May 2013 Aberdeen Trails (AT) 2013 ANNUAL MEETING UPDATE
Thanks to all members that attended the recent annual meeting! We were able to meet the quorum requirements to officially record the meeting and hold an election for 3 of the expiring Board positions. Incumbents Carla Hills, Kristin Dunn and newcomer Marnie Ybanez were elected to fill the 3 positions, which will expire in 2016. We have posted the annual meeting handouts and presentation on the website in the Resource Center under Annual Disclosures for those of you who were unable to attend, but want to review the information. We want to send a SPECIAL THANK YOU to retiring Board member Joann Krug for her many years of dedicated volunteer service to the community! Her financial expertise and common sense thinking were a great asset to the Board and for the community as a whole. She will be missed!

Log on to www. highsierramanagementonline.com to stay abreast of community information, read minutes of meetings, review governing documents and view the community calendar for important dates. There is much more provided on the website, as well as registration for emessage communications.
(AT) RULES OF THE MONTH
As a reminder, Aberdeen Trails is a deed restricted community with many rules each resident must follow in an effort to help maintain and increase our property values. So each month, we will provide information on the most noted rule violations from the prior month to help provide an extra reminder of our responsibilities as homeowners and good neighbors. STREET PARKING: Not only is continually parking in the street a violation of the rules, it causes a nuisance to your neighbors and safe access for traffic. Please utilize your driveway and garage to park your vehicles consistently. We understand you will have guests visit your home, but please also make an effort to use as much of your driveway as possible and remind your guests to be courteous to your neighbors when parking. PET ETIQUETTE: We understand your pets are very important to you and we want to be a pet friendly community. However, we have received many complaints that there are pet owners not following the rules of the community when it comes to pet etiquette. Please be aware and make a conscious effort to the adhere to the following guidelines: • Do not allow your pet to roam around the community and do not walk your pet without a leash • Pick up pet waste and discard properly
COMMERCIAL/RECREATIONAL VEHICLES: Extended parking or storage of commercial vehicles, boats, trailers, RV/campers, etc. within the community, whether in the street or on your driveway, is a violation of the rules and regulations of the community. Legal action will be enforced upon continual violators.
(AT) BOARD OF DIRECTORs MEETINGS
The Board of Directors meet on a monthly basis and residents are welcome to attend. The Board generally meets at the West Houston Church of Christ on West Road, however reschedule dates and locations sometimes occur due to scheduling conflicts. You can find the meeting dates at www.highsierramanagementonline.com on the website calendar. Please remember to contact High Sierra Management prior to or on the scheduled meeting date to ensure there are no cancellations or location changes. The minutes of the meetings, as well as monthly financial reports, governing documents, forms, community events and news, etc. can also be found on the website for homeowner review.
(AT) PET POLICY AND ETIQUETTE
We understand your pets are very important to you and want to be a pet friendly community. However, we have received many complaints that there are pet owners not following the rules of the community when it comes to pet etiquette. Please, be aware and make a conscious effort to the adhere to the following guidelines: • Only two pets per household - refer to governing documents regarding height and weight limits. • Pick up pet waste and discard properly. • Do not allow pets to roam around the community unrestrained - it’s the law! This includes cats too! • Do not allow dogs to bark continuously disturbing neighbors.
(AT) EXTERIOR CHANGES OR IMPROVEMENTS TO YOUR HOME
Summer projects are in full swing so we want to take this opportunity to remind all of you that any change or addition to the exterior of your home must be applied for an approved by the Association prior to proceeding. Regular maintenance such as replacing fence pickets, touching up paint, etc. do not require approval. But projects such as painting the entire house, replacing the roof, installing decorative items like flagpoles or birdbaths, etc. do require approval. Please contact management to inquire about your specific project if you have any questions just to be on the safe side. You can find the Home Improvement Guidelines and the application on the website for your convenience and review.

