and credit cards can no longer be swiped onsite (you can go to the website at www.canyongateatcincoranch.com to make a credit card payment). If a formal plan is set up, please pay the exact amount due on or before the due date as interest is calculated into the plan. NO PLANS WILL BE SET UP AFTER APRIL 1st. Accounts will be sent to the attorney’s office on April 2nd, so if you set up a plan and no payment has been received by April 1st, you will be turned over for collection. Once an account has been sent to the attorney, payment arrangements must be made through them - payments will not be accepted at the office. Reminders are sent out in February and again in March. Please don’t ignore assessment fees - they will not go away. If a homeowner waits until after a letter is received from the attorney, over $100 will be added to the balance - and costs quickly escalate from there.
COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE The Canyon Gate Annual Spring Community Garage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th. The community will be open to the public for homeowner garage sales from 7:00 am - 3:00 pm. (This date will be moved to Sunday if it rains on Saturday.) The sale will be advertised in local papers. If you wish to have a garage sale, please email CG_GarageSale@ yahoo.com or call Lisa Donaldson at 281-579-7227 to register (not the onsite office). If emailing, please give your address and the types of items you plan on selling (i.e. toys, children’s clothing, furniture, kitchen equipment, etc.). Registration gives your sale a listing on the maps distributed to those entering the community for garage sales. Please note that the two community sponsored garage sales are the ONLY garage sales allowed in the community. To be included on the listing, you must be registered by the Wednesday prior to the garage sale (time is needed to have copies/maps made, etc.).

Traffic Law Enforcement A homeowner in another Canyon Gate community has started a petition to allow traffic law enforcement in gated communities. Currently, the police cannot ticket for traffic violations because Canyon Gate is a “private” community. Please add your signature to the petition, so we can try to make our roads safer! See the link below. Anyone can sign the petition, including family members. So please have your entire family sign the petition, so we can reach 2,500 signatures (as required to be presented to the state legislature). www.change.org/petitions/the-legislature-of-the-state-of-texas-adopta-change-to-allow-traffic-code-enforcement-within-gated-subdivisions
DEED RESTRICTIONS Please be sure to pick up after your pet when walking them. The office is getting complaints about residents who allow their dogs to defecate on someone’s lawn or in the common areas and don’t pick up afterwards. We do have bag dispensers in some areas, so please use them. If you do, please carry it with you or place in a trash receptacle! There are many people throwing trash out of cars in the community. We also have a problem with those who park at the rec center and simply dump all their car trash in the Rec parking lot (there ARE trash cans that can be used). Please help to keep our neighborhood clean and refrain from throwing trash out. If you should witness a vehicle whose occupants are throwing garbage out (or doing anything suspicious or reckless), please jot down the license plate number and email the office with the information. Speaking of trash, there seems to be a preponderance of residents either leaving their trash cans out (storing them in front of their garage or on the side of their homes) or putting their trash at the curb early (it should be in containers!). Keeping your cans in full view is against deed restrictions - and with good reason. Leaving cans and trash out really looks bad and brings the entire look of the community down. This sort of thing is catching - it starts with one or two people on a street leaving their cans out or placing trash out early.... then it increases to four or five residents and before you know it, everyone on the block is leaving their trash cans out and leaving garbage at the curb days in advance.

HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement. com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.
REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns. Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation.

It is more than just a question of aesthetics - leaving trash out can cause numerous problems with animals tearing it up, the wind blowing it everywhere (such as last week) and can attract pests such as roaches, rats and vultures. So please keep your trash cans in the garage.

FITNESS CENTER/RECREATION CENTER LOBBY Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed in the fitness center unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The recreation center lobby is not to be used as a gathering place for kids to socialize. The Association is asking for all homeowners who use these facilities to help with watching over these areas. If a child is under the age of 18 and is in the fitness center without a parent or guardian or appears to be simply loitering in the lobby, please politely ask them to leave. Thank you.

