of our work is done outside on power and natural gas lines. However, it IS necessary for our natural gas employees, when restoring gas service, to enter a home or business to relight pilots and ensure it is safe to resume natural gas service.

YOUR HEALTH NOW! - EASY WAYS TO CUT CALORIES, WITHOUT TRYING! We have to reduce 3,500 calories to lose one pound. Sounds difficult? It is very easy. Check out these easy ways to cut calories and not even notice! • Use a smaller plate or bowl - this forces you to put less on your plate/bowl. • Put your fork/spoon down between each bite - it takes 15-20 minutes for your brain to sense your stomach is full. Savor each bite of food by putting down your fork/spoon. • Chew your food more - this is a BIG must. Mom always said “chew your food. Your stomach doesn’t have teeth in it.” Experts say to chew each bite 39 times. This makes us eat slower and enjoy each bite. • Power down - turn off the TV, put away the phone and focus on your food! Else we end up eating more. • START your meal with a salad - say no to the bread basket or chips. Say yes to the salad with dressing on the side. It’s a few extra dollars that will help you shed many more calories! • Make fruits and veggies the biggest part of your meal - Nutrition experts say your plate should be as colorful as the rainbow. Aim for fresh veggies with your meals and end with fresh fruit for dessert!