COPPERBROOK (CB) Pool season
Summer is fast approaching and the pool is being prepared for another season of fun in the sun. By following the pool rules, everyone will be doing their part to make it a safe and happy summer. The pool season is from May 30th to September 31st. POOL RULES • Use is restricted ONLY to Copperbrook residents and accompanied guests (limit 5 guests per family). Residents and guests shall use the pool at your own risk. No lifeguard is on duty. • Do not prop gates open or allow others to follow you through the gate. (Note: Do not open the gate for anyone who does not have an entry card.) • Appropriate swimming apparel only. No cutoffs. • Keep candy, food or beverages on pool deck. Place trash in receptacles. • Children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or a responsible adult, age 18 or older, in a swimsuit at all times, including in the water, on the deck and in the restroom. • Children who are not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper or plastic pants and a swimsuit. Cloth or disposable diapers are not allowed. • Animals are not allowed in the building or pool area, except guide dogs. Guide dogs are allowed on the deck, but not in the water. • No running, pushing, foul language or general roughhousing. Please keep conduct suitable for a family environment. • No smoking. • No alcohol. • No glass items anywhere in the facility. • No diving, back dives or somersaults from the side of the pool. • No skateboards, bikes or scooters allowed inside the fence. • Please close umbrellas when leaving. If there is an emergency, call 911. Report incidents or unsafe conditions to AMI at 713-932-1122. Report trespassing to the Sheriff’s Office at 713 221-6000. Being inside the gate after pool hours is trespassing. POOL HOURS: Tuesday - Sunday: 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM POOL PARTY RULES Several residents have inquired about having pool parties and the HOA has temporarily set the following conditions until pool party
rules are officially established: • There is a refundable $150 cleaning deposit required made payable to AMI prior to the event. • The pool cannot be reserved for private parties, but must remain open to all eligible community members and their guests. • The pool is “swim at your own risk” with no lifeguard on duty. • The HOA is currently making modifications to the pool rules as well as to pool party rules, which will include a usage fee for pool parties; however, no usage fee will be required until the rules are finalized. The park closes at dark. A Deputy Sheriff assigned to patrol our neighborhood will be driving through the park area each evening to make certain no one is on the premises. Cameras have been installed in the pool area. All activities in the pool area, park area and parking lot are continuously monitored by HOA Board members. ENTRANCEWAY The lighting at the entranceway monuments has finally been replaced. Also, new flowers are being planted in the beds which will brighten the entrance to Copperbrook.
(CB) TRASH CONTAINERS
We are asking residents to place trash in plastics bags before putting them in trashcans. With the strong winds, the trash containers have been blown around and the garbage is being scattered onto the yards and streets. We appreciate your cooperation in helping to keep our community clean.
(CB) Surveillance Cameras
Surveillance cameras have been installed at the poolhouse. The cameras are positioned to monitor the pool area, the park grounds and the parking lot. HOA Board members have 24-hour access to view the ongoing activities of these areas. All suspicious activities will be reported to the Sheriff’s Office.
REMINDERS FROM YOUR COPPERBROOK HOA
• The Harris County Leash Law requires that dogs must be restrained when in public. This means they should be on a leash or physically held by their owner. • It is also against the law to allow cats to roam the neighborhood. Did you know that Dr. Michael Fox, the world renowned veterinarian, stated that an outdoor cat has a life span of only 3 years? • It is against the law to breed dogs for sale without a kennel license.
• The HOA will report violations of these laws to the appropriate authorities. • When walking your dog, please pick up the waste. • Keep trashcans out of sight from the street and put them on the curb no earlier than the evening before garbage collection day and remove them no later than the evening of that collection day. Filled trashcans that remain on the curb or in front of the garage for several days present a health risk to your family and the community. Be aware that trash is not picked up on holidays. In cases where filled trashcans are not removed within a reasonable time, the HOA will report the violation to the Harris County Public Health Service. Your HOA Board members are working diligently to keep Copperbrook a beautiful and safe place to live. Please do your part to observe the deed restrictions. If you do not have a copy of the deed restrictions, you may request one by calling AMI at 713 932-1122 or by email at www.amitx.com

In an effort to keep you all informed regarding the safety of our students and staff, I wanted to update you on how we responded to April 9th’s incident at the Lone Star College - Cy-Fair campus. Because the safety of our students and staff is our number one concern, the CFISD Police Department notified several of our schools located in the vicinity of Lone Star College to take the precautionary measure of entering into “secure the building” mode. We activate this policy when police activity is reported in the area of any of our campuses. All doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building until an “all clear” is given. At 1:50 PM, CFISD Police Chief Alan Bragg reported that our schools were given the “all clear” and were free to return to normal operations and a safe dismissal. We are committed to protecting our children and our personnel and are confident in the emergency operations that we have in place. The immediate response by our schools demonstrates how important their safety is to us. Sincerely, Mark Henry Ed.D, Superintendent of Schools

www.WeBuyGoldCenter.com moved by the 15-year-old, Pakistani school-girl’s advocacy efforts for female education and wanted to do something locally in her honor. Malala, who has been fighting for the right for her peers to receive an education since she was just 11 years old, was gunned down in October 2012 by the Taliban on her way home from school near the Afghan border. She was shot in the head and neck as punishment for attending school despite Taliban orders that all girls should quit and writing about her experience on a BBC Blog. Suffering a fractured skull, which required inpatient treatment over the last three months, Malala was recently released from a hospital in Birmingham, England. She will require long-term rehabilitation and cranial reconstructive surgery. Malala is still a target of the Taliban.
“Malala Yousafzai is my hero,” said Ed Station. “She believed in something so passionately at such a young age that she would be willing to put her own life at risk. It reminded me of American Lt. Jeremy Ray who was killed guarding a council meeting while serving in the military. Malala is the reason why our brave men and women, like Jeremy Ray, serve in other countries. They fight to protect the rights of all human beings. They put their own lives at risk, not for oil or land, but in order to protect people who cannot protect themselves.” Ed lives in League City but supports the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation because of the many hard-working people who care passionately about education for children who make up the school district. “A college degree is powerful and can open up so many doors for people. I want young female students here to know who Malala is and what she is fighting so hard to accomplish for everyone,” said Ed.

