April 2013 Eagle Ranch West News and Updates
We currently have 2 open positions on the Board of Directors, if you are interested in serving on the Board, please contact one of the Board members for details or come to the next Board meeting for further information. We meet on the 4th Monday of each month at Bear Creek Baptist Church, 5901 Fry Road, Room 103 at 7:00 PM. Please join us and become involved in our community. Please make sure you are replacing the broken or missing boards on your fences, with all the recent heavy winds there are a lot of fences in need of maintenance.
All trash cans and recycle bins need to be stored out of sight, not in front of your garage or beside your homes. Please put these away the evening of collection day. Harris County leash laws state that all pets are to be confined on a leash with no access to sidewalks or streets unless accompanied by owner(s). To report animals running loose, call Animal Control at 281-999-3191.
Things Your Burglar Won’t Tell You
1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters or delivering your new refrigerator. 2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier. 3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste… and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have. 4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it. 5. If it snows while you’re out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway. 6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, where I can see if the alarm is set, that makes it too easy. 7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink and the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom - and your jewelry. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too. 8. It’s raining, you’re fumbling with your umbrella and you forget to lock your door-understandable. But understand this: I don’t take a day off because of bad weather. 9. I always knock first. If you answer, I’ll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don’t take me up on it.) 10. Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table and the medicine cabinet.

11. Helpful hint: I almost never go into kids’ rooms. 12. You’re right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it’s not bolted down, I’ll take it with me. 13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you’re reluctant to leave your TV on while you’re out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.com) 14. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook. 15. The two things I hate: loud dogs and nosy neighbors. 16. I’ll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he’ll stop what he’s doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn’t hear it again, he’ll just go back o what he was doing. It’s human nature. 17. I’m not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house Without setting it? 18. I love looking in your windows. I’m looking for signs that you’re home and for flat screen TVs or gaming Systems I’d like. I’ll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets. 19. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It’s easier that you think to look up your address. 20. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it’s an invitation. 21. If you don’t answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.
Harris County Municipal Utility District No. 105 is contracting to purchase drinking water from two nearby districts while MUD 105 builds new water treatment facilities for its system. Construction of the interconnect facilities with the other districts will be complete within two weeks. When the new water supplies are activated, there may be a temporary discoloration of water coming from the new sources. Also, water pressure may be lower while receiving water through the interconnect facilities. Water from other districts will meet Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) standards in all respects. To ensure adequate water in MUD 105 while new facilities are under construction, MUD 105 will employ Stage 1 Drought Response Measures to reduce water consumption. This means outdoor water use will be limited to Tuesdays and Saturdays for customers with even numbered addresses and Wednesdays and Sundays for customers with odd-numbered addresses. Watering of common areas such as esplanades, parks and sports fields will be limited to Mondays and Fridays. Outdoor water use will be prohibited between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM. If you have questions, please contact Customer Service at Southwest Water Company at 713-405-1750.

material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/ side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. Most important is proper watering • Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.) • Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. • In severe drought, water every 5th day. • Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. • A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots. • Less watering also saves you money!! GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged

April - No Holidays/Early Dismissals
MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINDENDANT
February 15, 2013 Dear Friends: As the 83rd Texas Legislature entered its sixth week of session, I traveled to Austin to attend two important hearings that will impact the future of CFISD students and teachers. I attended both the Senate Education Committee and House Committee on Public Education hearings and walked out of both meetings with an optimistic outlook for positive change in public education. Chaired by local Sen. Dan Patrick, the Senate Education Committee hearing focused on SB 3, a graduation plan bill authored by Sen. Patrick. If passed, this bill will create a new foundation program for high school graduation comprised of 11.5 elective credits and 14.5 specified credits. Additionally, students can earn endorsements in one of four areas (business/industry, arts/humanities, STEM or “distinguished” by completing further requirements). The goal of SB 3 is to better prepare students for post-secondary opportunities in light of the changing economic and business needs. A panel of superintendents did an excellent job reinforcing flexible academic plans for all students. The House Committee on Public Education, chaired by Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock, held its first meeting February 13th. This initial hearing included testimony by Education Commissioner Michael Williams, who provided information on key priorities -maintaining high expectations amid successful results, the importance of the 4x4 graduation plan and closing the achievement gap. The next day, we had the opportunity to hear directly from Sen. Patrick and Rep. Aycock at the Texas School Alliance meeting, where I and other superintendents discussed our hopes for the 83rd session. The tone of this meeting matched the positive feel of both hearings. While we know that the legislative climate can change on a whim, we are optimistic that during this session meaningful change will occur in the areas of high school graduation programs, high-stakes testing and the accountability system. I look forward to more trips to the State Capitol throughout this session to ensure that CFISD’s interests are protected and to communicating our progress back to you. Sincerely,
Learn Day or Night.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through April. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