EZ TAGS FOR FRONT GATE ACCESS The Homeowners’ Association sells EZ tags that will open the resident gate at the Canyon Gate entrance. Residents may purchase these at the onsite office for $35. These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for, approximately, 3 years. The HOA offers a oneyear warranty on these tags. If the battery goes bad and your EZ tag stops working within the first year, the tag will be replaced at no cost. If your EZ tag stops working after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.
RECREATION CENTER RENTAL The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a two-hour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information. Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly. Fines will start being assessed if the rec center trashcans are filled up with party debris.

STREET LIGHT MAINTENANCE
DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME
To report a streetlight that is not working, call CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222. You will need to report both the number on the base of the pole (six digits) and the street address. You may also report outages online at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage
Benjamin Franklin is credited with the concept of Daylight Saving Time. The basic idea is to make the best use of daylight hours by shifting the clock forward in the Spring and backward in the Fall. Daylight Saving Time has been in use throughout much of the United States, Canada and Europe since World War I. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed an act into law whereby Daylight Saving Time begins on the last Sunday of April and ends on the last Sunday of October each year. However, any State can opt out of Daylight Saving Time by passing a State law.
OUTDOOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS Please remember that when planning to do any outdoor home improvements, you must first apply for approval from the Architectural Control Committee. Forms are available via the website at www.canyongateatcincoranch.com/forms or by contacting the office.
Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time and neither does Arizona (although the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, does). For many years, most of Indiana did not observe Daylight Saving Time with the exception of 10 counties. Beginning in 2006, all of Indiana now observes Daylight Saving Time. However, the state remains divided in two time zones. Seventy-four counties (including state capital Indianapolis) are in the Eastern Time Zone. The 18 remaining counties are in the Central Time Zone.
Animals / Pets CONTROL
In 2005, President Bush signed into law a new energy policy bill that would extend Daylight Saving Time by 4 weeks beginning in 2007: Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 AM on the second Sunday of March; Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 AM on the first Sunday of November. www.nasa.gov
Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space….. remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. Animal control can be reached by calling 281-342-1512 and will pick up strays and/or unconfined pets.

YOUR HEALTH NOW! – DANGERS OF FAST FOOD It’s convenient, cheap and even available within 5 minutes or less: FAST FOOD. What does this quick goodness really do to your body and health? Read on and that burger or bean burrito won’t look or taste so yummy anymore: • Fast Food Affects Energy Levels. Fast food doesn’t contain the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. As a result, you may feel chronically fatigued with a lack of energy. Because fast food and junk food don’t contain adequate protein and good carbohydrates, blood sugar levels drop quickly after eating, leaving you grumpy, fatigued and craving sugar. • Fast Food Causes Obesity & Deathly Illnesses. Fast food has a surplus of fat and as fat accumulates in your body, you gain weight and become obese, putting you at risk for strokes, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and even a heart attack. The high levels of fat and sodium in fast food causes high blood pressure or hypertension. Excessive dietary sodium can also have a negative effect on renal function, even leading to kidney disease. • Fast Food Damages the Liver & Heart. The high levels of fat and sodium in fast food raise blood cholesterol levels and contribute to arterial plaque build-up. The high levels of trans fatty acids in fast foods leads to fatty liver deposits, which cause liver dysfunction and disease.
YOUR HEALTH NOW! - Wellness Tip!
There’s a big secret when it comes to weight loss: decrease sugar and salt. How do you decrease sugar and salt from your diet and what does this do? • Begin by reducing your caffeine in-take, be it coffee, tea or soda. By reducing these items by just one glass, you’re reducing your sugar in-take. • Decrease the number of teaspoons of sugar in your coffee and tea by one teaspoon. And if you MUST have it sweeter, replace with half a teaspoon honey. • Instead of eating an entire snack bag of chips, eat only half and you will reduce sodium big time. • Purchase low sodium foods and snacks. You will never miss the extra salt. Just try, TRY, these few simple things and you are guaranteed to lose at least two pounds in one week of reduction, combined with an increase of exercise and water consumption. I promise!