Florida was the destination for our Acapella choirs spring trip April 27th - 30th. They participated in a special voice workshop followed by fun and frolic at all the theme parks. Thank you so much to our fearless leaders, Deidre Douglas and Matt Perez. Without your tireless efforts of training, fundraising, planning and corralling our members, this trip would not have been reality. Everyone will be forever touched by their time together with memories that will last them a lifetime. I believe one would have a hard time determining who had the most fun, the adult chaperones or the students! May 7th is our final concert for this school year. We will bid farewell to our seniors with songs in our hearts. The Executive Board will be awarding scholarships and awards at the culmination of the performance. The end of year banquet will be held at Northwest Forrest again this year on May 17th. A Masquerade Ball will be the fare! Dining and dancing in our finery will liven the festivities. Our gracious student Board will present an encompassing power point highlighting togetherness of the choirs over this school year. The past members will present the incoming Board, which have proudly stepped up to volunteer and add their leadership for next year. Thank you to Sandra Greer for heading up this momentous event. Also in May, the 24th will be the Spring Trip for the rest of the choir members: Schlitterbahn! They will board buses and drive to New Braunfels for a fun filled day of splashing and relaxing. This will be continued fun, as they will be fresh off their lock in social the previous night! Whew! Action packed and full of song! A musical endeavor unfolds as we experience and grow! Where your comfort is our priority!
May for Copper Corners Girl Scouts brings a “Bridging” event for those troops moving to the next Girl Scout level. It is a tradition to walk across a small wooden bridge and exchange a Girl Scout hand shake with a sister Scout from your new level. It is also a chance to wear that new uniform or at least the new vest or sash! It is one of those occasions that make leaders and parents misty-eyed, especially as we close the evening with a Friendship Circle and sing “Make New Friends.” We would especially like to congratulate our graduating Ambassadors. We are so proud of you all! Many girls from Copper Corners will be continuing their Girl Scout experience at Girl Scout Camp. San Jacinto Council offers resident, day and twilight camps with many opportunities for all Girl Scout levels. Camp means meeting new friends from around Houston or around the world! Whether it is your first time to paddle a canoe, go through the “people washer” or dance the “cotton-eyed Joe,” there is always something new to learn and do at camp.
Girl Scout troop 16239 shows off their Easter crafts! This Junior Girl Scout troop plans their own meetings and activities (with some help from their leaders). Each girl has been acquiring leadership and organizational skills by being in charge of a particular meeting, this year.
GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CORNERS SERVICE UNIT
April brought two fun events for the Copper Corners Service Unit. On March 20th, Junior Girl Scout Troop 16257 invited all our Brownie Girl Scouts to “Jammin’ Jammies” Brownie Day. Girls who attended wore their pajamas and bathrobes for an exciting morning of songs, games and crafts. The event was planned by the Junior Girl Scouts, who also led the individual sessions. The service project for the event was collecting non-perishable foods for our host church’s food pantry. It was a lot of fun for all who attended! Troop 16257 and their leaders worked very hard to make this a great event! On April 28th, the “Spring Fling” Daisy event helped our youngest Girl Scouts learn about gardening and having a Girl Scout good time! The girls also took home a very special craft and brought items to make “birthday in a box” boxes (and bags) for Cypress Assistance Ministries. Thanks to Diane Massie and Senior troop 16043 for an active and fun afternoon!
We are working on a history of the Copper Corners Service unit. If you have been involved as a girl or adult and have a story to share, please contact Debra Rieke (email@example.com) at 281-856-0118. Girl Scouting is open to all girls between the ages of 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Copper Corners serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle schools and the corresponding high schools Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. It is not too late to join Girl Scouts now! Please contact Dianne Massie at 281-550-9148 (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information the web site for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website is www.gssjc.org

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think
During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.
FREE HEARTWORM TEST Call for Details.
The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email email@example.com or by phone 281-770-3414.
The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home.

If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising, then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through May. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Offering Carotid Artery Scans (CIMT) in the office
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service. Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling. com, (click Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider in your area.

MOTHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN (MYC)
The moment a newborn baby wraps their tiny hand around a parent’s finger is a pivotal moment in the life of any parent. The baby not only tugs on the finger, but on the parent’s heart as well. It is in that awesome moment that the parent begins to understand the unconditional and abounding love that God has for each of us. But soon after the little miracle arrives so do all the questions and sometimes, without any clear answers. The Mothers of Young Children (MYC) group was organized by St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church to minister to families with young children throughout the Northwest Houston community. Both stay at home and working parents are invited to participate in the group. The group supports and prays for one another, shares information and ideas on child rearing and builds lasting friendships. Most importantly, MYC’s focus is on God and God’s presence in families. The MYC ministry includes: • Friday morning Bible study at 9:30 AM (childcare provided!)