Healthy St. Patrick’s Day Tasty Bites! St. Patrick’s Day is filled with fun, festivities and FOOD. And you may be thinking: how can this holiday which surrounds us with buttery Irish bites and adult beverages be possibly healthy? OF COURSE it can! Check out this Shamrock and Gold Coin cookie recipe! • 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature • 2/3 cup sugar • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 cups all-purpose flour • Fine green sugar sprinkles • Yellow-goldcoarse sugar Preparation Preheat oven to 325°. Combine butter, sugar, vanilla and salt and beat with electric mixer on medium until blended. Add flour; mix on low until incorporated. Shape dough into a disk and wrap in wax paper. Chill for 2 hours. Soften dough at room temperature. Place oven racks in upper and lower thirds of oven. Halve dough. Roll to 1/4 inch thick and cut out shamrock shapes; save scraps. Repeat. Place cookies on two parchment-paper-lined baking sheets. Bake for 20 minutes (switch oven racks and turn pans halfway through cooking) until lightly golden. Remove; top with sprinkles. Transfer to cooling rack. Mold scraps into 1-inch balls; roll balls in sugar. Arrange 2 inches apart on baking sheet; flatten to 1/4 inch thick with bottom of a glass. Bake for 20 minutes on top rack. Transfer to cooling rack.
to climb under, Easter baskets to weave through and plastic eggs scattered on the ground that the players have to tiptoe around to avoid smashing them. Egg Rolling: Each player needs a different color egg for this game. Place one white egg in the middle of the lawn. Each player takes a turn rolling their egg. The goal is to get the colored egg to come closest to the white egg. Easter Egg Toss: This outdoor Easter game requires players to toss eggs back and forth without dropping them. Any type of egg works. Pairs of players start close together. After successfully tossing and catching the egg, the pairs move back a step each for a greater distance and another toss. Continue widening the gap to make the game more of a challenge. Courtesy of: livestrong.com

LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND RECEIVES SUDLER SILVER SCROLL AWARD National Award given to Community Bands Annually
The Lone Star Symphonic Band is celebrating a milestone season in 2012 - 2013 with five concerts that run to June 2013. The Katybased non-profit community band, featuring many Katy ISD employees under the direction of Fine Arts Director Bob Bryant, has three concerts remaining in this year’s season that will be held on March 3rd, May 5th and June 30th. The Band is also this year’s recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award, North America’s most prestigious award for Community Concert Bands. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation to honor community bands that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities and played a significant role in the cultural and musical environment in their respective communities. The award includes a plaque, certificates for each band member and the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit for Mr. Bob Bryant, the Band’s Music Director. “The Sudler Silver Scroll Award is definitely a major accomplishment and it is exciting that we received the award during our milestone 20th season,” Band President, Beverly Buis said. “The support of so many music enthusiasts, the City of Katy, KCAA and having CrossPoint Community Church as our rehearsal and concert site has encouraged and inspired each band member to prepare more diligently so that we may continue to deliver quality band concerts to the Katy/West Houston area.” The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college.

ST PATRICK’S DAY
Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig is the Gaelic way of expressing a wish that you have all the blessings of St Patrick’s Day and the “luck of the Irish” to go with it. There are many humorous explanations for this expression. One comes from the legend of the “Little People” of the land, known as leprechauns. Finding or catching a leprechaun (who would then give you gold), was a lucky event that could only take place in Ireland. The Irish are descendants of great Celtic and Viking fighters and invaders. Their natural fighting skills often ensured survival and hence they became known as the “lucky” people, a classic case of making your own luck. But then, “The Luck of the Irish” may all be legend. So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that it was the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebra-

mixtures. The Hummingbird feeder needs to be cleaned out at least every three to four days. Also, clean it if it shows any signs of mold or if the syrup is cloudy. Try to refrain from using red food coloring in the water as it is not known if it is harmful to the Hummingbirds, purchase Hummingbird feeders that contain the color red instead.
ATTRACTING HUMMINGBIRDS TO YOUR GARDEN
Another way to try to attract Hummingbirds to your garden is to place some ripened fruit close to the plants and/or feeders. The fruit will attract flies and the Hummingbirds will enjoy this extra protein in your garden. Hummingbirds have good memories and can remember food locations from previous years so try to hang your feeders in the same location each year. www.seasonofspring.com
There are several different ways to attract Hummingbirds into your garden. One way is by planting a Hummingbird garden with the appropriate flowers, trees, shrubs and vines. Your best bet is to attract them with high visibility and nectar plants as Hummingbirds do not have much sense of smell and the flowers that do attract hummingbirds have very little or no fragrance at all. Due to their long and tapered bills, Hummingbirds are able to hover in front of the flowers and sip the nectar with their tongue from the centre of tubular flowers. Hummingbirds eat soft insects and spiders to get their intake of protein. Protein is needed to help build their muscle mass. Therefore, it is best that you do not use pesticides in your garden, as this will kill off the small insects that the Hummingbirds rely on and they could even ingest the pesticides, which can make them sick or even kill the Hummingbird. Hummingbirds provide an essential role as pollinators as they fly from flower to flower for nectar. Hanging a Hummingbird feeder is another way to attract Hummingbirds into your garden. Be patient as it may take some time before a Hummingbird finds your feeder in their hunt for food. Sugar-water feeders must remain clean and the syrup must be fresh or the Hummingbirds will not feed from them. Hummingbirds get their energy from nectar and the sugar-water from feeders. When mixing the sugar and water the rule of thumb is that it should be one part cane sugar to four parts of tap water or simply purchase pre-made liquid
SLUG CONTROL Slug Pellets - Purchase some organic slug pellets and scatter them in the affected areas of your garden and flowerbeds. Only put down a few pellets, as it does not take much to kill a slug or a snail. Beer - Another method to help get rid of slugs and snails is to put some beer in a saucer or a flat plastic lid and place it on the ground amongst your plants. Another way is to pour some beer in a jar and place it in the ground so that the lip of the jar is level with the ground and the slugs and snails will fall in the jar of beer. Copper Band - Try placing a copper band around the tops of you flowerpots or plant containers. The copper band acts as a repellent to slugs and snails. Predators - Frogs, toads, ground beetles, hedgehogs and birds are all predators to slugs and snails. If you have any of the above in your garden encourage them to stay around, as they will help keep the population of slugs and snails down. Hiding Places - Seeing as slugs like cool, dark and moist hiding places, try to trap the slugs by placing some flat pieces of slate, flat

pieces of wood, rectangular building bricks and clay flowerpot trays in and around your flowerbeds/plant beds. The slugs will crawl up under these objects in the evenings and then in the mornings you can turn the object over and they are then exposed to the birds or simply collect and dispose of the slugs yourself. Compost Heap - Try building a composting pile in your yard. Slugs and snails like decomposing materials and therefore will be much better here and not destroying your plants. www.seasonofsrping.com

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.

Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year.

There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested.
We have been keeping Katy Bug Free for the last 30 years! • Bees/Wasps • Ants • Roaches • Ticks • Rodents & Rodent Exclusions • Mosquito Systems • Free Termite Inspection • Real Estate Reports
The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture.
With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email email@example.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

Become a Tutor-Understand our Student’s Lifelines Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.

ATTENTION! Pet Poops / You Scoop Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

HAPPINESS CAN BE CONTAGIOUS, STUDY FINDS People who are happy help make people around them happy, too, according to a long-term study published in the journal BMJ. Researchers who followed nearly 5,000 people for 20 years found that happiness spreads through close social networks like a contagion. One person’s happiness can extend as far as three degrees of separation, the study found - “infecting” the friend of a friend’s friend.

The researchers used data collected from the long-running Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948 and includes multiple generations from the town of Framingham, Mass. The study’s extensive network allowed researchers to gather information about participants’ close relatives, friends and coworkers. People’s happiness was measured on a depression rating scale. The study found that a person’s happiness is determined, in part, by whether those around him or her are happy. The study also found that, although happiness can spread from person to person, it has a limited range. For example, having a happy neighbor living next door increases a person’s likelihood of being happy by 34 percent. A happy neighbor who lives a block away has no effect. Having a happy sibling living within a mile increases a person’s likelihood of happiness by 14 percent. Siblings living further away had no effect. Interestingly, the study found that living with a happy spouse only increases a person’s chance of happiness by 8 percent. The researchers also found that the happiness of co-workers had no effect on individual happiness. -www.christusstcatherine.org
